His PC keeps shutting down... here is why

  • It is INCREDIBLY important to keep your PC clean. Dust build up is the leading cause to PC death. Dust can become conductive which can lead to bigger issues. KEEP YOUR PC CLEAN! In this video it is suspected that the dust may have been causing the internal circuit protection in the PSU to fault which is why it would randomly shut off, and in my case, wouldn't turn on at all.
    Check out the duster that I used in this video on Amazon - amzn.to/2dJPxnV

      Back almost 18 years ago I used to hang out at a Computer Renaissance looking at the stuff they'd get in and see if anything looked interesting. Once I was looking at the rigs they'd had in for repair or diagnosis, and saw one where power supply and everything else was caked in that brown gunk... First time I ever saw that and it was disgusting. The shop refused to do anything about it either -- basically said the hourly cost of trying to clean all of that out and ensure it would run was going to exceed the value of the machine.

    As long as you have dust filters and keep a positive pressure inside of your case, dust isn't really much of an issue. My computer has been running for years and all I ever have to clean is my dust filter. All computers should have dust filters. I don't understand why it's not a standard feature nowadays.

    My brother Rob who built several PCs for me has always instructed me to keep the inside of my computer clean but didn’t follow his advice. I never considered dust a serious threat until today when I realized thanks to your video (and my brothers urging to look inside the machine) that it’s the reason it has been shutting down every 30 minutes or so. I have needed to reset the power switch every time. Thoroughly cleaning it inside and out, pretty sure that’s going to fix the problem. It was shutting down when the CPU hit more than 80°C.

  • @mygetrichslowplan
    @mygetrichslowplan 7 років тому +305

    You sort of mentioned it, although not explicitly, but this computer was this filthy because the owner is a smoker. I've cleaned out a lot of used computers and computers for family and friends, and this PC had two strong indicators that it lived with a smoker: A) The dust on the radiator was clearly a brownish color, not grey, and B) The yellowing on that white 200mm fan. I wouldn't be surprised to find out this PC reeked of cigarette smoke.
    I'm not one to judge people for smoking, that's their business, but it does go to show that PC owners who smoke need to take extra care if they want to protect the longevity of their PCs.

    • @Jayztwocents

    • @mygetrichslowplan
      @mygetrichslowplan 7 років тому +23

      JayzTwoCents Really, hmmm, in that case I stand corrected. I've seen incredibly similar symptoms in smoker's computers, but never in a non smoker's. I guess you learn something new every day.

    • @mygetrichslowplan
      @mygetrichslowplan 7 років тому +1

      Cameron Shelgren Yes, but dog hair doesn't cause yellow/brown gunk to build up on fans and radiators and turn white fans yellow. Those are typically seen in smoke damaged electronics. Jay has stated this man is not a smoker, so I'm not sure what caused that.

    • @cmusic52
      @cmusic52 7 років тому +2

      another possible cause is if the PC was on carpet and say the dog had an accident near it, that can also have an effect on the color of the dust or if its near a washroom and he works around a lot of topsoil that's very dark

      JayzTwoCents Hi!
      I need some help, my CPU seems to be overheating. It will be in the 40/50c area when web browsing. I know I need new thermal paste because not to long ago it got in the 90 area and I pushed the fan down to keep the CPU cool and now it's fine. I have stock fan. My computer, i5-4590, msi r9 380, 8 gb ram. I also want to ask if I need 3 fans. I have 2 outtake ones and that's it. I would of put at least one intake fan but I only have 2 fan headers. Also when I play something like over watch it goes in the 60s.
      Thanks in advance!

    *I'd like to see a video regarding optimising settings for consistent performance in games*
    PC gaming is great, but the one annoying thing is not knowing what is causing fps dips or performance issues when a game moves from one area to the next. Consoles are always consistent, the nature of PC games allows you to have better performance at the start of a game than at the middle or end of a game, even a built in benchmark is not accurate for what your settings should be.

Common sense told me to try it since Id noticed how much dust is created in this room we have now been in for over a year. Mine starts with shutting down when I start my game of choice, The Sims 4, so when you mentioned the game, I knew this was the video to watch.

    Hopefully it was just dust that was messing with your power supply, but if the problem comes back, it could be the caps are drifting out of range.

    I totally agree. Dirt in your computer clogs up the cooling and fries the bits inside. Again if the devices trip the heat sensors when they are hot and close down either just off or via slow down. Another thing is the computer can get from cold to hot in use, then hot to cold when you switch off. This thermal cycling can stress solder joints and after a few years crack the solder like a dry solder job. Then you get a dead part. People who use a PC in their bedroom beware the PC just vacuums all the dust and fills up, just clean out more often. NB (take note) this applies to laptops too and usually causes slow down. Another silly thing is using the laptop when in bed as the cooling air intake is often on the bottom of the laptop. That laptop is sat on the top of the bed and the air intake is blocked by the bedclothes. Use a plastic breadboard under the laptop to allow a gap for cooling air intake. Just sit the laptop on top of the breadboard while watching the movie.

    That's why I loved the demciflex filter set I brought for my cooler master haf 932 advanced case, I literally just opened it up every 6 months and apart from a slight layer of dust that built up at the bottom of the case all the components were clear. So many people moaned about the price of demciflex filters but as the saying goes, you get what you pay for & those demciflex filters were superb & worth the money & fitting them hardly changed temps of components inside the case.
    Was a sad day to see that case go but I needed a smaller one that I could fit on the new desk I got so I'm now using the cooler master H500M which has filters, I'll see how well they work compared to the demciflex I was using on the old case.

    I'd rather see you pull the dust off the radiator, etc., with a vac rather than blowing it into fins and crevices.
    When vacuuming, use a flashlight and go slow, using your fingertips to shield the tip of the crevice nozzle
    from direct contact with your equipment.

    • @ashtonmark24
      @ashtonmark24 7 років тому +5

      HighsNBurgers I agree. I'd vacuum the worst of the stuff off first. Then probably unscrew the rad and blow it through so I don't contaminate the rest of the case. IMO if you just use the air can you're just blowing dust around and into the nooks and crannies! That air duster looked pretty neat through...

    • @lbrwnie
      @lbrwnie 7 років тому +9

      Vacuuming is a VERY bad idea, it can build up static around components and potentially shock them.

    • @ashtonmark24
      @ashtonmark24 7 років тому +2

      Yes, a vacuum can generate static but I've never had a problem (I have literally just cleaned mine again and surprise surprise it is still working!), I use it with the brush attachment and NOT directly onto components, more for inside the case/backplates/PSU/fans etc to get the worst off (I use air can to loosen dirt on mobo and sensitive stuff and blow it at the vacuum nozzle, thus catching the dust rather than distributing it throughout the case). You could argue it's just as bad to be spraying moisture and chemicals onto your mobo with an air can or blasting dust further into the cracks with with an air duster...

    A few things you should do if your PC is having issues:
    - Make sure your Graphics card drivers are up to date
    - Make sure you didn't accidently messup something while in the Bios
    - If you have previously installed a component, put that as the #1 reason (possibly)
    - If you recently installed a new GPU or CPU, check online to make sure you're in the safe zone for wattage, since there will be problems if the wattage goes over.
    - Check all connectors to see if they're loose
    - And as this video shows, CLEAN YOUR DAMN PC!

    I've got the same issue. I'm going through a process of elimination. Put everything into a new Phanteks case which has better ventilation. Restarts. New Arctic Freezer 13 heatsink. Restarts. Went into BIOS and disabled CPU fan fail alert, because I read that some motherboards think that semi-passive heatsink/fans have failed. Restarts. Upgraded PSU to Aerocool 750w 80 + bronze. Restarts. Thought it might be the old 1tb mechanical hard drive, which makes a single click when it's instructed to do some work. Installed Unigene valley benchmark on the main SSD and ran it. Restart. So...I'm left with the RAM (16 GB DDR4) being the issue, or the Graphics Card (Sapphire RX 480 4GB) being the issue. Ran Windows 10 Memory test, and no issues were found. I'll try taking the RAM out and running with just 1x 8GB. But it like it's the graphics card. New thermal paste needed perhaps, or a new graphics card :/ I can test the system with an old Geforce 460 768mb :)

    this video makes me laugh because this was a issue for me for about a year prior till now, i pawned my PC for awhile because of some life circumstances and eventually got it back. it was fine after a while then this started happening the random restarts. i didnt pay it any mind because it wasnt that often. then it started to happen a lot then eventually became a problem to the point i bought a PS4 because i was scared to open up my PC because i bought it pre built and i was still new to the PC world. then a few days ago i was desperate to use my PC so up until then i watched a shit ton of your vids and a few others and grew some balls and Dissembled my PC fully cleaned each piece even remounting my CPU and assembling my PC back together and i felt some Comfortable while doing the whole process it was like i was even worried if it was going to turn on or not after i put it back together because of how desperate i was to use my PC again, and now it works perfectly fine and i love it because i can actually say i put my PC together because i did and fixed the problem... THANK YOU SO MUCH BTW i typed this message off my PC! XD and subbed right before posting this! THANKS AGAIN BRO

    The best reason to get a desktop case with a clear plastic/glass panel is to see dust build up, but I cleam mine every month anyway so not a drama. I also find that after about a year I reseat the cpu cooler with new thermal paste.

    I remember you had that problem with the FX8320 with the 1070. Thankfully, I haven't had that problem with my system even though I have an i7-4770k CPU oc to 4.4 GHz with 16 gb ddr3 ram at 2400 MHz, and a PNY Nvidia GTX 1080 graphics card.

    I bought a Cyberpower computer from Best Buy, and I experienced a "go to black screen" fan revs, had to turn it off. Finally, I turned it on, and before it even went to the Bios, it gave me a warning "Your PCIe graphics card is not connected". So I took the cover off, pushed it in, and haven't had a problem since.

    Yeah, I know this 2 yrs old, but;
    GREAT video, I appreciate this 1 Jay.
    More please.
    BTW, any ideas on why my old box keeps on on freezing?
    I've changed the PSU, checked RAM, made sure it's clean, but it randomly freezes & I have to reset to get out. Cntrl + Alt + Dlt doesn't do anything, which makes me think it's hardware. Lightning came in on the cable & took out the integrated network interface so I replaced the mobo & an ethernet cable, since then the graphics card died & was replaced, the PSU was changed, RAM was added & moved around but mem86 showed some bad RAM which is being RMAed. Any ideas?
    Thanks all.
    Have a GREAT day, Neighbors!

    I would've ran a Memtest or some other RAM test as well, since I've seen quite a few sticks get ruined over the years due to sudden shutdowns and crashes and the like.

    Is it okay that I have to kickstart one of my case fans when I turn on the computer? It does not start spinning on its own, but when I bump the tower, it winds up and works great.

    I had an old pc that would reset now and then. When I inspected it the power supply fan vent was totally blocked with dust. So stripped down whole pc and cleaned it out. Worked great afterwards.
