    I love listening to your narration! Your plants are gorgeous! I have had a hardy opuntia in my yard in New Hampshire and Massachusetts USA for almost 30 years! It looks awful at the end of the winter when the snow melts but it perks back up and by the end of June, it's full of yellow flowers!

    As always most enjoyable, I will say I am not into this cactus yet,but your enthusiasm
    Will get me there one day.
    I am leaning and enjoying the very different cordex plants at the moment
    (It's Daz fault) dioscorea elephantipes, fockea erectus, etc but find it
    Very hard to find both seed and plants in this country?
    I have a COUPLE from Tony irons in Bristol, but little else.
    Still very enjoyable vid,we are off to enjoy a short holiday playing
    Bowls in Norfolk, and look forward to seeing your vids on return, Bill Maureen.

      Thats fantastic you and Maureen are going to be enjoying a wonderful short holiday playing Bowls in Norfolk, that sounds like lots of fun and its so wonderful to get a break away for a few days, So happy you love the Caudex plants, I really love them too, they are so unique and special, my little Dioscorea elephantipies grows a new vine every Autumn and then it dies back in the spring until the following Autumn, but the caudex gets bigger, it can be so hard to find them for sale and seeds too, I hope you are enjoying your holiday, and thanks so much Bill for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you and Maureen lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful afternoon and evening XXXX

    I have that exact cactus at 8:03 but it’s slightly darker green. I got it as a baby and now it’s the size of a football. It’s spikes are the only ones I’m scared of. They are thin and brittle so they will snap and stick in you and it’s a pain to get them out. I still love that cactus though.

    I just got one of the opuntia minima. I’m n plant guy but new to cactus life. Do they get nice and big? I’m in USA Ohio. So we get cold winters. Should I put them in my basement grow house with some grow lights in the winter time

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  4 місяці тому +1

      Thats fantastic you have got an Opuntia minima :-D these Opuntias stay small and compact growing and can be more sensitive to the cold than other types of Opuntias, its best to move them into the basement under grow lights for winter to protect them from frost and cold night temperatures, they are hardy to about 36F if kept dry over the winter months, thanks so much Joe for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic Tuesday XXXX

    Back in the early sixties, every dime store had a seed rack and, along with the zinnias, marigolds, petunias, etc. they always had packets of mixed cacti. In the packets were cactus seeds of all sizes and types, but there was always one seed that was twice as large as all the others. When I planted my seeds, I always watched to see what came out of that big seed. That seed was always an Opuntia. Sadly, none of the windows in our house were sunny enough, so they didn't survive long. But that was always the first seed to sprout, so I can say that the first cactus that I grew from seed was an Opuntia.
