I started keeping aquariums almost 40 years ago. Ten gallon aquariums were quite the standard for a long time. They weren't called "nano" tanks (nano is a unit misnomer) back then. They were the common size tank many hobbyists had. I find this discussion important, and it shows how things come back around again. A larger tank is technically more ecologically stable, but ten gallon tanks have benefits. Ten gallon aquariums are approachable from several standpoints. They are approachable for beginners, home space, weight, time commitment, and very importantly, expense. After all these years, I actually prefer smaller sized aquariums. They allow me to take a deep dive into a speciality without a lot of expense, time, or space. The hobby should not a source of stress and hassle. Some times bigger isn't always better, and less is more.

I must say having just put together a 5 gal for a small office has been a joy, especially for live plant scapes so much more manageable and didn't cost a lot to fill up and look gorgeous almost like a pro, a little goes a long way in a 5 gal and you can make a really beautiful tank that is so easy to take care of.

When I researched before getting my first tank I keep seeing bigger is better so never considered anything below a 20 gallon. Now seven years later I love my 10 gallon 😊

Hey Corey! I sat through a good chunk of your Sunday Show, just listening.
There was a comment you passed along from people who didn't like the idea of you making money from posting etc etc.
I really don't much care about these things. I've been following you for some time and I can't believe the gall of some people!!
Corey I have learned more from just listening to you! The info we get everything we need from listening to you.
I listen to your filtration comments and knowledge on every aspect of fish keeping. People comment on My knowledge
And I send them to you! Thanks to you I am able to hotrod any type of filtration! It just keeps getting better and better, I am in debt to you Corey. Even here in Canada you can reach out and get my attention! I was out of the game for a few years but I am back and watching you and catching your thoughts and advice. I hope we can meet up one day, so I can. Explain what you have done for me. Until then my friend!

I just replaced a rack that held two 75s & two 55s with a ten gallon rack with 24 10G tanks... I breed a lot of guppies/ live bearers, Corydoras and Bushynose plecos... 10 gallon tanks are very, very handy...! Especially for a breeder...!

I bought the Magic Nano as a second food to feed for variety for my chili rasboras (I was already feeding Bug Buffet which they love and it breaks down into very fine particles for them.) It quickly became just as popular as their other food and I love it because it hangs in the water column long enough for them to eat it all. I feed in a long tank and my chilis all come from all over when I put that food in, and their color is now a deeper red. Added bonus, my shrimp love it too.

My fish room is a majority of 10 gallon tanks on racks. 4 racks with 12 tanks on each. Perfect for growing a strain of guppies. Bottom tanks are breeding tanks, middle are fry (un-sexed), top row is female, female, male, male. I rack for each strain.❤

Very interesting! I am working on breeding guppies as well and have a mix of 5 and 10 gallons. How many tanks do you keep to maintain a single strain? I’ve heard numbers between 6 and 10 tanks, and maybe I’m a little dense, but never had it spelled out what goes in each, and I’m wondering if I’m missing something? 😊

That's why I like 20 gal Longs (and longer tanks in general). It feels like a panoramic 10 gal.
More surface area for oxygenation and it being shallow means easier maintenance as far as reaching in the tank. I can run lights on a lower setting since the plants are closer to the surface. More space for more plants as well.
Feeding is easier for fish that normally prefer to eat mid column (they're likely to just come to the surface since it's so close). I also think the fish make better use of the extra swimming space horizontally rather than vertically.

I have a 11 gallon long (32 inches long) that is my favorite tank right now. I have some Venezuelan Red Sail Cory’s and chili rasboras in it, and the Cories spawn pretty regularly and I have 2 more cories than I started with without even trying. It is planted with crypts, hydrocotyle tripartita, dwarf sag and bucephilandra. I recently added some neocardinas that I took out of my shrimp tank. It is now super stable. I do a water change every few weeks. It sits on the bar between the kitchen and family room and the tank is viewable from both sides. I have a Finnex PX 150 compact canister on one end and added a small sponge on the other to get a good flow through the length of the tank. My light is the Hygger Smart light and my plants are growing so much I have had to thin out both the sag and some of the crypts. My substrate is a coarse natural sand.

@ it is made by Lifegard Aquatics and I bought if on Amazon. I wish the glass was a bit thicker (it is 5mm which is pretty standard for 10 and less tanks, but with longer sides it does flex slightly) because of the long sides, but is otherwise a nice tank.

Hi, thanks for some 10 gallon support. Strictly from a financial point of view I find 15, 20, and 29 gallons, and even larger sizes cheaper per gallon to set up, of course. But over time I definitely see how we can get more for our money and effort with the ordinary 10. They are very enjoyable and accessible. I have been in the hobby for decades (1980), like many listeners. Take time to watch your aquariums, friends.

This was awesome. 10 g tanks do rock!! And you know what? You and I are in agreement about the people we keep in our circles and the circles we choose to participate in. I am not interested in having ignorant people scream at me over their political beliefs and have cut and blocked people from my circle over that. And yep, I've been criticized and accused of creating an echo chamber around me and I'm in total agreement with you, like of course, I'm 67 years old, why would I want to waste my time with anger, ignorance and idiots, name calling, and acting uncivilized, when I have so many interests and circles where folks talk about the things I'm interested in like fish, aquariums, aquascaping, soap making, happy mail art, dogs and cats, houseplants, thrifting, yard sales and estate auctions, fiction books, photography, etc. There is absolutely no point in having people in my circles that are ugly natured and abusive towards me or anybody around me. I love a good debate, but I lnow for a fact grown, reasonable people can agree to disagree without getting ugly and abusive to each other. Top reason why I disengaged from a few fish pages and groups. If you can't behave like you've got some common "act right" I have absolutely zero interest in listening to you, seeing you, or supporting you while you're obviously having a good time being needlessly cruel and enjoying sucking the joy out of everybody you interact with. I wish we could teach children this at a young age. Don't feed into the negativity and cruelty of nasty people. Birds of a feather and all that. Your common sense, morals, character, and healthy balaced view of life in genera,l is one of the reasons I'm still here, still giving you a thumbs up and have been with you and Katie since the way back days, long before Aquarium CoOp was born. My opinion, everybody should create echo chambers of healthy, interesting people in their lives. 👍♥️👍

My 10 gallon tank is my favourite tank. I love it. It’s the one I spend most time observing and enjoying, it’s in my kitchen which helps. I barely need to touch it as it’s a planted natural tank. I would happily downsize my other tanks, but I can’t right now because I love my fancy goldfish too much they’re like puppies. Sometimes in the future I will definitely downsize them though.

Hi Cory thanks for this ten gallon topic! I just set one up in my kitchen and and scaped it with products I already had. Gravel, rock, drift wood and plants borrowed from my 55 & 29 gal tanks. Also had the heater and hob! Talk about economical, the led hood cost the most. I broke the top corner thin glass of the one I had so had to replace it, $14. Oh and I already had your aquarium Co op fine poly pad. Win win. Your right aquariums are great for our mental health.

haha i just bought and finished setting up 10 gal today and I definitely feel you on this. So nice having something be easy and manageable. At first I found the design area limiting but you can create some very interesting vignettes in this size. I'm still getting that 75 gal but the 10 is so rewarding considering the space, time, and upfront cost! Thanks for all the knowledge sprinklings

For most people they want a planted community tank and there's no easier tank than a 10 gallon to make it look great for the least amount of time and money. Even a 20 gallon to setup with all the kit, filtration, lights etc then fill with plants and fish can be quite expensive and time consuming. A 10 gallon is definitely that sweet spot for the type of setup most people want.

53:45 lids are so expensive these days that I actually buy broken windows or aquariums of FB for dirt cheap and cut the non broken glass to fit my tanks. I wanted a lid for my 55 gallon and it was going to be over $100. But a cracked 20 gallon on marketplace was $5. Cut the silicone, toss the broken glass, and boom $5 lid for a 55 gallon

For bigger sizes, at first, yeah they’re more difficult. But once it’s established larger tanks allow for more human error before sh!t hits the fan. Which is why bigger tanks are often easier.
