Are you ready to get your mind blown?
Let me introduce you to a legal, yet highly addictive, drug called BETEL NUT. I've seen it being widely consumed all around the Southern parts of Asia and the Pacific islands (where it naturally grows)... but here in Papua New Guinea, they take betel nut to another level. And they chew it differently than anyone else (with a mustard seed + lime + dried seashells).
More than half the population of PNG chew betel nut daily, or "buai" as they call it in the local language." Over the last 3 days as I've been around the country, I've seen everyone from little kids (under 10) to grandparents in their 90s spitting this red stuff out of their mouths. Betel nut is an unstoppable epidemic.
This video will educate you a little bit about betel nut -- what it is, how it's used, what it does to your health, how the epidemic is affecting the local economy, and if you watch until the end, you'll see my reactions as I try it for the first time.
Have you ever tried betel nut before? Or seen people chewing it? What are your thoughts on the drug?

I chew betel nut daily, it has changed my life, I was suffering from chronic depression and anxiety and OCD, (constantly washing hands). This is better than any antidepressant the doctors have put me on and has none of the horrendous side effects. I'm not a Doctor, I can only tell you what worked for me, but I would recommend if you have exhausted all your options, its worth a try. First couple of days I was a bit speedy, talking a lot and moving fast, it then settled down. 3 months later and my life has completely turned around. I honestly love betel nut and I will never stop eating it.
I did this a lot in india. They make it different over there. It's crushed up and folded in a fresh leaf with various spices. The stalls always fascinated me as they were littered with little jars and cans with different colored powders and the pan wallah would artfully put these folded leaves together. I had to try it. And yeah it's pretty addictive, but on the level of coffee and cigarettes.
Betel nuts are put in Paan leaves in India.

In northeast india betel nuts are also called tamul paan,it is mix with limestone paste and asian leaf, the wet betel nuts are stronger than the dried ones. Even elderly people after loosing tooth can't stop eating cause it's highly addictive.
I’ve always wondered what the allure of the betel nut was. I’m a former ENT RN and we would get patients, some of Asian nationality who would come in complaining of oral pain and ulcerations. When it was discovered that the symptoms were from chewing betel nut, they wouldn’t be able to quit; even after receiving oral cancer diagnoses 😢.
Whoa that’s super addicting
And all this coming from a HOOKER
its like vapeing but it keeps you awake and you dont feel tired after
There’s only an allure for this potentially dangerous drug (if you use like these people every day) because there is stigma surround all other much safer drugs like weed and it is also very illegal to the point of prison time and fines and shit in these countries. They also don’t have access to things like nicotine vapes and kratom and what not. Imagine if you gave everyone there an elf bar and access to one in the future. I’m not saying vapes are necessarily good, but they would probably puff all day on that and it’s possible cancer rates would all as vapes have been shown not to cause cancer like tabacco or in this case betel but

True
In pictures and videos of this country people always have strange teeth.
I’m assuming the betel nut has been around and used this way for centuries so if it hasn’t done damage then what could be the cause now? Sounds like the seashell and limestone mix is what’s causing the rise in mouth cancer.
The “chemical reaction” they speak of maybe.
Yes both of which are correct... the lime burns and the chemical reaction in the mouth aswell.
Doing it on a regular basis (which most Papuan New Guineans are addicted to) does affect the tissues in both the gums and the mouth walls which can ultimately lead to cancer .
But still the chemical reaction requires the acids and bases to react to release arecoline from the nut into the bloodstream which then gives a euphoric sensation thus it is why the limestone base is the perfect candidate for PNG people.
Wondering if the red color could be blood from the inside of your mouth as the lime and stuff causes a chemical reaction to burn you...Ouch.
Who says it hasn't caused damage in the past? Tobacco has been smoked for forever but we only started acknowledging the harm within the past century.
@@cavemanraveman1 Tobacco by itself is actually quite benign. Cigarettes are the reason for the increased health issues. Cigarettes are a mixture of stuff, not pure tobacco.
If you look at any studies done comparing cigarettes to cigars you'll see a significant decrease of adverse health affects in the cigar users than the cigarette smokers. Cigars are usually pure tobacco through and through. Same can be seen with pipe tobacco which is different than cigarette tobacco.
Chewing tobacco is the same way. Snus is relatively safe to use, but things like dip are associated with increased mouth and esophagus cancers.
Nicotine alone is as addictive and as dangerous as caffeine is(nicotine also has potential health benefits for people with Alzheimer's and ADHD btw.)
I've seen Betel Nut for sale in the freezer section of an International Grocery store in Las Vegas. I was tempted to try it. After watching this video, I think I won't. I'm an ex-smoker. I know how hard it was to quit. Not going through that again.

Hard and pungent betal nut with string chemical, overpowering tobacco. People really enjoyed this!
And also it will destroy your teeth if you consume it everyday. I knew it because our local people loves to eat this and most of them got terrible teeth and stink breath.
Here in NE India, we eat a lot but not with Mustard or Sea shell. We eat the mixture of Betel Nut along with Lime and Paan, which we called Betel leaves, leaf pluck from some specific kind of Vine plant. Some like to eat Dry nut while some like the green one, but the process or way of mixing and eating is same. But, dry nut is a bit hard to chew. Also, some of those people who chew the dry one use to add or mix Tobacco to have different Taste. And some other use to add or mix various kinds of sweetener and ingredients in it. The one mix with chewing Tobacco is called Zarda Paan while the one with sweetener is called Mitha or Meetha Paan. The Green Betel nut along with Betel Leaf mix with only Lime and no other ingredients is called Tamul. Here in Mizoram, NE India, the Green one, pack of 4 or 5 pieces i.e., one whole Green Betel nut is cut into severel pieces of same size, usually cut it into 4 pieces; and they pack it along with Betel Leaf and Lime and that price is ₹20. The Zarda Paan is between ₹25 and ₹50 per piece. And the Meetha Paan is starting from ₹10 to upto ₹1,500 per piece. Enough to chew by 1 person for only once costing ₹1,500 is very costly, it is a kind of luxury. The price are varied according to ingredients they mixed it with, ₹20, ₹50, ₹100, ₹150 and so on, going up upto ₹1500, sometime upto ₹2,500 per piece. Here in some city like Mumbai and Nagpur etc, you can found a Paan which Cost ₹500, ₹2500, ₹5000, ₹6000, ₹15,000 and so on and upto Rupees One Lakh (₹1,00,000) per piece too, while you can also find it costing ₹25 or ₹30 only too. Also, if you want it, you can get Smoke Paan , a paan emitting smoke when you start chewing it and also Fire Paan, which they lit it with Fire before they put it inside your mouth, it means you have to chew it while it is still burning. The price are varied according to ingredients and sweetener they mix or add in it. Now a day, $1 is equal to around ₹85, so, if one Paan cost Rupees One Lakh, it is $1,250 in US Dollar, too costly for 1 piece of Paan. You can find it in UA-cam if you want to see it. Come and visit India and come on, chew our Paan, a useless, meaningless things which rob us and left us with no money daily, though it is very addictive it doesn't act as narcotic drugs or any drugs, never letting us drunk or let us behave as drunk. We just chew it and swallow it just like some kids eat their candy or chocolate, it is only a waste of money, it is just like we threw away our money in the drain. We know what bad effect it have on our health and our economy but we still cannot stop chewing it. Bad behaviour with meaningless addiction 😂 At least if it can act as some Drgus giving us some hallucinations or let us have drunken state of mind, it have to be better, but there is none. It is same as addiction of Smoking cigarettes. 😅 Chewing Paan causes many mouth and throat cancer here in Mizoram, NE India.

Most addictive drug is actually sugar mate. I once actively tried to quit sugar. Managed 4 days but became heavily iritable and anxious and became acutely aware of the fact that I knew where all the cafe's were where you could buy chocolates, sodapop etc. Bought a custard slice and ate it and felt the stress leave my body. Sugar is found in almost everything.
Sugar isn't really a drug since it's doesn't actually produce any euphoria, not even a little bit. It just tastes good. Chocolate is more of a drug than sugar is since dark chocolate at least gives you energy and a mood boost. I've never once experienced a sugar high that I noticed.

Areca nut has been an integral part of traditional medicine for many centuries and is used extensively in Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicines. Ayurveda describes the taste of areca nut as a mix of astringent (Kashaya) and sweet (madhura), dry or ruksha in nature, in cold potency, which transforms into pungent taste during digestion. It has potent anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, analgesic, antiulcer and neuroprotective properties.
According to Ayurveda, besides being a great masticatory ingredient, areca nut plays a pivotal role in balancing pitta and kapha doshas even while stimulating digestion.
It is highly recommended for removing toxins, western medicine and their research is only to make money.

1:17 The fact that he's smiling while Drew talks about the epidemic of oral cancer's just too funny 😂
I used to consume it everyday after eating very spicy food. I later became addicted to it but left it quite easily. I only eat it now if I drink, it feels great to just chew it and spit it after drinking. On the other hand, it feels horrendous to eat after smoking weed as your mouth feels really dry and can't produce enough saliva to chew it properly.
Wow, thanks for the insight Togmin.
Wicked video dude, I love traveling. Not sure if you have been to New Zealand, Brazil or Chile yet. This is my first video on the channel. Loved the video, keep growing

In India, we called it "Supari", a major ingredient for Pan masala. We use dry betel nuts.
In Manipur, a North Eastern state of India, it is used in rituals and it is called, "Kongkwa Maru" in Manipuri(local dialect for manipuri).
nehi nehi aca aca
Vipin Chandra Yumnam interesting
gotta try some pan masala next time im in inda lol. does it get you high? (i doubt, but hey, you never know :P)
Vipin Chandra Yumnam Couple of friends of mine bought pan at an Indian store in Sweden like 30 yrs ago. They consumed it after dinner and they also had quite a lot to drink, that worried them a bit because they had a bit of hard work to do next day. But they all woke up like "ping", so it seems to be one hell of a hangover cure. They looked for it again of course but the store quit it, it's probably illegal here now.
Vipin Chandra Yumnam India needs to start educating their people and letting them know that there is toilets not holes on the beach and the backyards of your houses 2 out of 10 houses in India have toilets the rest don't even know what it what it is there is poop all over India that's nasty as you first instead of talking about drugs
I work at the Kroger food warehouse ( not union ) and the Burmese people spit this stuff all over the food boxes and the floor ( pigs ) . It's hard to clean up have to use a steam cleaner on it . Corporate doesn't care about it etc .
I guess UA-cam wants everyone to get addicted to this beetle nut otherwise it wouldn’t recommend it to us smh.
Jason Dubya-DEEZNUTS shut up
UA-cam5000 you are the epitome of a brainwashed mindset , this isn't Fox news , CNN, or your local news from whatever country you are except N. Korea headlining "THE NEW DRUG HIGH FROM A NUT" or "THIS NEW DRUG EPIDEMIC IS NUTS" ,this visual is to inform you unlike networks, channels and local TV stations being broadcasted by the govt to manipulate you.
lol, Betel Nut manufacturers will stop selling to locals and sell to foreigners now at a much higher price thanks to this video.
Knowledge is power, with great power comes great responsibility
UA-cam wants more drug dealers to have it on there recommended
It looks absolutely grotesque watching people chew this shit
It looks like a crime scene where people spit, I’ve seen it irl
It looks nasty seeing anybody chew anything up close. I feel like ppl just hate it bc its different.

SAK- SOON I think the shells with the limestone corrodes their teeth and also damages the inside of their mouth to allow the betel nut to enter their bloodstream, which is why it becomes orange (from the blood)
Don't be racist.

Hero Hour and you sound dumb. But it's okay, I forgive you.
Hero Hour yeahhh because race has something to do with dental hygiene
Drew: betal nuts are the most addictive drug in the world.
Me, an intellectual: oxygen.
Me an intellectual: Betel leaves
Back where I'm from, heroin makes up my planet's atmosphere, so yeah
Oxygen has very bad withdrawal effects
Good one
I’m officially here to declare that I’m 20 minutes oxygen free. I do feel lightheaded but I can deal with that
I saw this everywhere when I was traveling in Sri Lanka. Never tried it though. Awesome you actually tried it thanks for sharing
Plot twist: the white stuff is straight up cocaine and they just eat it with the nut for flavor

My family grows betel nut,
And it's nothing like the ones in this video.
The fruit itself is almost twice as big, nobody plucks it when it's green, that would be a crime. We leave it until the fruit is ripe orange colour.
It's very fibrous, so you can't remove the outer cover with your mouth. You let it dry in the sun for 2 months, and then you remove the dry fibrous layer with an instrument.
Inside you have the seed, which is hard as rock. If you tried chewing it, you'd break your teeth.
You cut it into smaller pieces with a special instrument, and it becomes more manageable. But still hard.
It's used along with betel leaves (completely different plant) , tobacco, and lime.
It gives the same red thing. And people do spit it everywhere.
But the main drug here is tobacco.
2:32 Seashells from the ocean? I thought seashells from the sky.
Marco Alvarez yeah I thought he got them from the SeaShell Tree
😂 Omg!
Marco Alvarez I thought they were under the flat earth

Drew Binsky you’re on drugs
When they said betel nut i thought they meant nut from a beetle
Worm Driver No he clearly refers to a member of the Beatles.
Drew Binsky hi
HNTR KLLR The best idiot you've ever seen
Worm Driver Thx
Are u nut😂😂😂😂
This consumption actually exists too here in the Philippines, most indigenous elders do it and the mixtures are almost exactly the same. I've just learned that this is called betel nut though😁
They have this tiny/handy mortar and pestle where the nuts, seashells ash and some sort of leaves are mix together and it's called 'nga-nga' locally particularly here in Palawan. It has a sour, quite bitter and a taste of unripe bananas.
Its muma
That's great to know, that we Papua New Guinea's have ancient relative's in the Philippines still practicing the culture.
Same thing in North East India. Elderly ppl like it very much.
We call it Mamah in Bicol
Momma in Cordillera
Yup this Betel nut does give you a slight buzz, and euphoria while you are chewing it. Very addictive indeed. I knew people that chew this everyday here in the U.S and are very used to it.
Yeah buaiiiiiiiiii
I was thinking the same 😂
Yeahhhj boiiiiii

2:03 boost your intelligence? I’m not so sure...
ToxinZ Probably, keeps you calm.
It will. Stimulants amplify your nervous system, increasing the rate of thought and awareness. It also improves focus, which is why people with ADHD take Adderall.
Anthony Grigoryan agreed, like painkillers don’t exactly reduce pain but they give your body euphoria so it ignores the pain
It's probably possible, saying it's not entails saying you're consistently at the same level of intelligence (Which is pretty hard to define precisely) all the time... I don't think that's the case, I think external conditions do influence our intelligence, for example when you're under pressure, etc. Anyways, it might just be that it makes you *feel* smarter / more focused, thus making you perform better. I think adderall does something like that, if i recall correctly.
Lmao i thought the same thing
In India its also famous with lots of other ingredients especially gulkand inside a (paan)Bettle-nut leaf. And in many occasions after food, mostly in marriage party guest really like to take Paan-supari, Meta-paan etc with different name given to it. Its really demanding item too.
People in India also very addict to Betel-nuts including the Betel-nuts leaves and limestone paste known as chuna and Betel-nuts as (supari) in my state its known as (tambul-paan). In some of villages marriage-ceremony invitation were send through with tambul-paan wrapping in banana leaves.
Buai thats addictive
