I’ve been eating cactus my whole life and it wasn’t until I was older that I realized it was strange to other people. I love it grilled, in eggs, in pico de gallo, and in so many other dishes. If you get past the slimy part, it really is an amazing thing to try and is very important in Mexican food. If ever given the opportunity, try it!
Right, it's fire and the prickly pear.
Hello, can I ask how it tastes like? Cause I haven't eaten a cactus before and we don't have a cactus here.
I'm just curious
@@cestlavie6063 it tastes very good, slimy kinda like ocra
@@cestlavie6063 it’s a little citrusy, almost a little acidic.
The flavor is good, for me what gets me it’s the slimy texture. But depending on the preparation that texture sometimes is not present, I have had it raw in salads as well.
Sunny’’s food channel is the only one I’ve seen focusing in Nopales, and that is remarkable. Is very nice to give a windows to the world of such of underrated food such as the nopal.

But he almost died??
This plant is wonderful! I was diagnosed with stomach ulcers and find out that side effects from medicine I was taken were worse and will affect my heart. Getting out of the hospital one day, I remembered my grandma told me once that nopal will refresh my stomach, so I went to a mexican place where they make fresh juice and ask for nopal and water shake. The attendant keeps on asking me " are you sure, that's all you want?" I was still filling sick and nauseated. After taking like half of the drink I felt great. I started making this drink at home every week for 3 months and got cured. One day my coworker told me she was filling seak from her stomach and I advised to drink cactus, she was Caucasian and did not what kind of cactus to buy and I show her on a website, that day I kept on reading more about cactus and find out that by eating it or on a drink raw will neutralize the stomach acidity and that is why I was feeling so good after drinking it. I try this drink with a person that had a bad hangover and it work. I am not lying this happened to me and I have been able to help a lot of my closed friends just with cactus drink.
i've been having lots of stomach problems lately; i will try cactus. there's a mexican grocery store near here and they also sell hot foods and stuff; hopefully i can find a cactus dish
@@lang-ed3bk I guess I should feel lucky to walk out behind my house and grab a nopal to snack on. I don't, but I just might now.
wow! ds is d best comment i have read on cactus
My aunt taught me the high benefits of eating raw nopales. I never add water when I cook them; they cook in their slime. They are delicious grilled!
@@asherrogers2687 before this, I had COVID for about a week. Quarantine in room with family at home, but they left and I secretly went outside. Then I decided to grab a cactus after some research, and cooked it. I felt so great after and felt like I needed to eat it everyday. So far I have been having great blood sugars, and I have been feeling better.
It’s refreshing to see someone enjoy authentic food without being scared of the new flavors and textures

It's Prickly Pear Cactus, it's everywhere in the US. there's nothing special about it.
Nor any of the food made with it. You're just living in a rock
Say that to italians
Nopales are literally on the Mexican flag 🇲🇽. That’s how important nopales are to the Mexican people. Great way to highlight a staple that rarely is mentioned. Great video.
mhm! it’s indeed a staple to the country. The pads on a prickly pear cactus are mainly eaten here, but someday, I’m going to try both thr fruit and pads. Off my own cacti.

Mexico is underrated as one of the world's truly most beautiful countries. The wild desert, the farms, wildlife, birds, the big blue agave against a purple sunset. The clash of modern & traditional blends so bright & colorful in CMX, it's a loud and fun exciting city! I miss it! My gran especially loves the pickled nopalitos.

I'm 100% sure it grows in the States too
Come to south texas. I live in central and I could still go out any day of the week and just take a nopal home and cook it. Not to mention the mexican food shops that have all the spices you’d need.

I remember the first time I had nopal. It was 1995 in Mexico City, freshly cut in Tablas Del pozo Ecatepec Morelos estado de Mexico.
My aunt, may her soul Rest In Peace, grilled the Nopal, added some lime and some salt and gave it to me with a tortilla. I was 5 years old and I loved it. Till this day, it’s one of my most fond memories. I miss her so much and every time I eat nopal, it reminds me of her. She gave me the love of nopal lol
I appreciate and admire your story, bro. Rest in peace and greatness to the beloved. Also, I tried nopal in Arizona. Didn't know it was called nopal though, but I love it.
Aww, that’s touched my heart. God bless your aunt.
Whoever mixes the music for these is pure genius
When I used to be a vegetarian this was one of my go to "vegetables" 🌵. Mom and I would cook it in scrambled eggs, veggie hash, tacos, and juice. If you are vegan or vegetarian, I highly recommend this vegetable. You won't be disappointed.
P. S. I like to forage tunas to make juice and I found it good for the immune system. 💚💚💚
A lot of UA-camrs when they go to Mexico yes they do eat nopales but I don't see nobody going to the fields thank you for that 🧡🧡🧡
I live in Los Angeles and I recently started to include cactus with my burritos when I saw some people do it at my local food truck. I actually like it…its texture is like Bell Peppers to me. Nopales…now I know the word in Spanish! 😃
Cook it and put salt
Technically isn't Spanish, is a náhuatl word, but is used in Mexican Spanish as well so local people considered a spanish word
It's fire as a salsa, but the prickly pear fruit are good too.
Which food truck have it?
Definitely not the texture is similar to okra
Wonderful episode as usual; Herman was such a great guest! He has a ton of charisma!
Huevos con nopales (scrambled eggs with cactus) it's one of the best breakfast you can get😋
Ah, good memories from my grandparents house 🙂
I like nopales and corn for breakfast:)
Or chorizo, nopales and egg for breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner...ummm ummm good!
That slime in the Nopal also protects your stomach when you eat tons of spices. That's why you find it so much in taquerias - or you will find sliced cucumber....refreshing! And Queso Oaxaca is sooooooo good, my favourite, along with the Queso Ranchero hmmmmmmmmmm.
Aloe Vera juices as well help with protection & stomach digestion.
Mexican stores usually carry a variety of aloe vera juices products.
Try grilling two nopales with queso in between. so good.

1)Try it raw with a little bit of lime juice and salt (it’s amazing) even better when the nopal is cold.
2)when doing a barbecue take advantage and sprinkle some salt on it and grill it on both sides until it turns a grayish green color.
3) cactus salad is great for barbecues as well. Chop about 5 raw nopales into small squares and boil with half an onion and a small bunch of cilantro, add salt to taste. Once cooked drain and rinse a little. Chop the other half of the raw onion, about 3 small tomatoes, a bunch of cilantro, squeeze half of a lime and add salt to taste.

My family is from DURANGO and my hubby is from MICHOACAN. I was born and raised here in chicago & California. We were raised eating Nopales. Here is a few ideas
Nopales con huevo( scramble eggs)
Nopales con chili de guajillo
Nopales con carne
Salad with Nopales
Quesadilla con nopales
Nopales con pineapple agua
Nopales con aloe vera y garlic drink
So many ways to combine Nopales with..🙂
I'm Mexican American, we eat nopal all the time. Grilled with lemon juice, in a tortilla with fresh salsa, one of the most nutritious things u can eat! Love them with short ribs and red chili sauce, make it every Day of the Dead, bc it was my Nana's favorite. They are good raw in a picadillo salad. cactus dishes, especially cactus Mexican omelette, r delicious and cactus helps every part of ur anatomy, from the top of ur head, to ur toe nails! Cactus blossoms r beautiful and turn into the sweetest cactus fruit. Tunas, (prickly pear), r so sweet and refreshing!
This episode was simply amazing, I love this series cause I’m from New Mexico and really thought Mexico was just cartel stuff but this is helping me understand the scope of Mexicos beauty
😑
SMH please stop watching Narcos on Netflix
You guys leave me tf alone I’m learning
It's ok, here in Mexico we believe the US is all about school shootings and Nazis/cops killing people of colour.
All green is the way to go! Let's go Cactus!!

I don't comment much but I just wanted to leave this here and say thank you to the team at BEFRS for dedicating so much of their time and lives to creating this content. I hope you've enjoyed making these videos as much as I've liked watching them!
Eating this with egg, a Pico de gallo type salsa or just grilled during a carne asada is so good
Prickly pear tunas makes the best jelly. Also delicious raw. It is so sweet and makes a dark ruby colored jelly.
