How do you get to the point that you started at?
This is by far the best tutorial about bone tool ever. Thanks.
Thanks.
Thank you! Was having so many problems with the bone tool. The null really helps.
Yes, the null object, concept taken from After Effects, really helps the tool out.
thank you so much man, you've made my life so much easier. Now the bone tool doesn't annoy me anymore wooo!!
Happy the tutorial worked for you. A new version with advanced techniques in the works.
So....SO instructive. THANK you for not just showing off your rig hut "step-by-stepping" through it!!!
You are welcome. Stay tuned. More Animate CC and other tutorials on the way.
Thanks so much, this helped me a lot! I wasn't able to place several bone joints on one symbol, until you explained the use of null objects.
Yes, the null objects or the graphic symbols are the key.
@@WhatMakeArt I can't find where in the video you explain what the null symbols are for. What are they for? I wish you'd explained this right at the beginning where you say that they're necessary.
The nulls are not necessary to use the bone tool. They are necessary so you have another joint control for the hands. They also allow you to have more joints for the entire body.
I explained the difference between using them and not and this video with a simple arm.

Hi mate! This tutorial helped me a lot with the process of understanding this program. But I have a problem I can't seem to solve and it's that either I import an Illustrator file and it opens it like a whole structure without any layers or, when I separate the parts into symbols in Aodbe Illustrator, it opens each part as a separate layer and that's causing me a lot of troubles. Does anyobody knows how I can fix that? Thank you so much!

I got one question, if I wanted to use a skeleton with another character, and I have all the body parts grouped per body part, for example all the hands in one symbol, all the heads in just one symbol, etc. Could I just duplicate and change the symbols one by one, or would I have to create the skeleton all over again?
With the bone tool and animate you have to create a new rig. In after effects using the Duik plugin you can replace the character art on an already animated sequence
There's a playlist showing you how to get set up
How to Rig a Character with Duik Bassel in After Effects CC: ua-cam.com/play/PL8G4GiXpgTvIysKfGV30KFhpE1_kHbGOW.html
@@WhatMakeArt Thank you, I think I'll just create the rigs again, your tutorial was real eye-opener to me. 👏
I already created the rigged character, but whenever I try to save it as a symbol, and try to copy it, it loses the rigs, how do you save them?
if you are in windows
option = alt
command = ctrl
Exactly
For Windows: command means control(Ctrl) and option means Alt.
Excellent point, thanks
ua-cam.com/video/v84zAJi704k/v-deo.html
Isn't the use of rigging within a single layer bound everything into a single object?
After finishing the rigging, you pressed the Free Variant Tool (Q) to select a single object rather than a single object and transform it.
How did you do that?
When I use rigging, all objects are grouped together, and even when I use a free transformation tool, all of them are chosen as only one mass of objects.
It works if you use the old bone tool in animate, but there is a newer tool to parent layers together. That may work better
thank you so much sir, you deserve more subs and more views, everything you told was in detail plus whenever we heard the button pressing in the keyboard you always mentioned it in the left corner of the video that which button you pressed was really helpful, keep up the good work thanks again!

Here from the future may 2020, DO NOT USE THIS TOOL. USING PARENTING. THIS TOOL IS BUGGED. YOU CAN'T EXTEND THE ANIMATION, THE TIMING IS LOCKED. IF YOU WANT TO CHANGE THE TIMING YOU MUST JUST START AGAIN.
Yes, layer parenting in Adobe Animate is the way of the future. We'll be posting a video on layer parenting for animated characters.
But this remains an option for those with earlier versions of Adobe Animate that do not have the option for layer parenting. Best is to update to the new versions.
@@WhatMakeArt how is the fastest way to make an 10 minutes of a cartoon animation, with keyframes classic tween warp.... or with this bone tool?
Have a nice day.
10 minutes is a lot of animation. if you're looking for the fastest way then definitely some sort of automatic training will get you there. My advice is to start with a smaller shorter project of around 10 seconds or so. Use smaller projects to develop your skills and then work on the larger 10 minute project.
@@WhatMakeArt I work in more then 5 Adobe programs in the last 10 years but I am new in this Animate, I have the script, the audio, the characters of the cartoon, now I need to animate...thanks for the advice! I exercise until I master it

Thank you so much. now i understand how bones work on animate.

Thanks for making this video. I'm new to animation and am trying my best to work on character animation. One problem I had was trying to change the null symbol color. It just wouldn't change. Any advice? My screen looks different from yours, but I tried to change the fill color with the paint bucket, or just by clicking on it and choosing transparent, but nothing worked.
Make sure you go to the library and edit the main symbol and not just a single instance of a symbol. You need to double-click the symbol to make sure you're inside the symbol.
there are newer techniques in animate CC such as layer parenting that you should also try out for character animation.
Good luck and post some animations after you get them done.
Thank you this helped so much
Glad it helped, will post updated version.
Finally! Someone that can actually make this tool work. I upgraded to CS4 when it came out just to get to the Bone Tool, but have found it to be more trouble than it was worth, but this has me believing it might work. Thanks!
Glad you like the tutorial. Hope it works for you. If you have newer version of Animate you should also try out layer parenting it can work like the bone tool as well but then can be fixed later on. Both are good tools but layer parenting is the newer. Good luck and post some animations when you're done.
that is no puppet ...if you move the body nothing happens ...how would you do an anticipation ? Or a sqush ?
A better tool would be after affects with the Duik plugin, now called angela rxlaboratory.org/tools/duik-angela/
Hope the animation turns out well
when creating the bones, it wont let me go from one object to another 1:45 ( I get 🛇 next to the little bone on the mouse) . I figured if I select everything and do it while selected it will work but later on 3:18 when I try to move the objects together, can't do without moving everything.
I found out what that you need to change the objects to graphic by clicking F8, decided to leave the comment in case somebody have the same problem.
As kristian sivkov mentions, the parts of the character need to be graphic symbols. This is mentioned at 0:16 but should be highlighted more in the video.
Thanks for the info dude🙏🙏🙏🙏
My pleasure
Best tutorial on the Bone Tool I've seen... Thanks!
Glad it worked for you. More Animate CC tutorials in production.
Hello, it was very helpful tutorial only that I encountered a problem and I think you are the person who knows the answer.. Sorry to bother you.
If I wanted to edit, use the eraser or to color, I understand that it can not. But I have some places where they do not fit, and I would like to color to look good (specifically, at the elbow)
I do not know if you understand what I mean, because I am not speaking English very good..
So, i want to color and erase, how do I do that?
Or do I have to draw from the beginning how you drew that belly so that when it bends it doesn't stay empty?
I hope you understand what I mean... Apology.
Hard to say without seeing your exact character and file. you can always use the Q or free transform tool to reposition the anchor points to make it bend better.
You can also go inside the individual graphic symbols and draw in them. Remember you need to double-click inside the graphic symbol too change them. If you do not see the graphic symbols there you can find them in the properties panel in the library of graphic symbols to the right and you can edit them there.
It's always best to make a test with your character rig and post it in different ways to see if all the pieces will work well together and then fix it before animating.
Thank you verry much, i'll try that. Do you have an instagram account or other account where we can contact you?

How can i create a null symbol? Pls help me :(
You just need to make a graphic symbol on a new layer and then duplicate it. You don't have to call the symbol "null" I just used that in the tutorial, you can name it anything you want.
when i use my bonetool i doesnt make a path anyone knows why ?
Make sure each piece of the character is a graphic symbol.

You have some great tools on your website and I'll have to try them out. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you! I hope you will find many of the tools useful. We've been around for nearly 10 years and still actively adding features and polish.
Your tut has worked like charm. Thanks so much. Rotate constraints work as desired. However translate constraints are absolutely broken. They simply move haywire when a symbol is moved with a mouse.
Yeah, those constraints are pretty messed up. Also try out the new layer parenting for rigging characters.
@@WhatMakeArt that sounds interesting. Will try asap.
👍
@@WhatMakeArt just saw a tut. Unfortunately layer parenting supports only fk and not ik as with bones.
Bummer, If you're not set on using Adobe Animate and you have After Effects, there is a free plugin called Duik that works great for character looking like this and can do many more things including swapping out artwork on a previously animated rig.
Here is a playlist to get you started
How to Rig a Character with Duik Bassel in After Effects CC: ua-cam.com/play/PL8G4GiXpgTvIysKfGV30KFhpE1_kHbGOW.html
can i ask how do u even seperate the body parts
Use the graphics editing program of your choice and draw them on different layers. I drew this in Adobe Illustrator. You can use Illustrator or Photoshop. You can also draw directly in Animate CC. Just put each part on a new layer and make it into a graphic symbol before using the bone tool. There is a sample file linked in the description. Download that file and experiment with it.
How can I do a full rig turnaround? Do I need to rig each position over and over or can I use the same rig and rotate body positions?
Usually with rigs 8n 2D animation, multiple rigs are required for different poses. Sometimes it is a good idea to draw your character in different positions and create multiple rigs. Rigs are great tools but they will not animate for you.
Thank yous for tutorial. but I wanna asking about some movement. do you know kinetic bone. I am searching but I can't found it. so example if you move down the body, the foot still landing on the ground. its not move follow the body. can you learn me how I can do that?
You can add a ground tool to a rigged character with the DUIK plugin in After Effects. I show how in this video ua-cam.com/video/z24fXpHkzWQ/v-deo.html
I will see if it is possible in Animate CC.
How do you make the Null symbols invisible? Even when I export the animation the tiny white circles with black outline are still visible.
Shaiya - Take a look at the video at 11:42 on how to make the fill of the null circles transparent. If you have black outlines then your nulls might have a black stroke. Make sure you change both the fill and stroke to transparent, not white. Transparent is the box with the red slash through it.
Thank you. Even though I had the fill and stroke set to transparent, the Null dots were showing up anyway. It wasn't the drawn circle shapes that were visible, just the white dots that outline the position of the nulls. The problem was that I had the Nulls set to a GUIDE LAYER, as soon as I set them back to normal they finally became completely invisible. Thanks for helping :)
@@shaiyacoprez2812 Hey, I'm also having this problem but my layers seem to be set correctly (not as a guide)? I'm fairly new to animate, so I must be mistaken, if you're able to explain how to change this, that would be great! :)
If the circles are all the same symbol, then go to your library in Animate CC. Then you can open the library version of the symbol. Select the circle and make the full and stroke invisible. Then the circles won't be visible in the armature or animation.
@@WhatMakeArt Yeah, all the same symbol, they all look like this: imgur.com/a/rnxy5j4 once you click them they shrink (like the one near the left hand)? I can't understand why I cant get rid of them xD Thanks for the fast reply!
How can I cut body part tool name or video plz
The character was made in Adobe llustrator, each body part is drawn on a different layer. You could do this with Photoshop also by Adobe or you could use open source programs such as Gimp or inkscape. Just make sure each thing is on a different layer. The file of the character used in the video is available for download in the description.
@@WhatMakeArt ok thanks bro

Can I code python in animate cc I know it had a script editor back in the day but I haven’t used it in years so some features like the bone tool idk about and some features I don’t remember lol
Animate CC has a JavaScript API for scripting, not python.
Thanks man This video really helped me
By the way is it possible to ease in and ease out the bone's movements at the same time? I tried to do that but I could apply only one of them for each movement
The easing of the armature rigs is pretty crude so you may not be able to ease in and out. You can try the new layer parenting features that may allow you to do that although it is different then the bone tool.
AMAZING
Glad you liked it. Link to File used in tutorial: drive.google.com/open?id=168r...
Which one do you think better? Animate cc bone tool or after effects with Duik Bassel? Thanks.
For doing strictly puppet animation with pieces on different layers, Duik Bassel is much better.
After Effects comes with its own complications and was not designed for character animation, however with Duick you can make some spectacular things.
Animate CC allows you to have frame-by-frame animation integrated with your puppet characters much easier although it is also possible in After Effects.
Neither tool is better than the other, they're are for different things. If you're interested in using the bone tool in Animate CC you should really check out layer parenting which starts to work more like the parenting in Duik and After Effects.
Try them both and see which one gives the effect that you need for the projects that you want to make.
@@WhatMakeArt thanks for your reply :). I just following your tutorial, after I try it, I think animate cc bone tool isn't good enough because of the animate cc doesn't have the pieces on different layers like you said.
When I make 1 mistake or doing other movement for specific part, it's going to be messed up. Hard to fix. Am I right? Or it's because I don't know something?
Thankksss
Much easier to go back and fix and change animations with Duik.
Key frames and the keyframe craft editor are more advanced in After Effects.

Great tutorial - thank you! I have one question: How would i go about making the character appear bigger as he walks across the board (example: car coming towards character) since I cannot scale or skew the shape?
If I wanted to make that effect, I would try to use a camera that could zoom in on the scene. You could also put the character armature in another symbol and then scale that symbol on a separate timeline.
@@WhatMakeArt Thank you so much - I will try both techniques. Really appreciate you responding so quickly :)
Good luck, post a video when your animation is finished 👍

how do you move the bone anchor point once you have placed it?
At 3:29 It explains how to move the anchor points. Use the selection tool to select a graphic that has a bone. Then press Q to be able to move it. You can also move the anchor point at this time and that will move the bone.
@@WhatMakeArt ah! Thanks so much^^

Would love to see some of your animations. Post a link.
Me again - When I export to a gif animation, the null circles still appear. I have made them transparent but they are still appearing as white circle with black border. Any help would be greatly appreciated :)
You might have made the fill color transparent but they could still have a stroke on them. I would bet that there is a stroke on the nulls.
Thanks man
No problem.
Hey, would you Color all the body parts before rigging everything or after ?
each piece should be a graphic symbol so you should be able to update that graphic symbol at any time with different colors. It's probably best to get a general color scheme set up before you make the armature but it should be editable at any time.
can u help me, I still cant use it
Try downloading the example file from the video description and following along with the tutorial
whats the point of the circles? also, do all the pieces have to be on the same layer?
The circles allow you to bend the hands at the wrist in addition to the elbow and shoulders
Each piece needs to be its own symbol in Animate CC so using layers. In your drawing program is a good idea.
I wonder if this would work with horse characters as well
Yes, you just need the right graphics and layer ordering.
Thank you so mucho for this tutorial! I have one doubt: when the head is not a single symbol, it has a symbol mouth and symbol independent eyes because you want to move the mouth for speaking and blink the eyes, what would be the shape of this skeleton in this case?
In that case you have to put all the symbols for the eyes and mouth animations inside one symbol for the head. Then you use the bone tool to make the rig with the head symbol. If you want to animate the eyes and mouth then you double-click the head symbol and go inside that timeline and animate the symbols for the mouth and eyes.
@@WhatMakeArt thank u ^^
How to create null?
It is just a graphic symbol that you duplicate.
thank you so much

Very helpful!!!
I was rigging a simple stick figure at the same time as this, one thing I noticed was that the anchor point at the elbows would move as I moved the stick figure about so not only did the forearms become out of place but I would have to go to each frame you notice something weird and I would have to adjust it manually... Is there a way to make the anchor point more refined and stay on the exact point I told it? Or is it a minor obstacle because of the limitations of the software?
You can use guidelines in your original character sketch to help you align the anchor points more precisely.
thnx for the explanation, but annimate must be one of the buggiest programs I've ever used
Yes, sometimes it can be a bit buggy.

I added the sample file to the video description. See if that file works for you.
Very useful for my upcoming project along with the use of the new Adobe Character Animator.
Post a video of your project, would love to see.
GOD!!!My broo
👍
when I go to use the one tool it tells me I can't use it with groups did I import it incorrectly
You want to make sure each part of your character is a separate graphic symbol that is on a separate layer before you begin the armature rigging process.
What is the use of the null dot ?!
It allows there to be one more joint in the bone rigging chain. If you don't have that there then you can't put constraints on the rotation of the wrist. You can put constraints on the wrist with the null object including the speed of motion and restrictions on the angle of rotation.
What Make Art ok thx another question plz
I am trying to animate a stick figure I make everything from the symbols to the bones but when I move it the width of any part changes until it fades how can I solve this
It is hard to say without seeing your project file. Try downloading the animate project file from the description and see if that works to help troubleshoot. sometimes it's easier to start from the beginning of a stick figure character or other rig if something goes wrong in the process. After you do it a few times it becomes easier. Good luck 👍
Thank you for well paced excelled tutorial. Now I have to condense that into a tutorial for my students to understand =(
Here is a more condensed version of the bone tool ua-cam.com/video/bdT-p61AbWA/v-deo.html
There is also new techniques with layer parenting that can work better than the bone tool depending on which version of Animate CC you are using
@@WhatMakeArtI teach College students here in New Zealand. We use the 20.0 version of Animate CC. This tutorial has given me the opportunity for them to do better Bone structure animations. The problem is teaching it in a class room environment. There is a lot of information to demonstrate and get across. But I feel this would be well worth it for the results they will achieve. Thanks again.
Sounds great, glad it helps
How do you make nulls in Adobe Animate?
There's no such thing as a null in Animate. I use After Effects often so I used that terminology in the video. The null in the tutorial is just a graphic symbol that has a circle in it. You can duplicate that graphic symbol as many times as you need it in your character rig. Then after everything is rigged you can enter into that graphic symbol and make it invisible.
What Make Art Thank you!
very nice! thank you very much! :-D
:)
Does it work with multiple layers?
Yes it does,
Hey
How should I cut the body parts easy ?
Best way is to use a graphics program of your choice, you can use an Adobe product like Photoshop or Illustrator or you can use an open source project like Gimp or Inkscape
Whatever program you use you need to have layers and just draw each body part on a separate layer. You can even use programs on a tablet such as Procreate. Just draw your body parts on different layers and label them
If you already have a body drawn then you have to use the selection tools in one of the graphics programs to select the different body parts, copy and paste them to new layers, and then draw in the parts that are missing behind the other parts
@@WhatMakeArt i aleardy have a body drawn
is there any tutorial for a body drawn?
No specific tutorial for separating body parts of a drawn character, but this video shows how to use selection tools to select part of an image
ua-cam.com/video/72Qjuf7YP3g/v-deo.html
Then after you select each body part, copy and paste it to a new layer. Then you just need to redraw some of the pieces that overlap. It's best to have round edges so you don't notice when the joints move
@@WhatMakeArt it works idk how but it's work thx very much

Yeah, it's a bit complicated ...
*_how do I add null? I can't add null and its not in my library, maybe cause I added my own photoshop work into an animate project_*

@@WhatMakeArt Hopefully I havent lost you. and thank you for responding so quickly. How do I delete a certain bone in rigging when it's too late to just press ctrl-Z?
You generally need to redo the armature
You can use layer parenting in newer versions of animate CC to be able to later edit the relationships
@@WhatMakeArt how do i make it into null tho?
You can be any shape you want. You can make it a square, you can make it a circle, it just needs to be on its own layer as a graphic symbol.
Thank you so much!
This is a feature that is super useful!
So easy to understand
Happy that it worked.
Idk if anyone is having this issue, but when Im animating with the bone tool and making new poses throughout the animation, the body of my rig keeps shifting even though I didnt move anything, Has anyone else experienced this issue or know how to fix this?
Are you rotating it with the free transform tool? I would also check the constraints of the body and pelvis. Hard to say without seeing the file.
What Make Art I am using the free transform tool, I’d be more than happy to send you a video of my issue if you’d like
Sure, I can look at tomorrow morning
@@WhatMakeArt awesome, please let me know how i can contact you and send you the files
The issue is that the armature has spring enabled. Remove all the frames but the 1st frame of the armature. Then click on the armature in the timeline. In the properties panel, uncheck enable spring. Then add new frames for the armature in the timeline. Then you can add new poses by pressing F6. The different poses won't move then unless you pose them.
Why does my Properties panel not offer enable? I have the latest version and Enable is NOWHERE to be found on the bones in Properties. This is not your fault, but nothing renders a tutorial more useless instantly than when the panels don't resemble what your following in the tutorial. I went to Adobe and followed one of their tutorials. Same thing!
I'll take a look with the new 2020 version and make an update for that. in the meantime take a look at this link it's not a whole figure but it is made with the most recent version of Animate. ua-cam.com/video/bdT-p61AbWA/v-deo.html
@@WhatMakeArt Thank you for such a quick response. What I am seeing in the new video is what I have. I see the little switch in the upper right corner of the Joint: Rotation square of the panel. I ran my cursor over it to see if that is the new Enable. Nothing. This is perhaps the first time in my long history with Adobe in which running a cursor over a button or switch of some kind does not reveal what it is.
In the new Animate CC you don't have to click the enable checkbox (it isn't there) just click the constraint checkbox and then you can put rotation constraints on the joint.
@@WhatMakeArt Thanks so much for looking into this and responding. That is very helpful. Now I can get back into my project from which I had been pulled away. Your videos have been very helpful!
Woot, post a link to a video when you are done.
I wish you'd make more animate cc tutorials. You're an excellent teacher👍
I will put some on the list, anything in particular you are interested in?

Wow! Okay, I'm just new to 2d animation and I'm currently learning on my own because that's what I can afford for now. I mostly use videos such as yours, so I guess anything makes a beginner understand the science behind illusion of life that animation is😄
@@BelovedProdigal I will put some more 2D animation videos on the tutorial to do list
@@WhatMakeArt That would be awesome 👌. Thank you very much
