All hell broke loose after the Vikings failed to draft a player before time ran out
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 кві 2021
- Ever wonder what happens if a team runs out of time in the NFL Draft? Well, in 2003, the Minnesota Vikings did just that when they were on the clock with the 7th overall pick. While trying to make a trade happen, they let their entire 10 minutes run up and gifted all of us with a little draft day chaos.
Thankfully, the brilliant and forever wise NFL foresaw such stupidity and had some rules in place to make sure everyone knew what to do. Of course, what I mean by that, is the NFL just created a complete scramble drill that sent everyone into overdrive. Just perfect planning.

Okay Pimpsta🙄
This is definitely something that the Vikings would do.
And something that the Bengals would do too
Lmaooooooo facts
It REALLY is. Speaking as a lifelong Vikings fan. I was a teenager when this happened and I remember it like yesterday.
I'm surprised the lions or jets didn't do something like this.
Shut up ☹️
The SB artist either really loves drawing ravens or really hates drawing Brian Billick
honestly either is entirely valid
I prefer to believe the owner of the Ravens is in fact a sapient, talking Raven

Porque no los dos?
I love how Jag’s instead of recognising the situation and being empathetic they just went, hey screw you bud, and picked.
Their clock starts when the vikings' ran out, so it would have cost them materially to wait for the vikings to get their act in gear
It's a cold league
Why? The vikings could have picked the player they wanted
All is fair in love and war. The Ravens and the Jags wanted the same guy and the pick fell into the Jags lap free of charge. Why not take advantage of the opportunity?
It's rude to interrupt the enemy when they're making a mistake.
I like the idea that belicheck just spams a phone for 10 minutes and he ends up with Trevor Lawrence at 15
that would mean 140 minutes, which is infinitely more amusing
There's no way that isn't resulting in a fine
@@kelvinnguyen7883 if we’re being technical here, that would be akin to a DOS in terms of causing a disruption of service through malicious spam. So, it would probably be a federal charge for wire fraud or something similar.
It’s still a funny thought though.
Funny thought/idea, but also not how it works. Teams hand the name in on a card, so spamming the phone wouldn't stop a team from making a pick. No way the Jags were going to offer to trade the pick, so it's not even like they could have been tied up and not realize the time expired.
@@thegoldfly1 _it's not even like they could have been tied up_
I mean, if we're already going to talk about crime...
The Ravens got screwed. After losing out on their guy Byron Leftwich, they had to settle for some scrub named Terrell Suggs.
The Vikings, for what it's worth, also got a legendary defender in Kevin Williams, who could end up in the Hall of Fame. He's no T Sizzle, but both players were absolutely A+ selections.
Facts and in the end he lived up to his draft slot

@@mr.gentlezombie8709 Williams is a easy hall of fame and it blows my mind he wasn't a finalist this year but allen was.

A raven with no patience for busy signals.
They're called the Ravens for a reason. :D

This feels very Lioney, so I was very grateful that it wasn’t the Lions.
That was the year the Lions drafted Charles Rogers at #2....ugh.
Same thing here if Detroit could screw it up they will find a way
It would have been if this was the year the VIkies took Troy Williamson with the Moss Trade 1st round comp pick, but no this was the year they took Kevin Williams(DT) who turned out to be a perennial pro bowler.

This also happened in 2011 in another trade involving the Ravens and an NFC North team. The Ravens were on the clock and thought they had a trade with the Bears but Chicago never called the league to confirm. I think they might’ve secretly been trying to get back at Baltimore because “nobody gets to make our division rivals look dumb except us”

At least something good came out of this Minnesota sports moment-the Vikings ended up drafting Kevin Williams that year.
Yeah that should be mentioned they drafted Kevin Williams who was is likely a HOF
and probably saved some money drafting a couple spots lower
@@johnl.7754 Is that really how it works, it's based on the actual draft spot you use instead of the one you're assigned/trade for? I feel like if that were true and a team knew the next team(s) in line wouldn't take their pick, they'd just wait out the 10 minutes intentionally to save money and we'd see this happen all the time
@@johnl.7754 they lost atleast a few 3rd round picks tho
This is why none of us Vikings fans care about this: the pick ended up being a great choice so it all worked out in the end.
Vikings ended up getting a really good DT in Kevin Williams but the Ravens got a future HOF LB in Terrell Suggs. So both made out with good players.
Williams will be in the Hall too eventually. Not many 5x first team all-pros not in the Hall

I remember this, it's kind of hilarious this happened to the Vikings and they still got a decent player (and the Jags got Leftwich). It also kind of happened to them in 2002 when a trade fell through, and they got a pro bowler with their pick there too, just complete karma for other teams dancing around them on draft day
Decent player is putting it lightly
Kevin Williams was a 5 time first team all-pro, 2000s all decade team member, got a decent HoF case
The vikings picked 6 time pro bowl DT Kevin Williams lets chill out here on the roasts

@@TJ22_83 could have if the Ravens called it in. So essentially they couldn't have gotten 2 more picks.
I love the idea of the Jags just *67-ing the number repeatedly so the Ravens would get the busy signal no matter when they called in that time and the NFL weren't able to figure out what team was doing it.
As a jags fan I can assure you the club rarely do something intentionally smart

Weird Rules is what introduced me to SB, glad to have it back!
Alternate title: All Hell Broke Lose When The Vikings Acted Like The Vikings.
Didn't they do the same thing the next year?
You should do one of these episodes but for the time Real Madrid wanted to sign David De Gea from Man Utd, but Man Utd's fax machine mysteriously stopped working right before the transfer deadline (literally, minutes before midnight, which was the deadline). So Real Madrid's signing contract "didn't come over the fax machine in time" before the deadline. And so David De Gea remained at Man Utd where he was easily the best player on the team for the next 4 or 5 years, saving their arsed every game, winning points on his own, which for a goalkeeper is no mean feat
What impresses me is that, on the 21st century, year closer to 2020 than to 2000, they use a fax machine. Two outrageously rich institutions
There could be a whole special on adventures in trade/transfer/contract faxes. Elvis Dumervil got cut by the Broncos before the 2013 season because he couldn't get a FedEx Kinkos fax machine to work until 8 minutes after the deadline to submit his renegotiated contract.
A fax machine? What are they, a doctor's office?
@@CrescentCitySweaters This happened in the NHL in the 1990s as well. I don't remember the details that well, except that Kelly Kisio was involved. The NHL's fax broke down; they would have allowed the trade, but they needed all of the teams to consent, and one of the divisional rivals objected.
The Raven drawing is adorable.
Also, love the series.

You should do an episode on the 1983 sale of the St. Louis Blues and how their draft went that year, because that is a wild story, though probably more suited for "that's weird".
And the fact that they almost moved from Missouri to Saskatoon

Ever since this happened, I always find excitement during the draft rooting for the teams to run out of time
“Vikings gonna Viking.”

The Ravens picked Terrell Suggs, so I think they won this situation.
Instead of drafting Byron Leftwich, who only had three seasons of 10+ starts in his career, only one of which was above average, the Ravens instead drafted Terrell Suggs who ended up finishing number eight all time in sacks, so I would say they got pretty lucky.
The fact that 4 picks got made in like 4 minutes makes this sound exciting. We should set up the draft so that every 4 or 5 picks all just go at the same time, first to the podium wins their pick first. They could even make the person who brings the card up to the league run an American Gladiators style obstacle course to bring the card.
I now have the old school American Gladiators theme running through my head, thanks a lot!
ravens got suggs bc of this incident! best mistake to happen
This is horribly done. How could you not mention the 2002 NFL draft? The Cowboys picked 6th and were trying to trade with the Chiefs who picked 8th and the clock hit 0:00. The Vikings, picking 7th, tried to hand in their card after the Cowboys' clock expired but the NFL told the Vikings "No, it appears the Cowboys and the Chiefs are working on a trade, we're going to give them some extra time."
WELCOME BACK OLD FRIEND!
The return...
They should just do edited videos. Instead of making it look like a podcast. You get a better feel for the video then watching two people explain it who wasn’t even there.

Great seeing Clara on camera again! Also, if I were the Vikings, when/if we were to ever go against the Ravens, I would have gone out my way to stomp them out every time, for _at least_ half a decade.

Man I remember this happening live. I’m a Vikings fan. My dad was so damn mad that the guy that beat the Vikings to the podium was basically handicapped 😂
This is possibly the most awkward 7 minutes of video since the "I would really prefer if you'd be quiet" incident. I haven't really watched any SB since they became Secret Base tbh, so I'm not sure how long they've been on the diversity hire train. She really just sits there while Will tried to make a normal video, but decides to interrupt every other line with something wrong or unfunny, laugh uncomfortably, then go back to contributing nothing. If you can find a woman who's knowledgeable about sports and is a solid presenter, then by all means bring her on board, but I'm yet to see even one that checks either of those boxes in the last few years of woke-ized sports broadcasting.
Would you guys ever do a video, where each of you states your favorite teams across whatever leagues you guys enjoy watching? I would interested in that.
Well done to whoever had the Raven screaming 'Nevermore, suckers'. Wasn't expecting a Poe reference in the middle of all of this but had me chuckling.
"The Baltimore Ravens" is, and always has been, a Poe reference.
@@georgenewman4464 Oh, right. Thanks, I didn't know that until now. Don't watch a lot of NFL or football but I enjoy SB's coverage of the sport.
It's funny to hear teams turning the pucks in so Quickly cuz sometimes i get a sense from watching on TV, that they're forced to wait the entire time to turn their pick in.
Step 5: Neglect Family 😂😂😂 Jaylen Waddle and Aaron Rodgers certainly took that one to heart 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
What makes this situation funnier is that 3 teams involved picked franchise players.
Panthers' Jordan Gross started 11 NFL seasons and made the pro bowl 3 times
Vikings' Kevin Williams started 12 NFL seasons and was a 5 time first-team all-pro
Ravens' Terrell Suggs played 15 NFL seasons and is the team's all-time sack leader
god i love that red wings hat. will, please share your secrets of where you got it.
Intersting that the Jags made a good move to just turn in their pick ASAP, but their pick was the only one in this story to not be a pro bowler
Do these people not understand, that it takes time due to last seconds trade ups or downs, or simply trades with players vs round picks etc etc, especially if a team really wanted one guy but was already picked
In a draft where the only first-round players that amounted to anything were. Andre Johnson. Terrel Suggs. Troy Polamalu & the pick the Vikings eventually made Kevin Williams.
The only new information I learned here is that people still make "Mission Accomplished" jokes lol....
In 2003 teams got 15 minutes to make a selection in the first round. 10 minutes didn't come into play until 2007 so the Vikings wasted more time than originally mentioned. Also, they ended up winning because they got the better player out of the 7-9 selections
