This is so spooky. I've been posting loads of comments on this film on other channels recently.
Imagine Tom Cruise had gotten the part!!! He was the original choice.
I had a dream about The Usual Suspects last night. This film paraphrases the greatest lie quote from it. Both films star Gabriel Byrne and Kevin Pollak. It is Kevin Pollak's birthday today. Before this notification appeared on my phone. I was thinking about this film.
Yeah really awesome job of joining the collective manifestation on Doomsday/Judgement Day/Armageddon bs.
Like this dumb movie is REALLY worth the "Retrospective".
The more you keep these halfwit slaves drooling over this mindless content, the happier your Masters are right OLLIE?
666 is the Emperor Nero's full numerical name in Latin
To me this is Arnie's best acting. Absolute tour de force in context, he became Jericho Cane, forgot it was Arnie.
No way. Best action hero and T2 in my opinion, were his arguably best performances
It was a solid performance as he wasn't just a one liner machine and attempted to be a bit more dramatic. Man's range is limited but in this and Total Recall mf was trying and I appreciate it.
I think Twins is his best acting. EoD is good too
His performance in the first Terminator is his least 'Arnie-like'. Menacing and inhuman.
Arnold I think channeled the struggles in his personal life nicely here with his health complications, his dwindling action career and probably hiding his love child.
This by far one of the most underrated Arnold flicks ever. I love End of Days it's a great dark action flick and you see Arnold in a way you've never seen him before.
I still remember laughing out loud in the theater when the priest character flipped 666 to 999.
Factual……..
Agreed. The 6th Day is also pretty good but under rated.
Its the only non-Terminator movie where he dies. I became emotional when I saw it at the movies because it made me realise that time passes and no one lives forever. Arnold was my hero when I was a kid, and seing him not be this invincible superhuman made me sad.
Gabriel Byrne did a good job but they wrote the devil so piss poorly
As far as I’m concerned, this movie contains the best movie quote of Arnold’s career. That being one shouted directly at Satan himself: “you’re a f***ing CHOIR BOY compared to me, …. that’s right, a choir boy! Lol
Or “ should’ve just killed the bastard, less paperwork “
Arnold vs the Devil. I kind of miss the days when an entire movie premise was simply matching up someone against a popular actor just for shits and giggles.
Chuck Norris beat-up that Copyrights guy
In my country, Arnold movies are often titled as "Demonic ____" to emphasize his badass status, like Demonic Terminator, Demonic Commander (Commando) and Demonic Destroyer (Eraser). So when End of Eays came out everybody was like "Yeah, of course it has come to this."
There are no modern equivalents, hence such films are a product of a bygone age, sadly.
@@inlpwetrustBy Reselling "Demonic",
They've Normalized "Fear".
Freddy, Michael, Jason...horror film victims will mention those names like they would an angry neighbor or abusive ex.
Instead of the Zombie DEMON EX..ecutioners we're so familiar with.
@@Grandmastergav86 The Rock does come close. Black Adam was kind of pitched as The Rock vs Superman.
Easily one of Arnold's most underrated films. It was scary, emotional and heartbreaking. I wish he did more films like this.
Ghostbusters 2 and Constantine are really similar to it.
i liked this movie alot just people hated it because it was not your typical arnold flick
@@torquetheprisoner Just because it's different doesn't mean it's bad. People should get that.
@@shadowleon659 exactly
@@shadowleon659 unfortunately some people can’t just switch off their brain and enjoy a good Arnie action flick
One of the reasons this film works so well is because it's so dark
This is Arnold's most underrated movie, a 90s Gothic Thriller favourite of mine.
Arnie asking Satan “you want to fuck with me?” Had me in fits. Had a great soundtrack too.
My favourite song from the soundtrack is "So Long" by Everlast.
"you're a choir boy compared to me. A CHOIR BOY!!!"

don't fly, go ahead and do so, but that won't change the facts about emus. Everyone should own a rubber chicken for a surreal experience
motivated by ideological agendas and not anything remotely connected to the pursuit of vector spaces of wave functions. The mass of the

It's funny that Gabriel Byrne play the devil and a priest in two different movies within a few months from each other in 1999. And he reunited with Usual Suspects co-star Kevin Pollock.
He also played a priest in a very short lived comedy show on abc but it got cancelled after like 5 episodes.
And wearing similar clothes
Not even the Devil Himself can prevent Oliver Harper from releasing an awesome retrospective video.
Yes, he is one of the best reviewers on UA-cam. In my opinion of film, especially past ones, There are info about films, especially this one I had absolutely no clue about. It's always interesting to see how movies like this get made
To me, this is the truly last great Arnold film. Always loved seeing him in this more darker tone & character. Love that fact that this is essentially a horror action thriller.
I think Arnold made this as a replacement for the Ridley Scott version of I am Legend falling apart. He was really excited for that project.
I love Oliver's retrospectives and reviews. One of the best on UA-cam for damn sure.
definitely
Yeah, Especially his funniest Arnold impression, as well as Arnold's appearance in WWE, that was cool.
I agree...I put them on while u am doing things around the house....His voice is so good for listening to...
@@samanthareninger4667 I put it on at night to fall asleep. Lol.
This was my introduction to Byrne and made me an instant fan. This is definitely one of my favorite Arnold performances. I think this is one of the films that encouraged me to appreciate films that have performances from talent that is different than what I have seen from them in the past.
I never got the criticism for this film, I always loved it. Pretty bleak, and I think this is one of the few films Arnold puts in a really solid and different performance outside of the action man persona he’s known for
The Guns N Roses song Oh My God for the film was the first song they released in five years and with a completely new lineup. The last song they released prior to this was Sympathy For The Devil which was for Interview With A Vampire
That version of OMG is essentially a demo. Axl was messing with it literally while the courier was waiting to take the disc to the printing plant. I'm a bit of a Chinese Democracy nerd. There is a different version floating around and it's much better. All the vocals on CD were done basically in 00/01 and the version done around then, imo, is much better.
"You think you're bad!? You're a fucking choir boy compared to ME!" Hell yeah, Arnold
Remember seeing this in he cinema when it first came out at a late showing. I agree it's not perfect and abit derivative but it's very entertaining and I view it as quite underrated. As Oliver mentions in his retrospective; the scene with Arnie being 'tempted' is the highlight for me and I enjoyed the climax scene in the Church. Well worth a watch.
Too right!
21:30 only reason why Y2K bug wasn't really an issue, was thanks to the work of software engineers fixing their shit in time.
It wasn't a apocalyptic event which we had to endure, it was a serious problem for transactional systems relying on correct dates and times. So people fixed it before it before it became a problem.
I was going to reply the same. My old neighbor was a computer programmer at the time and involved in all the recoding. He said people don't realize how close everything was to being a disaster. Since nothing happened, it became a joke, but little did they know...
got to see this movie at the theater and eventually owned it on dvd. Its definitely a guilty pleasure.
I remember in an interview Arnold said I am working on a new film, It is called 'Doom'. We all thought is was going to be a film based on the Game but he was talking about this movie.
I read a theory somewhere that Satan's ultimate goal wasn't Christine but to successfully tempt Jericho who reminds him a great deal of Jobe.
Satan's inability to tempt Jobe in the past makes his goal of corrupting Jericho a greater personal victory serving his fierce narcissism.
I always liked End of Days. Definitely one of the most underappreciated Arnie flicks. I remember seeing it in my local theater when I was 10 and got fully invested in it.
He's so good at imitating Arnold's laugh 😂
I had just started college when this movie came out and always remember my bus used to pass a huge billboard advertising this movie on it. Still didn't catch until owning it on VHS (which I still have). I'm among that crowed echoing it's probably Arnies last good film. I thought it was a cut away from his usual stuff and facing off against the devil, an opponent that didn't look ridiculous against Arnies hulking size like usual. I've always been fond of this movie.
For the long awaited troubled production of "End of Days," veteran cinematographer/filmmaker Peter Hyams took over the project from several helmers
such as Marcus Nispel for Universal-International and Beacon Communications in 1999. The film has some mixed reviews, according to
Mrs. Edward Muhl at MCA/Universal.
I really love the fact, Ollie, that you mentioned the WWE scenario in which he appeared in. Props to you.
James Cameron recomended Peter Hyams to direct, and Hyams ended up critisizing Cameron's lightning skills lol
Hyams sounded like a prick about the lighting. Perhaps he should have taken some cues from Cameron.
Lovely to see this film to be reviewed. It’s such a guilty pleasure of mine. Love it in fact and seen it in cinemas when it came out. Yes, its stupid sometimes, and the cgi is cheesy as they get, but Stan Winston worked on the creature design and of course it includes Arnold. It’s a mark of an era in my life.
"Cheese is cheesy because it's cheesed with cheesiness."

The 2 second Arnold impressions!! So accurate…
Oliver Harper videos are comfy af. Love eating dinner to them.
Imagine James Cameron directed this.
Would have been different and successful.
If Cameron had made it the female character would have developed into a badass like all his other female characters by the end. The movie would have focused more on the dramatic elements of why people would be tempted by Satan himself and why they would join him as opposed to being against him and the soundtrack would have been a bunch of rock and rap songs over and over. Cameron's movie would have been more about the drama with the action coming from the drama of the story itself and the female lead would have gotten more development into her life drama-wise. What we ended up with was a silly but entertaining Arnold vs Satan movie in the standard action format and formula.
The special makeup effects were done by Oscar Winning VFX company Stan Winston Studios as well KNB FX group.
Best looking Devil ever!!!!
Love your channel not because your the most entertaining or your personality but you brake movies down like no one does give a great unbiased opinion which is rare my favorite movie review channel hands down!
Great video Oliver, that Arnie impression 🤣🤣🤣
When I saw the trailer, and looked at the film poster, I thought it was going to be an action disaster film where Schwarzenegger tries to stop terrorists from activating a nuclear bomb that would destroy New York with an Earthquake generated by the explosion
The Relic was apparently darkened for the DVD release for some (...I may have learn that from this channel) but they fixed it for some of the Blurays.
12:12 Peter Hyams is a very underrated cinematographer, his low-key style of lighting is exactly the same style DPs like Roger Deakins are using nowadays - but Hyams was doing it in the 80s and 90s, on film and with no digital color-grading. While "The Relic" was a bit too extreme (I reckon the anamorphic lenses didn't help), "End of Days" (shot on Super35, much easier to handle in low-light scenarios) is probably one of his finest outings as a DP and some of the shots in the movie are majestic. I reckon Arnie didn't like it because he is used to be perfectly lit in every shot, while Hyams very often went for silhouettes. I think the visual style is one the things that stand out the most in this flick, along with the score. The script was messy unfortunately - even idiotic at times: calling the sniper priest Thomas Aquinas like the medieval scholastic philosopher is the kind of stuff only Hollywood people would deem smart. Also, while I am a big Schwarzenegger fan and I appreciate his attempt at widening his roles, I think the story was way out of his range: playing a tormented, suicidal ex-cop is something that calls for more than just charisma.
I laugh in the face of those calling this movie "badly lit". They're absolute idiots.
@@constantinezh7156 The lighting sucks. Arnold was right. 💯 😜
Arnold is always Arnold in every movie he stars in except for like 2 films. In Maggie and Aftermath he gives good dramatic low low-key performances the fun with this movie if you are going to have fun with it is the absurd idea of Arnold vs Satan. The movie's script is silly but its entertaining if you like Arnold films and can just meet this film on the level its at which is Arnold vs Satan.
@@sid6856 I am cinematographer and I do this for a living.
A personal favourite of mine and personally I think the lighting is fine
I'm tempted to watch it, especially now that I know Miriam Margolyes is in it. She's 5'1" - those fight scenes with Arnold would have been a nightmare to shoot!
Not Arnold's finest hour but an entertaining movie with great atmosphere nonetheless. Awesome soundtrack too.
Still love how he fights against 10000 bums..
What a legend.
As always, another great retrospective. What makes it even better is the same as your Commando episode. Hearing about Arnie farting in someone's face, accompanied with the impression (just like the ice cream scene) was the cherry on top. I spit out my beer.
Looking forward to more retrospectives in the future, but I'm crossing my fingers you'll dig up some older Schwarzenegger videos you haven't covered, and maybe with a bit of the impersonation dash added to the pot.
Keep up the great work, Oliver.
Can you do the movie Stigmata Starring Patricia Arquette
Came out the same year as End of Days also stars Gabriel Byrne.
Of course the real End of Days was when Maria found out about the housekeeper.
I enjoyed this movie so much. Saw it in high school when it came out. Was so much fun.
25:05 It’s crazy to me that the Peter Stormare version of the devil is technically the same character as the Tom Ellis one (Lucifer Morningstar).
This is a fantastic film. Always been a fan of Peter hyams. This movie is really good.
8:00 the demands of the original director are hilarious, especially when you consider he was unknown.
The thing which always stood out to me about this film was how DARK the picture appeared.
Wow a Sam Raimi version would be great. Also, I want to see Arnold's I am legend.
"End Of Days" is a action movie, but the studios sale like a horror movie on trailers.
At the time, I thought it was more a supernatural thriller.
Oliver I know you aren't the biggest fan of The 6th Day but it would be awesome to see a Retrospective/Review of The 6th Day from you. Personally I've always really enjoyed it and think it deserves another chance based on the concept alone. The 6th Day in 2001 was also one of the last Laserdiscs ever pressed.
Sixth day is great reminds me of total recall
Collateral is good
Late peak Arnold
Lol you should be doing these impressions more often. Excellent video 👌
December 1999, I cannot believe this movie is 23 years old.
I have to be honest the only reason i haven't seen it yet was because of all the negative reviews at the time it came out. But you're the first i've seen it give it any kind of praise, i'll add it to my watch list
Love your retrospectives. You have relaxing voice and great editing
The stakes keep rising.
That's one way to describe Arnold's action films. The resume of villains is historic.
I saw this in theaters on New Year's Eve. I was the only customer in the entire theater. When I went into the film it was the 90s; when I exited it was the new millennium.
i remember when this movie came out, arnold made an appearance on smackdown and beat up triple h
I have always had a soft spot for this one.
Great review Oliver 👍
Why did I think Gabriel Byrne was Al Pacino? Even after watching the film countless times I never seemed to notice until I searched the cast on Google🤦 but now I'm piecing the puzzle I also got The Devil's Advocate confused with this film but I do think Al Pacino would of played the role extremely well
Well Al has played the part of Satan in the Devils Advocate…..so I can see how one might get mixed up.
It's good to see this film get more praise because for the most part I've always really liked it. Arnold was 53 years old and was past his prime by the late 90's (his prime being 1984 to 1994), but this is still the best of his late 90's and early 2000's output, and I even prefer it to Eraser (1996).
30plus min retrospect reviews my favs..Loved end days too especially Gabriel 🍀
Grow up on Arnie films, when ever I see this, I see it as the end of an era. If he hadn’t gone into politics he may of had another good film or 2. Shame he never found his footing again since coming back like Stallone.
Loved this film and it's take on demonology, love anything with God vs Satan. Gabrielle Byren was excellent as Lucifer.
I have GOT to see this. Missed it when it came out (I was 15) and the sheer number of great character actors has me intrigued.
End of Days would look spectacular on UHD Blu-ray.
The Carlsbad one punch was my favorite part. Second only to Gabriel laying pipe to everything in his path on his way to Christine that was the only thing slowing him down was all the trim he was slaying.
I seen this in the cinema when it came out and seeing him grab that chicks tit and then the restaurant blows up.. Was like yeah... This gonna be good. I don't live too far from where Gabriel grew up so great to see him appearing in all these great films. And Jay I have to ask if I can borrow that exquisite phrase 'trim he was slaying'? Epic!
@@mccarthy5825 yes by all means be my guest.
@@JayStone1 thank you Jay 👍 you legend, May you slay trim like Arnie slays baddies in Commando
I got my copy of In Search of Darkness 3 - i can't wait to soak up them 5hrs of 80's horror glory!!! I always enjoyed End of Days - a great Omen-styled film and anyone who doesn't like Omen is a twit!
This really made me want to go back and watch this film again and that's something I never thought I'd say again. Was never a huge fan but most give it another chance
"You're a fucking choir boy compared to me"
🤣
i remember liking the film well enough, particularly Arnold's performance. Hearing his comments makes me wonder if he considered trying his hand at directing; he seems to potentially have a good head for it.
Always wanted you to do this one!
Weird. I was thinking about this film before this flagged up on my phone.
I love in the movie where they find the priest crucified on the ceiling and the theory is he did it to himself and the big brained argument against that theory is "how did he get the last scalpel in?" As if getting the others in was possible.
I enjoyed this movie very much!
It was a box office success making $220 million dollars against a $100 million dollar budget. I know Critics hated this film, but it's one of Schwarzenegger's most underrated movies.
In my opinion this film is underrated, I feel that Arnie was wrong about Peter Hyams lighting. The lighting has to be dark to give it a sinister look. Peter Hyams is a great filmmakers with films like Capricorn one, Outland Running Scared, Timecop etc.
Ok out all your videos I've seen and love . your impression of Arnold laughing was really fucking hilarious dude . I enjoy your content so much sometimes I just let it play in the background
Fun Fact: The director of this movie, directed the comedy-supernatural movie, Stay Tuned with the late great John Ritter. It was also a movie about humanity's struggle against The Devil.
A guilty pleasure. It has some great elements.
I need to watch this again. I really don't remember anything about this movie. I remember seeing it once in the early 2000s. Once again a top quality retrospective. Thank you, Oliver.
I remember the promotional WWF tie-in for this movie with Arnold appearing on an episode of Smackdown in addition to Gabriel Byrne appearing in-character in a small 15 to 20 second promo for WWF's Sunday Night Heat show or their weekend morning spotlight program (can't remember the name).

The mother/daughter 3 some....where they melt into 1 person. I've never forgotten that. Horror gold.
Underrated Arnie flick. Yeah this was pushing into his stinker era, but it has cool action and some decent spookiness.
Yeah,stinker era-6th Day,Collateral Damage,T3.

Knocked it out of the park again Oliver. Great review
Arnold kicking HHH's ass will always be awesome haha.
Thank you Oliver, for your awesome videos! I am your biggest fan of your work, it's timeless, what are you doing.
🇱🇹✌️🇺🇦
Peter Hyams might be the most underrated director ever.
That starting trailer/montage made this look like another indestructible Arnold adventure. However I thought it actually played more like a 'actual movie'. One of my favourite of his flicks.
Awesome as usual! I've only seen bits of this movie on TV and in an old "Nostalgia Critic", so I don't really have an honest opinion. I will say, the idea of Arnold Schwarzenegger fighting The Devil sounds F----ING AWESOME!!!
Happy Halloween Oliver! 🎃
Ι saw it recently, whenever I watched it as a kid I couldnt sleep. Now I am mature enough to have a more overall experience...
Unfortunately, idd the movie is not very good, especially the CGI hasnt aged well at all. Also the acting and some scenes didnt feel coherent and made much sence. Its deffinitely a worthwhile movie especially if u are an Arnold fan and some horror elements were cool. Do be firm I would give it a 6/10 for its time...
