Will B totally. The way we're going, V8s will be illegal some day. We should enjoy them while we can. Ford should have kept the v8 and put the Shelby gt350 setup with 6 speed manual for those seeking more power.
New power train sucks. 10 speed trans spends half the time hunting gears. If you drove one you would know right away the 6 speed is way better for both on and off-road.
I just picked up a 2011 Raptor SVT supercab last week. It has 50k miles, never been off road, always garages, and I Love the 6.2L V8. The previous and only other owner put in a flowmaster 40 and it growls beautifully. Looks brand new, feels brand new and I only spent 26k. New Raptors are ridiculously expensive...82k.
I have to agree. Even with the 2017 being better in so many ways I have to stick by the V8. It makes me wonder just how many sales they've lost from not having the V8 option. I know 2 people who bought the Power Wagon over the new Raptor specifically because of the V8. Thanks for the awesome content on your channel!
As someone who daily drove a 17’ scew cab, 802a package, flawless with an Afe magnum intake and an awesome corsa catback, I can tell you the 6.2 is the better truck. I traded in the 17’ on a 2014 scew cab with 113,000 miles versus the 17’ with 70000. The truck sounds better, it’s built better (steel), and is overall more cost effective and a hell of a lot more bad ass. If you’re a v8 truck lover like me, you’ll never regret finding a used 6.2. Not to mention that the engine is one of fords most brilliant works with reliability and the six speed transmission reliability.
X2! I just threw on a supercharger and 3.0 fox shocks on my 2013. 600hp 500tq the new raptor can eat my dust. Plus old raptor still sounds and looks like a raptor not a ecoboost f150 with raptor badge and fancy grille lights lol Truth is I love ecoboost f150’s they’re damn good trucks, and new raptor would be on my drive way if it had a v8 and the ford engineers didn’t focus on all the wrong things. People weren’t complaining about the raptor so why not leave it the hell alone throw in a lighter stronger body, offer a supercharged option, leave the transmission alone and don’t mess with the looks too much. Can I get an amen or am I just off here!? Lol
Good choice on keeping the old Raptor. If someone was in the market for a Raptor and has never owned one, then i'd say get the new one. If you currently own a '12+ then keep it. I look forward to more long term reviews and more Raptor rescues!
This new engine is badass. I was up to 18mpg in mine up until I hit 1000 miles, in which case I brought it down to 16.5 with lots of hard accelerations.
Any morning that I wake up with a notification to a new TFL truck video is a good day. Thank you, guys. I wish someone would sponsor you to build up your 6.2 with a supercharger or twin turbo setup and see how well that 3.5 holds up. Heck, I'd love to hear that v8 with a big, lumpy cam set and full exhaust, too. ;)
guy proulx Yeah, it got a penis reduction, went from 4" to 2". 🍆🥕 But, that's not the worst thing. The worst thing is the upfront price added to the cost to repair an overly complex V-6 and 10 speed transmission. Lease it and take it to the dessert and run the hell out of it.
guy proulx Well, I'm certainly not going off road because of my back. My Tundra is 4x4, but an Urban package. These full size off-roaders have limited uses and I'm not a fan of any. The Raptor is way to wide for anything short of desert areas, the other full size have similar issues. Where I live they'll all be scratched to death from brush. In the mountains where I use to live, there's no way they are going on jeep trails for the same reason, they're too wide and long. That leaves desert running. Jeeps, LC, small pickups are way more versatile and fit in your garage. When Ford enters back in with the Ranger, will see a great deal of competition. We'll see what happens then. I'm sure the Taco will remain the best selling no matter what. Good times ahead for the midsize truck market ahead.
Troy Strain Yep i agree, i still have my old '89 for the tight trails and my old Tundra isn't as big as the newer ones and goes almost anywhere i need to go, smaller is always king off road
As a new time buyer I really want the newer Raptor. I totally get the feeling about the V8 and man that purr is seductive. I think if I had the older Raptor I probably would keep it longer as well. It's still so good that there is very little reason to change it for the newer one.
Well, one problem with the new Raptor not having a winch, you couldn't do any more Raptor Rescues! NNOOO! :( Question: When you showed the new Raptor going down that steep hill and scraping the exhaust, can it climb that hill? You've shown the Power Wagon climbing some crazy-steep hills, but never show the other trucks climbing the same hills. Can they?
+F-150 KING OF TRUCKS New 66rfe and 68rfe transmissions are pretty reliable. Chrysler had many problems in the past but, no worse than Ford did with their junk E40D and 4R100. And really, I'll bet the 66rfe will be more reliable than that complicated 10 speed spring load clock that Ford is now using.
+F-150 KING OF TRUCKS "Great reviews" doesn't mean reliability. The ZF gets "great reviews" for its smoothness and smart shifts, but it's an unreliable POS for truck duty.
Once upon a time I totally built a 96 F150 4x4 into what at that time would have been what Ford would have done to make a Raptor. The 2010-2014 trucks remind me of that build and if i were to buy one i would have a really hard time not to purchase one. However, the 2017 version is awesome very hard choice.
I feel the same way. When it comes time for me to up grade my truck, I am going with the first gen Raptor. Yes the new one is better but, you can not replace that V-8 rumble
Chevys coming out with one. It's going to have 25 inch spinner wheels, low profile tires and a gold grill. It's going to be called the Chevy Rapper. 😜😂
cadillacphxful Hell, I seen them on an Anthony Bourdain episode last year when he visited Houston. Chevy going retro with spinners and purple drank. Pass the blunt, Pooky.
I’ll volunteer mine! Whipple 2.9 supercharger, long tube headers, corsa exhaust. Sounds freakishly amazing under WOT while not scaring other drivers under normal driving.
Jay Trock What are you talking about. The v6 is a cleaner engine than the v8, and furthermore, the EPA is rolling back new regulations. The new truck is _objectivly better_ in every single metric except exhaust note. And you have to have a mighty small penis to keep a truck just for that.
I’m looking into getting a first gen raptor . I have 4 V8 vehicles at the moment and would love to get the 6.2 raptor soon . I just can find low miles one here in Colorado
THANK GOODNESS!!! I so had my fingers crossed and hoped that you would keep that old V8 Raptor... WOOHOO!!! I JustLOVE and prefer the mighty sound of a V8.
The new Raptor is not bulletproof like the old Raptor is. That’s the biggest issue. There are people out there still driving first gen Raptors with 300K miles on them with very little problems. I just don’t think the new version will fare as well.
Is the Gen 1 wider? Something about it’s look head on stands out even at a glance. The gen 2 I kinda have to do a double take to make sure it’s a raptor. I love both trucks tho.
Another bad thing about turbos is they should come with a turbo timer original equipment but they never do. What a turbo timer does is it let the engine idle for 5 minutes before it shuts off you can go to the hot rod shop though and get one installed. And that will help save a lot of turbos. Turbos are driven off of your exhaust and your exhaust is real hot. And if you shut off your engine constantly with a hot Turbo it won't last
Kinny Bingman that's funny. I've had turbo cars and a turbo diesel truck all my life. I haven't had trouble with or replaced anything in 200k plus miles on each vehicle. u must be thinking of turbos from the 70's. oh and I use synthetic and only change oil every 10k miles
I'm really surprised that all that extra electronics and two turbos only gives you an extra 3 mpg. I wonder if you drove it slower and in a higher gear on the highway if the mpg would shoot up drastically. I'm also curious about mpg from both of them when towing.
Just recently traded in my Gen 1 for a new Gen 2 Raptor. After 1500 miles, I can honestly say I wouldn't change a thing. The power and speed is unbelievable for a truck, all while getting 17+ mpg. Whereas my old raptor wouldn't do better than 11 mpg witb noticeably less power.
cant lie the blue ford did sound better. to me at least. but i really want to see all that tech in a ranger. im not a ford guy but lets be honest. competition makes you better so lets watch ford and chevy or who ever keep competing for our effections. but we weed the rivalry
I think the Reaper is Chevys version and competes with the Raptor but I dont know if they still make them or if they were only a special edition for a limited time.
The V8 sounds like a old muscle car. It’s just cool. Plus, turbos can overheat and the ecoboost engine (as great as is it) has more parts and things going on. V8 is simpler, been around longer, which means , statistically, a lower probability chance of engine or transmission issues. (Of course, the best vehicle is the one well maintained, no accidents etc etc) And personally, I don’t like things like push start, and an aluminum frame. I want a real key Bc it’s way easier and cheaper to replace. I had to replace an 2011 Infiniti key for $300. And a guy had to come to my house to program it. I want steel frame so my truck doesn’t get ripped up in a 10mph fender bender (watch steel vs aluminum f150 crash test video) My steel framed 2014 FX4 V8 saved my life in a bad hit and run accident. Driver turned the wrong way down a one way and floored it straight at me. I barely dodged him and he hit the front corner, slid along the driver side, ripped off my back axle, the wheel and bumper. We walked away without a scratch thank god. I’m now looking to replace it with another 2014 fx4 or raptor. V8 steel body is basically a reliable, off-road tank.
I got the Gen 1, because it is much beefier looking than the Gen 2. I am a fan of the Gen 1 since it's inception. They are both nice and anybody is a lucky duck to have one. But my heart is with the Gen 1 as well❤💯
Dont care my 2017 Raptor has a v6, its better in every way and has zero issues ripping those 35s loose on dry pavement. Ill take the new tech and better everything over exhaust note any single day of the week.
If it had more power, yes. But would I a take a 4cyl turbo that put out more tq and HP than a turbo 5.0? Indeed I would. I dont give a hoot how many cylinders it has as long as it has more power.
Torsen front diff in my Raptor is better than the locking front diff in the Gen1 Raptor, FYI. You can also put a winch on the front of the Gen2 Raptor just have to get an intercooler relocation kit which is readily available from Full Race or ADD.
You can make 1000hp 4 cylinder turbo if you want, but at what cost? You think all that complexity and high internal stresses aren't without drawbacks? No, it makes an engine less reliable over the long run and more expensive to fix when it does break. N/A engines did not just hit a horsepower wall, making it time for turbocharged engines to take over or something, they're just being forced out by phony targets set up by government regulators. In reality, Ford's progression of the V8 has stalled. GM makes more powerful and fuel efficient engines, and they're doing it without complicated turbocharging.
The only thing letting down the 2017 truck is the engine choice. I'm sure the 6.2 with the 10 speed auto would get similar MPG to the 3 5 Eco boost. Still less MPG but way more durable and massively less complicated long-term. That's why I'm looking for a 2013.
Ordered mine 1/09/2017 ford is taking there sweet time by waiting to build it. I still haven't gotten a VIN just a DOR saying the manufacturer has received the order.... Projected build date for me is 3/20...
That's crazy I'm trying to be as patient as possible I'm just so excited!!! I'm glad to hear its worth the wait. Like Roman I'm keeping my Gen 1 hopefully I can get Whipple supercharger to keep up with the Gen 2
I'm glad you're keeping your blue raptor. The V8 omission is a mistake by ford. Interesting if the old raptor V8 went in the aluminium/10 speed model, I think it would do much better! V8 all the way!
hmmm.... Only a handfull of poeple understand WHY u buy a Ford Raptor and not any other truck(be it faster, more torquy, more anything....). Puting that ecoboost engine on that truck and ...u know... not giving at least the V8 option was a very bad idea! I would like to know if the sales are going as expected by ford.
Papy Pypa+. you are correct. I have 2013 Raptor and I wanted a new one but I will wait until the V8 version comes out. Ford will figure it out like when they switched from 5.4 to 6.2.
Can't help but notice that the old one has a 6.2L badge and new one doesn't have a 3.5L badge. My SUV has a 3.5L badge but that's because it's not embarrassing on an SUV. The styling is nice in the new one, I'll give them that.
I have to agree with this video. I love FORD and raptors, but the engine note of a V6 really kills it for me. If I had the money and means I would buy the 2017 and drop a v8 in it. That's the perfect truck. They should at least offer a limited run of v8s
Keeping the old Raptor is a good choice for what it is used for. The winch placement problem on the new Raptor is the deal breaker for me. Also the overhangs and approach and departure angles seem worse in the new truck.
Mustafa Khuzaima they won't compare. We have. 2017 TRD pro and my neighbor has a 1st gen raptor. The tundra only looks better the Ford will beat it in anything
very important thing you said " these Turbo's need cold air to function right"!!! did Ford engineers' considered hot climate countries when they did the new raptor? specially, Middle East where there is always sand storm and 100+ climate? thanks,
the old one looks better than the new one. the only things i like of the new raptor are the cab and how the hood opens. they should of put the 6.2 in it. i wonder if the sound of the new 5.2 would go well with the raptor or a regular f150.
Dealer showed me the 2018....with all the bells and whistles and I stopped when he clicked the buttons and the tailgate dropped down. He then took me to the 2014 and I was sold. I need a v8....and a regular non automated tailgate. And a cheap car note....under a grand ;) also I don’t need to replace turbos every few thousand miles
Put a twin turbo on the 6.2 v8 and game over man. No replacement for displacement
Zoeth more than 900 hp.
F1 engines: Are we a joke to you?
game over to ur gear box, as 6R80 pretty weak.... welcome to burned clutch and destryed parts which will destroy ur transmission
I totally agree with Roman. There's still a place in the world and my heart for a V8 pickup. Hopefully they stay around well into the future.
Will B totally. The way we're going, V8s will be illegal some day. We should enjoy them while we can. Ford should have kept the v8 and put the Shelby gt350 setup with 6 speed manual for those seeking more power.

Three more reasons to keep the old one: better departure angle, you have a winch, and you can get a longer long-term review out of it.
They dont mention the rattle on startup ,and the weak oil pump pressure and the Cam Phasers failure and tune flaws on the 2018
Get a rousch supercharger kit for the blue one. Bring the power and torque up to around 600 for both
I think the Reaper is Chevys version and competes with the Raptor but I dont know if they still make them or if they were only a special edition for a limited time.
From this camera angle it looks like the old Raptor has more ground clearance up front. Is that true?
The V8 sounds like a old muscle car. It’s just cool.
Plus, turbos can overheat and the ecoboost engine (as great as is it) has more parts and things going on.
V8 is simpler, been around longer, which means , statistically, a lower probability chance of engine or transmission issues. (Of course, the best vehicle is the one well maintained, no accidents etc etc)
And personally, I don’t like things like push start, and an aluminum frame. I want a real key Bc it’s way easier and cheaper to replace. I had to replace an 2011 Infiniti key for $300. And a guy had to come to my house to program it.
I want steel frame so my truck doesn’t get ripped up in a 10mph fender bender (watch steel vs aluminum f150 crash test video)
My steel framed 2014 FX4 V8 saved my life in a bad hit and run accident.
But my heart is with the Gen 1 as well❤💯
So you are keeping old blue eh? Is that because it has a rear diff-lock and the new one doesn't?
What can you do in the new raptor that you cannot do in the old raptor (off-road)
The new Fox Shox are not just bigger, they have more zones (quintuple internal bypass vs. triple internal bypass).
What looks noticeable is that it appears that the new Raptor has less ground clearance than the old one under the front skid plate. Is that true?
why not comparing to 2017 raptor 5.0 V8 not the 3.5 eco then ??
Great comparison video guys. Thanks!
on the new raptor what cab does it have to have to have the max towing compacity
I can't believe I'm gonna say this but the new one sounds a bit nice
Bahahahahahaha!
When will the 7.3L be available in the new Raptor? 😝🤘
Dont care my 2017 Raptor has a v6, its better in every way and has zero issues ripping those 35s loose on dry pavement. Ill take the new tech and better everything over exhaust note any single day of the week.
I'd take the winch fully locking front diff and the v8 any day
If it had more power, yes.
There isnt any turbo lag on the new 3.5 HO. Move the intercooler with a relocation kit and you can have a winch. Pretty simple fix.
V8 baby
The only thing letting down the 2017 truck is the engine choice.
I'm sure the 6.2 with the 10 speed auto would get similar MPG to the 3 5 Eco boost.
Still less MPG but way more durable and massively less complicated long-term.
That's why I'm looking for a 2013.
Ordered mine 1/09/2017 ford is taking there sweet time by waiting to build it. I still haven't gotten a VIN just a DOR saying the manufacturer has received the order.... Projected build date for me is 3/20...
TJ Parker Ordered mine back in September 2016 and it finally came in two weeks ago. Hang in there, it's worth the wait!
That's crazy I'm trying to be as patient as possible I'm just so excited!!! I'm glad to hear its worth the wait. Like Roman I'm keeping my Gen 1 hopefully I can get Whipple supercharger to keep up with the Gen 2
Excuses, excuses, I would (will) take the new one in a second. Suckers...
I think Romans summary is a very good point..like by most measurable ways the new is better but the old has that special X factor
Looking at buying a 2014 but prices are insane! Does anyone know what a reasonable price is for a 70k mile super crew?
I'm glad you're keeping your blue raptor. The V8 omission is a mistake by ford.
Interesting if the old raptor V8 went in the aluminium/10 speed model, I think it would do much better!
V8 all the way!
Honest review and I love my V8, it’s got soul
Well said.. Im planning on putting a 305 v8 on a little truck I own.. Getting that V6 out of there..
Can't help but notice that the old one has a 6.2L badge and new one doesn't have a 3.5L badge. My SUV has a 3.5L badge but that's because it's not embarrassing on an SUV. The styling is nice in the new one, I'll give them that.
Mike Coffin that's a great observation. The martking team realized that was nothing to market for, the engineering team didn't.
It’s also why instead of him saying it sounds like garbage for a truck he instead said “it has its own unique sound” he’s nice
True
The new raptor sounds like a lawnmower
Douwe Kruizenga i wish my lawn mower sounded like that
I have to agree with this video.
Doesn't the new truck have an awd mode where you can use 4x4 on dry pavement
Kazak Thranduil yes I think so and the old one could but the new I think has a actual mode for it
should show us what the exhaust sounds like inside vs outside
didnt they do this already ? this man LOVES ford lol.
so when is the tundra trd vs raptor coming ?
Mustafa Khuzaima they won't compare. We have. 2017 TRD pro and my neighbor has a 1st gen raptor. The tundra only looks better the Ford will beat it in anything
hey can you guys offroad the Toyota FJ cruiser
Haven't you people ever heard of the Syclone and Typhoon? V6 turbo trucks are nothing new. They were faster than V8 trucks back then, just as now.
I am referring to all the V6 haters here.
very important thing you said " these Turbo's need cold air to function right"!!!
did Ford engineers' considered hot climate countries when they did the new raptor?
specially, Middle East where there is always sand storm and 100+ climate?
thanks,
the old one looks better than the new one. the only things i like of the new raptor are the cab and how the hood opens. they should of put the 6.2 in it. i wonder if the sound of the new 5.2 would go well with the raptor or a regular f150.
Good comparison. I thank you. It helped with my decision.
Wow, 69 views in 3 minutes in the middle of the night! Well done!
Its 13:25 (1:25 pm) here in Poland =)
They should have had side pipes to help avoid 9:08 like the older lightning.
Please make lightning replacement. Ford...Please.
Are you sure money is not the reason you are keeping the old raptor?
+joshua Maneely money is always a factor
My uncle has a new raptor and it set him back over 70k
Yeah there really expensive my dad has one and I’ve had to help him a couple time with the monthly payments every now and then
Which one is more reliable
The 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor is my dream 4WD 😍👌
You made the right choice Sir
Raptor time baby ;) Toss me the keys I'd be glad to take the new one of your hands...
go to cliffhanger with these two
Dealer showed me the 2018....with all the bells and whistles and I stopped when he clicked the buttons and the tailgate dropped down. He then took me to the 2014 and I was sold. I need a v8....and a regular non automated tailgate. And a cheap car note....under a grand ;) also I don’t need to replace turbos every few thousand miles
Cool vid, but I actually prefer the looks of the old raptor. The new one is a better truck, particularly since it gets reasonable mpg.
Love the ecoboost but the 2018 5.0 should be an option
