Saw the film yesterday with my wife to a relatively full theater and enjoyed it. But my wife and I both had the same issue conveyed; too many subplots, some of which seemed to resolve with no payoff.
I loved this movie. Like a lot of people say it had too much going on, like they damn had two movies worth of plot crammed in there (I would preferred a focus on Beetlejuice’s crazy ex over the kind of bland boyfriend but that’s just me) but what matters most is that it was FUNNY. Honest to god actually fucking hilarious and just as irreverent and cartoonish and out of its mind. It didn’t rely on nostalgia baiting or revisiting old gags to carry itself unlike say Ghostbusters Afterlife did. And best of all everyone was just fun to watch. The vibes were on point even if the story was a mess.
Smith hates Burton because when Tim was brought on as the director of superman he fired Smith. You can't trust anything Kevin says because he has an obvious bone to pick.
I enjoyed Beetlejuice 2 a lot, I was happy that Michael Keaton had more to do. My only issue is like you mentioned the subplots. There are two in particular that I felt could’ve been removed. 1. Jenna Ortega’s boyfriend. 2. Winona Ryder’s husband trying to marry her. Had these two subplots been removed/rewritten it would’ve been a tighter film overall. I liked the idea of Monica Belluci being Beetlejuce’s ex wife, but they didn’t do enough with her in the film. Other than that though, it was a fun sequel.
Here's two more subplots that didn't bring much to the table - 3. Willem Dafoe and his team of cops. 4. The guys with little heads all escaping and then not doing much at all.
Cool. You've changed my mind. I was REALLY not looking forward to this, thinking it was gonna be another passing the torch to the next generation reboot, but your review reassured me.
Just came back from seeing this in the cinema. I liked it, not blown away by it, but the little musical bits made me laugh, especially MacArthur Park, I was laughing my ass off cause I listen to that song often cause Simpsons loves to rip on it. "Oh man, that just kept going ah?" I think Catherine Ohara was the MVP in this after Michael Keaton to be honest. But in the end, it felt like what I like to call a "And then" movie. As in "This happens, and then that happens and then and then..." But still nice to see Keaton seems like he has not missed a beat since the movie came out nearly 40 years ago.
My biggest complaint with the movie was, there was just too much going on. They set up the exwife like shes going to be the main antagonist, but she literally doesnt do anything. You take her out, and almost nothing changes. She doesnt even interact Beetlejuice or Lydia until the final scene, and shes immediately killed off. Killing off the step mom didnt really serve much purpose either, she was also just an annoying character. Then you have Willem Defoe's character thay was kind of funny, but again, served little purpose. And then you have the daughter and boyfriend plot, which moves the story forward but was again barely needed.
I agree. But i think the plot with astrids boyfriend was rhe plot they should’ve use more. Make him more manipulative and evil aand then winona asks for beetlejuice for help. Just like the movie but maybe the resolve of this plot can be more difficult and beetlejuice must use all of his cunning to beat the boy, with a little help from winona. And in the end they become ‘friends’ just like in the animation series 😊
I want to criticize this movie not having a story, but the first one doesn’t really either. Although that one is paced better and is funnier. This one was funny and creative enough that I was entertained the entire runtime.
Havnt seen it yet. Although, some might disagree but I know when I watch your reviews there isn't any major spoilers. You're underrated my friend. I value your opinion over most.
if they would have chosen either Bellucci or Defoe's character and condensed the two role into one villain character, a lot of issues would have been fixed and the film would be stronger for it.
My three cousins, my aunt and uncle, my dad, my dead mom, didn't go see it together. But I did go to Barnes & Noble and have a Starbucks latte and looked through a magazine.
I know it's a long shot, but I'm hoping there's a third that gives his wife more to do. That would justify her inclusion in this one so they could kick right off with her in the third. And yes, she can definitely come back from her ending in this one.
Saw this on Friday and while I didn't hate it, I really wanted it to be a better film. I think on the whole it was a bit mediocre. It does have the spooky season vibes, some great design, effects and the cast put in good, game performances. I loved Willem Defoe's character (he really gives it his all), but he had so little of consequence to do; ditto Monica Bellucci. For a film opening at the start of the Autumn season, the upstate New England small town in the Fall setting, is as cosy as a blanket made out of pumpkins and apple pie. But the story is meandering and stuffs in far too many plot threads than it can cope with, leading to none of them carrying any real heft. The plot about Astrid's boyfriend should probably have formed the central thread; it had stakes and emotional weight. The script also had a weird fixation with roasting new age adjacent therapy culture, as if this was what all the cool kids are into. I think we should be thankful that it doesn't stray into 'woke' culture territory, but even that would be pretty stale in 2024. Its gag about 'influencers' was a bit on the nose too and is already a theme that feels dated. I felt that much of the humour fell somewhat flat or only raised an amused smile, rather than belly laughs. There were also some strange choices on display, like an overegged bit about Soul Train (yes the 70's TV show), again its 2024, who out of an audience of mostly millennials and younger is going to get that reference for the full effect? I don't know why they didn't just write out Jones' character, like they dealt with the Maitlands, rather than spending so much time pointlessly returning to him; truly baffling. If they had tightened up the story, jettisoned bloat like The Soul Train and Charles Deetz's repeated appearances, they could have had a corker on their hands. Like I said, I didn't hate it despite its many flaws. It does have a lot of charm and has been pitched at precisely the right time of year. If you want a movie to kick off the Autumn, then this is probably it.
It just didn't grab me like the original did (and still does). Beetlejuice has withstood the test of time for 36 years and I have no doubt it will continue to be a classic film that people will keep going back to. But this movie? In my opinion they tried to capture that lightning in a bottle again and it just missed the mark. It has it's moments but this isn't going to be a timeless classic like the original. It'll be the sequel most people will forget even existed.
Have to agree, definitely felt like a labour of love rather than a cynical cash grab. I enjoyed it very much, Catherine O'Hara was just great. I’m so mixed on watching this film because on one hand I love the original Beetlejuice (1988) but on the other hand I’m not really a big fan of legacy sequels due to their reliance on nostalgia and a overall lack of creative risk-taking (though Top Gun: Maverick is definitely an exception).
I thought this movie was great and I really enjoyed it. I will be seeing it again while still in theaters. Also is your closing theme from The Adventures of Superboy or something else.
Try not to spoil anything, but I want to see Tim Burton make a movie of Defoe’s character before he died and also just a funny movie where the shrunken heads just run around the living world that was my favorite part
The movie was awesome. Not perfect but a really good sequel. The plot does have a lot going on all at once but they are all very simple concepts. I’ve always seen Beetlejuice as sort of a dark Looney Toons esc character and they nail that energy with this movie. The horror elements and gross out moments were turned up to 11 with this one too which was really funny.

Sort of disappointing plot conclusion, i thought they were going to have BJ end up marrying Belucci and begging for help. Lydia forming an uneasy alliance to sort out Jeremy and Belluci. Would have been interesting. BJs best laughs come when hes portraying a sub character, I did not get the spanish speaking stuff at all. Jarring. It was a good time overall and worth seeing
Yes, this movie is flawed, but I laughed and had a lot of fun regardless. I will take a flawed film that genuinely entertains me over a technically perfect, but mediocre one any day.
The musical numbers were way too long, and the plot was kind of all over the place, however I still really enjoyed the movie and hope they make a 3rd. Deelia was great.

I recently watched wishmaster and wishmaster 2 from the 90s...it was fun ,good acted , funny and scary and had tension...what happened to Hollywood..even that beetlejuice 2 was mediocre
Just seen it and although entertaining in parts thought it was abit of a mess...certainly worth a watch but probably not a movie I would be in a rush to watch again unlike the original .
Nope. I thought that as well, but I picked it up when I was watching a reactor who was watching the film. I saw this in the theaters in ‘87 & have seen it probably 50 times since then & never picked up on it till now, lol.
This is exactly my thoughts on the movie. The original is one of my favourite films and I was expecting the sequel to be mediocre at best but I was pleasantly surprised. I really enjoyed the film, I totally agree with the flaws you mentioned but they in no way ruin the film, Keaton isn't as energetic as he was but he certainly pulled off returning as the ghost with the most.
As for the music fitting in really well? Yeah, until that final wedding song. Boring and went on forever. Overall I enjoyed but echoing yourself and many others here in the comments, far too many subplots crammed in that fizzled out into nothing. Although I'm on board to see Beetlejuice goes Hawaiian😂
Hopefully this resurrects Tim’s career. Lately people have been rightfully and wrongfully criticizing him for his decades of casting. Now not only can he change, but evolve far from disneys control.
Just out of this. Not funny in the slightest and as far as plot goes a bit of an after thought. Felt to me that Keaton was in this far less than the original and with far less impact. 2/5 at best.
The entire plot of the original is that delia is so annoying they hire beetlejuice to kick her out. And its just her, the maitlands like her daughter lydia and charles is bland and inoffensive. Yet in this film, somehow delia is supposed to be likable and a major character we agree with. Nauseating. Are we going to do another lord of the rings where Gollum is the hero now? Pairing her with astrid who is so unlikable when she finds out her grandfather died, she has no reaction or sadness whatsoever. I've heard at least three critics talk about how "everyone is having fun" and so bad writing doesnt matter. Pretty strange, it almost feels like a talking point handed down by the studio to try and deflect criticism. Do actors normally hate making movies? How do we know they were having fun off camera? And most importantly does it matter? If a chef had a great time making your meal of dogfood does it turn it into a five star steak on your plate?
Didn't gel with it at all. The original was fantastic but this just felt soulless and pointless. Forced humour with song set pieces that went on waaaay too long.
I am absolutely certain that Beetlejuice's wife was just a tee up in this movie. I am positive there is going to be a third one called Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and that is where we will see her take the main stage. It just makes sense considering his name needs to be said three times and this movie said it twice with its title.
Eugene Levy could be in a third part as a ghost lawyer while Jeff Goldblum could be a paranormal investigator who along with his psychic partner portrayed by Johnny Depp try to get rid of Beetlejuice.
Oliver, you are too soft on the movie. Too many characters and subplots. And because Bellucci is the new lover of Tim Burton she is in the movie. And Defoe was a waste. A missed opportunity. They should have focused on the plot with the dead guy and Jenna Ortega.
I think the movie pulled off the "more is more" approach... the first was more of a less is more... both can be good, some movies benefit of being over stuffed, like evil dead 2 or dead alive... (speaking of which, baby Beetlejuice reminded me of that zombie baby from dead alive)
'they could easily have shifted attention to Jenna Ortega due to her popularity from Wednesday' the writers claim that they didn't write Astrid with her specifically in mind

Ironic Smith critiques sequels to Beetlejuice yet he made unnecessary sequels to Clerks.

Nope. I thought that as well, but I picked it up when I was watching a reactor who was watching the film. I saw this in the theaters in ‘87 & have seen it probably 50 times since then & never picked up on it till now, lol.
@goldenageofdinosaurs7192
Well I know you are a liar as the first movie was released in 1988 not 1987.
Liar.
Stepmother. That’s why she didn’t like her. Don’t you remember the father was normal and the stepmother was into the weird art.
If its anything like the Wednesday show ill pass
This is exactly my thoughts on the movie. The original is one of my favourite films and I was expecting the sequel to be mediocre at best but I was pleasantly surprised.
I really enjoyed the film, I totally agree with the flaws you mentioned but they in no way ruin the film, Keaton isn't as energetic as he was but he certainly pulled off returning
as the ghost with the most.
Why the heck was this a September release? Should have been released to theaters in October.
Yeah, not just in concept but the movie takes place in Oct and even features Halloween. =S
Won’t want to compete against Joker.
WORTH THE 36 YEAR WAIT 😃
As for the music fitting in really well? Yeah, until that final wedding song. Boring and went on forever.
Overall I enjoyed but echoing yourself and many others here in the comments, far too many subplots crammed in that fizzled out into nothing. Although I'm on board to see Beetlejuice goes Hawaiian😂
Hopefully this resurrects Tim’s career.
Lately people have been rightfully and wrongfully criticizing him for his decades of casting. Now not only can he change, but evolve far from disneys control.
$100,000,000 ??
You sounded like you were getting out of breath explaining everything that goes on in this film.
Not a bad movie, but I was pretty bored throughout. It was akin to Ghostbusters 2, not bad, but not necessary.
Who cares if it’s necessary as long as it’s good?
@@gamestation2690 Yeah sure when you are easily pleased
@@gamestation2690 It wasn’t really, it was mid. If you grew up with the original like I did this was just 🤷🏻♂️
@@sebastiannock942 I didn't grow up with the original, actually.
Beetlejuice looks more like Doink the Clown in this one.
I had to look that up. You really are right. 😂
7:54 you could not do that scene today
Just out of this. Not funny in the slightest and as far as plot goes a bit of an after thought. Felt to me that Keaton was in this far less than the original and with far less impact. 2/5 at best.
Keaton seemed aged and subdued compared to his over-the-top performance in the original film. Also too many subplots and underdeveloped characters.
Turned it off after 1 hr.was so bored
Looks like the new one was filmed on an I phone. No thanks
Blablabla... Not funny. Awful. Do not waste your time.
Movie was terrible.
Maybe you’re just too hard on the movie
@SuperBrooklynite007 No even they (don't know their pronouns) were too easy with the negative comments.
Yeah it was too busy but it didn't stop it being a fun time
i dont think the point of the movie was the plot (much like the original one)
I think the movie pulled off the "more is more" approach... the first was more of a less is more... both can be good, some movies benefit of being over stuffed, like evil dead 2 or dead alive... (speaking of which, baby Beetlejuice reminded me of that zombie baby from dead alive)
They missed a trick by not calling this film 'James Cameron's Beetlejuices.'
Beetlejuice$
'Long awaited'. Did any of us actually ask for this or want it? Hollywood is dying before our eyes!
Well I thought it was great
I mean, it's raking in a small fortune so asked for or not people are flocking to go see it.
I've wanted a sequel since I saw it as a kid in like 1990, so..... 🤷♂️
Thank god this didn't go half-assed woke route
'they could easily have shifted attention to Jenna Ortega due to her popularity from Wednesday' the writers claim that they didn't write Astrid with her specifically in mind
Please let me know if this film features flatulence. I have a zero flatulence policy.
What do you do when you eat Mexican food?
