I guess I'm simply too old for this kinda joke culture and probably even the youtube comment section at all, but I never did get this joke, and I mean, for it have lived on for SOOO long and only ever having been based on Miura mentioning idolmaster in passing, I don't even remember in what context myself... Sorry but I finally just HAVE to ask, is it REALLY that funny? Do people honestly laugh at this? Sorry if I'm being a downer, I understand the fun "fact" bit is also part of the joke, it's just a bit annoying since some people obviously will take it as fact 😅

Early Berserk is a lot more clear with it's own inspirations. The very start is directly inspired by the opening of the Conan the Barbarian movie and the God Hand is inspired by Hellraiser, you weren't imagining that. Thanks so much for this review, I just found your channel and have been enjoying the Jojo episodes.

Honestly, doing 3 or so volumes per episode would work pretty fine for Volume Done. Berserk quickly rose to my top manga of all time, alongside Punpun and 20th Century Boys! Would love to hear all of your thoughts on the story and art as it progresses.

One more thing about berserk.When the whole world was raving about the awesomeness of Game of Thrones as one of the best Dark fantasies they've seen or read(including things like the red wedding etc.)i was telling my friends that it is a childrens fairy tale in front of Berserk.You'll see what i mean down the road.It's a shame that they haven't done it justice on the adaptation and thus not many people know about it.For me it is my favorite story and the best i've ever read in general.

I second this too, Jojo is another classic manga that's still ongoing since the 80s, just like the top three shonen for many years were Bleach, Naruto and One Piece the big three Seinen manga now are Berserk, Jojo and Vinland Saga IMO.
3rd this. I love Jojos. Its my favorite manga/anime. I wouldnt mind if you guys watched parts 1-6 then read 7 & 8. Stands are an EXCELLENT power system as well lol
Ohh yeahh you gotta read it with the ost... If you manage to catch Guts's theme when there is a emotional moment happening you will be on cloud 9.
Oh and when there is a war happening and Forces comes on you know it will be hype overload.
The creator of the Dark Souls series Hidetaka Miyazaki is a big fan of Berserk, there are people who went ahead and documented every single reference to Berserk in Demon's Souls/Dark Souls/Bloodborne/Sekiro and they are plenty, funny also how Dragon's Dogma (which also has a lot of Berserk references) and Berserk 90s anime are both examples of opening songs that at first glance don't fit at all with the genre of fantasy but grows on you eventually (Dragon's Dogma - Into Free ~Dangan and Berserk - Tell Me Why - by PENPALS), that said the music of the 90s Berserk anime by Susumu Hirasawa is so damn iconic and became inseparable from Berserk, so much so that the composer was hired to do the music for all the Berserk video games afterwards, my top picks would be Forces, Gut's Theme, Behelit and Sign from the PS2 Berserk game (which sadly was never officially translated and released in USA/Europe).
Also the Berserk movies are considered the best adaption so far (followed very closely by the 90s show despite the changes here and there) .. the less mentioned about the 2016 anime the better, they gave to an inexperienced director and really botched both the 3D models and animations, not sure what they were thinking.
Pretty sure most people still consider the 97's anime the best adaptation
I've listen to a lot of videos recommending berserk but I think this one actually makes me want to read it. Going to check it out now.

EDIT: Very sad update as Young Animal's editorial department has announced today that Kentaro Miura had passed away on May 6th from an acute aortic dissection. While obviously not the focus of this heartbreaking news, I hope the reviews continue if only to honor Miura-sensei through the avenue most of us came to know him and his stories.
I started reading this last week because I made a deal with a friend. In exchange for her watching and reading JoJo I’ll read Berserk and I’m happy to say neither of us have any confessions to make. While I don’t feel like I’ve read far enough to put it my top 10 I literally cannot think of a single thing I don’t love about it so far. I can already tell that it’s gonna be in my top 10 favourite manga soon. Maybe top 5.

I agree with Cody, this is classified as essential reading. I will love and hate when you read the last chapter of Berserk, by Kentaro Miura. I will cry as I have already have done in joy and loss from what this man has done to my life. I look forward to the Volume One Podcast Journey. Hey guys loved this video, you should definitely do a Volume Done on this. You should probably spilt those videos into 4 for each arc (Golden age, Conviction, Falcon of the millennium empire, & Fantasia it's the current arc and not finished) just because they are so huge and they are actually more like sagas with smaller arcs within it called chapters.
Part 2: But this was a great conversation and I think with these older series that have such a huge catalogue, i think a few volumes is actually the right amount to read because their pace was slower because they were building these troupes and manga cliches, modern manga breeze through because we're so familiar with them now. But Cody's point is still valid that you can still understand what the story is going to be about with one volume. Though there are exceptions, like with your Gantz episode Vol1 was good but the main story didn't get fleshed out until a bit later and I wanted to see that being discussed, after when they fight the monsters more and One piece is notoriously slow, i really think its a case by case basis and when the main story really begins.
Part 3: I know this is long but Josh was talking about getting a Brand of Sacrifice tattoo on the 1K special and I'm supporting you on that. I was going to get myself that as well, but totally forgot about it. If you do it, I will aswell maybe lol
First of all, words can’t express how much I look forward to seeing you and others getting to experience Berserk for the very first time. I made three playlists all with different types of songs. I was very selective with my song selection, mostly focusing on Susumu Hirasawa songs and exclusive Berserk OST’s from games and anime.
Hearing these songs while reading the manga enhances the experience, however, don’t feel like you always need to have a song playing in the background. Some songs are loops and some are not. Feel free to give me feedback if you prefer long looped songs versus shorter ones as well as the order of the song selection.

Umm I dont want to spoil anything, but the first anime mostly covers golden age, and golden age is like the prequal to the first arc... I think they decided to cut out Puck because they knew that they wouldnt cover more after the Golden Age. Idk its weird.
Also definitely just gained a new subscriber. I like your banter back and forth in general. The only thing I wish you guys did was not avoid spoilers lol just make a whole section to fully talk about the story and such.

Fun fact: in celtic myths the elves were the fairies that all of us know. So in those origins is right to name a fairy "elf".
The rest of the fiction was the responsible for separating elves from fairies.
P.D. The opening of the 97' anime is actually a parallel of how dark is Berserk in some parts. The lyrics are actually an ironic way to establish a depressing mood with a cinycal optimism.

I think Puck doesn't appear in the 1997 anime because besides the first episode which is way shorter than the first manga arc, it covers only the Golden Age arc, and Puck isn't in this arc even in the manga. If they knew they had to stop at the end of this arc, I could see how they ended up removing Puck because he's not really important for the story they had to tell, even though he's an integral part of the manga story.

Don't know if you check your old comments but I fell in love with berserk. I finished one piece like a year ago. And started looking around for reviews and podcasts and found your channel. Then I started Naruto anime but dropped it after 100 ep. Then I remembered an old friend of a friend raving about berserk. I gave it a chance and now I am hooked and 20 volumes in and can watch your videos now. I love your guys energy and summary of the major events. 10/10 podcasts. I can't wait till you become current with One Piece. If i could recommend 2 anime/manga I would pick mob psycho or Made in abyss.
I'm glad I got recommended your podcast. I'll definitely check more of your GANTZ and Berserk content, would love to see some Bleach/Naruto/Soul Eater content, if you haven't done them yet, these you most certainly are aware of. Another one of my favourites is Nana to Kaoru, I wonder if any of you heard of it or read it.
Some people already mentioned that Berserk was indeed inspired by Evil Dead and Hellraiser (Fist of the North Star too, AFAIK). Also, you mentioned seeing Kentaro Miura's first manga (when he was 10 years old): from what I've gathered, this manga (Miuranger) has not been revealed to the public, some of his later work gets mistaken for it.
Oh nice surprise, would definitely watch a volume done on this! I would recommend Vagabond once you're done with Berserk, it's usually regarded as part of the holy trinity of Seinens with great character development along with Berserk and depending on people's opinions, either Vinland Saga or Kingdom. And the art IMO is even better than Berserk which is a crazy thing to say.

1:01:04 "To introduce a character before you know who they are" One piece kinda does that with its main character where you only get Luffys FULL backstory halfway through the story.

In memory of Kentaro Miura after his unfortunate demise, I think it would be a wonderful tribute to just review all of Berserk up to the point it reached. Especially considering a lot of people are now just starting Berserk (All 8 of the deluxe volumes have been listed in Amazons top 100 selling books since new of Miura's passing last week , with Berserk deluxe 1 even breaking into the top 10 briefly! and all volumes are literally sold out everywhere as of writing this). Its sad that so many people discovered this series so late when it was nearing it's end, which may never come now but, its great to see that even 30+ years after it's debut it still holds up very well. I also love people seeing things from Berserk and realising how much it influenced many ongoing series today.

The 1997 berserk opening is one of my favourite of all time
It's so funny listening to them talk about Berserk's opening scene being too much to show on TV... when anyone who watched the 90s show knows what they do end up showing...
if u r reading berserk and wanna watch the anime... watch the 1997 anime and then 2013 the trilogy movie... but the best thing about all berserk anime adaptation is.... THEY ALL GOT KILLER SOUNDTRACKS... even the 2016-17(and it fits with its arc).... 1997 anime is mostly have some soothing music like GUTS theme and others and few hype music like forces, or even the end credits song is beautiful.... the trilogy movie has pretty ok soundtracks but it had ONE soundtrack that gets me every time, that plays at the 3rd movie ending(u know if u seen the movie).... and berserk 2016-17 has the most accurate guts rage musics that we see in the blackswordsman arc... put that song while ur parents ask u to do the chores and it fits really well

Now, with that out of the way, I greatly enjoyed the podcast. I agree with most of the points, so I'll just be saying that at first, I wasn't expecting to finish the entire podcast in one sitting... but it was so entertaining hearing you revisit and review the story that I just couldn't help myself ahah (this is the first video I see by your channel)
On the note of "how many volumes should one read to review something"... I think it would be fair to give "longer series" a review based on the first "arc" rather than a single volume. Referring to what you said, authors try to get the reader hooked within the first chapter or volume. But, depending on the lenght of the work, this can prove difficult. For example a story with 20 volumes will usually be able to present a much more significant portion of itself in the first volume than a story with 80 volumes. They may differ not only in volumes, but in how many "key details" are in each volume. Thus I think it would be fair to give stories like Berserk a review based on their indroductory arc (if they have one, like the Black Swordsman arc is for Berserk) or just based on how many chapters/volume you felt were needed to really "get introduced" to the story. These are my 2 cents, I hope you can have a nice read, please don't forget to provide Mehgan with tissues... for her nosebleed during the read. Much love!

As you probably already know, it's not as "great" as Berserk (lower production quality and storytelling) but it's still one of my favourite series. Even if the author has weird tastes, I found quite interesting how open and honest he is about it, rather than leaving weird undertones in his work he is blatant with it ahaha

Berserk is definitely one of the most influential manga I've ever seen. Definitely agree how dragons dogma has so much berserk in it and most of it is a direct reference. Black swordsman is great but the Golden Age arc is so god damn good that it kind of brings the black swordsman down just a little bit. Still I don't think that skipping the black swordsman is a good idea since having these questions surrounding the main protagonist and the antagonist keeps you wanting more.

When people talk about all the things inspired by Berserk they never mention final fantasy 7 which is weird because FF7 is so hugely famous... you know that game that came out in 1997... you know with the main character whose a lone mercenary... initially acts quite cold towards people like he doesn't care for them... he used to be part of the most elite and famous mercenary unit... wields a sword bigger then himself... his arch enemy is his former friend/mentor and leader of that unit... A guy with long white hair who was admired by everyone who met him... kinda lost his sanity and then lost his humanity.... now poses as one of the biggest threats to mankind and serves as the main villain and driving force for our hero... also has a strong association white wings and feathers... and then if you wanna go deeper down that whole the original owner of Clouds big ass sword had the same relationship with the villain, and short spiky black hair...
I mean FF7 definitely has it's own thing going on and is by no means a copy of Berserk but, Cloud/Zack and Sephiroth are prettymuch Guts and Griffith as their most base level.

In all seriousness, I think updates in chunks is a good idea. Next chunk should be like up to the end of volume 13 (which is the whole first 4 deluxe editions, plus the first volume in the 5th deluxe edition).
Puck suppose to be retconed. Cuz no one suppose to see "magic or demon" things, up until the eclipse. I mean it's always there, but no one knows of it. Also, Puck said that only certain ppl can see "elves."

As an American comics fan I can say that intimidation is real. Jumping into something like Spider-Man or even Invincible is super daunting. It’s part of the reason I haven’t started One Piece or Eyeshield 21.
