- Iconic 1.66:1 aspect ratio cheat sheet with the correct resolutions for most standard frame sizes, including 720p, 1080p, 4K UHD and all the way up to 8K.
Also known as the 5:3 ratio or "European widescreen", the 1.66:1 aspect ratio emerged in the early 1950's as European cinema's response to the widescreen revolution of the era. It offered a compromise between the traditional Academy ratio (1.37:1) and wider formats like CinemaScope (2.35:1).
The aspect ratio was embraced by the likes of Bergman, Truffaut and Fellini, and became synonymous with the golden age of European cinema, symbolizing artistic innovation, cultural identity, and cinematic excellence.
The first three Bond films were shot in 1.66:1. As were other classics including On the Waterfront (1954), A Clockwork Orange (1971) and New York, New York (1977).
Although digital technology has, in many ways, made traditional film formats obsolete, the 1.66:1 aspect ratio has found an enduring appeal. Filmmakers still occasionally employ it to evoke nostalgia or artistic authenticity.
Contemporary films such as Blue Valentine (2010), Jackie (2016) have taken advantage of the attractive balance between width and height offered by the 1.66:1 ratio.
Just be aware that this aspect ratio has actually been abbreviated to 1.66. It is in fact a 5:3 ratio. So, to resize your videos to this aspect ratio accurately, multiply your source footage height by 1.666666. The result will be the required width.
For example, if your original footage is 4K UHD (3820x2160), multiplying 2160 by 1.666666 gives us 3600 (when rounded) and a 4K UHD resolution (in 1.66:1 aspect ratio) of 3600x2160.
To make things a little easier, here are the most common 1.66:1 resolutions:
8K = 7680x4608
8K UHD = 7200x4320
6K = 5760x3456
5K = 4800x2880
4K = 3840x2304
4K UHD = 3600x2160
3K = 2880x1728
3K UHD = 2700x1620
2K = 1920x1152
Full HD 1080p = 1800x1080
HD 720p = 1200x720

Thanks! I find these very helpful to keep on hand when I want to play around with the looks of things. Sometimes it’s difficult to get the actual resolutions for having the actual exported video be that aspect ratio and not just have black bars in a 1.78:1 frame.
Some future suggestions for this playlist:
1.43:1 (IMAX)
1.37:1 (Academy Ratio)
1.33:1 (4:3)
1.19:1 (Rarely used e.g.
“The Lighthouse,” “Vampyr”)
1:1
1:1.78 (Vertical Cellphone Aspect Ratio)
Thanks for the feedback and suggestions! Much appreciated.
Apparently my tablet is in 5:3? Weird.
My cousin's samsung tablet is like that
