I thought the ending of american psycho demonstrated how unreliable of a narrator Bateman was. Once you realize that there’s no possible way he could have fed a cat to an ATM or blown up those police cars, and that some of the people we saw him kill are not dead, it puts into question the entire story. Is he really that attractive, wealthy, or cunning?
This movie was a feast for the mind, and it's just that, an over excessive feast with more than enough to fill the mind but also way more than what is needed to satisfy an overarching theme.

For me, the 'literally me' trope represents the goal. These are characters who have at least a somewhat difficult life, but find a way to do something, anything, to rise out of it. It's a mental, as well as physical, escape from the dull, depressing cycle of life.
Very good analysis I know a lot of people make fun of this trend or jokingly refer to characters as 'literally me', but I believe that behind every meme and every _sigma male compilation #52_ there is a degree of honesty, which is why I think movies of this type are really important. First an important thing to get out of the way is that 'literally me' is a phrase exaggerated for comedic effect. It is not that people view the characters as actual versions of themselves, but rather that there is an aspect of these characters that makes them relatable or allows on to empathize with them. These aspects, as everyone surely noticed, are different negative emotions- loneliness, alienation, insincerity, fake personas, (paradoxically) inability to empathize with other people, a desire for affection etc. Expressing these emotions through characters in a film allows us to be more aware of them, to start to think about why do we feel a certain way, where does this feeling come from, whether it's telling me something and so on. But perhaps more importantly it almost creates a sense of comradery in showing that you are not alone and there are other people that too feel this way and are misunderstood, which in turn also allows one to cope and reconcile with these emotions. My 'literally me' movie was Into the Wild. It's a good movie by itself, but before watching it I was certain that I am the only person who has this burning urge to leave everything behind and just run away into the woods, living exclusively off my own fruits of labour. These thoughts were so bad that I genuinely thought I'm mentally ill for a long time, and perhaps I was. But watching this movie was such a catharsis, if you've never experienced this then you would simply be unable to comprehend it. It's like a literal boulder was lifted from my soul. Finding out that the main character, based off a real person, shared these same struggles made me feel so much more calm, and after finding other people who enjoyed this movie and felt the same way I was actually able to finally reconcile with myself and subdue this desire. Important to note is that this experience didn't kill it, but made me able to control it. I'm still obsessed with self sufficiency and I still get the urge to run away from my problems and to never return, but the difference is that now I don't have to do so to feel whole and happy, and that in spite of me being unable to do so I can still find things to enjoy in life and be happy

Hmm, I think your probably right. But it shouldn't really be like that. People just haven't developed a personality because we aren't going out and living anymore. Like a good amount of dudes are 21, living with their parents, virgins, (which aren't terrible) but a lot aren't employed, lazy, unmotivated, empty, lack of meaning. It is real sad to see.
I completely agree. So many men who related to this movie are just lonely and sad and above all, uninteresting. The Joker is what i really saw as the most fitting "relatable" character, except of killing people irl Arthur is a person in the society where society itself wouldn't careless of his existence he tried and tried to be seen but people just can't seem to understand his need of attention hence him resulting for him making the people see him by killing 3 men in the subway. I think my personal favourite "literally me" character from film is 'Dfens' from Falling down. He's not particularly cool, but I really related to a lot of his reasoning in the film. It's cathartic to see him say "no, this is how it should be!" And cause destruction and mayhem in his wake because of this. He rampages through bullshit and it feels great seeing him right the 'wrongs' in reality he sees. But the best part is how the film gets you. You get on board with this protagonist, love all the violent acts he does, get a great vicarious power trip from his actions, then the plot twists and we see just how barbaric and selfish he is acting. The film tricks you into relating to the guy, only to show us what kinda person actually does that sort of stuff. It makes you feel the ugly side of all the cool violence this guy commits, what it truly means. It's a beautiful subversion of the power fantasy protagonists, and I think tries to warn us against the glorification of 'the man who won't take it anymore." The line at the end of the film "I'm the bad guy?!" It's just brilliant.
its a little bizarre being a comic book fan and seeing the comparisons between batman and bateman. so much of the batman mythos is about bruce caring very deeply for his fellow human and having very profound emotions despite his stoic exterior. theyre basically opposites if you know anything about batman
catwoman batman returns is my literally me character, losing her ambitions due to a shitty job and establishment, then dies(not literally me but) and can only survive fueled by her rage and craving for revenge.
What I think is kinda sad that most of the “literally me“ characters in pop culture are men. And mostly it’s about them hiding their emotions and than letting them go, like Joker. I think most men relate to them cause they feel like they can’t show emotion…
In the Joker, it's obvious that the system meant to help with Fleck's mental illness is failing him, which we see immediately through his meeting with the therapist. Everything else that follows is just a result of his environment, not of his actions, not until we see his first kills. It's then he realizes, in that ominous bathroom ballet, he has some sort of control for once in his life. And when we see his transformation into the Joker, the blood smear smile is great and all but it's hard to cheer for the tragic comedy we witnessed. You're take on the "literally me" aspect of the movie makes sense when it comes to people with mental illness relating to that character but its also troubling to think some people would WANT to relate to Arthur Fleck. It's a really great origin story for fans of the comics but analyzing it from a critical point of view, Arthur had to resort to chaos and violence in order to sense some sort of order in his own life. DC character aside, I think the movie isn't trying to show chaos as a cool thing, but rather the tragic life of someone with mental illness who has no real help. Great movie and great video!

Honestly I disagree with what you say about American psycho. He isn’t a victim of the conformity we’re forced into: he is the exact embodiment of that conformity. He is the need to fit in and he even tells us this at the beginning of the film - “there is no Patrick Bateman, only an abstraction”. Watching the film, or better still reading the book, and thinking of him as a cliche rather than a human provides a much better idea for what Ellis was trying to communicate

I think Anton characters relate to those who felt that they need to follow a certain code of rule in order to manage their life, and often these people when they're not following those code felt something wrong and then bad things happened.

The only time i felt like "that's literally me" was with the only videogame that has managed to make me genuinely cry. It was right at the end of Yakuza Like a Dragon when **spoilers** Kasuga tells Ryo Aoki that even though he killed (not directly) the most important person of his life, he still forgives him saying that he doesn't want to lose him too, that even though he ruined his life he still considers him his brother even if Ryo doesn't. I won't say i'm anything like Kasuga, he is cool and can see past his own desires, but for that moment and that moment only... I felt like he was me right then and there, that i would have made the same desicion than him, that no matter what the other party did to me, if i care for them I would have looked past it all and just forgave everything with no grudge hold against them, as Kasuga himself puts it: "I want for you to start from rock bottom, and i'll be there with you the whole way back up". So yeah, i guess Kasuga Ichiban was (at least for a breaf moment) my "literally me" character
I don’t usually cry during video games, but the final confrontation between Ichiban and Masato in Yakuza: Like a Dragon almost made me cry. I can’t say i’m similar to Ichiban either, but he is a character that I’m honestly inspired by. Ichiban definitely is a great and down-to-earth character.

Just a reminder: "lead character" ≠ "good guy". And anarchy ≠ chaos. In casual conversation, sure, but not in this case. What Tyler creates in "Fight Club" is outright _fascism._ Fincher even literally said that. He also laughed in a Bateman-like reaction to being confronted with the fact that so many viewers failed to see any message beyond "Tyler is everything you're not", especially "cool". I wonder how he feels about it now that so many altright lost boys idolise that villain (and Tyler _is_ a horrible villain) what with their lack of media literacy and misdirected aggression. King of Comedy is pretty required watching for an analysis of The Joker, as is Taxi Driver. Both, not coincidentally, starring Robert DeNiro, but King of Comedy has more paralells imho
I don't think people actually relate to these characters. It's just a few individuals who create memes mocking it, but then people who've never seen the films see clips and edits where there's a deep/gangsta quote that they "relate" to without actually having any similarities to the character in the first place. This is especially true for Taxi Driver and Fight Club. Although the whole point of these films is that it reflects actual people in society, and the audience to an extent, the people saying "literally me fr" are either propagating the joke or aren't aware of the full story. Although, it could be argued that this disregarding way of thinking is exactly what leads to real people fostering a mindset like Ed Norton and Robert de Niro's characters, as we've tragically seen time and again in recent years.
A thing to note; fiction blurs reality. "I literally wish I was half as cool as them" everyone is infinitely cooler, than some... fiction.. some lie :D where people act... most of the world is fake and we can only see through a mirror darkly, without God's help.

What I think helps a lot of people to project themselves onto these character is that they have very little actual character, or developement for that matter, they all mostly show their facade. I mean, for some of them we don't even get their real name. I also think you could have engaged more critically with the portrayal of these characters.

What I think is kinda sad that most of the “literally me“ characters in pop culture are men. And mostly it’s about them hiding their emotions and than letting them go, like Joker. I think most men relate to them cause they feel like they can’t show emotion…
There are some female characters like this, mostly moody goth girls or "quirky" ones
In the Joker, it's obvious that the system meant to help with Fleck's mental illness is failing him, which we see immediately through his meeting with the therapist. Everything else that follows is just a result of his environment, not of his actions, not until we see his first kills. It's then he realizes, in that ominous bathroom ballet, he has some sort of control for once in his life. And when we see his transformation into the Joker, the blood smear smile is great and all but it's hard to cheer for the tragic comedy we witnessed.
You're take on the "literally me" aspect of the movie makes sense when it comes to people with mental illness relating to that character but its also troubling to think some people would WANT to relate to Arthur Fleck. It's a really great origin story for fans of the comics but analyzing it from a critical point of view, Arthur had to resort to chaos and violence in order to sense some sort of order in his own life. DC character aside, I think the movie isn't trying to show chaos as a cool thing, but rather the tragic life of someone with mental illness who has no real help. Great movie and great video!

Honestly I disagree with what you say about American psycho. He isn’t a victim of the conformity we’re forced into: he is the exact embodiment of that conformity. He is the need to fit in and he even tells us this at the beginning of the film - “there is no Patrick Bateman, only an abstraction”. Watching the film, or better still reading the book, and thinking of him as a cliche rather than a human provides a much better idea for what Ellis was trying to communicate

I think Anton characters relate to those who felt that they need to follow a certain code of rule in order to manage their life, and often these people when they're not following those code felt something wrong and then bad things happened.

Storytelling meaning how he analyzes/breaks down what he's talking about along with his pacing. This was a well made video mostly in part due to his narration/articulation of his thoughts. Sure the message can be simple but that doesn't mean it can't be explained in a unique way, which is what he definitely delivered.

The only time i felt like "that's literally me" was with the only videogame that has managed to make me genuinely cry.
It was right at the end of Yakuza Like a Dragon when **spoilers** Kasuga tells Ryo Aoki that even though he killed (not directly) the most important person of his life, he still forgives him saying that he doesn't want to lose him too, that even though he ruined his life he still considers him his brother even if Ryo doesn't.
I won't say i'm anything like Kasuga, he is cool and can see past his own desires, but for that moment and that moment only... I felt like he was me right then and there, that i would have made the same desicion than him, that no matter what the other party did to me, if i care for them I would have looked past it all and just forgave everything with no grudge hold against them, as Kasuga himself puts it: "I want for you to start from rock bottom, and i'll be there with you the whole way back up".
So yeah, i guess Kasuga Ichiban was (at least for a breaf moment) my "literally me" character
I don’t usually cry during video games, but the final confrontation between Ichiban and Masato in Yakuza: Like a Dragon almost made me cry. I can’t say i’m similar to Ichiban either, but he is a character that I’m honestly inspired by. Ichiban definitely is a great and down-to-earth character.

Just a reminder: "lead character" ≠ "good guy". And anarchy ≠ chaos. In casual conversation, sure, but not in this case. What Tyler creates in "Fight Club" is outright _fascism._ Fincher even literally said that. He also laughed in a Bateman-like reaction to being confronted with the fact that so many viewers failed to see any message beyond "Tyler is everything you're not", especially "cool". I wonder how he feels about it now that so many altright lost boys idolise that villain (and Tyler _is_ a horrible villain) what with their lack of media literacy and misdirected aggression. I don't think people actually relate to these characters. It's just a few individuals who create memes mocking it, but then people who've never seen the films see clips and edits where there's a deep/gangsta quote that they "relate" to without actually having any similarities to the character in the first place. This is especially true for Taxi Driver and Fight Club. Although the whole point of these films is that it reflects actual people in society, and the audience to an extent, the people saying "literally me fr" are either propagating the joke or aren't aware of the full story.
Although, it could be argued that this disregarding way of thinking is exactly what leads to real people fostering a mindset like Ed Norton and Robert de Niro's characters, as we've tragically seen time and again in recent years.

What I think helps a lot of people to project themselves onto these character is that they have very little actual character, or developement for that matter, they all mostly show their facade. I mean, for some of them we don't even get their real name.
