Woolich MT09 tuning Pt 11: The MapShare Debacle

  • I've generally been pretty accepting of the "quirks" present with the woolich software. I set out to upload my maps to mapshare and promptly encountered some some things that genuinely leave me scratching my head in wonder.
The expression "Warts and all" applies somewhat to this video. As much as I like the product for what it does there are limits to it and it's not constrained to the software or the documentation.
To sum it up though there is no MapShare for the Yamaha Gen 3 MT09SP and it appears that there is no intention to make it available. You would think that would be something that would be straight forward to find out but Woolich support decided to make it into a bit more of a hassle than I would like.
Finally I mention that I am putting the log file decoder into github to make it available for others. There's a lot of work to do on my part to finish getting the github project set up but at least others will be able to use it and confirm the quality of their own data that they're feeding into the autotune.

I’ve dealt with Rich for both my Gsxr and my new Mt09sp and he’s always been good as gold.

In my experience the measure of support is not how they handle the easy things. It's how they handle the hard things.
It's when the shit realy hits the fan that you work out how good a products support really is.
Such as when one of their advertised features is missing.

I’m 100% sympathetic to all they will be going through in operating their business. But there are some definite communication issues relating to how they handle issues with their software.
Hardware and sales would be reasonably simple to support and in that respect their support has been top notch.
But genuine bugs and feature requests in the software are another matter. How would I even attempt to approach the fact that their formula for ETV is wrong for the mt09 gen 3. No first level software support is going to be able to handle that particularly if they cannot even handle getting the bike model right when dealing with something as simple as a menu item disappearing.
With 30 years of software under my belt I can say that if you have software and customers that you care about then it's important to make sure that your first level support are able to escalate the hard questions without any dramas.
With both the CSV and the map share I had to ask both times for it to be escalated to someone who actually understood the problem before I was able to get a straight answer. That should have been automatic.
In both instances the response was that it's low priority which I can accept.

8 months later, and MapShare is still not working. It doesn't matter to me, but like you I'm basically noticing and keeping track of glitches in the software.
My '22 MT09 also doesn't have MapShare uploading available, but I can download. And surely at some point in the past uploading was once possible, otherwise there wouldn't be MapShares available to download.
I reckon you're right, they just don't care about this feature that much to fix it.

Having emailed the guy Woolwich, he is a supercilious bellend, which means I won't be buying any of their products ever.

They wont care. They're the only people that can handle the current yamaha ecu's.
I have ceased emailing outside of Australian business hours and the service has been fine however i've also stopped asking hard questions.

Has there been any update on this situation? I'm considering their tuning package but I'm somewhat nervous about support.

It's only map share which is where normal everyday people can share their maps. It's not critical because it is something we can do through other means. I was intending to set up something on github to replace it but have been to busy with work. Even if it was available you still need people to develop maps and share them.
If you're planning to DIY it with the full zeitronic setup then you're going to do what I did and you'll end up with the best tune for your bike anyway. No map share needed.
If you're hoping to just buy the logger/programmer then you're going to need a set of fuel maps to load in to match your bike. That is where map share will become important
If you go through all these videos you'll find numerous issues that I've encountered. Most are annoyances like the mapshare and the aweful csv extract. The only major one is the ETV calculation bug that puts all the logged AFR readings up to 2 cells out in autotune.
My log file decoder (on github) fixes the CSV and also the autotune issue and the map share can be replaced by people just sticking their maps on google drive, github or something similar. My exhaust is very unique so my fuel maps aren't much use for anyone else.
Now if your intention is to get a commercial operator to flash the bike with their tune, either pre-prepared (better) or "on the fly" (based on minimal data capture in a few hours), then all the issues become moot. It's their flash, their license keys and their woolich account. Support becomes their problem.

@@davidb3925 Understood. I appreciate your reply. I work at a motorcycle shop and have a brand new DynoJet available to me. I'd be tuning the bike myself over time and can essentially have as much time as needed to be happy with the tune. I am only concerned about getting hung up on something that I don't understand and not having support from Woolich. I don't have any experience with Woolich thus far, and spending ~800 usd on a package and wondering if they will be there for me if needed, doesn't feel great. It is the software I want, so it is the software I will order. We shall see what happens from there... I downloaded your log viewer, thank you for that. I'm sure I'll get to a point where I understand why you created it and then I'll be even more thankful. Take care!

@@MultiReadify I'm personally a data nut. I like data, spreadsheets, plots and graphs which is why I wanted the log file data. In reality a simple can bus data logger would have provided it and I might make one of them one day.
When it comes to the fundamentals I found the software to be solid and reliable.
It's the ancillary stuff like the CSV extracts, their forum, mapshare and even fault code reading where things are either still under development or in various states of abandonment.

@@davidb3925 I've purchased the full tuning kit. Once I get the bung welded I'll get the MT-09SP onto our DynoJet and start the tuning process. Is there any way I can get in contact with you to share ideas/files?

I've got a few flashes done already with updates mostly to the throttle maps and of course AFR, along with everything turned off in the Advanced Settings menu. The MT is running superbly. I'm happy to share maps or other information if you ever see this message and wish to discuss our experiences. Take care otherwise :)
