  • Today I'm reacting, critiquing, and analyzing American Psycho outfits in Episode 1 of Film Fashion Critique: I'm mainly going through the outfits of the characters in the famous business card scene from American Psycho, and we're going to see if the outfits given to them do indeed reflect the personality of the characters and as well as giving my own style advice in this film fashion analysis.

    The amount of attention that Bateman pays to brands and status symbols, both in the book and in the film, to me is a perfect encapsulation of his inner psychopathy.
    He isn't focusing on all this because he's passionate about style or because it brings him joy, he isn't finding a personal 'look' (he wears exactly the same sleek, expensive trash that all his equally vapid colleagues wear), or having fun with it, or experimenting: he sees it simply as a way to better disguise himself as an attractive, powerful person instead of the cruel, hateful, morally repugnant... thing, he actually is.
    To him, it's merely another way to use status and aesthetics to conform to a convincing simulacra of a respectable, prestigious human being, despite the fact that, on the inside: he really is just a repellant, utterly souless, inhuman monster.

    • @lizz9896
      @lizz9896 2 роки тому +4

      İ think thats also pretty clear in the movie too when he tells his girlfriend that he just wants to fit in. and through the narrative alone too, how everything is described through branding and detail and is in constant comparison to what he does or doesn't have (through others). also, the trait alone, people who are this obsessed with branding, solely only care for others opinions rather than their own. otherwise they wouldn't have spent so much on whatever the thing is when there's probably a just as equal, in quality, for much less; like the way a 60 dollar t shirt and a 500 dollar one has no difference in quality (just branding), but indeed there's a quality difference in a 20 dollar t shirt to a 60 one.

    • @exception05
      @exception05 Рік тому +1

      Yes, he wants to fit in, but you forget that for him, as a psychopath, there is a problem in filling the inner void. Psychopaths are good at mimicking others, and apparently, for Bateman, this is all a way to acquire new abilities of this mimicry and be able to understand the smallest details. What, in my opinion, concerns Bateman is the lack of inner emptiness in others and indifference to him. He does not care about the indifference of his other comrades, who are also just empty shells. The only reason he didn't kill Luis is because it's hard for a psychopath to kill those who are proof that there are people in the world who can love them.

    • @parisgermain523

    Probably one of the biggest disinformation's in horological history: Patrick Bateman (played by actor Cristian Bale) never wore a Rolex Datejust in the classic 2000 movie American Psycho, because Rolex didn’t want to be associated with an evil movie character.
    The watch in the movie is a discontinued 38mm two-tone stainless steel Seiko with a fluted bezel reference SNXJ90, featuring a white colored dial with day and date display feature, on a jubilee bracelet.
    Its resemblance to the Datejust is of course unquestionable, but still - it is a Seiko.

    • @DemetriosLevi
      @DemetriosLevi  2 роки тому +88

      I know this, but it's *supposed* to be a Rolex hence I said Bateman is wearing it, not Christian Bale. Just as neither of them are really wearing Valentino suits. Watches are no exception but horologists never seem to understand that

    A very interesting fact about outfits and brands in general in this movie is that because of financial reasons they could'nt afford to cite a LOT of brands that are in the source material (the book) in which brands that are mentionned are very thought out to fit a specific situation or the character of Bateman, and also there are a lot of them. Because the movie during production was already in a difficult situation in terms of budget (multiples obstacles during production, and also Lionsgate at the time was not that big of a production company) they could only do so much in that regard. Considering that they still did a pretty damn good job conveying narratives or character traits from outfits.

      We all analyze people, usually subconsciously, but it's unavoidable to humans, but I don't judge as to mean condemn; that's the major difference. Plus, this is purely because it's a movie and the costume design is 100% intentional, so in reality it's judging the work of the costume designer...

    excellent analysis. May I please ask, that outfit at 12:56, where is it from, a gorgeous jacket. A suggestion for a video: where and how to buy suiting (and lining and interlining) for a bespoke or MTM suit in Europe? For most people their local tailor will have a rather limited range of fabrics to choose from so we have to go online, where there's a lot to choose from and samples are available but it's kinda hard to say from a fabric how a suit will feel and drape. Differences in weight, thickness, weave etc., what manufacturers would you recommend apart from the outrageously expensive Zegna? Cupro Bemberg seems easy enough to choose but what about the horsehair, what details to pay attention to? Should undercollar be melton or melton+linen? An episode on linen would also be timely, what kind of linen to choose, what weight, too heavy and it doesn't feel right, too light and it crumples, does it have to be Irish linen, which colors (I've seen a gorgeous black linen suit on a Japanese guy, I know about black suits but it looked great on him, with black suede Chelsea boots)...
