Oh Adrian, when the crystal is shattered ALWAYS pull the crown to hack the watch. The crown is not going to get broken just put it in a pocket by itself. Even if the stem does break, they are relatively cheap, Cheaper than having the movement ground to bits by sapphire shards :-D
Hey, for my info, do you mean to pull the crown out as if you were to set the time and then leave it in that position until fixed? Ty in advance, but hoping I never need to remember this ...
@@zombyoli3681 Yes, pulling the crown out to the setting position (not the quick-set date position). Getting the movement stopped is crucial. Yep. And even if the crown had to be changed, it would have been better than the damage that letting it run with all that sapphire inside probably caused.
There is no right solution. As the second hand was stuck the watch had stopped. If anything got into the movement it would also stop right away and cause no real damage My biggest issue would be scratching the dial if the hands moved under force due which is likely if the crown was pulled out fully and put in your pocket.

Do not send it to Rolex for service! They will replace parts that don’t need replacing, as you know. And they’ll overcharge you with a smile on their face.
Sorry about the damage. That sucks. To be fair, these damn watches are always expensive. I just dropped $1k on getting my Brosnan Seamaster serviced. Just the nature of the beast.
I get it and you should definitely make the request to Rolex not to polish it. However, even if they do are your memories dependent on a scratch on a watch? If you had lost the watch entirely, would you have also lost all memory or your excursion that day?
No. The watch wasn't attached to anything when it was dropped. If it was on our straps then it would have been perfectly safe, and very likely safer than when it is on the bracelet too.
Leave it, put it in a display case, put it in your office and use it as a reminder of that camping trip and the good times with your boys. It's only a watch and every time you look at it, it'll bring back good memories.
Sorry for the damages to your Explorer II….After watching your video….i brought out my Explorer II and took a good look at it….it’s a beautiful timepiece….hope you get it fixed…and still maintain the “battle scars” that give your Explorer II the character you desire…
Arrr the old scratches mean memories rubbish. Yeah I’ve climbed mountains in a certain pair of socks. They now need replacing shall I keep them for the memories. You see without those socks I can’t recall my memories. Honestly what a load of cobblers. The only refusal for polishing for my tastes is to keep the sharp edges of the watch.
Sorry to hear about the mishap. My old and trusted Orient Mako XL had a similar fall onto a rock while climbing in the Taurus Mountains. The crystal survived, just had a chip on the surface probably because it was mineral, not sapphire which is more prone to shattering. Though it made no sense I took the opportunity to replace it with an AR coated sapphire and it looks great ! I only wear my G-Shock GG-1000 when I go on the mountains now !

Adrian, sorry man this would make me crestfallen. Two days ago I was carrying my Mini Dachshund Molly out for her business. I literally have four steps off my front porch. I had Molly cradled in my left arm, with my beloved Sub Date on my wrist. In a moment of distraction I thought step three was step four. “Down goes Frazier” Down goes Frazier”. Bang the crap out of my knees, back and right hand. But Molly and my Subby were unscathed. Today I feel like a team Rugby Football players tackled me but it was worth it. Stay Calm and carry on. Rolex will revive your Explorer good as new.
Really sorry that happened to you Adrian! I can completely commiserate with you. A similar thing happened to me with my new Speedy, didn’t break the crystal, but I dropped my caseback directly onto the movement and it stopped the movement. I was sad for weeks until I got it back from Omega and it was during the holidays. Luckily it was covered and was fixed within 3 weeks. You’ll be okay once you get it back and you’ll be relieved and it’ll be just another story to tell about your amazing personal watch journey. Cheers mate!
I feel you. It isn't an explorer, but I killed my BB58 in a motorcycle crash a couple weeks ago. The watch and bracelet were so chewed up it isn't worth fixing. I couldn't imagine if it were a Rolex.
Just picked up a black dial (2 year wait AD) - love it. You should replace with a black - has more of a 70s / classic vibe than the white! Hopefully you have watch insurance lol.
I was told by a watchmaker when or if it was to ever happen to your watch , pull out that crown immediately to stop the movement. Very happy my comment made the show. But that is Seiko’s reasoning for having hardlex in their dive watches so the glass wouldn’t shatter ! It’s a proprietary Seiko product does seem to be sweared upon! But not for those who desperately NEED sapphire as to justify a high watch purchase! Companies are using sapphire in watches well under £100 these days so for me!!!! In Seiko we trust!
OK, my opinion probably goes for nothing. Luxury watches are becoming hyper undesirable? Ive had expensive watches and got rid of them all and currently wear a 30 year old issue CWC G10. Ive seen articles on gangs stealing watches from peoples wrists and now a watch dealer from Richmond has died after being robbed. I love them but like Kate Bush said ‘what makes you special makes you dangerous’ and life is too short for that anxiety. I never felt at ease wearing an expensive watch. I have a friend who has a Brietling. It lives in a drawer. ‘Why do you not wear it?’ I asked. His answer, its a bit too flash. Please discuss!
A perfect example of why I hate how ubiquitous the term “tool watch” is. It’s thrown around so much. Quartz and mineral crystals are a must for a “tool watch”.
Ach dinna worry Adrian. It’s an Explorer, supposed to take a good whack now and then. My 1655 took a big hit at work, smashed the acrylic and damaged a hand or two (including mine). Off to the Rolex hospital in Singapore and returned working perfectly. That was in 1990 and it’s still going strong.
It’s about the only time I wear my Apple Watch other than running so I can listen to music. I like having all trails help guide me via the trail map that’s always on without having to whip out my phone. Cheapest Apple Watch with LTE is perfect for outdoor use. Other than that I never wear my Apple watch and my Rolexes get the time they deserve.
Sad to hear. I hope it isn't as catastrophic as you fear. Likely just a tear down and clean out, with a new glass, naturally. Shouldn't be beyond salvaging, for sure. Good news within bad, I REALLY liked that racing livery B&J nato you showed. I also have a Polar Exp II which it would look great on, buuuut I also have a very similar looking Aqua Terra, which would benefit. Perfect summer strap for both!
And this is why Casio is the brand chosen by true explorers and mountaineers. Other brands are Luminox and Suunto. A famous sailor was a Rolex ambassador. When he retired from his adventures, he confessed he used a 50 dollar Casio.
I'm so sorry to hear about your accident, Adrian. I have admired your watch from across the pond for quite some time now, and I very much look forward to seeing it back in action. I also have a business question for you: which of your strap colorways would go well with the black Explorer II. I imagine they will be different than the ones you show with your polar. Cheers.
Sooo sorry to hear about this, yet a new story, your story about a man and his watch. That Explorer II is amazing but would you feel worse if it were your Explorer? Hope the mend is swift and good. I had my DeepSea serviced last year and yes they did in fact leave its character in place while turn around was just about 6 weeks. Mine was within warranty thankfully and it’s better than new performance wise.
Hopefully you can get it fixed, but documenting the repair (if not sent to Rolex) will be a great feature. I think the memories are in your head, seeing your kids play & laugh, rather than the the scrapes on the watch. Go get it looking splendid again.
Acrylic would have defintely scratched, but may have stayed intact. Lucky the Rolex didn't bounce into the loch, that would have required a new dial too!
Ah, yes. The premium sapphire crystal that won’t scratch, but will not only fail to protect your watch, but damage it so much worse when it shatters into a million microscopic pieces.
Sorry to hear about this, A. But also great to see someone getting out into the wild with their tool watch and using it as it was meant to be used. Expensive mistake but war scars & good stories are priceless.
I feel your pain. After 18 years of flawless service in all manner of conditions throughout the world (Antartica, scuba diving, rain forests, cave exploration, class 3-4 rapids, as well as renovating my home) my Explorer met its match....my kitchen floor! Crystal smashed, shards everywhere in the interior, dial scratched. The restoration would be in excess of $1,000. A Rolex technician in N.Y. fully repaired it in about 8 weeks; 2 weeks shorter if the dial was not replaced. Now I had my Explorer fully polished before being returned. But I did this to honor the watch, not my memories. To each his or her own, of course!
So sorry to hear this, Adrian, but it’ll be very interesting to see how the repair goes, and what options you have. If you had to see this happen to one watch in your collection, how near the bottom of the list would this have been? Kermit below it? Is the Explorer I your daily watch in the meantime, or does this help justify pressing ‘go’ on a new addition?
I always tell my friends that if you need to immediately change your straps on your $10k watch, make sure you do it over jagged rocks.

Do not send it to Rolex for service! They will replace parts that don’t need replacing, as you know. And they’ll overcharge you with a smile on their face.
Well, it’s not a vintage watch, is it? As long as Adrian stipulates ‘do not polish’ on the service sheet, he should be ok
I owned a Tudor chrono panda for 2 years now and I still love it & proud of it!
Don't take expensive watches into the wilderness. Take a decent Seiko. Same happened to me with my Tag
It’s people actually buying into the marketing that it’s a rugged tool watch 😂
Did the watch slip off the nato strap? Could this have been saved if it was on the stock bracelet?
Getting a watch polished does not remove the memories you've made with that watch.
It kind of does ….
I disagree
Arrr the old scratches mean memories rubbish.
Yeah I’ve climbed mountains in a certain pair of socks. They now need replacing shall I keep them for the memories.
You see without those socks I can’t recall my memories.
Honestly what a load of cobblers.
The only refusal for polishing for my tastes is to keep the sharp edges of the watch.
Love nkuwan the way you show it! You really focus on showing off the bag. I don't think any other UA-camr can show off bags in as much detail as you.
I take G-shock only for hiking and sports
Sorry to hear about the mishap. My old and trusted Orient Mako XL had a similar fall onto a rock while climbing in the Taurus Mountains. The crystal survived, just had a chip on the surface probably because it was mineral, not sapphire which is more prone to shattering. Though it made no sense I took the opportunity to replace it with an AR coated sapphire and it looks great ! I only wear my G-Shock GG-1000 when I go on the mountains now !
Next time wear a g-shock
You don’t wear a g shock when you have Rolex daily wear money lol but I see your point
@@CaptainSpud80 my daily is a rolex explorer and datejust. But I wear my g-shock whenever i go camping. i dunno but i feel a shock is more suited with that kind of environment. but i guess whatever makes you happy, you wear what you want. have a great day.
Grow up
That is a bummer but, like you said, it's a new memory. Here's to speedy repairs and returns.
Ah the advantages of the old rolex plastic crystals
I’m sorry for your loss Adrian. I have been thinking about getting a Rolex, but hey! My Seiko is cool enough!
Confirmation you don’t remove a Rolex bracelet to put Micky Mouse straps on.
A bit boring that, no? 😆
He does to take fucking pictures for instagram so he can sell them.. serves him right for fucking around
@@daniellongbottom9063 You seem pretty mad 😂
Haha mickey mouse straps sent me
Just done the same Adrian. What was the cost of the repair??😬😬
Sorry to hear that Gary. It’s came to about £750. Doing a detailed video on it right now. If you don’t get it polished, it saves a lot of money and time. Good luck.
@@BarkandJack Thanks for that Adrian tbh was expecting more. Still not happy about it but such is life. Cheers
"omega" on the rock. Hilarious. It took a moment to realize what was going on there. 😂
Cheers mate!
this is the reason why you wear a beaterwatch like a gshock or seiko when out in nature ☝️ i would never wear my explorer I climbing.. not even hiking
So it's not an Explorer, but a "couch Potato".
@@ea3527 imo a good everyday office watch 😉
That very weird. that crystal should be strong enough to take that impact of dropping it. Maybe temperature was a factor too.
Keep your luxury watches for nice dinners, meetings and anything else delicate. Everything else slap a G shock on
😂😂😂😂😂😂damn that's gonnna hurt a few feelings
It says 'explorer' but can't actually 'explore' 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
It’s about the only time I wear my Apple Watch other than running so I can listen to music. I like having all trails help guide me via the trail map that’s always on without having to whip out my phone. Cheapest Apple Watch with LTE is perfect for outdoor use. Other than that I never wear my Apple watch and my Rolexes get the time they deserve.
Sapphire glass is so tough? was it mineral?
BS
Sorry to hear this. I did just comment just a few videos ago that rolex is not a sports watch. It is marketed as one and that’s about it
No one cares
You did cause you clicked and commented lol
@@garylangford6755haha classic.. I see people all the time say this yet they clicked and commented. 😊
How badly was the rock damaged?
In EU it's 850 eur for the gmt service without extra parts.
That Omega rock name at 1:47 is soooo hilarious man 😄😄
Hopefully you will manage to get it fixed though
Anyone who says “Oh it’s just a watch” doesn’t know the connection that can form with a watch.
Cheers.
The best strap is the one that you think suits it the best! You can't go wrong with a grey strap though (from any of our ranges).
how did the watch fell of your hands ???
Just had a similar incident with my Milgauss during the week and chipped the edge of the crystal. Now waiting on an estimate for the repair!
Are you planning on releasing more 3 minute Friday videos ?
So sorry to hear this, hope it can be fixed.
wait. dropping from what i assume to be waist height, on to a rock, and it shatters?
lmao. so much for EXPLORER
Any thoughts on the Paul Thorpe/Oisin O Malley drama ?
Ugh, what’s Oisin done now? I unsubscribed from his channel ages ago, he’s just too full of himself!
@@jonathanharvey2156 He is gone political.....and acusing Paul of all sorts, check some of their videos.
Sorry to hear about it. Atleast it will make a great story one day packed with memories! Hopefully the repair isn’t too bad!
My friend was charged almost £3,000 by Rolex for exactly the same thing - so be prepared mate....
Bro my Seiko could survive that fall. I don’t understand how a rock could break sapphire crystal from 2 ft high.
The exact poetic reason why Kikuo Abe cooked up G-shock.
