I owned a 2017 Smart ForTwo petrol and did 20,000 miles a year over the four years I owned it. Sold it a few months ago with just under 80,000 miles on the clock. Not a single issue with it and I easily got 60mpg equating to around 400 miles per tank so getting the electric only new one with only up to 100 miles per charge was a bit of disappointment. However, if you charge it every day just like you charge say your mobile phone every day it’s really not a problem and not having to visit a petrol station preying there’s not a big queue is an absolute dream! This is a highly underrated car! 🚗
That's a good point, although, some won't have easy access to a charging point - namely if you live in flat within the city centre.
@@TotallyEV Perhaps a solution to this is most Tesco supermarket car parks provide electric car charging points so you can charge while you shop
In an ideal world, there would be a lot more chargers everywhere and all of them readily working. But alas, that's not the case just yet!

@@danielrichards8472 not much of a problem in CA. Not quite there yet but public charges are almost everywhere around shopping areas and complexes, shopping outlets, in bank parking lots and public parking structure. Even at work. It’s just a matter of time.
I love my Smart ForTwo EQ. It's quirky and fun to drive. I got a new Premium version for £17,800, which is a lot less than the other vehicles mentioned.
I live on the edge of Sheffield, 13 miles away. Nearly all my journeys are 30 - 40 miles round trip. The ECQ is ideal for this. It stands out and looks great too.

If weight is what gets your nerves up then u have an american problem "oh cant drive other than my 2006 diesel pickup truck" etc. This car (also fossil ones) have almost zero consumption - 3.5L/100kmh, I drive one. I spend around 25€ for gas per month and drive around everyday. It really is a perfect city car. It really is fun when you get stuck in traffic - if you want to turn around, simply turn the wheel all the way and you don't even need to reverse or anything since it has small turning radius. Also parking head on in a parallel parking is another thing I love (tight spaces).

@@mark-se6ef I drive with Eco and don't go mad. I get around an 80 mile range (very hilly here) all year. The thing to note is that if you drive with the heating on it obviously knocks down the range. I can't tell you how much as it depends how long you have it on for and the heat setting. I rarely use the heater. The heated seats are great and I manage with just those, and it doesn't seem to affect the range.
I've had it for nearly two years . I still love the thing and wouldn't be without it.

You have the fully electric variant then?
I have this car (Premium spec, which is actually the lowest). It was the cheapest lease deal I could find at around £100/month. Very little maintenance fees and ‘fuel’ practically free. In 5 months I have done about 3000 miles and more than half of that I have been able to charge for free which is great. Charges fully in less than 40 minutes at a 22kW plug. This is now my sole vehicle and I have no issues with the range. People get too stuck up on convenience and effort, however you slice it this vehicle is one of, if not the most efficient EV on the market, in the lifetime of my this car I have averaged 190mpge. I have been on multiple 200+ mile round trips with my partner and dog! Stopping to charge let’s us explorer areas we would otherwise just drive past. I used to have a 4 door diesel with 5 seats, probably had people in the back 2% of the time, not worth it. You will be amazed at what you can fit in this car, the space design really is ‘Smart’!

Yes and it's the only one that actually looks like a car and not a quirky cartoon. Look at the i3 the older one looks awful same with the Nissan

I am considering a ForTwo EQ as a supplementary car to my Mercedes EQC 400. I live out in the sticks, so inevitably there are lots of short journeys since even the village store is over two miles away - a use-case I find that is often missed in urban-centric reviews of small EV’s. So the very small size is key to squeezing into the limited parking in the village and local shops, while the limited range is more than adequate for the intended journey profile - also the 22kWh AC charging is actually more useful locally than say a 50kWh DC capability since there are plenty of free 22kWh chargers at the shopping centre and pretty much we are talking 100% in the time to buy and drink a coffee. Miles per kWh on the Smart are a lot higher then the EQC so all good I feel 🙂

@@TotallyEV EQC is a great SUV with a sense of quality and presence. The electric drive train adds a feeling of smoothness and sophistication along with drivability and some serious oomph when needed. On the flip side it is a bit or a tank and certainly more at home on main roads and motorways than backroads and congested urban streets. Mercedes Me charge card works well and the 110kW charge rate is adequate as is the range now that motorway charging infrastructure has started to improve.

A perfect reason for getting one. The ForTwo is the ultimate for tight parking spaces but do try the ForFour as it is only a bit bigger and the added practicality makes it a fair bit more useful. The turning circle is not quite as tight but the ForFour rides better over country roads.
For local trips I guarantee you will take the Smart every tine!

The purchase price is certainly going in the right direction and compared to the recently deleted Renault Twizy at £12-13k it seems a good deal at around £17k. The range wouldn’t worry me, my longest journey would be 10 miles and the good performance is welcome.

Why not use a bike? You'd probably get there quicker too. Having this for the city AND being forced to have a longer range second vehicle for when going outside the city doesn't sound too green. Its so dumb they don't offer a hybrid option.
I realise you don't have much to compare it to in the UK, and most of the review was fair and really helpful (I didn't know you could charge it in 40 minutes to 80% on a 22KW - I just thought it was a 3 hour charge which makes stopping at motorway services a pain point). That's super useful. Two points I'd like to make though - about the range which is usable, but should be way better (nothing to do with the cars size btw) and the seats/boot space.
But I can't agree with the stance on 2 seat cars vs 4 seat cars. It's honestly not reasonable to compare the two and then say you should get the bigger one because it's more practical. It's not more practical for someone who needs a 2 seat car. A 2 slice toaster is absolutely fine. Unless you have a family who all want toast at the same time, in which case it can be worth getting a bigger one. But is it really worth it? The 4 slice genuinely isn't worth the upgrade for most people. It's a luxury we can and should do without. Also, if you only have 2 seats, you don't get asked to be the driver so often. Allegedly *coughs*. Boot space is also more than enough for any normal usage. I commented in detail below, but if you need more than a shopping trolley of shopping, get it delivered. This wasn't even an issue when I bought my first one, let alone now.
The range of the Baojun E200 (aka Wuling Nano EV) is 130 to 170 miles. It's shorter than the Smart, clearly inspired by it, and is 2 seats. It's $8,000 in China. It proves that Daimler don't know what they're doing. They could easily have made an electric Smart with a significantly higher range, they just chose not to. Either their batteries are bad, their motor is inefficient, or there's a lot of unused space as can happen if you take a petrol car, leave the transmission tunnel intact, and don't redesign it properly. It is clearly possible to produce a Smart, especially for that price, with a much greater range. It will also be easier year on year, as batteries improve. Unfortunately the Chinese manufacturers haven't reached the UK market yet with their small cars, and obviously there'd be some changes. Safety might have to go up (but that's a guess not a given fact - they make Teslas remember so it's not like they aren't making safe cars there) and we'd need right hand drive. Shouldn't be hard. I would expect the price (and their profit margin) to be greater and I'd happily pay for it.
Fingers crossed they bring it to us. Smart are now doing their 4 seat SUV abomination which is being made by Geely - another Chinese car company - and I've zero interest in that because it spits on the very idea of the Smart. However, I did find a comment from them (literally one sentence) that said they might do another 2 seat Smart in the future. If they did, it'll probably be awful because the SUV has a huge and useless bonnet for some reason and is over 4 metres long! However, we won't know what they might create until we see it and with any luck the other Chinese manufacturers will take their products worldwide. I don't think Elon will do us a short car, because he's been infected by the American compensating for something mind virus. ;) Much though I'd love a Smart form factor Tesla.

Ultimately, it depends on the use case, but at the time of the review, it didn't cost that much less than the VW and Seat alternatives, which both offered significantly more range and space; making it more practical for a lot of consumers - we understand that there are some that will want the smallest vehicles imaginable - and as such the Smart EQ is the only real option (other than something like the Citroen Ami).
It’s crazy to compare the Smart to a Boujun , the Smart has 6 airbags , abs , electronic stability control.It is built around a race car type steel cage.Even the seatbelts have been designed to reduce acceleration in an accident.Hasca 4 star Ncap rating.Any comparison to a cheap Chinese offering is ludicrous.
@@davidspendlove5900 so you're saying that some airbags, abs and electronic stability is worth over $12,000? Perhaps not. My point wasn't that the car was the same in every respect. It was that they managed to make it vastly better in the most important respects. Price and range. Mercedes by comparison, were unable to update the Smart to be cheaper for them to build, because they don't know how to build cars properly. They couldn't fit enough battery capacity in it to give it longer range, yet mysteriously, in the exact same car size, the Chinese have managed it. That's the Chinese that you seem to mock. Likely from a computer or smartphone made in China. We don't know what NCAP rating a Chinese car in the same form factor would get, because they haven't sent one.
Can Chinese engineers beat German engineers? Absolutely! They're definitely better at engineering, science, and maths. But Musk has proved that the most important thing is having the will to actually improve things. Which Mercedes never did. We can only hope Geely really will do a new 2 seater short Smart car, and will improve over the last ones in price, range, or features. All of which was possible ten years ago, but wasn't done.

Yes, it's hard to find a car to compare it to because until the Ami no-one tried to compete and that's not technically a car so it's not really fair to the Ami to compare it. You can't go from city to city in it, which is easy in Smart car. It is going to be great for the only in a city/town market or I suppose, people who are willing to stop for a long time very frequently if they want to go a longer distance. The big brother to the Ami might be interesting if it really goes into production but we'll have to wait and see.
Seven months later, the new incarnation is only just about to launch... but hasn't yet. No sign of the 2 seater though they've claimed there might be one. I think they're operating on ICE timescales so it'll be 2025 or something bonkers.

Such a shame that in the United States you can't park smart cars nose-in. It's biggest advantage over every other vehicle is mooted.

Recently sold the petrol Smart 4.2 which we loved very much but think the EQ is a great second car but for any long journeys life means carbon burning is still the lowest price option...need the electric cars to be lower priced to make a real change.

There is no competition for the EQ2. It is a unique cult vehicle. Yes, the range is low, but around town it is nippy and can get you out trouble in traffic. The residuals dont lie either. I love mine. You know you want one!

I looked at getting one of these for a whole year. In the end went for a Mini SE. The Smart just didn’t have the range. Fine now but in say 8 years when it’s lost 10 or 20 percent. Plus there was only one dealer in car range so only one choice for servicing and if they stopped then where! Plus old battery tech and constant rumours of ceasing production. In the end just too risky!

Smart with ice is a pretty perfect car for me. You actually can travel quite some distance and it's not too annoying. And in the city it's just awesome. It's fun to drive and no parking spot too small. Space also surprisingly large for that size. Honestly, this going electric only decision completely destroyed the car for me. I live in a city with no garage. Not so many chargers here and also I see it like that: So far there was no competition for small parking spots here. This was for me the USP of that car. Now, I have to find a parking spot with a charger and basically here I compete with big fat hybrid SUVs.

Since 6 years am I drinving smart cars. I am 197cm, fit perfectly well in that small car. Now after six years I keep my Brabus Smart but bought the EQ Version. I always had the same thoughts about the "range deficit". But why?! I live in a big city, travel daily around 50-60 k (max) so this is more than I need. If I travel elsewhere (makes probably 5% of annual driving time) I either choose the train or make use of car sharing. Hence I live perfectly well with that and never experienced any problems (so far). Only slight drawback is, that the infrastructure of charging stations is still rather low. But this will change rather quickly.

Do you know if it is possible to purchase a US version of the Smart EQ in Europe and have it exported to the US? I live in Palm Springs, California and Smart Fortwo is perfect for city driving. I just took possession of an almost identical smart EQ ForTwo about two weeks ago. The only differences are that mine doesn't have the leather seats and the matt grey metallic is a lighter color.
What can I say? First, it's my second smart EQ so I know a few things about the car. My previous one was a 2019 and I did 12K km with it. Yes, it's pricey and yes the range is limited. But I am one of those people who use it for the daily commute so I find it more than satisfactory, actually ideal. That's also thanks to the parkability. I have other cars for longer journeys so the smart EQ is ideal for my in-town needs.

Will you get 45/50 miles out of it in winter from a full charge using 30 and 40mph roads?
@@intothemultiverse1033 Quite honestly I don't know. I use the smart EQ for my daily city commute only, and the range should be about 100 miles under those conditions, winter included (I opted for the Winter Pack which has heated seats and steering wheel, as well as additional thermal insulation - that way you use less cabin heating).
That said, I keep the charge between 30-80% which is said to increase long-term battery life, meaning I recharge every 50 miles or so.

Of all cars on the road, the Smart EQ is probably the best car ever produced.
We need to praise the Designers who did a tremendous job.
Some of you may argue about it, but so far no other brand has managed to build a 2.70m long car that can reach 80mph with a usable boot.
It has a 5 star rating on the Euro NCAP crash test.
Nowadays there're few 2.50m long vehicles but they aren't cars but quadrycles which cannot reach the 80mph
Now the Smart EQ isn't cheap which is a pity.
Obviously if parking isn't an issue for you, then you might not see the point of such car and will not understand my "best car ever produced" at the beginning of my comment.
You can get loads in the boot. Can get 4 large bags of compost in easily. It's ideal if you are doing short journeys.

This. I never had any problems with the boot size of my Smart (petrol one). I could fit a full trolley of shopping, laden to the brim, in the boot space without even obscuring the window. I could fold the seat down and cart around a short bookcase from Ikea. Anything bigger can be delivered and probably should be anyway. I certainly don't know anyone who has to buy things bigger than that boot, on a regular enough basis to save any money or time at all, by picking them up themselves. Only commercial uses transport that much volume.
Complaining about the boot size is an hilarious thing that only car reviewers and people who suffer range anxiety seem to do - but in the real world, most trips are short, and most of the time you don't buy all that much at once. That's assuming you even bother going to the shops at all anymore.

I have the smart EQ 2020. Lovely car, but the app lets it down massively. I have never been able to use the app to charge at my cheaper rate times. The aftercare from smart is appalling.

Nice review! But if you do buy a Smart you know from the beginning that it is a city car so the limited range should not be a problem. We have 2 Smart (2014 and 2018) and they are the best cars that we have bougth!

There are a few differences, would suggest looking into the broshure or asking the dealer for the exact specs

I was on-track to upgrade my 2011 Smart 451 Passion for the Smart EQ until I discovered the satnav has been deleted on this EQ
That's something we chased Mercedes about; we only got the answer afterwards. Indeed, they've taken the built-in navigation away, as they've assumed most will use Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, frankly it's a good decision.
@@TotallyEV I dont agree and I'm certain other potential eq owners will agree by not buying. Smart are obviously avoiding the issue they had had for some years with their inadequate satnav system and I see this is repeated in their wider Mercedes range. Am now looking at Honda E and BMW's Mini neither of which have EQ's 2 seater quirky lovable design. What a shame!
Indeed, their decision won't appeal to everyone - it's just that most built-in navigation systems (including ones that are 'new/updated', such as the one from Tesla) are all not as accurate as one's phone.

The thing is at this electric cost with 17kWh battery, if you getting around 75 miles range means more than 5miles in 1kWh battery. That’s very economical. Now Tesla getting 2.8miles in 1kWh battery running cost is more than a petrol car which can get a 8mpl.

my 2006 cdi has traveled 220,000km only oil change as soon as the Chinese manage to insert a slightly larger battery that allows the smart to travel 200km will become a killer application
I'd definitely own one, but here, in brazil, this car may cost as the same as a T-cross or a Tiguan, what makes its price not competitive. What a shame...

Sadly I couldn't live with that pitiful range. I'm on my second Petrol Smart Car, and I go everywhere in it, travelling the length and breadth of the country. They are fantastic cars, capable of performing every duty, but that's only because the Petrol versions have a similar range to any other car. Making these with a tiny battery is frankly hopeless, and that will put off anyone who currently uses it as their main transport. It's a pity, because with 200miles of real world range and fast charging, it would easily replace the one I have now.
We have had a petrol for two and now a ForFour EQ. You are 100% correct that the EQ can never be a main / only car unless you never go very far. If you did take it on a long trip you would spend as much time charging as moving!
For us it's our local runabout and as a city car it's brilliant. The ForFour is only a bit longer than the ForTwo and we are glad we switched for the additional practicality and ride comfort. In terms of driving it is much better than the petrol versions in every way. Forget the 0-60 time, the 0-30 time is very good. With discounts, comparing like for like specs, it is also great value for an EV. It's quite comfortable and capable so if it did have a longer range we would definitely take it on longer trips
PS - other than range, the VW Up and variants have inferior specs
They are perfect for those who are commuting in the city. Which funnily enough, is what they are for... If you are traveling the length and breast of the country, then obviously you get a different car. It's like complaining about a raincoat you're swimming in.
Stephen you are right...up to a point i think though. I own a smart f2 petrol, i live in Athens, but have traveled everywhere in Greece and abroad with it. Already 430k km on the clock. It is definately a city car, however if you are aware of what you are driving, you can go everywhere. I love this tiny car. For people who their main territory is the city, but need to travel out of it from time to time (and are not able to have a 2nd car) the fortwo can do the job. However the fortwo ev is not unfortunately the car for these people :(
The lack of range is what put me off buying one in the end.

I picked the Smart as it’s just different. Some people hate them but you have to drive them to know how amazing they are in town! Parking is just AMAZING! Turning circle is the best in the business!
Good review but do you know about the Tridion Cell? It’s built basically round a Roll Cage essentially. I purchased mine June 2020 and didn’t get Apple CarPlay head unit which pissed me off actually for a car at £22.500 (I got for £16.000) as I refused to pay that for the range they offer, just went into dealer and said I want an edition 1, every price he said I was like no,no,no,no till I eventually got what I wanted to pay. They struggle to sell these cars and the range doesn’t help them out so salesman/ saleswoman know if they want to shift them they have to budge a lot on price, I was entitled to a charge unit via BP charge master and that’s 1 company that’s an absolute waste of space so demand to choose yourself and they foot the bill.

I bought a diesel more 10 years ago because of its size, I have a 70 plus mile daily commute, sadly, as much as I like the look of the latest Smart, 70 miles, around a £20000 price tag, I'm afraid that unless they can improve the range considerably, for me, it's not worth the money, size wise, I've got no issues with that

@@TotallyEV I have looked at other electric vehicles, but for where I live, the Smart is the perfect size, it doesn't get damaged when parked, it's big enough for my needs, I probably only carry passengers maybe the equivalent of a week or so in a year, my car has covered many miles, well above average.
I probably wouldn't be able to get a home chargepoint as I have a shared driveway with public right of way by foot, I would probably have to rely on public charging, sadly the infrastructure in the area is pretty much non existent, two chargepoints in an expensive car park which closes at night, my employer wouldn't put electric chargepoints in the car park due to cost, the local car park uses Ionity so 69p per kWh, £3.50 per hour parking fees, even if I got home in time to use the car park my diesel is cheaper to run than electric, there's 2 chargepoints around 5 miles further away from my work so going in the wrong direction, one in Lidl and one in Asda, but they're in the wrong direction, how much they charge I don't know.
One other off-putting thing with electric vehicles is the charging, using a public charging point it's quite complicated, I don't have a smartphone, when buying diesel, I always pay cash, I only recently got a debit card, apart from my national insurance card, digital tachograph, driving licence and CPC card, oh and donor card, I don't really want to carry loads of cards, I don't understand smartphones, phones are for making phone calls, but for an older person such as myself, it's not made easy, I have no one to show me.
Not to be negative, I really would like to be more environmentally friendly, I would like to have an electric vehicle, the Smart is a lovely car, in every way except range, it's ideal, I'm not bothered by technology, I don't understand it all, the Seat/VW and Fiat are both nice vehicles (I've also owned an early proper Fiat 500 in my past), most of the technology I will never need or use, they're also very much bigger, as I wouldn't actually be buying new as my budget doesn't stretch that far, what's on offer that's semi affordable is either too large or too small a range
All very valid points, and issues many have when it comes to electric cars - let alone the range and charging times for some individuals.
Hopefully that'll change come few years time, where even in your area there will be an abundance of charging points available to you. Fingers crossed!

@@TotallyEV I love electric cars but when EVs do not compete with petrol in range, acceleration or pricing, there is no reasonable motive to switch. This car is for middle class semi eco conscious hippies who want to be seen driving an EV, the target audience is way too small and this car is just another reason smart will unfortunately go bankrupt in the next few years.
Guess that remains to be seen! As for the price, yes they do need to come down and compete with ICE cars, but there are cost savings and benefits to owning an EV that are worth considering.
My 2002 fiesta is smaller then that car, and it can fit 3 more people and can put a weeks worth of shopping in the boot o.o

@@IRLSuperb there’s not a lot of Koenigsegg cars out there, Smarts are everywhere, behind every corner and it’s made from cheap materials, some of the parts in interior are taken from Renault. No wonder if there’s a Renault parts under the hood as well. It’s not a expensive car to manufacture, it’s overpriced just because it unique (not anymore) and there’s Daimler behind it. That’s it.

It looks like the a fiat , they couldn't come up with a better design. The older smart cars looked better. Sometimes I truly wonder if these new car designers actually use there own imagination or create these cars or just let the computers do everything and they never seem to check older models of cars in history. Tottaly unreal. Fiat is a failing design and was very ugly. Don't even know if fiat even makes cars today
The 500e is the best small sized EV on the market and one of the most popular small vehicles in the world...! Most, including us, would say the fiat is among one of the most stylish. Guess it's all subjective!

Rear parking camera... what!!! On a vehicle this small the height of useless infantile design, if you can't reverse park this little toy just by looking over you shoulder you should not be on the road. Every day the film Idiocracy becomes more like a documentary.
