  • 3 Walking Mistakes You're Making That Are Causing You To PLATEAU [walking to lose weight]
A few months ago, I came out with a video called walking is better than running. This video did REMARKABLY well and at this point in time is my most watched video. I think that's because intuitively and from experience, we have seen that running doesn't necessarily lead to weight loss. As a result of the walking vs. running video, a ton of AENpeeps have started to incorporate walking. In today's video, I'm sharing 3 common walking mistakes that are causing you to plateau with your weight loss goals.

I started walking about 2,000 steps per day, during the pandemic, in May. I tweaked my diet for amount, but did not cut out any food. I gradually moved to 10,000 steps, at home Costco, Target and any place that had long aisles. I wore a double mask. I started out at 212 lbs. and I now weigh 156 lbs. (a loss of about 56lbs.) I am 77 years old and I feel just wonderful. Next week, I will start to move toward that 15,000 steps.)

I just came home from walking at Costco. I did not get up to the 15,000 steps that I mentioned, but I do 10,000-12,000 each day, and I try to do some strengthening exercises. It is one year from this post and I now weigh 129 lbs. I am 79 1/2 and I have boundless energy. I do my own cooking, cleaning, shopping, etc. I feel very blessed. Thank you for inquiring.

    A little summary:
    1. 10k steps or more per day ☺️ the more you walk, the better
-> Challenge yourself each week (even if it’s only 500 steps). Try to push yourself to get to 15k steps a day
    2. Even if you are getting your steps, you don’t spread it enough. A long period of time of sitting = bad. 5-10min walks scattered around the day is good
    3. Only walking on treadmill = not the best option. Walking outside is better. At least 15 mins, so it minimises cortisol levels.
    Loved this video btw! ✨

I don't dig super deep in the comments, but I never seem to see people talking about being disabled or having chronic illness. There are days when getting out of bed and taking a shower feel like the best I can possibly do. I aim for about 3000 steps per day at this point and am thrilled if I get 3500. Is there anyone else out there dealing with chronic pain and fatigue that makes 10k steps seem impossible on the regular? On my great days I am getting upward of 5-6k steps and those are the BEST days of my current life. 10k... I miss the person who used to get that and more. I mourn her almost daily.

These people need to rethink their headlines and the way they message. And the rest of us: relax, do the research, and learn what is best for our own bodies. Thank you for the advice about not doing all the walking at once and then not again (i.e., staying still all day afterward). This is my 3rd day of 10,000 steps a day and this was the mistake I was making. I am glad to be corrected right away. Thank you, Autumn.

I have recently started to increase load when I walk and run. Over time I have lost about 15 lbs but to maintain progress (as there are limitations to how many steps I can walk each day for practical reasons) I have added a 15 lbs weight vest... and now, also pulling tire attached with hip-straps and walking sticks. In my mind, progress can be obtained in many different ways. And, due to practical reasons, walking take a lot of time of a day, adding weight or some other means to increas load can make sense for many. To some extend, increasing number of steps for progress is a great way, it also has limitations. Also, the body adapts to the new lighter bodyweight - so you can actually experience you need to double the load to maintain progress. Focusing on steps alone is a great start... but other ways to increase load should be taken into consideration by everybody.

As a stay at home Mom and a full time caregiver for a disabled parent I struggle getting my walks in. I have a rebounder for lymphatic drainage and use that to make up for the steps I can't get outside. I would love to know how rebounding compares to walking and running. I do well with steps during the week when I'm working. As a teacher I'm on my feet a lot. And I also tend to park far from entrances. You'd be surprised how quickly those steps add up.
I'm thinking this coming week I may start walking once around the building at work each time I get a break. And then after work I'm going to find places like downtown areas or shopping plazas or malls for bad weather days to walk for a half hour. Then walk again on the treadmill when I go to the gym. I think intentional walks on top of what I get at work will be helpful

I found myself feeling a lot better and weight falling off while I was working at a conference for 2 weeks. I was walking ~3 miles a day and almost all of it was outdoors. I knew I wanted to really amp up my walking and now realize the benefit I was getting from being outside as well. Going to go back to walking as many errands as possible and using the treadmill to fill in the gaps. Thanks for this. :)

After my two hip replacement surgeries, both my orthopedic surgeon & my chiropractor told me to walk. I started one month ago, one hour, every morning. I also started doing a lot of stretching for my hips, pelvis & lower back to start correcting bio mechanical problems I developed when I was disabled, which cause me chronic sciatic nerve & lumbar spine pain. I went on the ketogenic diet plan as well. I've done that diet before & do quite well on it. So far I've lost ten pounds & have made significant improvements with mobility & chronic pain management. I'm aiming to lose at least 40 LBs & correct my bio mechanical problems enough to be able to go back to the gym when this COVID business is over with. I had to stop training when my hips went to hell in a hand-basket from avascular necrosis. A severely restricted blood supply to the joint that kills the hip joint head so it collapses. Then you can't move the joint without severe, debilitating pain. Same damn thing happened to my brother. So I guess it's hereditary. Surgeon said it was.

Last year, I walked 20 miles over the span of one day. This year, I’ve got a goal of walking 21 miles in one day, before the year is over. Right now, I’m consistently at 15,000-20,000 steps per day, going above that and hitting 30,000 steps at least once a week. This year is almost over, so I’m hoping to meet my goal this next week.

Sassy Doe if you need to calculate Calories you can measure distance using Google maps. Just out of curiosity I measured the circumference of my local park's walking area here in London using a measuring wheel & it came to 874 meters. .which was very close to how much Google maps said it was. Distance & weight is all you need to work out Calories burned.

I started walking in late August 2020 to reduce my blood pressure. Around that time, I found your videos where you talk about walking for weight loss. Since then, I have lost a little more than 40 pounds and greatly improved my health, strength, stamina, muscle tone, flexibility, and energy. I walk about 20,000 steps a day (up to 25,000 for today). During the work week, I usually get in 6-8 miles of walking, spread throughout the day in 1-3 mile increments. On Saturdays, I challenge myself with one 8 mile walk. Sundays, I usually have a couple short walks plus a 4 mile walk in the afternoon. I've become addicted to walking!

I love walking and used walking to start my weight loss. That said, walking isn’t always harmless and the inactive need to be careful as they increase their mileage. Early on in my walking efforts I got a stress fracture in my right foot due to increasing my miles too fast and poor shoes. That sidelined my walking for months, but I still walk 5-6 days a week, often 15k-20k or more steps when I do walk. That said, walking is more painful now due to the past injury, which I might have avoided had I used more caution in upping my steps early on.

My husband suggested that I walked 10,000 steps, and before I had a moment to think or even walk 10,000 steps for the first time, he suggested I could increase it to 12,000 steps.
However, I have started walking and have now walked over 12,000 steps 4 times this week. I previously tried low carb diets, slim fast , running and walking, UA-cam workouts etc etc. Nothing has been more successful than walking 10,000 steps a day. It’s working, I am using Slim Fast still x two shakes a day and a normal meal. Because of the calorie deficit (I burn off 700-900 calories each time I walk) I am loosing weight whoo hoo!

Louise CornwellMorlin - how long is the distance you walk when you do 12000 steps? I personally don't measure steps, instead I use Google maps to measure miles on a long high road here in London & also used a measuring wheel to find the circumference of my local park because after walking 6 miles on the high road I then add another mile of walking in the park. Walking burns calories for me. .as long as I don't eat afterwards like a hog;-)

I was wearing 2× tops, size 16 pants, all i did was just walked no counting steps just walked ,and in a year I went down to wearing medium tops and size 12 pants, I also changed my eating lifestyle to a plant based one, everyone's body is different, you can walk at a slow pace and still loose weight, the key is being in tune to your own body needs, in my opinion counting calories and keeping up with steps just makes things more complicated, but to each's own ..I prefer to just work out for a hour with some good music and keep it pushing.......wishing everyone the best on their individual weight loss goals.
