    Does walking 10,000 steps per day ACTUALLY help you achieve your weight loss goal? What else can you expect from walking 10,000 steps per day outside of weight loss? Today, I'm sharing the science-y deets on what happens to your body when you start walking 10,000 steps per day. I also interviewed Craig from WheezyWaiter on his recent 30 day challenge where he walked 10,000 steps every day for 30 days.

      BMI was never a precise method to measure anything, some yrs back you were considered overweight in China with 23 BMI, yet ppl with more muscle mass then average joes can be 28 BMI and be total lean with 5-10% body fat. And you will not only lose your weight over 25 BMI but go well under 20 if your calory balance stays negative, and you eventually die, its not too complicated.

    I remember when I was younger I watched a season of the biggest loser Australia (let's not get started on how terrible that show is, but anyway...) and one guy got injured and they limited him to just walking. He was devastated because obviously he couldn't lose as much weight as the other guys doing crazy intense workouts right? Wrong. The guy actually lost more weight than anyone and I've never forgotten it. Obviously that's just one case, but I found it VERY interesting!

    • @DudeHack
      @DudeHack 4 роки тому +10

      @Really Though That's awesome!!! So happy to hear that, and walking can really help! I'm no fitness expert but in the last 3-4 months i've lost about 7kg of body fat. Most of that is because of the food I eat. And guess what... I still eat like "crap" sometimes. Burgers are my favourite and at least once a week I splash out and have one, but overall I keep track of my calories and just make sure I am in a deficit. So If I have some "crap" food, I just have to be extra strict the rest of the day. It's so much easier when I took on the mentality that it's not all or nothing. Still enjoy the foods you want, get some extra exercise, and keep the overall amount of calories you consume daily less than your maintenance level and you WILL lose weight. Good luck!!

    As a northerner I can’t stress enough how beneficial it is to get outside and walk (ski, snowshoe) in the winter. Bundle up and go outside. I noticed a huge improvement in my mental and physical health when daily outdoor activity became part of my routine. It can become so easy to get stuck in a routine of house to car to store to car to work and always feel like it’s “too cold” to spend time outside.

      I’m happy to hear that!! As someone who is used to 60-70 degree weather, I have zero ability to suggest walking outside when it’s cold out - but I love hearing from you and Craig that walking outside while it’s cold out is actually nice! Thanks for sharing!

    Walking is the greatest thing. I've always been quite skinny but was starting to devlop a big stomach. I decided to walk at least 10k steps per day. Initially I didn't think I could do it but now I regularly do 10k plus. I feel happier and healthier both mentally and physically.
    For anyone wanting to start, honestly just give it a go. If 10k is too much to do in one go (around an hour n 40 mins) break it down into chunks. 10 mins is normally 1k steps so 30 mins of walking will get you 3k steps.
    For anyone joining, best of luck 😁👌🏼👍🏼

    I think the whole “no pain no gain” mentality of the fitspo culture is really hurting a lot of people. In much healthier, thinner cultures in Asia and Europe, people don’t go to gyms. They walk every single day, usually after every meal. I used to hate exercise, because, go figure, pain sucks! Once I started walking every single day, between 15k and 20k steps, along with a mostly whole food diet, I felt great, it became relatively easy to control my weight while eating to satiety - even through menopause. And the best part is, I finally enjoy movement and don’t dread it. It feels fantastic to take a nice walk in nature, not a punishment. Yes, it won’t make you “shredded,” but I honestly couldn’t care less about that. Just trying to live my life.

    I am a 56 yr old male. Four years ago I lost a total of 37 lbs walking almost every day for about 6 months! since it was my first time I walked an awful lot, like around 8 to 12 miles a day at least 5 days a week, sometimes even 7 times a week. It was absolutely exhausting, and I must admit even overkill. I went from weighing 200 lbs to 163 lbs!! then I gradually stopped the walking. A few years later I gained about half of the weight back.
    As of this past December I started walking again! I love cold weather, so I still walk in the cold with several layers of clothing, and I am fine!! when I can't walk during very inclement weather I just cut down my calorie intake by half. The rest of the time I walk 10,000 steps a day 5 times a week, along with intermittent fasting of 12 hrs a day! I've been loosing easily 6 to 7 lbs a month since. Back in December I was weighing around 180 lbs. This morning I weigh 165 lbs!!
    What did I learned the second time around? consistancy as in walking at least 5 days a week. Dietary discipline as in eating healthy home cooked meals; and that includes a full breakfast, lunch, and dinner. No eating nor snacks after dinner til the following day at breakfast, and last I drink plenty of water throughtout the day, but none two hours before bedtime. I have also learned listening to my body as it gets older and worn out. These routines in my personal experience are all key in maintaining a weight goal, no matter what agel!! My personal goal is to get to 155 lbs!?

    Like most people, I don't feel like I have a lot of time to exercise. I started walking during my lunch break and it helped my with my anxiety and depression, but also I lost weight. I walk every weekday during lunch except when I have a lunch meeting. It doesn't matter the temperature or precipitation, I walk. It is a non-negotiable for me.

    • @GeoffreyCavalier
      @GeoffreyCavalier 10 місяців тому

      @@nimaltra7353 that depends on the exercise. And the walk. A walk to the grocery store or work just overlaps with travel time. Taking 10, 20, or 45 minutes to walk in the middle of my work day means I don't have to spend time traveling to go to a gym, and I never sweat enough to need spend the time to shower.

    I started 10K steps a day(?) 5 years ago and have dropped 100 lbs. The (?) is for the fact that I don’t do it EVERY day. I take a day off every 4 to 5 days and I don’t walk in rain or storms. I also don’t count every random step of the day. I go to the park and do 5 miles at a good pace. I usually do it all at once early in the morning or late in the evening if time allows. Or, I will split it up to 2 or 3 walks a day if that is what it takes. I do this year around. I listen to my body and will take time off or lower my distance if I need to for a short time. I used to have lower back pain but it is now gone. I also haven’t been sick since I started 5 years ago. It has changed my life!

  • @MrRainjunky
    @MrRainjunky 4 роки тому +3

    I`ve seen a few of your video`s and have subscribed as i find them informative. I see you`ve taken a bit of flak in some regarding your views about walking being better than fat burning for running. However I`m 63 been an exercise (and rain) junky all my life and, in general, I agree. Let me explain.
    In my 20`s, 30`s and 40`s i was a serious martial artist but also a long distance runner and running (power gliding using my legs as wings) was my preference. Marathons (7), half marathons (loads n loads), 15, 10 and 7 mile races i tried them all. (although given a choice my favourite was along a beach in the rain at night mmmm). Even on tick over I used to cover 30 miles a week or so as well as train for 5-6 hours martial arts and hit the gym at least twice. (i had a problem-i didn’t feel well unless i exercised-something I`m sure you have also experienced).
    In my 50`s i dropped the martial arts but not the running. Yet, all that time whilst I ate like a damn horse (Except all Saturdays and Sunday until 2pm when i fasted totally except tea and water -something my father taught me) I had a constant body fat percentage of about 10-12% and most of that was around my middle. If you look at the build of marathon runners you can see whilst they are thin as rakes they often carry a little tummy above a lean six-pack, or rather smoothed off six pack with subliminal definition rather than cords of muscle. And don’t look to the professional athletes, go along to an “ordinary” meeting to see it
    .
    That little tummy of mine never disappeared all the time i was running. Due to an accident in my mid fifties I had to stop exercise, and to my surprise found i liked it. Rather a lot. Then i got divorced and started to party. And really really enjoyed that! My residual fitness (and metabolism gathered over years of exercise) lasted about 4 years then an extra stone became two, then three and was creeping up to four by the time i hit 60.
    I joined a gym and started to run (or rather jog and gasp) but due to a dodgy knee found if i go over 3 miles it aches like a @@@@@@@@ and the pain ain`t worth it. So i settled on a 2 miler 3 times a week, but that barely shifted much so i tried walking. Being a sad, lonely old git that lives alone (except if im lucky, or the kids come round wanting an, “Oh dad would you mind...” favour) coupled with not owning a tv (try it, you`ll like it) i have time so decided on 5 miles a day coupled with OMAD and a fast on Saturdays (except a bottle of something good). The 5 miles soon went up to 7.5 and has stayed that way. I never count the steps at home and wont be a bloody slave to a damn fitbit, it causes anxiety i`ve seen it in others.
    In the last two years (I`m 63) i`ve lost all the weight i gained and down to a few pounds above my natural 11.5 stones with a body fat that floats at about 15%. And my “Tummy” is gone. My waist is now 2” thinner than it was when i was 25. At first i thought you was wrong but on reflection I`m sure you are right. I will continue to look at your vids and its nice to someone thats obviously smart.
    As an aside, I`m utterly and completely sure that a body sets a “Blueprint” around the ages of 25-27 that it refers back too when exercise and a sensible diet are engaged. It used to be old gym wisdom, but you rarely hear it talked about, and muscle memory is not the same thing.

    You see better results if it is continuous walking rather than breaking it up. The Body just gets warmup in the first 20 mins...so breaking will not help much. 1.5 hrs is all it takes for 10k steps

    • @acidset
      @acidset 3 роки тому +3

      Yep, I'd much rather walk for 2 hours or so at 6AM, just after breakfast. You get it out of the way first thing in the morning, and you feel good all day. Plus, the warmup and you just break a sweat by brisk walking and take a shower just after that.
      However if it's haunting or you just wanna break it down, you definitely can but I feel it should still be a big session and then a small walk after a meal or something, while still getting some steps in from every other activity.

    This is a very helpful video. For me personally, in those -35 C days of Montreal it's really hard to get all my 10k steps outside, I would automatically get 5k going to work and coming back, and I would also choose a bathroom far away on campus so that would be like a 1k automatically, but the rest, I would do at home while reading(2 birds!). I really needed the mental assurance that it's still much better to do it at home than to not do it at all especially for those cold Montreal days where it's just simply NOT possible to walk outside for too long.

    First! Also, I walk 20 to 30k steps a day. It definitely works. My weight, is 125 lbs, and i am a 5'8 male. Yet, because of all of this walking, i eat 2400 kcal a day and dont gain a single pound. That is the same amount as my 180 lb 6 foot friend who is inactive. Walking alone allowed me to break through my weight loss plateau from 140lbs to 125 lbs in 6 weeks. Before anyone points to high BMR, I have a BMR of 1208 tested via indirect calorimetry.

    I lost 100lbs or so walking mostly within a few month period, but you have to undereat as well, otherwise you won't lose weight very fast. Also it doesn't have to be pure fasting, because the goal was to be healthy and not just to look slim in the physique, so I would eat lots of raw vegetables and enough carbs just to keep me going so I wouldn't just throw in the towel and quit. And 2 years later, it worked--the weight is still off.
    Walking raises your metabolic rate, so you won't enter a lethargic crisis when eating less calories.

    I think part of the issue with gyms is let’s face it...gyms can be really boring. Yes there are classes but it’s often more difficult to line up work and class times. What I’ve finally realised is that I can walk, I do an Irish dance class once a week, I have a ballet fitness video, I ice skate sometimes, and I like to swim. Exercise doesn’t have to be boring!
    I also invested in a fitbit, best deal ever! It really has helped me a lot. I’ve also walked from one of my apartment to the other to get my steps. I’ve been off work recently and promised myself I’d walk every day. If I’m working I try to walk in the morning but it’s difficult in the winter.

    I’m 5’7” started at 214 lbs. I used to work a cubicle job for the government. Something told me to quit and everything would be ok. I ended up spending more time with my then 4 year old, got him into Jiu Jitsu and also became a gestational surrogate. Now after my son and 2 baby girls, I feel the weight is taking longer to come off but then I started working at my sons private school, as a daycare worker ( which JS me outside playing/ walking with the kids) and I went from like 2k-4K steps to 7k! Now I’m 208lbs but have to change eating habits, sticking to only water and definitely getting the 10k a day. Starting on a random day but starting in a bit, at 6am! Need to be at 190 lbs to be cleared to start surrogacy journey #3! Praying for a good family to come my way, praying we get matched and start this journey!

    I have been walking for 30-60 minutes daily for 3 weeks, as an average. I haven’t really seen the scale budget, but I feel stronger and my body seems to like the walking.

    I've been attempting to walk 10,000 steps a day. I work an 8-6 desk job and typically go home and work on my own video work. In the past month, I've only been able to hit 10,000 steps 3 times. I typically only get just over half the steps. But I'm working in lunch time walks and getting closer to the goal each day.

    Just got back from walking the dogs in the cold. And dark. But I got my steps in. I would not be outside in the dark (with a flashlight) and cold if I didn't have my dogs. That would be my advice -- to make yourself get out and walk at the end of the day. Get a dog. They love it. It's good for their health and mine. This video was inspiring. Going to try and hit my step goal for 30 days straight.

      Same as. We got a dog in September and we go out every single day, two of three times most days. We live near the sea and the weather is often bad but we go out on days that we wouldn't have in the past. I do IF, reduced carbs (not very low) and my weight is coming down slowly but surely.

      Dogs are good too because they make you feel protected, at least I would, walking in nature can be a lil scary

    I first listened to your walking video while i was out walking listening some of my favorite creators. I've been trying to get at least 10K steps a day for the past 18 months. Started this initially just to get some lower impact exercise and also get my dogs some outside activity and I've noticed not only is my stress level reduced but the pups are better behaved on days we go for walks, hard to get into mischief when they're sleeping. We're in the northeast so on days i can't get outside I use a spin bike to get my 'steps' in for the day. If you have a Fitbit or other watch type step counter just put it around your ankle instead of your wrist, or a pedometer in the leg of you bike shorts. Picked up the IF bundle which i'll be starting in Jan.

      I do the same thing! I take my dog (a husky, blue heeler mix with a LOT of energy) out for multiple daily walks and she loves it! And then she sleeps while I work the rest of the day so it’s a win win 🙌🏻 Thanks for sharing your story and tips!

    I’ve started walking every morning as part of my weight loss goals. I know diet can cover most of my weight loss, but I also want to be in better shape. I like to try and get 10k steps in at once, usually taking me an hour or so, and then the rest of the day my steps are bonus added on. I’ve felt significantly better. The best way to describe it is that for most of the day following I feel limber. I am loosing weight, cause it’s been a while now, and that’s definitely helping. But I remember the first day I started walking, I just walked for an hour and a half and the rest of the day I felt amazing.

    I’m walking around 15,000 steps a day! Love my Fitbit. It has made a tremendous difference. I’ve lost some weight, not a lot, but the main improvement is that my blood pressure which had gotten severely high and uncontrolled has returned to perfect! I get it done early and get in more as the day progresses. None of the orthopedic injuries often associated with running. A YMCA friend, a retired pediatrician, saw my results, got himself one and loves it. I got it to count treadmill steps by not holding the handrails. Try it. You’ll like it!

    *I HAVE A REQUEST!* - CAN U PLEASE MAKE A VIDEO ON NEGATIVE IONS?? Does a creek or pond make them? If it's just forest, is there none? & Thank you for saying it takes about an 1hour and 40 mins to get 10000 in! I didnt want to have to buy a fit bit just to find out and then not use it lol. I'm doing about an hour, so that wasnt enough, I do two walks a day. Your the best!
