"Man's Search for Meaning", by Viktor Frankl, is a book written by a survivor of the Holocaust and the search of meaning through a life of suffering.
    "The Myth of Sisyphus
", by Albert Camus, is a book written by an existentialist philosopher about living without meaning even through endless torture.
"Fire Punch", by Tatsuki Fujimoto, is a continuation of those.
Living through pain for possibly all of eternity , always with the question of the "why?"
It's introduced in the very first volume as the philosophy of the village. "Even if you yield to other pains, refuse death."
It's in Doma's line about "Will you ever forgive me? I'm ready to do everything except die."
The manga may seem all over the place and like it doesn't know where it's going plot wise:
But it never ever loses sight of it's theme, even through any setting or tone the story may twist into, up until the very last chapter.
"You have to live. You have to."

Fire Punch and Chainsaw Man are very far apart for me. When I read Fire Punch it actually made me feel things. When I read Chainsaw Man I mostly thought "wow thats a cool idea/design!". I read Chainsaw Man first, and was surprised to find out that Fire Punch came first, because it felt like an improvement.

I also thought so, but maybe that's because we read fire punch first and tried reading chainsaw man with the expectations of a similar story and similar themes, but i noticed that chainsaw man leaned more heavily on the choosing your own life and making your own decision and accepting your complete freedom no matter how uncomfortable it is to move through doubt

    One of the best.
I actually drop it on 16 on 2017 since it lost its edge for me but after reading so many manga, manwha and that type of shit, rereading this again make it so enjoyable.
Before I didn't like the director since she kinda control the story and I don't know what she is saying. However, rereading this story again she emediately become the best character for me and I love her comentary about the cliches you can see on different types of story like how some of the story you can see today have that awful douchbag type of person that the author just created just to make the audience feel joy or satisfaction when they got killed by the main character (seriously you can see this type of shit on isekais and korean comics its unbelievable)
I also like how this story doesn't really have that "Villanous type of character" that you can see on many shows that when you kill or defeat that specific character the world will become peaceful again. The one thing I hate about those type of story is that there is one or group of people that is responsible to why the world turn to shit and for me it doesn't feel real. On this story on the other hand take it to the next level that makes it more real (if you read you know what I'm talking about).
I also love how some panels are just the character facial expressions without any dialogue and that is one of the reason why the characters feel more realistic compared to other manga out there where the characters feels like a paper cut and just there to give a bunch of exposition in the most boring way possible.
Another great thing about this is the Art. Compared to Chainsaw man the Artstyle feel more polished and have that Cinematic feel to it because of how well the panneling works and some of the panels don't have any dialogue.
*Also Fujimoto assistant when creating this is one of the best shounen author today which is Yuji Kaku the creator of under apreciated "Hells paradise" and Tatsuya Endo the creator of best wholsome sol "Spy X Family"
Overall, this for me is a must read, however you might not like it if you are new to manga, manwha, comics or anime since you might not understand what are the cliches on that type of medium that was tackled on this story. Another reason is that this story doesn't follow the trope that other stories did, and for me it is the reason why people are divided on Fire punch since it so new that it breaks all of your expectation.
This story is great so go fcking read it and read it again since there are things that you might enjoy after knowing what happens on the story. This manga right here has a great re-read value.

Fujimoto himself said that this manga isn't suitable with people who are new to the genre/manga in general.. It's for who bored with the manga and want to read something experimental..

To preface this, I think Fire Punch is one of the best manga of the 2010's and in my Top 5 of all time. I'm glad to hear that you guys didn't drop it completely because there are billions who got filtered by Fire Punch either by Volume 1, second half or the ending. I really hope Cody will read it because Togata explicitly references Spiderman 2. Yes, Spiderman is canonical to the Fire Punch universe.
The series gets better with each re-read in my opinion, personally I have read it 5 times now and enjoyed it more and more every time. Part of that reason is the absolutely stellar panelling. Fujimoto is flexing on everyone with the cinematic directing in FP, it legit reads like a movie. After all, it's widely considered "Kino" in the community. Since you sadly only covered Vol 1 I can't address much but I like how you guys adressed the dark stuff. I also want to say that it actually has many moments similar to Chainsaw Man (throwing yourself back to earth, hero worship being a detriment later, constantly shooting someone to stop the regeneration, and much more). The art is a lot better on a technical level, especially because during the time of FP Fujimoto had Yuji Kaku and Tatsuya Endo as his assistants who afterwards go on to make Jigokuraku/Hells Paradise (something you guys could review some day too *wink*) and Spy x Family, which should tell you their talent
I feel a little embarassed to make long posts like these but I really really like this manga so I already had to shorten it.
35:05 Always choose life. One of the first memorable quotes is "You may bear all other manner of pain and suffering but always resist death". Even Doma says he'll do anything except die
47:05 Horrible stuff doesn't always have to be shown. There's a reason why Fujimoto excluded explicit rape scenes. Like another manga reviewer, Japanophile, said: "Almost like Fujimoto knows it's tasteless." As long as an evil intention is established it achieved its goal, more or less.
55:55 Don't forget that Fire Punch was published on Jump+ which is still Shonen Jump and therefore technically a kids-teenage audience, which is why it was especially wild that it was serialized there.

we always apreciare getting insight from fans of the series.. I finished the whole series shortly after recording this and we absolutely intend on finishing the series review soon.
I love the joke I've been hearing that Fujimoto must have some sort of dirt on the Shonen jump guys that they keep letting him get away with publishing his stuff with them

Glad to hear that, really. It is known that Rin, Fujimotos editor since he was 17, basically lets him do whatever he wants. But it's that mentality that allows Rin to harness talent as he is also the editor for the Spy X Family creator. He also got promoted for his work and is now returning to Jump+ which is rumored to be one of the reasons why CSM Part 2 will be moved there, so Fujimoto can stay with his editor bf. It's rare to see this kind of creative freedom and the results are proof that it should be practiced more often.

I also think Chainsaw Man is much better, but Fire Punch is even less constrained than Fire Punch because it's in Jump+ rather than Weekly Shonen Jump. All of his works don't follow conventional story-telling methods, so when I reread Fire Punch (I read it back in 2018 when it ended, it was my first Fujimoto read and didn't really enjoy it), I went in there with blank expectations, and it was FAN-FUCKING-TASTIC. I don't know if I enjoyed it more because I've grown as a reader in that 2 year gap, or if my method of "blank expectations" was the trick to it, but there's so much to take in from Fire Punch and it tells a much more unique story.

    • @VolumeOnePodcast
      @VolumeOnePodcast  3 роки тому +1

its definitely a much more free form way of telling a story, I can't really compare it to anything, its a great example of an artist having a vision for a story and concluding it

ps he there actually a metaphor for questioning morality in fire punch...love the vid
like how agnis realises that the man he wants to kill is not as badshit crazy
he just has his own justifications (this happens in other series but not in the same way

1:25:00 Cody my man! I knew you were my kindred spirit. That BS used in revenge stories sucks so bad. It is always used as a method of "breaking the revenge cycle" but it is such an unfair thing that happens to the avenger.
"Oh you killed my whole family and I watched my sister LITERALLY burn infront of my eyes, but now that some time has passed and you move on, I'm supposed to let go?" Like no, you don't get to move on after something like that, especially some of the most awful things, such as torture and murder. At the end, if the avenger does not drop the issue and insists on revenge, they are usually seen as the bad guy (and are usually the villains of the story), while the heros let it go and become a better person.
