Last and only time I was in Fleetwood was as a schoolboy in about 1973, (aged 12) We we travelled up from Birmingham to play football against some local school. We got battered but that didn’t matter, we were at the seaside. The two things I remember vividly are, eating Lancashire hot pot for the first time in the school canteen. (I thought it was ok but many of my brummie mates thought this ‘alien’ food was horrible. (sorry if we were rude or ungrateful!) The other thing was we had a tour of the Fleetwood docks. What an eye opener that was for me. Really fascinating and I was blown away by a truly enormous flat fish, no idea the species. Pity the industry has gone. Thanks for the memories Fleetwood.
Went to Knott.End once, everything was closed. However, it was a visit with one of my sadly departed brother in laws. Brings a smile to my face picturing him eating a giant chocolate eclair in Fleetwood. He was a big lad and got some funny looks as he chomped on the cake. Happy days.
That's not a bad fare across the Wyre to Knott End, Stephen. The surprising thing is that you pay in real money too - cash! The boat is a little gem as well. Many thanks for showing us this trip over.
My first visit to Fleetwood was on a school trip from Manchester 50 years ago! I have been back a couple of times over the years and it hasn't changed much ...The ferry trip looks great!
Hi Steve. Another great video of the ferry and brilliant drone footage as well. It looks all very tranquil and relaxing and then you go back home on the tram.
@@AWalkontheWildSideBlackpool I love your videos, each one interesting and a joy to watch. I’ve lived in Blackpool all my life, your videos have made me fall in love with my hometown again. Thank you 😊 x
I would travel over this ferry with my grandmother in the 1960's as I was born (1953) near bye in the village of Pilling. Thank you for bringing back these memories for me. I love your videos.
I have never been across but then again I guess I would need an excuse to want to go to Knott-End. On the rare occasion where I have considered making the trip it was usually out-of-season or a low-tide. Maybe I could take the tram up to Fleetwood from North Shore, make the crossing and then get a bus (2c) back to Blackpool via Preesall, Hambleton, Shard Bridge, Poulton etc. Twenty years ago I worked as a clippy on the old bone-shakers. How many times did I stand on the tram stop on the Esplanade and look across promising myself... We will go one day, course we will... course we will
The drone footage really added to this episode. However the secret sauce was the sound track selection, which really complemented the entire experience.
that was a really good video as usual you know in all my 40 years ive never been on a boat plane or even left the country i may just try this ferry one day just to see what its like thanks stephen keep up the good work
Fantastic video, never knew there was a ferry over to knot end !! Will try and visit there one day !! Thankyou Stephen for the information, keep up the good work !!!
This brings back memories of my Grandma, in the 1960's Grandma used to take either my sister Sue or myself on the tram to Fleetwood and then across the ferry to Knott End for a frothy coffee, milkshake or a bottle of Coca Cola at the very same cafe as Stephen the presenter visits on his video. Grandma would never take to two of us together because Susan didn't know how to behave (she still doesn't). It used to feel like we were going around the world when in fact it was only a 1 mile walk from home to the promenade at Harrowside and then an 11 mile Tram ride to Fleetwood and then 1,000ft across the River Wyre on the ferry to the cafe. I don't remember the water ever being as calm as it was on this video and I'm sure all the seating was open to the weather because it was a smaller ferry and I don't remember it having any type of shelter. Happy times ...
I am not surprised that you've lived in Blackpool all your life Steve, and have never been on the Knott End Ferry until you made this video. Because you can go anytime, you usually don't. I was on it once years ago but since I moved up to Blackpool last August, I keep saying, I must go on the Knott End Ferry and so far I haven't. I love the Fylde Coast and I love a good boat trip. But unfortunately the only boat trip I know of, on the Fylde Coast is the Knott End Ferry. As lovely as it is, it is very short. Great video Steve. Xxx
The sandbar is thought by local historians to be displaced sand from Blackpool north shore. Back in the 1800s, there was a demand for building materials such as pebble rocks, which can be seen cemented into boundary walls, as well as earlier cottage walls and farmhouses / barns. These pebble rocks were obtained by escavating the cliff edges around Blackpool north shore, and subsequently loosened the sand in that area. The tide carried that loose sand up north and it is thought to be the Fleetwood / Knotg End sandbar, as it coincudes with shipping records of when the sandbar first appeared, and when the time period that pebble rocks were used for construction materials.
Hi Stephen thank you for another great video as that was a nice ride on the ferry very different looks like a nice place to have something to eat too at the other end have a great evening xx
My family started the Fleetwood ferry business in the 1840's. Fleetwood council took it from them in the 1890's but they managed to regain control for a while.
Thanks for another great video. Went on this ferry when I visited Blackpool from Australia in 2019. Did not know of it's existence until we took the tram to Fleetwood.
Another fantastic video Stephen. Lovely to see Fleetwood again. Had a pal lived in Knott End and would pop over from time to time to visit, way back in the nineties. Brought it all back. Thank you.
Great film once more! We wanted a go on the ferry last time we were up but the tide was against us and we'd have been in Knott End for about 4 hours.....Love Fleetwood, too. Great place.
Great video Steve with fantastic drone footage at the start. A lovely little boat trip, but it only lasts 5 minutes. The one thing we're missing on the Fylde Coast is a decent boat trip. 100 years ago Fleetwood had ferries going to Cumbria and the Isle of Man. In Blackpool you could have got boat trips to the Isle of Man and Southport. Xxx
Fantastic little video, and awesome drone footage! £2 each way is remarkably cheap, just wonder if they allow mobility scooters on there for a friend with mobility problems? I was on Fleetwood prom on Good Friday, so might venture back soon and jump on board the mini ferry ride. Thanks for sharing 🙏
Great video Steve. In the late 1940s the Fish train from Fleetwood [usually a Namer or a Black Five would go roaring past our school in Thornton at 3pm every day
Late reply mate great video I do miss not beening at Fleetwood but watching your videos specially Fleetwood makes me happy I've never been on that ferry but time i did soon

Very funny ,Stephen great vid. I’m guessing you went to the cash machine on the way, hoping that poor guy on the ferry had change of £20? Next time you go deep sea let’s have some underwater shots aka Jaque Cousteau, lol ,take care mate.
Steve...your presentations are getting better and better.... very professional and polished. Talking of soundtracks, do some of your earlier postings contain tracks from the Japanese musician Ikaigi ?
I have been meaning to take the trip across for a few years but wary the weather might turn and have to find my way back the long way. I might finally take my chances in October.
Nicely filmed vlog especially the drone footage Stephen. I believe Krispy and Jamie’s Vlogs did this trip a few weeks ago as I watched their vlog on it. Sorry had to miss premiere as I was having a late tea.
How was your fish & chips Stephen. We were at Knott End a couple of years back, when we were at Brickhouse Disabled Cottages in Hambleton, which you must visit sometime to cover as it is your neck of the woods. Unfortunately we did not realise that the ferry did not take cars.
For a history of the ferry, read "Ferry Tales" by local author Angela Norris...available from Knott End post office and the gift shop by the ferry cafe .

and he painted matchstick men and matchstick cats and dogs he even painted a couple on a bench who were having a quick snog but he fell down on his can and his aerosol went bang and all they found was his flat cap and his clogs
I could sense those passengers whispering to each other "That's that bloke off the telly"

Well done Steve. We all love a bit of drone footage to give prospective for those of us not having a scooby doo about the area.
One of my favourite places. And Fleetwood certainly has its charms.
That Ferry Cafe at Fleetwood is a great stop and a fantastic chippy. Same owner, who used to have Steve's chippy at Cleveleys

Great video, only spoilt by having to suffer a Liverpool football commentary, perhaps that was the reason for the long faces😂
