The Beyond Ghibli title cards were fantastic. What I love the most about Bebop is the music. It's just spectacular. Second thing I love most is that it ENDS after one season. All other shows just keep going forever until you get sick of them.
Watanabe's debut was actually MACROSS PLUS (1994). In fact, if you look at the character designs in those you'll see similarities to Faye, Julia, and even Spike.
I let my son, 11 or 12 at the time, watch Bebop and at the end he started weeping. "It's ok. Spike might not actually be dead." I said, but there was no stopping those tears. That's how vetted, how connected you get to these characters. When I told my friends he cried at the end almost all of them said, "Yeah. That's the appropriate response." Such a great production.
About time someone delivered the comprehensive overview Cowboy Bebop deserved. Every other review I've seen has been a broken record, only describing the same one or two keypoints regarding the show's "maturity".
I just want you to know that it's not okay to play with people's hearts like this, just like the show your review ended too quickly. Faye I miss you girl.
Like a hole in your chest right? I call it the Void, Ive felt it 3 times, at the end of Cowboy Bebo, at the end of Clannad season 1, and at the end of Death Note.
It was a beautiful end. Spike said it himself “he died already when Julia betrayed him. He was the classic Doomed Champion, seeking his end with Vicious.”
Cowboy Bebop is admittedly not a show that everyone can get behind, and as time goes on more and more people believe it to be overrated. But God, if you're lucky enough to have this show click with you, there's truly nothing else like it in the medium of anime. Also, it has some of the best and most varied UA-cam retrospectives of any TV show.
"Ganymede Elegy" and "Hard Luck Woman" have some of the most touching scenes I've seen in a series or film, I get choked up just thinking about those ones.
The best part of Bebop is that even today it continues to introduce people to anime. It was my first anime in 2015, and is always the first one I recommend to people who want to get into anime
Finished watching cowboy bebop for the first time the other day. Couldn't stop thinking how much the vibes and style and feel of the soundtrack (even though most of the music is diferent genres) reminded me of samurai champloo, so it's awesome finding out that watanabe is the guy behind both. Instant fan here
The sound effects and audio tracks that were replaced in the remastered were so different and foreign to me that I recut the remaster footage with the original 4:3 release audio.. yes .. I love Cowboy Bebop this much. It pains me to know others are watching it for the first time without that original beautiful audio
"Its snarling jazz soundtrack was (if you'll excuse the pun) instrumental in thematically grounding the series." I will not excuse the pun. Own it like a man! "No pun intended" is a sign of weakness of character.
I almost never leave comments under youtube videos but I'll write one down here just to say how impressed I am by the work you put into creating this video and how much I enjoyed watching it.
Hi. I watched this video few weeks ago and you convinced me to watch Cowboy Bebob. I came back to say Thak You. I haven't seen many anime in my life, and I haven't seen non in my chirdhood, so I wasn't fan of it. But this series is absolutely magnificent. You said in this video that Bebop is worth rewatching and I thought this is an exaggeration of anime fan but just when I finished 26 session, I wanted to start waching it from begining. Thank You!
I come back to this video every few months to revisit one of, if not, the best video about one of the best shows I've seen. I can't thank you enough for making something so beautiful.
what i loved about this anime was the depth it had from the start to its inconclusive end. so much emotions ran within the series, and it felt like i lost a friend once i finished it.
i actually cant put into words how much i love this show. my all time favorite piece of media ever made. even watching this, hearing the music, puts a smile on my face. i watch it a few times a year.
If an art can make your heart break, numb your mind with questions you would never ask, fill your consciousness with emotions you never knew were there and gap your mouth awestruck with ecstatic satisfaction & gratitude to have stumbled upon such a masterpiece and especially if you (the audience) are adults who keep coming back then you know you’ve watched a timeless classic. It’s not an opinion, it’s a fact Cowboy Bebop is the greatest anime and one of the greatest animated series/film of all time. Cowboy Bebop is even better than Spirited Away. There, I said it. Edited: I haven’t even started on the original soundtrack of Cowboy Bebop. It’s a work of art which needs review on its own.
Your style of writing, editing and critical eye makes your videos almost equal to the anime’s that you are discussing. In some cases (Miss Hokusai) I’ve preferred your videos and hearing you discusss the movies more than I enjoyed the movies themselves. You are real talent and I think it’s only a matter of time until you break out of UA-cam...
I had no idea that CB had such a hard time debutting on tv. For future videos, would you consider including a works cited list in the description to assist viewers who may want to follow up on some of the interesting facts you lay out in the video? Lastly, thank you for all of the research, editting, etc you did for this deep dive! It is amazing. As a long time Cowboy Bebop fan and repeat viewer, you have my immense gratitude.
You got the theme and story line correct. You got the undertones and feeling right. You incorporated our favorite crew from the 'Verse, you did all the music right, and you finished with Wo Qui Non Coin... This is perfect. Thank You
Thank you Beyond Ghibli for making a video on my favorite series of all time. All love. This anime touched me in a personal level because I can relate to spike and the rest of the cast because the anime display thier suffering through unique ways of story telling. The story is deep and unique in so many ways and I love it because it's very grounded and realistic. Cowboy bepop ost is my life, it helped me through depression because the ost has very emotional and relax vibe that I can listen to. I would listen to the ost religously because my life is filled with depressed things, I've listened to it these past 1 year and a half and still listening to this day. Love the characters and the rest.
I don't know how many times i've watched Cowboy Bebop, but everytime i see it, i feel a pain deep in my chest, like a sentiment of nostalgia, like something that was always there, comforting me in my most introspect and philosophical moments of my teenagehood. It was the reason i started listening to jazz and blues at the age of 15 and became absolutely addicted to the genres since then. Puting the shounen aside that were born in the final of the 90s (in this case, the "big three"), Cowboy Bebop is definatly the greatest anime i've ever watched in my life, just like Ghost in the Shell, Akira and so many other animes that try to defy the greatest dogmas of society, and defy the civilization trough it's expectators, us of course. And as strange as it might seem, i've always preferred the subs over the dubs, always, not because the english language is not my native language, but because i've always prefer the series in their original content, however Bebop is the only show that i have that is in it's dub version, don't know why but the only way i can see it is in the american version like there's some inexplicable reason to it. Beyond Ghibli i just found out about you and your channel today and the only thing that comes to my mind to say about what you do is - "Tank" you. PS - You've just gained a new subscriber.
I've been trying to get into anime for years. I really enjoyed Cowboy Bebop and Kids on the Slope is one of the most moving shows I've ever seen (if only they did another episode so the ending wasn't so rushed), but to this day anime still doesn't draw me in that much. Watching a whole series of a show I like seems like a big time investment when I could listen to a few albums or watch a few films instead. Yet here I am, subscribed to your channel, constantly watching your analysis. There's a real depth and quality to your essays that very few other channels match, the passion is really obvious and something about the way you explain all these shows is very nostalgic and oddly soothing. You're probably one of the best video essay writers I've ever come across on UA-cam, and that's saying something. Big up man, keep it going!
If you want an inventive world, try Twelve Kingdoms. If you want top notch character drama, watch Ping Pong the Animation. And if you need another romp in space, Banner of the Stars is very nice.
Beyond echoing all the good stuff heaped on this video (deservedly), I'd also like to thank you for the shout-out to Serenity/Firefly, which got done dirty by the network but at least we got a movie.
My friend and I are about halfway through the series right now. For both of us it's our first time watching. We found another interesting perspective that the show offers, in that instead of not being able to let go from the past, the show's theme could instead be interpreted as "You can't run away from the past" and seeing how each of the four characters deal with it. Spike seems to take his past head-on, even if it costs him his life or puts his crew's needs/wants in jeopardy. Aside from the two episodes with Jet, the one with his ex, and the other with his old ex-buddy cop, he seems fairly content with his place in the world and has largely come to terms with his existence, already having faced his past some time ago. He loves Ein the moment he steps foot in the ship, eventually warms up to Faye, and doesn't really have any gripes about Ed coming aboard the ship, even after it was hacked and forced to crash-land into the water so they'd take her. With Spike, they seem to share the exact kind of relationships two mercs who have lived together for some odd years should have. Not necessarily best friends, but at the very least close, and definitely in tune with each other's emotions and values. Faye seems to want nothing to do with her past and is the most troubled by it. She constantly puts up a front and seems to experience dissociative disorder from her trauma. I don't think its a coincidence that three years prior to Bebop's release, Evangelion also dealt with these same issues that Faye has. With Ed, I'm not so sure. Hopefully she gets her own episode that better fleshes out her backstory and how she handles her past, which I assume so given that there's footage of her in the retrospective that I haven't seen yet. One thing that has both my friend and I puzzled is the insane attention to detail with all of the firearms, right down to the perfect placing of the logo and caliber. I can very clearly make out most of the fire arms that the characters use. To name a few, there's the H&K MP5K that Faye uses in her opening episode, Spike's 941 Jericho, Mac 10s that the eco-terrorists use, Uzis, etc. I would've liked to see a small bit of time dedicated in the retrospective on why so much detail was given to them. Similarly, it seems that most of the fire arms used are of Israeli make and even some of the foreign text that shows up on the multi-language holograms is in Arabic. Enough out of me though, I think you have perfectly described what Bebop is and what it means as a cultural landmark without ANY hyperbole. It really is that good, and I'm not even halfway through it yet. Thank you for making this video and putting into words why this show is so valuable.
I heard of cowboy bepop in college. I was either too busy or maybe just watching a few episodes with friends I wasn't really paying enough attention. Maybe i was too young I finished cowboy bepop for the first time yesterday, and I've seen plenty of R rated anime film by this point but this show has the most relatable adult themes I've ever seen. What a masterpeice. And theres a movie!? Must get my hands on it
"You feel a little out of place, like you just lost a family of sorts" Man that is exactly what I just felt. I just watched Cowboy Bebop for the first time. I am 26 and knew of Bebop, but never got around to watching it. I have been watching anime since I was a kid but for some reason it never reached my plate. Once I finished it now, I felt so empty and like crying. Even though everything was self contained and finished I was so hungry for more.
A beautifully written/editted video essay highlighting everything that I love about Cowboy Bebop. I still regularly listen to the amazing OST, and Blue always gives me the feels. Man, this is making me want to rewatch the series, again! XD Thank you for this awesome video! Also, this reminds me that I really need to watch Samurai Champloo. XD
The thing I definitely enjoy from your videos is when you go over the history of the series and its production. This video for example I have never heard about how cowboy bebop didn't air all the episodes originally, how it was funded, and how much effort it took just to actually make the series. The backstory to this series is one I rarely hear anyone talk about and its interesting to finally hear about it in detail.

Your essays into the heart and soul and mind of anime are probably the best I've ever seen. And I've actively been into the genre since around 1992, and was exposed through Voltron, Robotech, etc. in the 80s. Thank you, and please keep it up!!!
This is without a doubt the finest retrospective I've ever had the pleasure of viewing. Thank you for reminding me of all those wonderful late night adult swim viewings.
Man I just watched space dandy (first time), samurai champloo (first time) and Cowboy Bebop (second or third time can't remember) within a span of a month. After watching all of them, it is hard to pick which one is better but Bebop definitely hit me with the feels the most. My perception of the show has changed with every viewing. My first time was when I was a little shit in middle school. I absolutely loved it and hated that it was over, but I missed the point of the show. This time I just felt empty and depressed after the end of it. Nothing lasts forever, you can't run from your past, and you can't hide your vulnerabilities from other people. Still need to rewatch the movie, but goddamn, there are few shows that force introspection like this one. The main thing I can take away from this is you can always mend the past no matter the hardship, cause you're gonna carry that weight.
That first episode sets the bar so high than continually exceeds it and each consecutive watch feels fresh, few shows are capable of this and when found need to be coveted;P Favorite episode: Mushroom Samba Runner up: Toys in the Attic Favorite Character: Ed Anyone else want to post their faves?
my favourite essayist doing a video on my favourite show is truly a treat. absolutely loved this video, and really amazing work as always! perfectly spoken with all the justice bebop deserves.
20 years after it first came to the US Cowboy Bebop is on every major streaming service and not just the ones that only handle anime, that really says something right there.

Nooooo! Dubbed.. 😭
This show has only made me sadder as I've gotten older...I finally understand.
~= You're gonna carry that weight=~
Rewatching at 27 compared to 15... holy fuck dude. I finally understand everything properly, what it means to carry that weight. I re-watched Bebop at the exact right time in my life, this show helped me in more ways than I can describe.
@@licensetoshred I've done, I believe, three full runs of the show (though only in full chronological order once), and went back to certain episodes so many times I've lost count, and every time it makes me feel something different. Think I need another start to finish viewing, as a matter of fact. Been a bit.
@@burninsherman1037 Yeah I've already started another rewatch now! I just cannot get over Bebop. It's gotta be my #1 anime by far. Totally picking up whatcha putting down! :)
@@licensetoshred Same here. I remember first seeing it at ~14 and was blown away, but didn't really grasp the concepts outside of the action. Wisdom has certainly helped on that. Now, every year, I make sure to go through Bebop.
@@licensetoshred Great #1 to have. It's the best.
The Beyond Ghibli title cards were fantastic.
What I love the most about Bebop is the music. It's just spectacular.
Second thing I love most is that it ENDS after one season. All other shows just keep going forever until you get sick of them.
Every time I hear someone say 3... 2... 1... I always want to say "Let's Jam".
I don't think there is any other video that depicts Cowboy Bebop with such love. Thank you for your work :)
Watanabe's debut was actually MACROSS PLUS (1994). In fact, if you look at the character designs in those you'll see similarities to Faye, Julia, and even Spike.
thanks bro. hadnt heard of that one before. going to watch it now.
How can watanabe made me more in love with his work? Love macross!!
That's the appropriate response." Such a great production.
it's hard to capture how insanely cool this was when we all first saw it back in the day. it was a revelation
About time someone delivered the comprehensive overview Cowboy Bebop deserved. Every other review I've seen has been a broken record, only describing the same one or two keypoints regarding the show's "maturity".
Super eye patch wolfs video is on bebop is fantastic
Super Eyepatch Wolf is always an exception, since he's laser-focused on each show's personal impact and production
@@ToonCrate ua-cam.com/video/lkXFBPGZpTM/v-deo.html you owe it to yourself to watch this analysis then
And Anime Philosopher's video on Bebop was remarkable
Please watch criswell's it's extremely well done. Not comparing this video to that, but it's very good as well
I could listen to people eruditely sing the praises of Cowboy Bebop all day long.
I just want you to know that it's not okay to play with people's hearts like this, just like the show your review ended too quickly.
Faye I miss you girl.
I just remember feeling empty at the end. I still don't get it.
You felt empty? Then you did get it. It just hasn't got you yet.
Almost crying...
Same. I always feel empty busting my nut
One of these days, we're going to have fully immersive VR.
You know where you can find me, when that happens.
Just like everyone else
9:40 "Because there's just that chemistry and just that kind of...alchemic-"
*drops everything to clap hands together*
One of my all time favorites. I watch it every time it’s on.
"Pierrot Le Fou" is by far my favorite episode hands down
This is the greatest love letter to the greatest anime. It made my heart ache.
Loving the title, loving the thumbnail. Loving this channel.
"tittle"
thumbnail makes it all. Style is everything!
Loved this comment :)
Loving you all.
My favorite anime ever. Such good artists, directors, producers and writers! Nothing like Cowboy Bebop. Nothing!
NNOOTTHHIINNGG
any form of art even :(
Having watched the show multiple times in each language, I would highly recommend watching both. Multiple times. In each language.
This is the best bebop video essay on this site, and that is saying quite a lot.
“The seatbelts - road to the west” what a soulful song
One of the best, if not the best analyses on the greatest anime of all time. Thank you for this!
"Its snarling jazz soundtrack was (if you'll excuse the pun) instrumental in thematically grounding the series."
I will not excuse the pun. Own it like a man! "No pun intended" is a sign of weakness of character.
I almost never leave comments under youtube videos but I'll write one down here just to say how impressed I am by the work you put into creating this video and how much I enjoyed watching it.
I’m not crying, you are... this was beautiful , thank you
Such a great summary of Bebop and its impact! Thanks for putting this together
what i loved about this anime was the depth it had from the start to its inconclusive end. so much emotions ran within the series, and it felt like i lost a friend once i finished it.
Watching this is still better than all 10hours of the live action combined.
Your structure of this video has not gone unnoticed, beautiful work man. I'm legit having goosebumps watching this.
i actually cant put into words how much i love this show. my all time favorite piece of media ever made. even watching this, hearing the music, puts a smile on my face. i watch it a few times a year.
Bepop was my introduction into Anime, Dandy was the cement that is my love for this artstyle. So damm good.
Everytime I go back to watch our cowboys, I will also watch this. Thank you.
Thank You
Cowboy bebop is one of the few anime that you appreciate even more so years after watching it the first time ⚡️
this is a really well written video essay! very accurate and deep without spoiling a thing too
This brought such a smile to my face. Haven’t watched it in years, but it’s such an magnificent story and great show.
Man, the way you write is so inspiring. So glad to have found your channel.
I'm much the same way. Trigun isn't a bad way to spend some time, but if you enjoy Fantasy watch Berserk and Overlord. I can't get enough of either.
If you want an inventive world, try Twelve Kingdoms. If you want top notch character drama, watch Ping Pong the Animation. And if you need another romp in space, Banner of the Stars is very nice.
I would recommend Evangelion and FLCL season 1
I don't believe it was rushed, to me it seems that Spike's luck had ran out as he set out on his last adventure.
Samurai champloo or baccano
Rewatching the series in anticipation of the live-action and boy can't I wait.
You deserve millions of views, absolutely stunning work. Love every single one of your videos.
How the hell does this not have multiple millions of views. This is such a quality video
a beautiful love letter to a amazing show. Can't wait for more great stuff from you man!
I heard of cowboy bepop in college. I was either too busy or maybe just watching a few episodes with friends I wasn't really paying enough attention. Maybe i was too young
I finished cowboy bepop for the first time yesterday, and I've seen plenty of R rated anime film by this point but this show has the most relatable adult themes I've ever seen. What a masterpeice. And theres a movie!? Must get my hands on it
Bravo! A great reminder to the fans of the series and a recommendation to those who haven't seen it yet. Thank you!
Even though everything was self contained and finished I was so hungry for more.
bloody hell mate, this video is beautiful, thank you so very much *hands him a fistful of woolongs*
oh wow......your use of music and your analysis is so nostalgic and beautiful! thank you so much for the wonderful video
The show that got me into anime. And I can still feel the pang from when it ended.
Can I just say the title of this is freaking fantastic? I love it because it really fits the style of Bebop as almost a future age western.
XD
Found this gem when i was trying to fill the void of only getting to watch 1 season of firefly....fallen in love with both of these space cowboys.
I'm biased as someone who loves this show unabashedly, but this is one of your best videos. I am so excited for the Evangelion one!
This was like watching the entire series in twenty minutes! Great review capturing one of my favorite animes of all time.
And now I'm crying all over my keyboard. Thank you for reminding me how much I love this show. Great essay.

Thank you for this cover. It brings back memories, sweet and bitter, everything comes flooding down.
Tank! Remains one of the few theme songs of any show i nearly always let play.
Oddly, more than one of the others are also by Yoko Kanno...
That first episode sets the bar so high than continually exceeds it and each consecutive watch feels fresh, few shows are capable of this and when found need to be coveted;P
Favorite episode: Mushroom Samba
Runner up: Toys in the Attic
Favorite Character: Ed

my favourite essayist doing a video on my favourite show is truly a treat. absolutely loved this video, and really amazing work as always! perfectly spoken with all the justice bebop deserves.
I've waited so long for this and u did not disappoint on this essay. I thank you BG
20 years after it first came to the US Cowboy Bebop is on every major streaming service and not just the ones that only handle anime, that really says something right there.
Wow that was great, you are talented!
Great homage to a fantastic out of this world anime.
I’ve loved your work for years now. But I had to come back specifically to this little island of a video, because the live action version is out on Netflix.
