  • In this video I show how I successfully copper plated a motorcycle carburettor part ( because it was going rusty and causing problems) using only distilled water and baking soda. This is also my first attempt at copper plating, but it turned out just fine.

    That's not copper sulfate. Neither salt nor baking soda have sulfur in them. Your solution is likely suspended copper oxide(s). This is why your part came out dark.

    That's not copper plated, copper will not plate directly to aluminum or any ferrous metals. You first need to plate with zinc or nickel and then overplate with copper, it will come out looking like bright copper and not an oxidized coating which is what you have there.

    I had better luck with copper acetate - made by throwing some old pennies (degreased) into white vinegar. For plating on steel, you should have a strike coat like nickel first.
