It's refreshing to hear Linus say "speaking of..." without it immediately being following by an ad for a sponsor.
yep
2021 said hi
I was expecting the ad for the sponsor and when it didn't came, I had the same feeling! hahaha
i purchased a 27-ich 144hz monitor, its stunning when the games actually support 144fps in 1080p.
I used to have a 50-something inch CRT television. Expensive as hell when my family bought it when I was a kid, but it served us well into the LED era. It stood proud beside two plasma TVs and tons of LED monitors.
This guy sounds like a tech genius. He should start his own youtube channel
Seen a twitter post of a guy excited that he got a 4K monitor for his Xbox One LOLOLOL
***** Pretty sure he was 100% serious lol
Yep... Check out @ProSyndicate... so sad... :/
He got it for free
He'
Yes. I agree.. Poor ignorant fool that xbone owner is.
That's like owning a old 1960's volkswagon beetle and trying to enjoy it on the autobahn in germany. ( facepalm).
Very informative! A warp speed overview of various resolutions and terminology. Nicely done!
I clicked on this vid asking myself if I understood this the right way.
7minutes and 40seconds later I found out I did. Thanks for the info!
Watched this video in 2018 and it still holds up. Awesome content my guy!
Lmao i heard "contrast ratio" on a LTT video and searched to see what that is and there he is again in the search results explaining it 😂
lol watching this video at 0.5 speed at around 20-30 seconds is the best
even better whne hes talking about 4k
Lol...sounds like he's been hitting "the Sauce".
lol
lol
lol
linus please cover color ratio!!! i always hear about monitors that have color ratios of 10,000,000 to 1 or 20,000,000 to 1 etc but what does it really mean.
Maybe Tech Quickie ?
Assuming you do in fact mean contrast ratio it has a flawed manner of being measured so I wouldn't worry too much about the number. I'd recommend to always look at the display in person before buying when possible or at least read a ton of reviews. Probably a good idea anyway because rating systems for monitor specs kinda suck in general, and don't really give you any idea of how the display will actually look.
"they just make up whatever they want" "there is no regulated measurement" - HH Greg Salsemen who went to a class on it.
contrast ratio is usually 1000/1 to 3000/1 the higher the better for blacks and thats native ratio, when see a silly number like 20,000,000/1 thats dynamic ratio which is basically a made up number to make it seem better when in fact 1000/1 is quite good.
1080P144Hz master race.
I would like one of those 21:9 monitors though.
What about 2.5k? It's in the description but you never mentioned it in the video.
Looking for some advice on 4k gaming. Looking to buy a gtx 1080 and a 4k monitor, however as not all games will run amazing at 4k I may have to runs some/most at 1440p maxed out, but I've heard due to interpolation, 1440p can look blurry on a 4k display. Is this really noticable or will it still look miles better than 1080p?
So what is the point of cellphones with full HD or 4k display with less than 6 inch screen ?
marketing
I'm watching this in 2024, 9 years later and still got useful information. And using an old LG TV at 720p while watching Linus talking about 4K resolutions in the future... 🤡I'm so far behind...
im thinking of buying a 23 - 24 inch IPS monitor. whats the best resolution for them?
i think the sweet spot is 1080p... am i right?
hi i have a question. If I have a video file on my computer that’s 1920x1080, that’s 1920x1080 unique pixels forming the image I see in the video. So when I lower my screen resolution and the video is downsampled, does the video in reality still maintain the 1920x1080 pixels, but the display just makes it appear like it’s a lower resolution?
Great video and I have a question about this. I'm looking at 2 different digital picture frames. One has a XGA display while the other is IPS (they also called it FHD on the description). Which would you recommend that I should buy? Thank you.
Is 27" monitor with full hd 1920x1080 bad for gaming? I have to choose 23" 1920x1080 250 brightness and 27" 1920x1080 300 brightness. Which one should I get? For gaming
I love 16:10 and 21:9 but I can't stand 16:9 for some reason
Bro I got a confusion.. plz help
1440 * 3120
1920 * 1080
Which one is the better/ high quality screen display? If anyone know please tell me.. 😀 Thanks.😂
Can’t believe this was six years ago

One question I cannot find anyone mentioning, but I'm really interested to know. Is text on a 4K monitor with its downscaling features clearer/nicer to read than on a let's say QHD without downscaling? Or it depends on screen size, downscaling percentage, etc. Cause I'm a developer and I'm thinking about buying a 4K (or UHD to be precise) monitor, but since I'm 90% of the time looking at text, I'm thinking if it makes sense to spend money on a 27" 4K if the text is clearer on 27" or 34" (W)QHD. Since a 27 4K" is basically the same price as a 34" WQHD.
Linus mentions we should see "fine, larger" text on a 4K downscaled, so does that mean that it is still nicer than a lower res monitor without downscaling?
Hey can you do tech tips on 4K TV and monitor. I want to buy one but I keep hearing it does not output 4K content unless it has HDMI 2.0, 10bit video chip, HDCP 2.2 and HEVC. Can you explain what that mean?
ok, my tv says it's vertical resolution is 2160p (4k), I have it hooked up to my computer using an hdmi cable to a video card (geforce gt630) which shows the maximum digital resolution to be 2560x1600 .... My display shows in the resolution window to be 1920 x 1080 (recommended) .... ???? It won't go any higher. How can i fix it to go higher ?
So all I do is music production and I'm looking for work space I currently have to 19 in 4 to 3 ratio monitors next to each other. Would a 32 inch 16 to 9 ratio monitor give me the same the less or more work space? Additionally is a 2560 x 1440 the same exact workspace is a 1920x1080 monitor but just more resolution?
So, what happens if I run a 5:3 Aspect Ratio GTA V on a 16:9 AR fullHD screen, using 1920x1080 as game's resolution?
I see the game wider, so cars feel longer and wider. I like it. But does it ruins the quality or hits performance?
+RoyalPredator nope
Anthony Brouwers What's your explanation? :)
It just scales the picture.
This is really informative. Thanks so much for making the video.
what if you have a tripple monitor setup? will it still be 16:9 or larger?
What size do you recomend for a 2560x1080 computer monitor
pixel density, ips vs tn, dvi vs displayport vs vga vs hdmi, viewing angle differences, response rates vs refresh frequencies... this little series can cover quite a few topics.
Great vid, thanks Linus. i was looking to upgrade to a 29'' for my center eyefinity display but i want to match the height. Oh and thanks for clarifying the windows scaling issues with 4k.
I was not waiting for this video but it is great to see this kind of information Linus so BIG + for me. I was looking for a new screen and I could not choose the right one for me. I`m a gamer but I also love great image quality like you see with the IPS screens.
Hard choise :P
LinusTechTips Why didn`t you talk about the different screens you have on the market (TN panel or IPS) ????
Here's a question. If you go out and buy a 4k monitor for your computer, should there be any concern about your graphics card being able to support it? Is there a chance it won't work or maybe it will create a bottle neck? Thanks.
even integrated graphics support 4k stills and video playback just don't expect to play games or edit videos at 4k with it
Henry Montero Oh okay. Thanks so much Henry.
jrjubach anytime
So....graphics cards only affect games, not display resolution as in when I'm editing or watching UA-cam videos?
i have an old crt that will do 1920x1440, should it be called 1440p? the answer is no, and the whole naming model of 1080p and 720p is worthless in the first place.
is it smart to play 1080 on a ultra wide monitor? I really want that extra vision but my pc can't handle 4k
0:36
*_FINALLY_* someone gets it right!
4K is *NOT* 4 times the resolution of 1080p, it's *TWO* times the resolution of 1080p.
Yeh. My friend didn't believe me on this. Yet I knew how it was calculated all wrong.
Already using 1440p for a little over a year and was glad to make the swap. My next monitor will probably be a UHD or 4k depending what comes out next year.
Glad they sorted the awful things they did to help reduce the echo in previous videos in post. Linus without those things done to him but with the echo sounds much better. Try getting some acoustic foam on the ceiling to help it and it will sound so much better
What portion of youtube viewers view in 4k? Are there stats on this?
Would be interested to see a breakdown 4k, 1440, HD, Lower than HD / mobile.
linus or someone please explain.what confuses me is that how is the same resolution maintained on different sized screens such as a 22 inch 1080 and and 24 inch 1080 because they both must have the same amount of pixels by length and width right? so does the pixel size change for each screen size?
this is the question I have been asking for ages. From my understanding, the pixel size stays the same, but they are just more tightly packed in the smaller display, reducing the space in between each pixel. but this still blows my mind because that means on a super large 1080p display, that means we are looking at mostly empty/black space.
I have changed my monitor...
I bought a new monitor....resolution i see is not right....its awkward...
Does the vga cable affects..resolution
Bring back 16:10!
lol
I'm still using a 16:10 monitor
16:10 is spot on. Bought an ASUS PA248Q 24", couple of months go.
Nah....
i'm thinking of purchasing a 16:10 monitor, is it good for gaming? (im no pro gamer btw)
So from the best that I could understand, higher resolution AND aspect ratio = good? because it seems like if some are higher or lower then regardless of the product the picture might look wonky or something?
When I apply 800x600 resolution its not fit and super low graphics.
WHAT'S THE PROBLEM PLEASE REPLY ME???😭😖😫😭
These videos are really good and educational
I want to ask you 😚
if i buy widescreen monitor 2560*1080 25inch
Can i reduce the resolution in games withot lose Aspects of the screen (black sides)
Because i have low gpu (vega 11)
And in games i should reduce resolution like in 1920*1080 monitor i put the resolution to 720*1280
In wide screen can i do it without lose sides in left and right???
And thank you for your videos🥰
You have always answered what I wonder about !!
I was hoping for more technical desc for types of monitor types such as contrast ratio, response time or pixel pitch.
I am still stuck because english is not my native language. So if i want to get more space to administrate my UI and see more enviroment (at the same time) in videogames like WoW what aspect ratio and resolution should I need? I guessed to buy a 21:9 aspect ratio monitor, but now I am actually confused. Could i get more space in a 4k monitor than a 21:9 ? I dont want to see all around me bigger. I want to see more and get more space. The same for Windows (possiblity to divide the monitor in more screens)
someone help plz i have a cyber power pc and has gtx 970 with a amd 8320 processor and im trying to put the resolution to 1920x1080 on my hp 23 inch monitor and it doesnt let me change it to 1920x1080 it just stays at 800x600 plz help thanks
so what would you look at if you were trying to see more when muilti tasking on a computer, i need to have 2 to 3 windows open seemly at once. I guess more so resolution then display size.
Linus, how do the new 4k tv's stack up? i.e. the Samsung UE50HU6900S or LG 42UB820V. This might sound silly but the 1080p resolution + latency has always been 2 main reasons to go for a monitor to go along with the pc but 4k partially solving the problem what about a 4k tv as a monitor replacement? Ive seen the 42inch LG upclose and i must say the pixeldensity is amazing and its perfectly fine to sit close to it, being 650€ and an IPS panel its a pretty good deal. not the mention the smart tv functionality(upscaling/mediacenter etc)
plz compare reading pdf experience in different resolution laptop.i want to buy laptop with gooding reading experience pdf.will 4k be ok.i have no limitation on budget
Does a 720p video look worse on a 1080p than a 720p screen (both screens are the same size, say 23 inch)? Or will it just look the same?
Some people say it will look worse because of the video being stretched on 1080p screen.
However, I've been thinking as the individual pixels on the 720p screen are LARGER than those on a 1080p screen anyway, the 720p video would look just the same on both screens.
Then why a PSone game looks so much worse on modern screens? Then I thought we used to play it on CRTs which are usually small.
So help me people. Peace.
Great question. I, too, tell people to buy a 720p monitor/TV if they want to ONLY output 720p. To my understanding, I think that since 1080p is not double 720p (or divisable by 720p), there will be approximations. Like instead of a straight line being straight, the fact that the pixels on the 1080p are not in the same places as the 720p panel, it would make straight lines SLIGHTLY jagged. Maybe I am wrong, but that is my understanding. I'd like a FAP (ha) on that one as well.
720p on a 1080p screen will look worse. That's why monitors have their native resolutions, that's what they're meant to be used at. I've tried it in the past, and to describe how it looks, it's blurry compared to a native 720p monitor, if both were around 21" - 23".
Dylan Carr Just as a side tip, 1080p is more than double of 720p. UHD is four times as much as 1080p.
arasinais1997 Yes, 1080p has more than double the AMOUNT of pixels, but it does not have more than double the amount of horizontal/vertical pixels, which was what I was getting at. For example, If viewing 720p content on a 1440p monitor, it would look as if it was natively 720p. Why? Because 1440p has exactly twice the amount of horizontal/vertical pixels. When in a situation such as this one, the 1440p panel would have 4 pixels (a 2x2 block) in every spot a 720p panel would have only 1 pixel. This would prevent any previously discussed jagged edges and such from not using the native resolution of the monitor. Because 720p is divisable into 1440p, it still seems as if it was native. I hope you understand what I am getting at, and this further explains why I think that native resolution (or half of that) is the only way to use a monitor. Thanks for your input and for not being a troll, such as calling me a dumb ass or something simply because of the dissonance in communication. :)
Dylan Carr Pixels don't work that way, because not all content displayed on a screen is in 2D. When in 3D applications, we get polygons, which debunks the 1 for 4 pixels in a 1440p display running at 720p.
What are the best 4k or 21:9 gaming monitors, I really like the lg curved 21:9 ?
What kind of GPU/CPU would be needed for gaming while having a 2560 x 1440 resolution for the monitor? I'm thinking of getting a 2560 x 1440 monitor to help when I'm drawing on the computer, though I'd like to play games at a comfortable frame rate too.
the gtx 970 is not a bad card to look at.
Nononon wait for 1070
+bobo ulrich not all of us live in America or Canada .....some of us live in Asia and philipines...they are 3x the price....a gtx 970 cost as much as 980ti price is US
if your going for cost savings, the gtx 970 will do, but i would recommend the gtx1060, it runs slightly better than a gtx980 with a lower cost
Nice video
***** One thing that is still unclear to me is: Will a windows 1080 resolution setting on a 15" 4k display look the same or as good in terms of image quality and desktop real estate as a 1080 resolution setting on a 15" 1080 display?
Can anyone help me? I recently bought a new gaming monitor 244hz, and can be overclocked to 280hz. However the native resolution of this monitor is 1920 x 1080. For a certain game that I play, I like to change my resolution to 1280 x 960. This causes issues when Alt Tabbing between full screen games. Should I just get use to playing the game at the native resolution or should I able to play at whichever resolution I prefer? appreciate if anyone can give some advice, no matter how many videos I watch on this stuff, it is still so confusing.
here i am thinking should i get 1920*1080p res 24inch or 22inch.. . . i come from 1366*768 res on 19 inch monitor, which i hate cause i can see pixels, it's not sharp viewing experience. that's why i was wondering if 1920*1080p resolution will also be less sharp on a 24inch monitor. can anyone give feedback? i also do digital art so 24inch is the sweet spot for me considering the cost.
if i am watching a youtube video at 720p on a 720p display but the video only occupies half of my screen am i still watching at 720p
Guys does the CPU/GPU act as a bottleneck when it comes to display resolution. If your CPU/GPU can't feed images at the specified monitor resolution/refresh rate, how does it affect performance. Also, how to choose a CPU/GPU for a specific Monitor resolution/refresh rate. Kindly correct my question if needed.
Thanks in advance.
So, yeah. For PC I still prefer 1080p.
I use 1200p, I love it
For me as long as the pixel density is at least 90-100 it's fine. So my 1080p 24" is sorta on the low end of what I'm ok with but really it's much sharper than a 4k 60" ridiculous expensive tv but that's not really fair, I know.
ThatYellowPokemon Me too! I use a Apple Cinema Display from 2003! It has a 1920x1200 resolution a 500:1 contrast ratio. Yea, it is sweet!
Joshua's Recordings Going for 21:9 next upgrade though.
3 years later... I'm here to reply lol
Hey, Is it possible to dual a 4K and 1080 screen
Yes
16:10 aspect ratio is ideal for productivity, and doesn't sacrifice anything for media consumption as well.
The annotation for the QR code didn't work for me... Took a screenshot of it and stuck it into Web QR.
Just ordered 1440p monitor after using a 1920x1200 TN panel for years cant wait to see how much better PLS is.
can any one help to get information about, if i connect lg 25inch ultra wide moniter using dp port to hdmi converter what will happen does it support same resulation actually i dont have hdmi connection to my desktop so i wanna connect to my graphic card
why does nobody use the most important parameter - pixel density! this is what we care about, not how many pixels we have on two acres of a screen...
Is it possible to change the screen resolution from 2k down to HD to enlarge the icons and letters?
I still don't get it, (videogames) i can see in one image more things on an ultrawide monitor than on a big size 4k tv ?
Is 3840 x 2160 UHD for 15.6-inch laptop recommended? will it affect the text and such?
You can use scaling because if not, the text is gonna look microscopic.
its not really necessary, with a 15.6 inch screen 1080p will be sharp enough that your eyes won't see any pixels, and also it has good screen real-estate. having the 4k will just drain battery on the laptop, i wouldn't recommend it
hey guys please answer my question?
does ps4 support 21:9 aspect ratio?
1440p should really be considered 2.5K. 2K makes more sense for 1080p which has horizontal pixels very close to 2K and what we consider 4K is further from its actually number than 1080p to 2K
Fixing what we name the standardized resolutions is a problem the world is not yet ready to handle.
Does 16:9 means per every 16 pix horizontal there are 9 pix vertical?
What about contrast ratio? IPS vs LCD? Refresh rate? MIssing a lot of information necessary to make a decision about buying a monitor.
depoch what?Lcd is the back light.
Great video Liuns! I want a 4k-display so bad :D
I recently bought a 21:9 monitor and I'm having trouble finding content that supports it. Where or how can I watch movies in 21:9 without black bars?
7:3 *
Jesse Janitscheck
This isn't math class. Pretty sure it's called 21:9
The bay frequented by pirates
Jesse Janitscheck While 7:3 makes sense mathematically, that makes it inconvenient when discussing aspect ratio, hence why it is known as 21:9. When someone hears 21:9 they think "Oh it's like a wider 16:9"
Any videos on other screen specs like the angle before all contrast is lost when not looking directly at a screen, color depth, pixel density, and refresh rates?
can some1 explain
how my phones resolution is 1920 1080p
and my monitor which size is too big than my smartphone have same resolution
my pc have more pixels by size
stupid question but ans
your monitor does not have more pixels just because it's a bigger screen
If they're both 1920x1080p then they will both have the same amount of pixels, however, since the monitor has the larger screen the individual pixels will be larger
Soooooo is a 300:1 Full HD monitor better or a 100:1 Full HD monitor?
The laptop I'm getting uhh. The screen resolution is 1366x768pixels even well the aspect ratio is 16:9 does that mean I can play on 1920x1080?
+Tyler Jones You will not be able to play on 1920x1080, since your laptop screen will just not have the pixels to display that many pixels.
Watching a video with content I already know because of Linus.
Most Techquickie vids in a nutshell
Does refresh Rate have any impact on gaming? (e.g. 60hz vs 144hz)
+andrew cincotta yea thanks, actually I found a GTX 980 Ti for super cheap, it seams to be stupid not to get a 144hz monitor as well :P
Is it worth buying a 2560x1440 monitor as an upgrade from my1080P one? I don't want a 4K one as that's still hard to run maxed out with current technology and I need some more real estate for productivity purposes. I'm space limited so multiple monitors isn't an option.
yeah depends on the gpu you have. if you have the GTX 970 or the equalvant on the amd side. then it should be fine
Nicholas A. Getting 2xGTX 970 in February. Is it worth the upgrade from 1080 to 1440 though?
stevob211 Yes. 27'' 1440p is great. my R9 290(GTX 970 equivalent) pushes games no problem in ultra at that resolution, and is a massive improvement visually over 1080p.
1080p 24'' monitors are a 91ppi(pixel density)
1440p 27'' monitors are a 109ppi(pixel density)
What that means is, you can sit closer to the 27'' before you see pixels AND you simultaneously have a larger screen, but in the real world, the larger screen will move you further away from the monitor, causing the higher pixel density to be even more noticeable. It is very nice on the eyes.
Can't wait for 4k to be reasonable, but I will be waiting a while for that :)
You don't need a 970 to run 1440p, a 4gb 680 or 770 will max most games on 1440p. I say this because my 780ti maxes ALMOST any game but theres the odd exception like crysis 3 which technically i still max out but i dont consider 30 fps to be playable. Yes it is way way better and definitely worth upgrading from a 1080p to something like a 27 inch 1440p, i did and best decision ever. Games look so much better at the higher resolutions, especially games that have really good graphics, i mean when i saw bf3 in that resolution my jaw dropped it was stunning. I do agree with nochalas though the 970 is the best price to performance card out there right now but not everyone can afford it so i was just letting you know you don,t necessarily need it to max out games.
Just like I heard thats the sweets spot for 1440p gaming. the 970.
A bit of reverb going on here. Great informative video as always guys!
What monitor should I buy for gaming? I want it to look very nice and probably about £200 to spend
Hey, 4k @30hz TN or 1440p @ 60hz IPS? (dell)
Im between the two, same price for me (20$ more or less lol)
You never want 30Hz.
I'd go for the 1440p IPS,
60hz will be much better when gaming
IPS also does better color reproduction (so if your doing art or something it will also do a better job) and has better viewing angles.
mind adding links to the specific models and your region (so people could possibly recommend other deals)
also might want to provide some pc specs so someone other than me can tell you if you could even reliably run 4K
ps. Thought I might mention I just saw a 4k 60hz on newegg for $450: www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824016366&cm_re=4k_monitors-_-24-016-366-_-Product can't comment on the brand or quality as it's out of my experience (someone else feel free to chime in)
They are the Dell U2715H (1440p - about 830 USD converted) and Dell P2815Q (4k - about 880 USD converted)
My gaming rig is a old gtx 680, tho I also have a ps4 and a mac mini for general pc stuff.
Im in Brazil btw, and after looking how much Id need to spend for a 4k-ready rig... man, I guess I'm going for 1440p xD Maybe in 5 years when its cheaper
Thanks for the advice ! Made me remember about the rig specs/what I'd need
I have 1080 p monitor and 1080 p smart phone....that means pixels size of my smartphone is smaller than pixels size in moniter????
JADEJA MAHER yes, they are more condensed
These are the basic questions that people just assume you already know. God bless you LTT
Hey guys con you make a review on the p35wv3 laptop by GIGABYTE??
So a 24inch 4k monitor will have a higher pixel density (aka better picture) than a 27 inch 4K monitor?
yes
So there isn't much of a difference between 1440p and 1080p?
i know........ and why are you responding to a 7 month old comment..........
thank you as fast as possible
How do u get 4;3 on your Asus monitor
So 1440p on a 24 inch monitor will bring scaling issues?
will a 720p video look bad on 1080p monitor??
