      I agree with Mr. Hofmann, not the right hobby for you. I have been collecting for 45 years, have over 3,700 LP's mostly garnered at garage sales and thrift stores in the 80's, 90's and early 2000's when everyone was ditching their collections for "perfect sound forever" (usually paying 25 cents each). What a joke. A friend of mine had a Linn Sondek LP12 and played some LP's against their CD equivalents in 1984 when the Compact Disc was introduced. No comparison. I do have CD's, often if I don't have a band properly represented on vinyl and want to know what I have been missing; example: R.E.M. Nothing on vinyl so picked up "Part Lies, Part Truth, Part Garbage..etc". But when I really want to listen, I mean really listen, vinyl is the way to go. By the way, this friend went through a rough spot in 1991 and sold me his Linn LP12. And Mr. Bucknee, you aren't willing to spend $100? Hate to tell you a basic Linn starts about $5,000 and you can go up to $12,000. And before you have a stroke, there is a turntable that retails for over $100,000. I guess it just depends on where your priorities are.

      Well, you can have much problems with used record players. A good, refurbished used record player is in the same price range like those presented in this video for the seller wants to see some money for the maintenance he has done to the device. Also, most used record players do not come with an pre-amp. So, buying a used record player suddenly can become more expensive, because you have to buy a preamp or you have to buy an amp with build-in preamp.
      If you are in vintage hifi and you have some knowledge about record players buying a used one is of course an option. But if you are a starter and have no idea of what to consider when entering the new hobby, buying one of those record players presented in this video is the far better option.

    I've got my at lp 60 today and immediately fell in love with it. It might not be the best build turntable but it has everything you need to get started. Also the lack of adjustability isn't that bad for a complete beginner as I am. Everything comes prebuild (you just need to hook in the belt) and you are ready to play. It makes the first step really easy and just let you enjoy the records. If you have 50 bucks more to spend get the bt version, it has a detachable rca cable (unlike the USB version), in fact it comes with a 3,5 mm jack and a 3,5 mm to rca cable and also let you play your records over Bluetooth headphones or speakers which is really convenient. I've got mine in germany for just a little bit shy of 150€.

    For those on BOTH sides of the "Affordable" debate--The Law of Diminishing Returns. A $10 turntable is a Billion times better than NO turntable, while a $100,000 'table is not Twice as good as a $50,000 'table. It is MY opinion that ~$150 retail is the Start Point. Less, runs a greater risk of Forever ruining your albums(a $100,000 'table ruins albums with improper set-up). Dirty albums ruin the stylus, degrades the enjoyment/quality factor, and permanently ruin albums. Having 50+ records, a great inexpensive Lifetime purchase is a record washer($80-100, Spin Clean), used Once every 10-25 plays, and then a Carbon Fiber brush(on Ebay for $7-10), for Surface dust BEFORE you set the needle down. I'm looking at buying my first turntable soon. At least in Australia there appears to be a hands down winner for someone on a tight budget. The Sherwood PM9805 costs roughly the same as the LP60 (around 250 Australian dollars, or around 180 for a factory refurbished one) but has a replaceable headshell etc, adjustable tracking force and antiskate, target light, strobe, s-shape tone arm, pitch control etc.
    In fact it almost looks like a copy of the LP-120, at a much lower price and with a couple of things moved around. Only features I think it doesn't have are height adjust and it doesn't do 78 rpm.

    I have the LP120, however it's NOT built like a tank. I took it apart and ripped out the preamp and the sound was 120x better. The capacitors in the built in preamp suppress the highs and mids even when switched to bypass. While I was in there ripping out the preamp it's 100% cheap plastic garbage with a 10lb metal plate glued to the bottom to make it feel like you're getting a quality heavy table. The anti skate fails all buyers... if you test the anti-skate on a CD or side D of a record with no grooves you'll see the anti skate absolutely fail. Mines on 6-7 when it should be tracking at 2. This caused the worst inner groove distortion ever when it was set to 2 until I finally figured out it was the anti skate. The platter is also extremely thin and you can here movement/motor occasionally during playback when walking or closing the lid which I fixed by buying an isolated audio wall shelf. The counter weight also needs an upgrade it's not heavy enough.
    That being said. I love it for the price. With a ripped out preamp (pre-ampectomy), a cork/rubber mat, a heavier counter weight, a solid music hall external preamp, a nagoaka mp-110 cart/stylus, and isolated table in the air with a glass audio wall shelf it's a whole nother WORLD of a table. If I had to do it all over again I'd get the debut carbon.... The amount of money and time I spent upgrading my table I could of just bought a pro-ject.
    Great video!... But definitely not a tank it's that stupid cheap metal plate that's lying to you.

      Totally agree with taking the built in preamp out. I had one at one point. Sounded like it was in a closet compared to my other vintage TT. Took that sucker out, and it totally came to life. I've since sold it, and now have two vintage TT's instead. Take out that preamp, and it's a great bang for the buck.

    • @mattgaruccio
      @mattgaruccio 7 років тому +1

      Agreed. The sound was insane post-preamp. It's crystal clear now vs muddy water with the built in preamp....defeats the point of listening to vinyl with the preamp that table has to offer.

      I agree, I don’t have the LP-120 but I have the LP-60 which sounded fantastic on my Harmon Kardon desk top speakers. Since then I have changed my setup and have a 7.1 surround sound, all Klipcsh speakers. Connecting my LP-60 to my system is sad because the LP-60 pre amp has no power to play through these speakers. I will be upgrading to the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon with a great pre amp

    I am brand new to vinyl. My wife has a briefcase style record player that we just started using and after my first visit to a record store, I’m hooked. I picked up Nirvanas Never mind record to kick off my collection but when we got home her record player stopped working. I went to one of my local shops but was overwhelmed buy the prices of things and lack of knowledge. This video has seriously filled in a lot of information i was needing! I think I’m going to look into the second record player purely because my wife would kill me if i just dropped hundreds on a turn table. Thanks for the great video! Huge help!

    Personally I suggest any new comers into vinyl get a vintage turntable, 1965-1983, you should be able to find a near mint or even mint one on ebay for a steal, some decent brands to note, Pioneer, Gerrard, Technica, and many more but remember, brand isn't everything.

  • @alainmoret5887
    @alainmoret5887 4 роки тому +2

    You have to mention that is important to check whether you are able to modify the height of the arm. It is important when you wish to change the stylus for another brand (Audio-Technica to Orthofon for example). Because of the angle of the needle on the LP and then to choose the Baerwald or the Loefgren alignment protactor. Most of the normal prices Turntables haven't the ability to set up or down the arm of the cell.

    I would never go with a pair of powered speakers for a turn table. You should always run it thru a good receiver so you can adjust your volume, bass, and treble. To fit the sound of your room. If not you will only get a flat response out of the sound. As for my tuner table I have a vintage Technics SL 1200 mkII running into a Kenwood KR-V7030 A/V receiver pushing a pair of Cerwin Vega SL15 passive speakers. For classic rock, and metal. This system is a monster. But it will also bump some retro 80's bass mixes to the point that my neighbors that live about a half a mile away from me can hear it. ( I am glad I live out in the country and can get away with it. If I had closer neighbors. I think the cops would be here a lot. LOL)
