just wait until the EGR valve fails at 60K miles and you have to replace the entire valve cover for $1800, and your hydraulic engine mount goes bad around 70K miles for another $1600... I've been driving Mini for nearly 20 years, and the pricey replacements of the most mundane yet over-engineered and needlessly complicated things on the F56 has convinced me that I'll never buy a new mini again. Maybe I can find a nice R53 with low mileage...
Yes, but if you’re gonna put something at the bottom of everything else, probably the battery which only has to be changed very rarely is the right thing. I just swapped out the original 2018 battery for a new one so if I don’t have to do that again for six years then I’m OK the extra effort to get down to it.
this video was excellent! Super helpful. My 2015 F56 Cooper S (which I'm the 2nd owner since 2018) started acting funny in the last week or 2 with the cold weather in the Midwest... battery seemed to be the source. I've never replaced it in the nearly 7 years I've owned it, so assume it was the original battery (which was confirmed upon removal, as it was the German BMW battery). Was able to pick up the battery replacement last night at CostCo, and with less than an hour of work, tools I already own (other than the $35 BimmerLink app), I was able to replace the battery. Was even a bit of a teaching moment for my 17yo. Really appreciate you taking the time to go through the step-by-step process, which was very straightforward, but honestly I probably wouldn't have attempted disassembling all of that without the tutorial video! Nice job New channel subscriber here!
Thanks for the kind words! I just finished a new radio screen installation that I did so that I could have Apple CarPlay and add a backup rearview camera. It should be added in the next few days, if that’s something you’re interested in
Thanks for the video. I've got a couple of observations. #1 If you're using your jumper cable battery kit to preserve the memory, you don't need to buy the memory saver kit. Just attach the jumper cable kit to the battery cables under the hood. Same result. #2 and this is, potentially, a big one, I don't think you have to remove all the parts forward of the battery wall and slide the battery out. If you just remove the pieces around and above the battery, the battery WILL lift out. However, you'll have to disassemble some of the wires connected to the battery cables to get them out of the way. I saw this done on another video here (unfortunately after I'd changed my battery out). An extra minute or two spent on the battery cables is a lot easier than pulling out all those other parts.
Thank you for posting, I have just changed my battery on my f58 mini I didn't think coding was a thing! Car started up fine all throughout that day but next day it won't crank.
Nothing in the handbook about changing battery! Obviously BMW/Mini don’t want you doing this yourself……bloody daylight robbery. Thanks for the video. X
If you store the mini for months at a time and only disconnect the negative terminal, then reconnect when you want to use will you have to reset computer or anything else.
Great video. Thanks for posting. Would you happen to know why the new battery won’t register? I’m using ZURICH ZR-BT1 Bluetooth code reader. Battery was upgraded from flooded to agm.
@@DadHacks No error messages. Zurich ZR-BT1 just didn’t work. Message said that the battery could not be successfully registered. I ended up getting Zurich ZR-11s scanner. It worked without any issues. Thanks again for your help.
@@DadHacksoh nooooo how do I do the update with out going to the dealership costing me a fortune? In canada the dealership wanted to charge me over 700$
@MellyLucy the cheapest way to do the update is to get this Bluetooth ODB2 unit amzn.to/40R3Akd and then download the BimmerLink app to register the battery
Hey! I’m a mechanical engineering student at the University of Houston and working on my senior design project in which I could really use some advice. I’ve watched all your videos about converting power wheel vehicles but still have some questions. I was wondering if you would be open to setting up a call and talking through what parts we may need to consider. Please let me know!
The alternator will “over charge” the battery because it thinks it’s older and it needs to be charged more. Could the battery last 3 or 4 years, yes; but if it’s properly registered it could last 8+ years
I think we all agree, the procedure required here is so amazingly over complicated. Clearly BMW wants you to use them! That said there are a few battery replacement videos out there I’ve viewed….and this is without doubt the best step by step, clear and concise one there is. Great Job. From UK.
@kerrycoburn3971 Thanks for the kind words, great to hear! FYI, if your Mini doesn’t have Apply CarPlay or Android Auto and you’re looking to upgrade, I’ll be dropping an install video for a new radio screen head unit with reverse camera installation this weekend! (So many projects with this car 😀)

Ridiculous taking all of the parts out to remove battery. All you need to do is remove the cover of the battery and the bolt that secures it in place and just lift the battery out. Dear Lord.
I'm so glad I found this video. My sister's Mini just started doing the same thing when turning on! Thank you!
Most excellent. I have been thinking about getting a Mini and all my research displays how tedious it is to do the simplest things.

Scanner tool? Where do i get it from and do i really need it?
I have links for the scan tools if you click the description of the video. If you don’t use it, your battery might last 3 years instead of 7+ years
What happens if i dont register the battery?
The alternator will think the battery is old and try to over charge it, thus weakening the battery prematurely causing it to not last as long
