Just returned from almost three weeks in the amazing state of Utah with some Opuntia phaeacantha seeds and look forward to seeing if they germinate, fingers crossed. I watch how the desert treats cacti and compare it with the TLC I lavish on my plants, I'd have a lot of dead plants if I behaved like the desert 😂.
I Sowed some Saguara 3 years ago (a Covid lockdown project) and followed your video for this and probably 90% of them germinated. Here's hoping I have similar luck with the opuntia and judging from this video they should grow a bit faster than the saguara. Thanks for all your videos, have a good winter with all your cacti & Happy Christmas

I've not seen this method used with cactus seeds. I've used it for other hard shell seeds. Good idea though, since opuntias have such large , hard shelled seeds. I wonder if humifusa does better if frozen first? Not that it has to. But I notice theⁿ fruit hangs on into spring here. I know that some types of seed , not cactus, but some others do better with a freeze. The Opuntia imbricata is a good plant for out door here. Will take hard cold well!! Hope all come up well for you!!! From Morris Park in the Ozarks, to across the emerald isle, have a wonderful weekend!!! Peace, Love, Plants!!!✌💖🌵🏵🌴🌺🪴🌹🌲🌷🌳💐😃👍

I havent really grown much opuntia from seed, I have one tray right now and I was thinking of growing a bunch of humifusa in spring, due to their cold hardiness. But I mainly grow other cacti, and I recently got loads of seed from BCSS seed catalogue! So I will be sowing those soon under new lights I got. The BCSS seed catalogue is really good, the seed packs are only 50p per pack haha so I got 22 packs

I live in a condo on a beach in central Florida. Prickly Pears grow wild in a small wooded area along the ocean. I have harvested a pear (several actually, delicious), dried the seeds, and have them sitting in a small glass dish in water on my porch where they have been getting sun every day for the past month or more. I plan on putting them in a pot with some potted soil and beach sand tomorrow.

No flowers yet, but the plant(s) are thriving. I keep it on the shaded side of our home which does get enough (apparently) afternoon sun.@@desertplantsofavalon

I prefer to plant my seeds in 5-inch bulb pans so that my seedlings have plenty of room to grow, then wrap the pans in plastic wrap. I've been looking for something to use like a lid, so that I could just lift it and see how my seedlings are doing and add fertilizer and treat any mold or algae that may occur. (A quick spray with hydrogen peroxide will kill most mold or algae, but not hurt the plants. If moss sprouts in your seedling pots, peroxide will not harm it, but you can easily pluck it out with tweezers if you don't want it.) Also, some seedlings are too tall when they sprout to fit under the wrap.
Recently I stopped at a local restaurant supply store and picked up a pack of fifty deli containers to store leftovers in. I was surprised to learn that the containers were the perfect size to fit neatly inside my pots and rest on the little ridge inside the lip. Some of these containers are translucent and some are transparent. I got the transparent ones. It works just like a little cloche that I can lift to examine or work on my babies, then quickly replace. In order to use the same lids on all sizes, the 8-, 12-, and 16-ounce containers all have the same diameter. I find that the 12 oz. containers are tall enough for most seedlings to have plenty of headroom. I recently planted two varieties of Crossandra under them and was able to grow them there for about a month before I needed to transplant them to their separate pots. Since I label my pots on the outside with P-Touch tape, I don't have to worry about interference from plant stakes.
At $4.99 for a pack of fifty, these are easily disposable. Lids are sold separately, so all you get are what you need.

Thanks so much Emmit :-D yes the hydrogen peroxide works so well at killing any of the mold and algae that form on the soil of young seedlings, thats a brilliant idea with the deli containers, and a real bargain price for 5 dollars for 50, thanks so much for sharing the info about them, and thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful weekend XXXX

I've had good success with opuntia when growing them without a bag at all. They are one of the few cacti which can take almost full sun right away. This will help them develop a sturdy stem and keeps them from flopping over. With a bag you can't put them out in the sun of course.

Hi :-D mature Opuntias and cuttings taken from Opuntias can develop fruits after flowering about 3-9 months before the fruits are ready for harvesting for seeds, but if growing Opuntia from scratch from seeds it can take many years before they flower and grow fruits usually fro about 8 ears onwards, but a pad cutting taken from a mature Opuntia can start to flower and grow fruits the following year after they have rooted, thanks so much for watching and have a wonderful Wednesday XXXX
