  • Info by Sharyn Broni (DOC) Mod :
Today the chick at the Royalcam nest is 26 days old and weighs 1.82kg. Rewind back to around 10.40am NZT to see the action. As the chicks grow a basket is used to weigh them in. OGK and YRK have been coming back for change overs quite frequently which has lead to healthy weight gains for their chick. The heaviest chick today is 2.72kg.

I see a lot of people talking about it so:
These birds have been habituated to the scientists, and are used to them. I've noticed that in their albatross videos they have a specific, easily recognized uniform, and the albatross in that area are used to them being present from a young age. I saw some other people point out that they aren't used to land predators, which is correct. These nests are in New Zealand, where there are no land based predators, and as such don't fully recognize the potential danger in having a large creature coming close to them and interacting with them.
I have also seen a lot of people asking/complaining about whether or not they feed the albatross. They don't, because they don't want the albatross to associate them with food. They don't want to encourage these birds to seek out people for a snack, which can but the birds in danger in a myriad of ways, or to beg from the researchers when they're trying to do tests. Would feeding them make the birds more 'friendly?' Yes, but at both the birds and researchers detriment. So they don't.
The point of these interactions is to keep an eye on the health of the albatross population, not for them to become dependent on people.
That said, the trust they've established with the birds is important. The scientists near ritualistic slow movement and deliberate touches are 'signal behaviors' which further indicate to the birds that the scientists aren't predators. Some of the researchers do a beak touch before trying to access the eggs, or 'garden' the area around the albatross's nest, as shown in some of the other videos.
As for albatross intelligence, they can absolutely recognize the uniform, and I would guess at least some of them do recognize the specific researchers they interact with. Just because they aren't parrots doesn't mean they're totally clueless.
It's really cool to see this type of research is available to watch. Thanks for uploading these.

why u comment when u have no clue? new zealand is ridden with land predators now as humans introduced many, these are on remote small island where its still safe, albatross dont need to recognise people in any island with any albatross species u will find them very docile as they spend all their life flying around southern oceans and dont deal with humans and have no fear of them, the weighting of the chick is useless data that so far had absolutely no useful outcome, if there was food shortage and loss of weight in chicks u could see it clearly by simply comparing foto, knowong exact grams is meaningless, really dumb disturbance of birds

To keep the natural order thriving, you never interact with wildlife by feeding them in an unnescerary way which would change the wildlife (the Albatross) behaviour in wanting to depend on human interaction which can make a huge impact in a negative way on their diet. (Even if it's a small treat, the bird would rely on humans to give them food over caught food)

@@Chlrintruc my statement is based on psychological change of the animal’s behaviour on how it would perceive human interaction and would be dependent on those friendly interactions rather than being an independent animal. Of course one treat wont change the Albatross’ behaviour, but if a repetitive friendly interaction occurs then that is an issue.

It might only be an issue if they feed the albatros so much that it doesn't need to go hunting anymore.
But a regular "doctors" visit with a little snack probably doesn't change anything in their behavior except getting comfortable around humans...
And even if you feed the albatros every day for a week so that it doesn't need to hunt during that time I doubt that it would forget how to hunt and simply starve once you stop feeding it :P

@@justinosborne256 Nah, the issue is that they'd become too comfortable with humans and seek them out, expecting food, which obviously can be very dangerous (re: unfriendly people, cars, farmers/fishermen shooting them, becoming dependant on humans for food). We've done all our pet creation about 20-40,000 years ago (dogs). Obviously more recently for the 'domestic' cat (7500 BC), I say domestic loosely as they're still part-wild, hence why they shouldn't be left to roam about our bush and eat native birds, which would be another issue if these lovely birds came closer to humans: our pets!

I've seen documentaries about the Albatross, but I've never seen one next to a human. Now that's a big bird. I've read that they have a wingspan of 10 feet and they can weigh 25 pounds. I'm amazed at the trust between them. Moving slowly and calmly has a lot to do with it, I'm sure. It's wonderful.

At the end i think mama bird was worried they substituted her chick for another one. Many birds actually do worry about this due to the cucu. She is trying to figure out what took place.and is dumbfounded. It's interesting that she accepted the human and her beak claps was truly a communication meant to express her disaproval, it was not a physical attack. That is remarkable.
