I think the only ones in my country are _Opuntia cochenillifera_ . Would those bear edible fruits? Also I can only grow plants in pots, do I need to bring them indoors during the rainy season?
did you ever figure out what specific variety of opuntia they are? There are many species of it, I have several. Im not sure if its Ficus Indica or something else. If you still have them, can you do a follow up video? A picture with the flowers would be ideal. TY!
@@Los13Pitayosdoes _Opuntia cochenillifera_ have good enough fruits for consumption? It seems to be the only specie available here in the Philippines. Planning to buy cuttings after the typhoon season is over.
Sweet, but Opuntia is the easiest to root. If not cut, they still root. Roots also come out of green skin area. If you lay flat, roots will come out all through one side. Crazy.
@@Los13Pitayos prepped? I tried. It dried up. Then I saw fresh small pads uncut near those lol. The whole time they were right there. I got some pads growing wild from last summers cuttings. Half the bote is pine needles lol. Half pine needle half dirt
Hey bro. What is the difference between nopales and pitayas? I'll go check out your other videos, but I've never seen pitayas in person. I only found out about pitayas through a Mexican youtuber.
The Pitayo (stenocereus )is a columnar cactus 🌵 that grows 5-8 metres (about 16-26 feet) gives out a fruit called Pitaya and The Nopal (Opuntia) has cactus pads that give out a fruit called Tuna - Prickly Pear
@@lesliegrier4486 if you plant them in a pot you can gradually put them in direct sun light but this cactus is very strong you can put them in sun they will be okay . It’s all up to you how much you want to take care of it but they don’t really need that much help from us they will be ok
Well maybe not everyone has the luck you have to have tons of prickly pear around them . If everyone had tons of edible prickly pears around them the supermarket will take them off the shelves don’t you think? Not all prickly pears taste the same obviously the supermarket going to put better quality then what some people have around their house
@@Los13Pitayos I don't have the nopal pads like you over here though. They removed all the stems. I'm wondering that if I let the all the cuts dry if it will still root
So these pads will eventually grow those really good prickly pears that you can buy in the super market? I don't mean the small ones. I mean the really big tasty ones?
most farmed cacti are ficus indica, in the south west they farm opuntia engelmanii for the fruit and jam for local supermarkets and such. but most places ficus indica is the species of both the pads and fruit. so yes you'll get the big ones.
I live in Colorado and we have prickly pear cacti growing as high as 8000 ft in the mountains!
Oh wow they are very hardy cactus

Good welcome
In Italy we throw It on the soil and wait the new growth
Do you eat this cactus in Italia 🇮🇹

Hello good morning I haven’t consumed the fruit of a Opuntia cochenillifera

Yes
Would the prepped nopales grow? The ones with thrones removed 🤔 I'm thinking of getting one and letting all cuts callous before potting on it's side
No, the shoots would come from the same place the spines come from.
The prepped nopal I got from the supermarket already giving me new pads

I’ll probably start planting for tu get fruit
Do you think it is absolutely necessary to cut them? I feel like just putting them down would be fine :🤔
You can do both

When do you water it?
Ones or twice a month but they really don’t need it

There's tons of prickly pear around here and they all look thick. The new leaves are thick too. So I'll try a store one instead 🤔 lol

It will grow more cactus pads and fruit. Just don’t know how big the fruit will be
I believe most of the commercial prickly pears are from opuntia indica. I have one growing from seed at the moment. But all opuntias grow fruit.
