I Visited The World’s Largest Open Air Crack Market

In São Paulo, Brazil - there is a place called Cracolandia which is known as one of the world’s most infamous open-air drug markets, where thousands of people gather daily to consume and trade illegal substances. This area is notorious for its harsh living conditions and the social challenges it presents. Despite multiple government efforts to clear the area, Cracolândia continues to linger due to its deep-rooted issues like poverty, addiction, and the lack of long-term rehabilitation solutions. The scale of this crisis has made it a symbol of the complex relationship between drug abuse, homelessness, and public health in Brazil.
Walking through Cracolândia feels like stepping into a different world - like I'm living among the Walking Dead. All I experienced was a chaotic zone, about the size of a football field, filled with addicts, dealers, and makeshift shelters. For visitors and locals alike, Cracolândia is both a shocking reality and a wild reminder of the social inequalities that continue to plague major urban centers. And despite its reputation, it also serves as a critical case study for understanding the larger global issue of urban drug epidemics.
I'd love to get your thoughts on Cracolândia in the comments down below. Thanks for watching.

This video truly terrified me. I used to think that Skid Row in Los Angeles and the homeless drug issues in Pennsylvania were the worst, but what I saw in Brazil is even more alarming. As an Asian, I believe that the local governments often profit from the corruption tied to drug dealers.
Ciao
It’s disgusting how these wonderful people are risking their lives and yet the government does nothing.
I am Brazilian and I live in greater Sao Paulo and I tell you all, the blame for all this is the government that made deals with the city's organized crime and crackland only exists because of them, the drug dealers and the government.

Yeah well..and people with no self control
@@TeIpsumNosce Addiction is not about self Control.
Thats why the illnes called Addiction.
It’s literally called Substance Abuse Disorder & is in the DSM 5.
Being in the DSM 5 means it’s a disorder. “No self control” is not in the DSM 5.
The government party PT is one of the biggest dealer of all. They also use those NGOs for political political purposes. They don't want to get rid of them. Ideally for them is to keep them there
Hi, brazilian fom São Paulo here, and my cousin is a cop. You kinda failed to explain one thing. It is not that the police is somehow scared of going into the cracolandia. The users and even the drugdealers don't really have guns, maybe some antique revolvers, but hardly an arsenal. The police can easily come from both sides and expell everyone in like 15 minutes and then the goverment will clean the place up. IN FACT, they have done that. Several times already.
However, the unintended consequence, is that this just spreads the user throughout the city, and lo and behold, suddenly you have a lot of small Cracolandias instead of a single big one. And sooner or later, they go back to this same place. And yeah, you might arrest a couple of small time drug dealers in the process, but what is that even worth? To arrest a bunch of guys that will be replaced within 40 minutes of their arrest. In the end, you'll have just spread what was up untill then a concentrated problem, and arrested some small time dealers, gaining virtually nothing, and actually making the overall region worse.
It is not a security problem in of itself, but a public health problem. They don't even steal that much around the Cracolandia itself (you yourself saw how many police man were there), but when you have a lot of widespread tiny Cracolandias instead of a big one, you have made the whole city center generally worse and more dangerous. That is why the police choose not to act, except when there is violence or a threat to the outside population.
Again, it is not a security problem, but a public health one, and as long as there are still addicts, there will still be supply and demand. The city has actually done a decent (if not brilliant) job trying to get these people back on track, but they just can't do it. A couple year ago, the mayor wanted to implement involuntary hospitalization of the addicts, which I personally agree with, but it was seen as a violation of human rights by some.
It is honestly a very difficult situation to get out of. Either way, loved the video, and God bless these people that try to give there por souls some sort of hel and dignity. Just wanted to make it clear that it is not like the police can't get in, but rather that they won't, because the consequences would be worse, and the problem would continue.
OBRIGADO!!
Also authorities and politicians don't want confrontation with PCC (which controls drugs) for fear of retaliation, so it's easier to just let it happen.

I have watched a lot of your videos. I have seen you put yourself in very harrowing situations, the worst, being Cracklandia. Narrow trails cut hundreds of feet above a gorge is terrifying, but you have the control in that situation. However, walking through Cracklandia, barely hiding your camera, you have no control, as you can't control human nature. Thank you for making these videos. They are not only fascinating and educational, but you show us things and places you wouldn't normally see. Thank you so much.

Drew, I love following your content! I'm Brazilian and currently live in São Paulo. Our city is incredibly rich in culture, with numerous tourist attractions, cultural landmarks, and vibrant places to explore. However, unfortunately, crack addiction has deeply impacted a large portion of the homeless population. Walking freely in the city center is not an option...we always have to stay on high alert due to the risk of theft. Sadly, it feels like public policies fail to address this situation. Instead of solving the problem, they simply relocate people, causing the issue to spread throughout the downtown area.

Brazil could be one of the best countries in the world if they fixed their crime and poverty. Instead they’re basically the USA without the USA’s wealth
Imagine in my hometown in New Jersey USA, I can go to bed with my front door wide open with no issues. Crime is only an issue in some urban areas where the democratic party controls.
Pretty much that. The thing is the "parallel power, that is not so parallel", crime is infiltrated in the government, regardless of left or right wings. Here too is highly polarized, but they all are in contact and supported by crime in some way. Just google news about drugs being discovered in planes and helichopters owned by politicians or their immediate families. In Sao Paulo state specifically, research about aorganized crime and licitations by the state and munipalilies, it's baffling. A lot of things are right her and in the Paraisopolis video, but they kinda conflict between the two videos, just to show it's not so black and white.
The thing is economically Brazil isn't a poor country. Similar to Mexico which also has a large economy is a lot of corruption.
The USA would be a great place if it wasn't for the crime, poverty and lack of democracy.

Westside roller u look like a yuppy college hipster bro, wtf u rollin😂
Dude he is a 😎 cool person. Growup.
Those adults have a choice, the children you know who are being abused and raped do not and the poor pets stuck with those monsters...pathetic !
I'm Brazilian, so I think I have the freedom to talk about this. Do you know why they don't change? Because of these people who help; that's the problem. They don't need support, they need retaliation. The users themselves say, 'Why work? The government supports us.' You might say, 'But what about the truly poor people?' because you’re only basing this on a video. Most of the people they showed there are drug users. I'm not saying this lightly, since the addicts themselves, when interviewed, say they don’t need anything else because they’re given everything.
I believe the city hall shouldn't focus social services in the center; it should spread them out so that users don't concentrate in one location, and increase the operational forces of both the military and civil police. We can't treat them like they're a bunch of helpless people, because that's not what they are.
exactly, these people are enablers
Being an addict is a sickness and is classified as such.
But not every country can or should invest into its treatment. Addicts are still a minority of the total population and they are expensive to get out of their addiction.
Absolutely true what you say
This is such an ignorant comment it's insane
ancap é tudo idiota
I was a crack user and lived on the streets like that too.Thank God I'm clean.Drugs imprison you and change the way you think and see the world. It is very difficult to give up.
Bro got on a plane, flew for about 14hrs just to arrive in Philadelphia
Growing up in Kensington I think São Paulo looks 100x worse
@@CombatArm99 They said heroin but it´s rare in Brazil, it is mostly crack, cocaine, alcohol and spice (synthetic weed). Meanwhile in the usa they take all of those metioned and even more like meth, heroin, opioids, lean, acid and so on

Yeah Drew sounds like a bit of a knob

Don’t judge them. They were/ are children of a mother and father, husband, wife’s, mothers, fathers…people like you and me that are completely lost.. fk this makes me sad. I wish I could heal addiction with a touch of my hand.
@@marcosalvess8096 the problem is that when drugs consume your soul you *are* a bad person because you behave like one
I love that you approach addiction with compassion, my father intentionally OD & he was a brilliant software developer. People struggle, and also deserve a second chance. Im sorry for your moms friend
One more thing, i need to shame the chemist who widely spread the method of freebasing the salt. They ruined so many lives
Drew...bro.. u GOTTA stop using 'literally' wrong. Great job of revealing this major crisis! Sometimes we forget how lucky we are.
Crazy, I’ve been to São Paulo 2X and had no clue this place existed, it’s like skid row. How unfortunate.

hi drew i started watching your videos 2 months ago and they are really interesting keep up the good work
First of all, I must say that I am learning English and this message was written using Google Translate. The neighborhood he shows is Bela Vista, and the interesting thing is that the neighborhood is very diverse. At the same time that you see the crackland, you also see nice apartments and houses. Bela Vista was a traditional Jewish neighborhood, but a few decades ago it was taken over by Koreans. Another very extreme point is that inside these warehouses there are people in labor analogous to slavery [mostly Bolivians] and they work abusive hours to "feed" clothing stores in Bela Vista or Brás. Another interesting fact is that the museum he showed was designed by the same guy who designed Casa das Rosas. And by the way, the Santa Efigenia neighborhood is where most drug users are concentrated, not Bela Vista, and with that in mind I recommend that foreigners be extremely careful with pickpockets, and if they can, do not take phones, jewelry or cards, and also keep an eye on the machines because they can scam you by stealing your data or charging a much higher amount than the amount that should be paid.
0:25 that poor dog.. street dogs, cat and other non-human animals have it rough 😔😞😞😥😥😢😢
5:23 im not saying i dont get it... we should help people... when does a persons actions need to be their own priority? when is it enough help? when others are suffering from helping? i dunno...
Prayers for these precious souls enslaved by drugs.🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
they are not entslaved by drugs. i hate this victim mentality. sure they are all deeply traumatized but it is a choice to give up or fight and believe in the good no matter the circumstances and the past.

According to this guy they have no souls, as he called them soulless people. There is still hope for many of them if they choose despite the conditions they’re in now . They are lost souls not soulless
"They live like bodies that forgot to die... Dead bodies that forgot they're dead."

I honestly didn’t know there were Jews in Brazil. This guy is doing Gods work. Awesome guy.
Yes, there are still plenty of good people out there. The easiest and best way to add meaning to your life, but not everybody gets it.

Yip it doesn't mean an addict is soulless addiction is just a chapter in the book it can be arrested and recovery is possible am now 7 years clean from heroine cocain and cracks

Drug addicts are soulless. They feel numb to everything, just walking dead, speaking as one myself.
Maybe because of the language barrier, she doesn't know what it exactly means
Well, she said "they have lost their souls" instead of "they're souless", in portuguese this would sound weird too, for this situation.
