- It doesn't get easier than this guys, find a cactus pad, stick it in a pot with some dirt and 3 months later you have a new plant :). This propagation method will work on most cactus varieties.

This video saved me some tears when I accidentally tipped my cactus over. Two pads fell off and I'm hoping to propagate then using your method!
they're super easy :)
I admire your philosophy on prickly pear cactus. I live in the corner of 4 states that all produce this cactus Southeast Kansas, Northeast Oklahoma, Southwest Missouri, and Northwest Arkansas. It's everywhere, but most "so-called gardeners" treat it as a nuisance. I on the other side look at them as "nopales". I include them in my amateur garden ( 81 yrs old ). This is my 3rd year and second "blooming" of the cactus I "rescued" from a roadside and I am ready to propagate!
I love the sounds of a garden while you’re planting. It’s magic. I love to propagate plants and give them away to people. I can’t let any plant die either. Great video!
I kept ruining gloves. An older lady in my town, with a giant cacti garden showed me how she uses bbq tongs to handle and plant.
Even now when I go to the box stores and I see plants on death row, I buy them all.
@@qctropicals Haha!! Me too. Half of the plants in my yard, are the dead discount plants from there too.
Man this helped so much, I loved your statement about creating life and saving those cactuses. Great work man :) I have been wanting to propagate one of these for a while so thank you for helping out!
I fell in love with my friend’s Prickly Pear Cactus! I took some pad cuttings and here I am listening to your great advice. I also love your wonderful plant philosophy, you must be an old soul or very close to God. I will enjoy watching my Prickly Pear Cactus thrive, thank you for sharing 💜🙏🏻
Such a detailed and informative tutorial, I’m a TN native and took a pad off a plant down in florida and am so excited to have one in my room
You’re like the Bob Ross of botany. I swear just peaceful to watch
Thank you buddy!
Thank you for saving all the cactus🌵 plants , they provide us oxygen 🙂
And food😁
@@maysonjones3051 yes indeed, the prickly pear fruits are so good!😋
Tell that to Australia.
And there full of water!!@
م
I am so happy I found this. I really appreciate your outlook on life of all life forms. Thank you for sharing ❤
I found it helpful to use those silicone tipped tongs that you can get at the dollar store.
Appreciate your demonstration and your growing philosophy!
Thank you for the info! I live in NJ and found a prickly pear cactus but didn’t know how to propagate it. Thanks to your video, now I do! 👍🏼
Great video! Thanks for the help! Attempting to propagate my first prickly pear pad today; wanted to make sure it takes!
I have a pad on the window inside and after a few weeks it started to grow a new pad!
Dude, you deserve ultimate respect ✊🏼 You’re my hero!
Everything about this tutorial aside from being incredibly helpful and peaceful with the oasis of nature’s sounds was so adorable, your love for this shows very clearly and you have some great insights too! Thanks 🙏 I have an indoor prickly that I knocked the top off by accident and unfortunately we are not in the growing season so I’m hoping I can successfully propagate it!
It brings me peace and makes me happy🙏🏾🎉🌵
Awesome stuff, thank you! I feel like other videos that were shorter didn't give all the necessary details needed to know how to do this from start to finish. Like how long till they're fully rooted. For that you earned a new subscriber, thanks again!
Great video Thank you for sharing all your knowledge !!!
Terrific content, I really appreciate your video and attitude
I have winter hardy Opuntia here in Canada and they make it to -30 celsius or -22 Fahrenheit. I the spring they are all shriveled up but it doesn’t take long for them to plump up start growing
Thank you so much for this video! I have lots of my grandmother's prickly pears in the ground but rotting due to low light under my deck and too wet. I will repot them into a raised garden card with wheels so they get more sun. I will cut the pads off of the top and disgard the wet roots. Thanks so much! Really appreciate your tips! God bless you!
Thank you for your service!
Thank you so much. You are so kind sharing this with me. We'll ... . All of us 😅 lol GOD grant you great fortune and the love of wisdom to go with it❤.
you're so kind!. You as well!
Great video... Very informative... THANK YOU!!!! 🙏🙏👍👍
So far all the comments are about the fruit. To me the best part is a tender paddle. It has a lemony flavor.
Like chili rellenos? Try substitute the pepper with a boiled catus paddle. Slice off the thorns without gouging off the mound. Boil for 15 min . Then Cut a pocket in the side for a slice of jack cheese. Dredge, batter and fry as usual.
I've never tried it. In my "to do" list.
thank you for saving the cactus pads
Fantastic video. This could not have been done any better. You answered every question in advance and did it with no time wasted. Thank you for this!
I got a pad from North Carolina, and came home and put in a shot glass and within a week we had roots from the nodes, I am super excited!
Awesome video thank you

Another kindred spirit to add to my collection ...
Great video.love your love for plants. I am propagating 12 pads from neighbor's plants. thank you so much. what a blessing!
🎉I adore this man😘🧓
Thanks for the video.
I’m currently moving 500 cuttings 😳starting some from tunas also. I got a break, been at it all day and decided to watch some videos on it 😂😂
Really enjoyed how you gave examples. This might not be for everyone to do. You have a real calling/love for it!
I think anything at any level whether it’s saving/planting plants, growing your own food, reusing bags, reusable cups, electric cars, going vegan, repurposing/buying from thrift shops, going solar etc are small steps in the right direction. 🌱🌈🌍
Great video......Go Army!
Great video 🤙 very helpful I will be doing this to my cactus
Here in Canada we have opuntia species. The trick is to dry them out thoroughly in the autumn like do not water at all until late spring early summer.
So informative, great video, thank you!
Thank you for the great info! I have a patch of prickly pear in Iowa that I plan to share with family and friends.
You are awesome…
Probably one of the few things I like about Arizona! You can grow cactus outside! Other than that way, way, way too hot for me! Love the cactus however I'm on the northeast coast (Ohio) and have a prickly pear as a houseplant.
I have a prickly pear cactus and I live in Iowa and the cactus survives thru Iowa winters!
did not think they could survive frozen ground. That's good to hear!
I see your Army hat. I'm a vet too and love gardening. Even just a few mins a day really makes a difference on stress levels.
I agree, plants gave me the purpose I lost when I left the Army.
Loving the Bob Ross vibes! One correction: the Eastern prickly pear is has the largest range of any cactus in the US and is the only cactus native to Canada thanks to antifreeze chemicals it produces that allow it to survive temperatures as low as -25 deg F.
Can you propagate these type in water?? I've always been afraid to
Where do you get those huge black containers that your potting mix was in? Also do you have a video of you making your potting mix? If not that would be very helpful to a lot of growers new and old. Take care and great video. Very relaxing.
yes, we buy them from local landscapers. And for the video, check this one out ua-cam.com/video/H8dzNF5mSRY/v-deo.html
@@qctropicals I've been to all the local landscape suppliers here in Florida nd I've never seen them. What are they called and what size are they? I'll have to source them online.
@@kma5699 Not local suppliers, they actual landscapers planting trees. They're called nursery pots #15 #25 and so on. Otherwise try online at greenhousemegastore.com
So what can you grow from the fruit?
Is there a specific prickly pear cactus that we can propagate for the fruit to make jelly or is it all? Also, what kind of plant do I get to have nopales to eat. I fell in love in Mexico and want more
You will want to go with a 'spineless' species for the nopales. Opuntia ficus-indica will do for all of your requirements.
Great video Amigo!
Hi! I live in Az. I potted about 6 mos ago. When do I transplant? Now in Feb or wait til it gets hotter? thanks for your reply. Great video.
once you see roots coming out the bottom of the pot
And also live on through your children. I enjoyed the video. Very informative.
Thanks for the video, I want to know can you take one with fruits on and propegate it ?
Great video! Only question I have is do you have to "harden" off the cuttings? I read that the cuttings needs this stage prior to potting. Maybe you said it and I missed it😅. Thanks
that would be a myth. I stick them right in the pots. I used to follow that advise until I saw pads literally falling over and rooting in the ground by themselves.
@qctropicals thanks for the quick reply! Literally on my way to our neighborhood park to grab myself a piece
I subscribed
Good job man,, thanks for the info,, I just have a few, so far,,,
How long do you wait for them to callus up before planting?
I don't. I stick them right in the pots as shown in the video.
Could I propagate a whole arm of the prickly pear the same way? Do I just cut at the base and then plant the lower pad the same as you did here?
you can chop it to pieces and every piece will root or you can do a full arm, your choice :)
Ok, so right after you plant, them is it ok just to leave in the sun or some shade?
I like the spineless species of these!
I haven't seen spineless around here.
We have spineless here in Malta, Europe. They make very sweet large fruit, albeit to a lesser quantity. Its great. My father used to take photos with his face against the pad!
When you transplant them in the ground. Do you water them right away? Or wait to water?
if the potting mix I used is dry, I water. Otherwise I only water when fully dry which takes a while.
I am in Canada and have a prickly pear cactus inside. It grows well but does not flower. Is there anything I can do to encourage fruit? It is in cactus soil and in a sunny spot. Any suggestions?
you need more sun and heat. It also needs to be consistent.
Can you put them directly in the ground where you want them?
yes
My Prickly Pear Cactusus flowers fall, off. What do U recommend for, them?
normal when plants are small
This is a great vid. You should have more subs. Thank you 👍
Propagating some now, but question… What happens if you just bury the fruit?
seeds will sprout
for propagating this is the most easiest plant . normally its ready for plantation after 15 days let them to dry . even we let them in the nature its grow gets roots by the part which it contact with the soil. its amazing !
Do you water them when you put them in the pots?
only if the soil is dry otherwise no.
Awesome tutorial! I just rescued a big batch of prickly pear cactus on the side of a road.. gonna propagate by using your method! My question is, Can you plant the cactus fruits that grows on the cactus? How? Thnx
not him, but you can not. You can take the seeds when they're ripe and plant them!
I know where 50 foot of the side of the road is covered in these, I recently learned of the fruit. The state mower mowed half of them . I mean pads like basket balls, some with fruit , right now, any advice
@@dirtwizard5647 if the very bottom of the plant is still there then they should be okay
@@HHH92104 it's still there , the mower only got the front side not the main cacti. The main plant is like 6 foot tall with thorns big enough to kill. I can get the pads no problem. I have 2 thornless pads I'm going to plant, I have seeds from the real deal , coworker brought the fruit, I said what the @#$& is that, lol, I saved the seeds probably got 40 or more no 1 seeds. I have been on a mission, I do landscaping but we're high up east cost not really many cactus here if u see any someone ownes it. I know where several are I'm in the process of getting pads from them. ✌️😎
@@dirtwizard5647 that’s great. I’m in Texas so we got cactus galore. I always keep a few pads around to propagate. I love the fruit but I’m sure up there it’d be full of seeds. You can even grow them inside, I would take the propagated pads indoors so they don’t freeze.
Love it! Been trying to grow some from seeds
they grow easy from seed but cuttings are way easier!
There good , prickly pears!!!
I'm eating..em!!!
I got myself some prickly pear cactus and I like to know if I can add gravel along with catus potting mix?
You can if you'd like but truly not needed.
You don’t need a saw you don’t need the shears you just need a sharp knife to cut the pads and then use a glove or tongs to pick it up
What about drainage and water ?
all trees need drainage. Here in the desert I water cactus when I remember. Yes, they're that easy.
I like this guy, I'd hang out with him :) just potting starts together for our community
I’m just curious, how fast do they grow? I have 2 plants and hade them for a year and they haven’t grown,
Depends on temperature. If warm, they're rooted fully within 6 months. Once rooted, expect 2-4ft a year
Are all pad cactus will produce fruits or do they have different variety that will produce fruits?
all pad cactus produce fruits.
How long does it take to have edible fruit?
Several cuttings from this video already have fruit on them. Depending on temperatures, normally they fruit same year.
the commentary on this one has me 😂
How long before they start giving fruit
Normally within the same year if propagated early.
I have seen several different opinions on how deep to bury them. How many inches underground should they be? Or does it matter?
It doesn't matter. I've had pads root in full sun sitting on top of the dirt and others fully buried still rooted. What's easiest for you, will work.
How are you doing....this without gloves
Yikes!!!
I have prickly thorns all in my fingers!!!?
bet you won't do it again lol
@@qctropicals O heck...no , I want!!!!
Ouch!!!!
♥️
😂😂
I just discovered these cactus and the benefits of it.I.dont drive electric car or vegan
I eat meat and drive gas powered car but i also like gardening and shopping at thrift stores to save money. As for saving the planet God created the earth and mankind and told us not to live for the world but be faithful to your creator.
♥️✝️♥️😊
the glockets are the worse
I can’t view your video
Take a pad and throw it where you want it to grow. It doesn't take twenty plus minutes to explain this.
All you people thinking they need saving are ridiculous. They're so hardy, they're invasive. UA-cam "Cactus Australia".
These cacti don't need your help.
🎉Hi, Desert person here, I have tons of mesquite trees, can I use the old bark instead of pine bark in the mix?🧓
Mesquite trees are nurse plants for cacti.
@@blackkennedy3966 Yes, I know this. My question is about the bark. To use in the mix. Not about what they do. 🧓
@@klee88029 cactus think mesquite bark and leaves are tasty🌵😋
