Should I get one of the slings instead of the small camera cube? How do they fit with a medium packing cube and a tech pouch and some smaller thing in the main compartment?
So the camera cube you’d want in the travel backpack to help organize your camera gear so that when you open the bag from the back or side, you’ll have everything available to you. Now the sling is something that is a bit of a tight squeeze but can work where you put it above the camera cube. This is usually for when I’m travelling between places. When I’m in a city I might not want to travel with such a big bag so I’ll pull out the sling and use it say, in the city and carry just one camera body and lens.
This is probably enough for all of my gear right now! The video and drone gear is what takes up a lot of space so I do have to pick and choose what I bring and make a call on what’s must-have vs. nice-to-have
I have this same travel bag along with the packing cubes and I have to disagree with your opinion of the small packing cube. If you fold your t-shirts into 3rds and lay them flat, you can easily fit 8-10 t-shirts in the small packing cube. Same as if you fold them into 3rds and then roll them up (more of a "ranger roll"), you can also fit 8-10 shirts. You just have to play around with it a little more because the way you had them rolled up long ways in the video is probably the least effective way to do it. But happy traveling!
On flights I usually have it “compressed” mode. As it is when it’s full, it can be a challenge to put it under the seat but if you’re only talking about overhead, you’ll have better luck getting it in with it expanded. I’ve never really had issues with having the bag up in the overhead.
Seriously considering getting one ahead of a 3-day trip to Norway. Interested to see you putting a 5l sling inside the travel backpack. Do you think a 10l sling would also fit?
There's one shot in there when I have the 5L sling inside the backpack. It was really brief but at 7:03 I have it inside. The 10L sling is going to be too big though.
Yes, as you said Will. Btw, I went on a trip to Japan last month. And if you don’t mind, I just want to share my short review of this travel backpack and all its accessories. So, almost identical to your settings, I went with Travel Backpack, 5L sling, and a suitcase for a week long trip (winter). 1. Also as a PeakDesign fan, I thought so much about how people are able to fit in 3 days clothes (don’t even imagine a week), camera gears, etc into this backpack. Unless I’m going super minimalist with 1 spare clothes, I don’t think I can do it. So yeah, a separate was a must. 2. So then, can I bring this bulky (even in compressed state) backpack with a cabin luggage? I doubt it and didn’t want to take risk, so I checked in my luggage. 3. Anyway, I don’t know if guys can feel it, but this travel backpack is heavy on its own, almost an unbearable weight for a day-long carry when it’s fully filled, for a woman. Honestly I can’t imagine if the weather is hot and humid. 4. I tried to bring my shoe pouch as an external carry, I didn’t see you talk about shoe pouch here Will, but any positions seemed wrong and so I decided to not bring extra shoes. The small handles on both sides of the pouch are just awkward to be clipped with the external carry straps. Maybe you should try and review this Will! I don’t see anyone on UA-cam review the shoe pouch as external carry. 5. Wash pouch, I didn’t bring my wash pouch at all, because as awesome as the design goes, it’s quite large and I don’t need that much space for my toilettries. I was and still am wondering why the size of tech pouch and wash pouch are different? Why they don’t do 2 sizes for each pouch, or make tech pouch bigger than wash pouch? I know not everyone brings a lot of tech gears, but their market is around photographer, travel blogger, and then others. Doesn’t it just make sense to prioritize tech pouch size than wash pouch? Hahaha and I believe a lot of people use provided toilettries in their accommodation, or bring as little soap and shampoos as possible when traveling. Anyway, thanks for reading such a long comment. As a fangirl myself, I just hope they can do much better in the future. I don’t know, maybe their team will read this somehow. LOL
I Know it's a relative question but for your experience you may be able to put more clothes in this backpack than a regular carry on with wheels and let's say you can put it without problems up in the compartment of the airplane
Yes you can definitely put quite a bit of clothes in this backpack compared to a regular carry-on but that would be based on a few conditions: 1) You don't use any of the camera cubes and 2) You expand the backpack fully. There's no rigid structure to this bag which means that you can really stretch it out if you really need to. Of course, like you said, there's going to be a limit because you still need to be able to put it in the overhead or under your seat in front if we're talking about a plane.
Good review, agree with some of the negatives. Bottom/exterior pouch is kind of useless for anything besides the rain fly, if it was at the top or even the sides I think it would have been a lot better. I came from a Deuter bag that has its rain fly in the bottom that doubles as a pad which I think is a much superior design. Also hate the middle divider which has the worst zipper choice and is a nightmare to use. But small flaws in an overall great bag if you accept their ways of doing things.
Ah no way so the Deuter bags have extra padding you mean in the rain fly section or is it a pad that you can pull out to use for sitting? Middle divider wise, I haven't had TOO much trouble with the zippers there but you're right they were small and not the most comfortable to use when you're trying to access things.
@@GoingAwesomePlaces finally using the bag for 6 days travel. I bought the medium and small packing cubes. I stuffed them full and added a shoe bag with shoes (non peak design) and a tablet (in the laptop compartment). I also folded my coat in there. Pretty comfortable with so much things inside and i brought into the cabin of a B737. Fit nicely into the overhead compartment. No problem with the middle divider. I rolled it into the small compartment at the bottom. overall a good bag.
I have the Peak Design as my travel backpack. I like the simple sleek design without all the stuff on the outside. I snapped the top to it to make it look smaller and for a sleeker contour rather than boxy looking. The main reason I chose this backpack was for the security features it provides when you are traveling in crowded public spaces. Unfortunately this is something none of the UA-cam backpack reviewers talked about...
this isn't really a bag made for checking in but it'll handle it for sure, took it to Japan with me, it's the best bag I've ever used and I've gone through about a dozen.
I do the folder thing as well and keep it within the laptop area. Great minds think alike! I bought the small packing cube and haven’t used it because of its weird shape too. I was kind of surprised by how rough the texture was on the outside of the bag. Amazing detailed review!
Thanks for watching Chris! Yes the texture is rough and I don't necessarily think it's a bad thing - a unique fabric for sure. The small packing cube will have l limited uses I feel like and I might repurpose it for something else??
I get the vibe that it's good in theory but ultimately slightly annoying to use? Would that be a fair assumption? I really wanted to get a one bag travel that could convert to a camera bag for when I travel and film. Sensing that this is more frustrating than it's worth? Are you still using it now or have you moved onto something else?
try holding the tech pouch from the bottom using the straps like peak designed them :) I get what you say, but I am thinking your not doing it right :) great review, thanks man!
Thanks! So with the Tech Pouch, I know they have the straps down there but they're not for a full fist full of holding. It's meant to slip your fingers in to hold like a book which goes with the accordion style but it's still awkward especially if you want to grab it out of your bag or if you want to carry it on its own on the go. It's too flat and non-grippy that it's really given me trouble as I've travelled with it.
Great content! These are really cool backpacks. I know a summer backpack called ACOOL that has electric fans and is going to indiegogo. Maybe you want to check that out.
Peak Design is horrible at the harness if you carry substantial camera gear. Fine for getting through airports, but if your pack is full and want to walk around for a full day, your shoulders are done.
Yeah I hear ya. I'm used to carrying big loads on my shoulders but there's definitely room for improvement in this area. The padding is better than the Everyday Backpack but after repeated use the straps do compress down and become less effective.
@@GoingAwesomePlaces I use Mindshift for travel, but looking at Atlas for full day adventure. Maybe it could be good for travel, but will require a few more pouches for travel gear. I do like it can sinch down. For me carrying weight on my shoulders is tiring over time. Camera gear is heavy. 30L of camera gear is considerably heavier than clothes. A 1" strap isn't a load bearing device.
@@rogerhuston8287 Have you found that the waist strap makes a difference though? That's been a big change for me coming from the Everyday Backpack and on full day hikes, I've used that to spread the weight.
@@GoingAwesomePlaces A real hip belt makes all the difference. This waist strap on PD is more for stability than weight. With a real hip belt you can put 95% of the load there if you want, or anything in between. With just shoulder straps it's 100% all the time. I find that I change the weight distribution through the day. Take a look at a hiking backpack that can carry 30, 40 or 50 lbs to compare load. My day pack with food water and clothes is 15lbs, with camera equipment, it's 30+.
I got this bag after watching a bunch of videos on youtube. I took it for travel on 6 flights on the first day. It was denied on all 6 flights for being too tall/long. It's way too heavy when empty even with empty cubes. You lose most of your space to having cubes in it, even if they are empty. The bag is best with no cubes inside but it's still too heavy compared to my other bags.
Ah that's too bad man! I know the bag isn't for everyone and sad to hear that it might not work out for how you want to use it. That's why I've created all these videos in hopes to show people what the bag is really like so they can make an informed decision. You going to keep it or perhaps re-sell it?

Oh boy! don’t even think to put in 10L sling, it will take at least 2/3rd of the backpack and it’s going to be awkward due to the 10L shape.
@@dominicanovita Yeah I definitely wouldn't recommend it. It's probably better to have it outside of the bag as a companion sling.
