    Getting rid of the Sergachev contract was huge and a great move for the team with what we got in return. But then not even reapproaching Stamkos, that was dumb.

      And how good are the caps, pens, and kings? Time moves on. Stamkos' era was coming to an end and over paying him could easily turn bad in 2 to 3 seasons it's just natural.

    • @inchworm226
      @inchworm226 Місяць тому +2

      Lol. These clowns replying. Two of those teams made the playoffs and the other was on the bubble. All 3 of those players had 65+ points, and Crosby was even a dark horse MVP candidate. Those teams fell short because of other missteps by management (For instance, the Pens going after an aging d-man in Karlsson with his hefty contract). Also can't begin to quantify the loss in locker room presence and leadership with the loss of Stamkos. You might want to believe the players & staff are these robotic androids expected to set aside emotions while being paid handsomely, but the reality is everyone is human and that human element needs to be properly managed as much as anything else. Treat people as numbers on a spreadsheet, and things will unravel. Seen it time and again in every occupation, not just sports.

    Much respect for JBB. What he did this year takes a lot of guts, and goes against the grain of what most NHL GMs would do. JBB stuck his neck out and went for a defensively-oriented mini-refresh, which is the only hope Tampa has to stay legitimately competitive in this decade. Remember that Stamkos had a -21 this last season despite his 40 goals. Oh, and he's 34. The 29-year-old Guentzel netted 30 despite missing 20% of the season, and posted a +25 while doing it. Add in the return of McD, landing an up-and-coming Moser, offloading an expensive and inconsistent Sergachev, and bagging a top-tier prospect, and this is looking like a team that has serious intent to stay relevant.

      Fully agreed! Losing stammer stinks but this isn’t a museum, we need to get younger and more competitive and this offseason has taken so many strides towards that

    I would just like to know, what about removing Steven Stamkos from this roster makes us more competitive moving forward? He’s a franchise player. He was the only player who really showed up in the playoffs this season? But removing him sets up our future of success? I must be missing something

    • @Blackwater06
      @Blackwater06 Місяць тому +14

      Guentzel is a MUCH better 5v5 player than Stamkos is, all the numbers show it. He's also over 4 years younger, better defensively, and faster. He's one of the top forwards in the league. Stamkos asked for too much money. His primary benefit to the team is via the power play, but I'm going to be interested in seeing how well he does in Nashville without Kuch, one of the best creators in league history, helping set him up for all those power play goals.
      It's simple, Guentzel is the better player, and younger. JBB's job is to manage our team, not manage fan emotions. Fans get attached to certain players and then want management to make decisions based on those emotions. JBB knew this wouldn't align with fan sentiment, but he did his job and made the correct decision regardless.

However when looking at what’s best for the future of the team, JBB is doing the right thing in my opinion. Yes it’s awesome that ovi and Sid are still on and probably gonna retire with their respective teams, however look at the state of said team, mediocrity! With stammer, the trajectory of the bolts is on par with both of the previously mentioned teams (2 first round eliminations back to back, aging core, etc). From an objective point of view it makes sense to get younger and extend the win now window. It sucks that we may never know what truly happened and why they couldn’t come to an agreement. But hearing stammer say today “trying to hang on to something that doesn’t want to hang on to you” is an absolute gut punch. From everything I’ve seen and read I think stammer felt disrespected probably going back to last summer when JBB wouldn’t talk about an extension. Fans, I’ve been a Lightning fan since 1993. As much as Stammer has meant to the fans and the community, it’s his on ice stats that hurt his chances of staying. Yes, he scored 40 goals and 62 assists for 102 points… BUT he was also -21 in +/- at the same time, which was the worst on the team this past season, meaning when he was on the ice, he was a defensive liability. It’s hard, but Guentzel was a +25 in +/- with nearly the same goals and assists. Yes, it’s an empty feeling, but in order to stay competitive, we have to make moves. Toronto hasn’t made any moves to their core, and look at them. Running it back every year, and getting ousted in the first round.

    People pointing out Stammer's +/- and defensive liabilities as to why he was let go... The entire team was at a minus halfway through the season. Comparing Stammer's +/- to Guentzel's is comparing apples to oranges. BTW, Kuch likely lost the MVP voting because of his +/- and defensive effort as well. The team as a whole struggled 5v5. If JBB wants to clean house, maybe he should start with the assistant coach in charge of the defensive schemes and his inability to implement it with the roster we have. The worst part about this situation is JBB didn't even bother with a counter offer after freeing up cap space. $4M AAV @ 8 years (same total contract value as the one he signed in Nashville) was feasible and would've made up for the money he left on the table in 2016 to stay with this team. Just another reminder to never make sacrifices for your bosses, because there's no guarantee they'll return the favor.

    People who asks how does removing Stamkos make the team more competitive. Stamkos made half of his goals on PP. He was a twenty goal scorer at 5 vs 5. I liked Stamkos, but we have to think about the future of the Lightning, Stamkos is not getting better while Guentzel is 29 and skates like hell so Point and Kuch can have a great winger for them and maybe Guentzel can help Sheary scoring a little more. He was a disaster last year in Tampa. The Sergachev trade made us younger with Geekie and Moser but also the McDonagh Moser combined compensates the fact that Sergachev left. Geekie, Howard and getting some picks. Finally, Brisebois is thinking about the future of the organization because our prospects pool was getting dryer than the desert

      @allannixon5113 Tell me you don't actually follow hockey statistics without telling me... 😂😂😂. Stammer took a team cap contract willingly forfeiting millions to the greater good of the team for EIGHT YEARS. He was paid under value and was willing to continue to be paid below value to retire with the team. But yeah, overpaying... riiiiiiiiiight.
      Explain how Heddy got around $3 million more than what Stamkos was reported to be willing to accept, despite being the same age. Or how McD, who is 5 years older, got a contract close to what Steven was willing to drop to, especially considering McD only asked to be traded back to the Lightning, telling the Nashville GM, "I want to return to Stammer and the boys." Stammer ranked 15th in regular-season goals and 26 in points last season, but thanks for your input.

    JBB is hurting the organization more then helping it. Giving up Gourde, Killorn, Goodrow, Coleman, Sergachev (why on earth did he give sergy that awful deal?), entire Mcdonagh case, pretty much all of our draft picks and now the face of the entire franchise.
    JBB knows how to speak, but it doen't work anymore since the decline of the team has been fastforwarded this much.
    Trust has took a serious hit.
    Why the fans should cheer on a organization like this, if this is the way they handle people and the littlest pumps (meaning the small difference between what Stamkos asked and what JBB offered).
    Being a truly great franchise (f.e.Barcelona, Real Madrid) is about respecting the players with high status in there.
