How I ran the NYC marathon with Type 1 Diabetes (and stayed in range during the whole race!)

  • This weekend still feels like a dream to me!! What an incredible experience. In this video I talk through:
-How I prepared for race day (and what went wrong)
-My big low before the race
-What I ate before and during the race and how I bolused
-How often I looked at my blood sugars during the race
-What happened to my blood sugars after the race
Please note-- I'm not an elite runner, nor do I desire to be. I just love running and go at my own pace! For me, running has always been more about getting out there for myself versus trying to be the fastest. I would have likely gone about this day differently had I been trying for a time etc.

This is such an inspirational story! I used to run before I got diagnosed and did a 21km race once, but after getting diabetes I was scared to workout and it was very difficult for me to start again. I did walks and low impact stuff for the first 1.5 years. Now (over 2 years later) I am finally fit again and stronger than ever before! (even though I’m way heavier than before) and I started running this year! I managed 7km last week and it felt great! I was so proud of myself. Maybe I can get to 21km again some day. Also listening to diabetics feels so validating! We do really think about our disease constantly, to keep ourselves alive. No wonder we get exhausted from time to time

Congratulations 🎉 I did the Amsterdam half marathon last month and can relate to so much of what you spoke about, distance running with T1D can be so challenging. Crossing the finish line is the best feeling 😌

Hi Meg! I admire you very much! I'm 52 and have been T1d for 47 years, I have a daughter (also a Megan!) with t1d for 12 years.

So glad I came across your video! I just ran my first trail ultra (50km) and have a road marathon coming up in a few months. Like you, I had a bad hypo the night before and it made me scared about the race, I think mine was nerves that made me low! So interesting to hear the way you managed your BG, I didn’t think about mile/km markers for your nutrition, my method was setting alarms for every hour and eating 40g of carbs within that hour block. So by the time my alarm had gone off I had to have finished the carbs for that hour block, this allowed me to have flexibility on whether I would eat towards the middle or end of the time block depending on how I was trending with my BG. I have a pump and used temp basal mode, through trial and error on long runs I was able to see that with maintaining my desired 40g of carb/hr of nutrition my BG was stable at 45% temp basal rate. I didn’t dose at all for most of my race except when I strayed from my meal plan because I saw some potato chippies and couldn’t help myself 😅 like you I dosed 25% of what I consumed.
In the last 5k my BGs started trending up, it had been many hrs in temp basal mode so I gave myself half a unit to deal with this instead of changing my temp rate. Just thought I’d share what I did in case anyone was exploring the various ways they could do this. I had it all written down in my phone what the plan was because I knew my brain would not be functioning well for diabetes decisions, as on several long runs I was struggling to make smart choices so I recommend having a detailed plan. Some things can’t be helped, but reducing the amount of decisions you have to make made a big difference for me.
I cannot thank you enough for sharing, I felt very alone through the process of trying to do this and I’m sad the algorithm only showed me your video now. It’s wonderful to see T1’s absolutely killing it and sharing it with others ❤️ can’t wait to see what you do next!

This advice is spot on! 100% TIR during a marathon is amazing. Great job!

Well done🎉 great story, I think us T1Ds become great strategists for dealing with blood sugars and life 😊 really related to your feeling when low blood sugar, can feel so anxious and really drained, sometimes takes a while to recover. Luckily don't get many hypos like that any more.

So inspirational! i’ve done several halves but keep playing around with the idea of running a full. NYC seems like it would be an amazing one to do. my biggest concern next to warding off lows is sweating my omnipod’s or dex off. Always a worry for super hot days (of course Nov in NY wouldn’t be) but just long endurance events in general. was that an issue for you?
