Oh man, its been nice here the last few days, but it froze last Monday, and was about 90 a day or two before that. LoL! This week, not even 70 out, nothing but beautiful even with a small rain interruption!

Awesome, love how you had the patience to persevere and fix all those leaks, my 1641 had two studs pull out once it sounded like a bad exhaust leak 😂 few helicoils later it was repaired
Case savers were invented to prevent exactly that, it was a way to put and much heavier and taller thread into the magnesium case to prevent pullouts. I'm glad you got that sorted! This one is fixed now too!
Waw! I just can't believe the carlessness of some people to not do any maintenance and let their things decay to such a degree!! I am always impressed of the enormous knowledge you have of these cars. You always make it look easy. Take the credit you deserve Duckman, you're good at what you do. Hey, did you adjust the valves on the Beetle??
Yeah the previous, owner is the one that left it in that condition for the new guy to find... but not only did I adjust the valves, but I said I was going to, I just didn't cover it because I've done that video enough times on video, and the video was already over an hour long LOL

Amazing these things can run like that? From my way back memory with mine 65 bug I heard a crazy noise one day and found the cylinder fire was melting one side of my spark plug and the head was pretty much toast. Although at the time didn't think about trying to put in a repair threaded insert? Anyway, took my blown up 68 bus engine head and put it on with washers under the rocker arm bolts to raise it up to get compression and adjust the valves. It worked proving how you can make these run with rubber bands if needed. haha

Why one of the hols are offset in the flywheel . Thats for you get the same position after a balancing. The hols should match the flywheel and the crank. So it not could be missbalans
Thanks, and that would be a great observation. But the crank and the flywheel were not balanced together, so that blows your theory out. Hehe! Thanks man!
Well, in your case you may be removing the cylinders entirely and putting new seals on the bottom end. You'll have to go a little deeper than I did. Also check to make sure its not the pushrod tubes. Hehe!
Also you can check if the washers under the head nuts that are located inside the rocker area under the valve cover are sealed. When assembling a motor it helps to put a little bit of sealant under them to insure no oil seepage through there that reflects in between the head and the cylinder area. It can be plainly seen.

have you seen those adapter things or whatever they're called it allows you to use a torque wrench with a wrench/spanner? I've no idea if they are any good or not plus there will always be someone that says you are adding in variables so it wont be accurate lol
Hey Duckman, I have the same torque wrench and it won't click on a low settings. It will if I try on 90 ft lbs on my truck lugs. Does that mean it is bad or just needs reset? Can you do a video on how you caleribated yours? Thanks for all you do.
I'm actually working on that video right now! The small click is usually so small you don't even notice it... gotta be super observant, it about clicks the moment you touch the wrench.

I probably should service it. Any advice on what to look for? Do they have a filter like domestic vehicles? Thought you might have serviced one or two before. I don't know if I would trust that rooster. Lol. Good thing it's talons are gone. 🤪. 🦆. Noel
Oh man, I know so little about VW automatics, other than a little trivia and what works with what I really don't know much else about them. Last summer I removed an auto from a Type-3, you can find some videos of that up here. But yes, don't trust the roo-bag... he's a disaster in the making and would shred my face off if he was given the chance. Yesterday he bit onto my shirt and wouldn't let go, if that were skin he surely would have done some damage.
Are you going to move into a shop of your own? I think you have a lot of knowledge that people need to work on their own stuff! Loving the how too vids and how not too also! Either way keep up the amazing work you do!

It should have happened by now, buy you know what happened to properly cost, the value of the dollar, and 2020 which was exceptionally special. That depends on who you are, lol... I had a recent post about this somewhere on social media. A friend of mine put his pulley on wrong and missed the keyway, then tightened it with am impact and destroyed the pulley. Apparently that was my fault, he blamed me, yet I never touched a thing, I never even told him to put the pulley on wrong. LoL! I use an impact to quickly wind it on, then a torque wrench to cinch it up to spec. But don't listen to me.... lol! This has become a big joke in our local circles.
I think the internals will be just fine, that's some of that strange science stuff that people say on the internet... like I talked about in this very video!

Anytime you overheat it, assume the heads are loose, things will stretch. The heads should stay tight for a very long time under normal conditions. But if you're paranoid, do it anytime you take the engine out.
The head are going to keep working themselves loose. The remains of those heaterboxes are soaking heads with exhaust heat. They must be complete with cool air flowing through them in order to avoid this. Otherwise j tubes and heat shields must be used in place of them (like vw designed for the thing).
I'm just referencing what the vw enginners did. Industrial shields were deemed nessary to protect the heads from the exaust manifold heat. J tubes and shields are cheap, and I would have really pushed that config to the customer. Maybe you did, and they said no? I don't know. But, it should be worth mentioning, as a lot of people look to you videos (myself included) for how-to stuff.
@@PWB87 all you got to do is watch my other videos where I fabricated industrial tins, I know why they're necessary with J tubes, but these are not J tubes. If anything else without the tins it will hweat up your oil, but they're NOT going to loosen your heads. Especially in this case, because it actually has cooling fins on the exhaust which will make them dramatically cooler in the airstream, and will actually further cool cylinders 1 and 3, as was intended when the heater box was still intact. I just bet this arrangement wasnt tested by VW engineers, they never expected the jackets to rot off of them.

Otherwise, vw Things would have had significantly hotter head temps, no? With the cases rotted away, is it any better? Who knows, like you said it's probably never been tested... This would also depend on driving style though. Stop and go traffic probably wouldn't provide adequate airflow across the fins. And when you park the residual heat just radiates right up to the heads. Intact heater boxes, or j tubes with shields would have been a better choice.
Oh it's well known those heater boxes draw heat away from those cylinders, and I could even tell you first hand because when the heater hose comes off, that side overheats! Its gotta have a draft!
That was done before I got a hold of this car. I don't know who did it, nor why. But its fixed now! I'll be doing a removal on my 56 Beetle in the near future, however. Throw me a subby, and watch for it! Thanks man!

for valve cover gasket ? You can use fifth wheel grease . Just a tiny bit . Last forever . Apply only on the gasket . Then put gasket where it go . You do not want fifth wheel in engine

The misaligned dowels are so the fly wheel is indexed to the crank the same, if you balance the assembly that is important
Already discussed in another comment.... the thing is though, these assemblies are not balanced together. But it would make sense if they were.

If installed properly nothing should get loose, lol... maybe it was some racing application, those guys like to safety wire all kinds of stuff.

Not necessarily, those are less susceptible to heat stresses, they aren't threaded directly into magnesium.

Thanks man. I know you're trying to help, but to remind you... I've been doing this almost 20 years now! This has become my "job" and I am successful at it while it earns me a living. I may not have 1mil subs, but I didn't need them either, so I don't care who is a hater nor why, most of them have problems of their own and don't make a whole lot of sense anyway. I just can't fix crazy nor stupid so I'm not gonna try... SO LET'S LAUGH AT IT! Now, if I can't share the "Guess-what-this-idiot-said/did-to-me-today?" stories for us to all laugh at, then you're trying to change me and my content, and that makes it a lot less fun for me to be here and I'll have all the personality of a tree. Ultimately, these videos are about ME AND MY EXPERIENCES, despite any of the subject matter.... So what did The Duckman do today? Welllllll, here it is! I have no interest in changing that, nor should I have to. LoL! What you see is what everyone wants...the reality of my day. They might say otherwise, and there are a lot of fly-by-nighters that only come to me for quick free help... but whatcha gonna do? Maybe they'll remember me because I was nice to them. Again, I know you were trying to help, but you know, leaving comments like this is counter-productive, and by telling me things that I already know, I have to explain myself to clarify who I am when I can better apply that time on the next project or solving the next problem. for valve cover gasket ? You can use fifth wheel grease . Just a tiny bit . Last forever . Apply only on the gasket . Then put gasket where it go . You do not want fifth wheel in engine
