It´s all about respect. You are right! But a warrior lives in ones heart. Martial arts is just a way to give some kind of structure into a possible fight. An old woman can be more warrior than a 120 kg young man :)

Boxing is true warrior sport, not this flamboyant bs, you know which people participate in this stuff? those who are afraid of real fight, but still want physical competition.

It's not a sport and I say that because I respect karate. Sport karate fails to uphold the purpose of karate for being a philosophy, art, and self-defense training. There is no point in this "sport" existing. These are not kumites and do not fall in line with the principles on which karate was created. As you said, it's a life style. It is not a sport. Martial arts are inherently not sports, definitionally.

Yet if it becomes a full Olympic Sport I am sure the competing karateka will abide by the "rules" and do their best. My concern is who will be qualified to judge kata or kumite ? It’s weird how many people are mad that the Olympics chose to bring in Karatedo instead of Karatejutsu and apparently it isn’t real karate. Shotokan is just as much about the philosophy and discipline that comes from mastering kata as it is from strengthening your senses and body from combat. It’s point sparring because it’s just as much about learning as it is about fighting, learning how to read a person in short bursts is the key to victory in any fight and in point, you might not always get hit in a deadly spot, but it lets you learn where you’re open so that when you’re in a fight you know your own weaknesses. People who complain about point sparring not being real karate is because they have no appreciation for martial arts, they have no appreciation for the mental battle present in each fight and the real ness of a single hit being able to kill you. These people just want to wail on each other, they want to do damage and assert physical dominance. Karate is about overcoming another’s will with your own using your mind and body. It takes only one fatal blow to kill someone, and so it takes only one opening to end a fight. Never forget that.

A complex system of how to work with balance, angles, stances and so many more....It is NOT "when he does this, you do that" ! This is Shotokan Karate. A watered down version of Okinawan Karate for the sole purpose of pleasing the mainland Japanese, who is said Okinawan Karate was too dangerous. When the Sensei of Funakoshi (the guy who watered it down) found out it had to be watered down, his sensei and the other masters weren't having it and backed out from pleasing the mainland.
I tried this style out for a couple of classes I was taught Kata(which is pretty necessary in most if not all karate) but not its bunkai (practicality) which bummed me out of the style. I mean If I’m going to learn a style at least teach me its real life application. The place I train was more focused competition Kumite and Kata than Self Defense or actual fighting. The conditioning was alright. Just your normal sports stretches, but nothing compared to Okinawan Karate conditioning. Where you end up injuring certain body parts, just for it to heal so you can have increased durability. You might end up having the ugliest hands in your neighbourhood, but at least your hands are tougher than literal wood or bricks, granted if you did your training well.

    • @alrumuller9300

Training full contact, or at least semi-full is the way to go. I’d rather fight someone who did 20 years of conditioning than someone who did full contact training for 10% of that.

The problem is not Shotokan. Is the focus of your Dojo. Shiai Kumite is really watered. It's just the sport side.
I practice Shotokan myself. My Sensei teachs the moves, their proper forms, names, and applications. When teaching Kata he always demonstrate 3 or 4 applications to each move.
But there's also sportive Kumite training. I use this only to get better condition and help the other students that are interested in competition. Because I train for the 'Do' part of Karate-Do. In my Dojo we practice all Kata with strength to each move. And from Green belt to forward we have Jyu Kumite, that's is real fight without the WKF rules. (Here the belt color sequence is, white, yellow, red, orange, green, purple, brown, black).
During our belt exams, we have at least 4 Dan s at the table. And at anytime they can ask for the name of a technic,l or a demonstration of a kata move application. So here if you don't now what you are doing you will not even get the first color.
So the problem is not in the style. Is in the focus of your Sensei. Shotokan is not Light, and the objective is to react quick and end the fight with one precise and strong blow.

Did both Kyokushin and Shotokan back in Japan in the 90's and to be honest Kyokushin have little chance to be an Olympic Sport. Their fight competitions are not meant to be a "sport" where everything is fair and balance, they even lack a weight category (at least back in the 90's) Kyokushin tournaments are, if anything, feats of strength. That and point karate is way, way more spread in the world.
