To anyone out there watching this video in order to setup their turntables : don’t forget to re-balance the tone arm AFTER adjusting your cartridge. Moving the cartridge up or down the head shell will affect the balance, so it’s crucial to redo the balancing.

Indeed, and this was the most common setup from the dawn of solid state amps right up until the early 2000s. Pretty much every solid state hi-fi amp had a phono stage built in. Many good vintage amps have a phono pre-amp as good as, if not better, than many of the pre-amps on sale today, and always better than one built into the turntable itself.
      As for my setups.
      Main setup
      Rega RP1 with AT-440MLb cart
Pioneer AV Amp (with built in phono stage)
      Mission 701 speakers

I sadly watched this video AFTER buying the popular all in one.
Fortunately I own a set of Logitech 2.1 speakers to boost the sound.
      But I've always avoided vinyl.
After playing them on even this "cheap" set up. I'm just going to convert it all to Digital and go back to my digital music.
Even with my all in one set up.
I still use gloves (cuz its 2022 so gloves are common due to a virus running rampant)
And have to brush off some dust due to the records being idle for at least 2 or 3 decades. (Idk if my dad ever played them since I was born or since marrying my mom. It totally gives off bachelor Dad vibes.)
They even smell like my grandmother's house. (Its a rare smell I only find in my dad's untouched stuff.)
Long story short, I did a swap out of attic junk. The records came down while the Christmas tree is going up.
Again Im super delicate cuz I NEVER touched a vinyl record muchless played them. And sadly my dad has passed so its a double whammy of my dad's music and my grandmother's smell. My mom cant even guess the things I'm feeling cuz there's just certain things that just resonated with being a young man free of being a family man.
Idk, maybe I'm seeing too deeply into things. But she was married young, but he settled in his 30s.
Things like doing all this musical gear set up. Having DIY projects to work on.

Good timing. I used your short videos to do my first install last week. I'm not a technical person and I don't have steady hands, so it took a LONG time of being very very very careful, but I finally did it and it sounded AMAZING. Then yesterday a very very very bad accident occurred, and my brand new painstakingly installed Goldring E3 got knocked and the cantilever bent. So now I get to start all over, a little more broke, and I occasionally stop crying. Good videos, thanks.

Hey Jared! Don't forget that it's pretty common for many companies to have integrated amplifiers that have a preamp and amp combined too. Even more high-end companies like Peachtree Audio and McIntosh have these options! So there's pretty much an option for any two of the Full audio set-up components to be combined.

One other platter mat out there is the acrylic platter mat. I’ve recently gotten one (mine is blue, but you can get it in different colors) and I’m impressed. Before I got my acrylic mat, I was using both a rubber mat and cork mat together, since rubber is good for bass and cork is good for treble. The acrylic mat handles both quite well on its own (I can only tell a slight difference). Depending on what color you want and where you buy them, they go for around $21, give or take some cents.
If you haven’t tried one, Jarrett, I encourage you to check it out! I promise your ears will thank you!!! 😀😀😀

Speaker set up: Polk audio monitor 7, Yamaha-1000M, Polk audio monitor 10, KEF reference model 105.2, Some old pair of McIntosh solid wood speakers, a series of garbage HomePods/Alexa lol. Streamer/DAC: Bluesound NODE space X… record players: pioneer PL - 50, U-turn Orbit. Very much open to recommendations based on what I’ve got and what I might be missing!

Like your videos. And the AT LP 120 is a great starter turntable. I had it as my first, then upgraded to a Project Debut. Since five years I have a Clearaudio Concept, which is on a completely different level. I bought this together with a Primaluna Prologue Amp, an EAR 834P PreAmp and some Sonus Faber Toy Tower Speakers. Could have bought a small car for the money at that time, but you have to know your priorities :D
While I absolutely love my setup and am sure it will last me a lifetime, I agree with the statement that the best turntable setup is the one you con afford. Can only get an AT LP 60 with some modest active speakers? Go for it! You can always get something better later, and sell your old one or give it to someone else who wants to get into the hobby. And what is great about your videos is that you show young people that want to get into the hobby that they do not need to sell a kidney to get something that will sound nice, and that all this setup is not as complex as it seems.
Keep up the great work, dude!

Hi Jared, great video. This has been a big help. I'm hoping you can add a comment based on an issue I have run into. I just purchased a technics sl-1350. I've balanced out the tonearm, but don't have the ability to height adjust the tonearm so that is parallel with the LP's I'll be playing. I don't believe it's adjustable on this table. What should those of us without an arm adjustment do? Should we just stack an extra mat or two onto the platter?

Do you have a video or link that covers the 3 component setup that does not include the preamp. This is the setup I had before moving and trying to remember as I set everything up. For added info, I am using a Technic Quartz Synthesizer receiver that, yes, I do have a cassette deck connected to with the speakers running through the receiver. I am stuck how how to connect the Numark Pro TT-1 turntables (that previously were also connected to the receiver but I would now like to connect to a Pioneer DJM 909 (or NI Traktor Kontroller) I will be getting later in the month but for now could you help with getting the turntables connect to the Pioneer mixer (pretty sure once I know switching to the Traktor will be a breeze once I know the basics). Thanks and look forward to your quick response. Thanks again ❤

Great great video. Question. I've struggled with cartridge alignment and minimizing tracing distortion on the inner grooves. I've read that due to the physics of vinyl playback that this distortion can only be minimized, never totally eliminated.
When aligning the cartridge, how do you minimize parallax problems when aligning? Do you work with the table on the floor so you can look directly down on it? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Funny story: I picked up a third turntable about three years ago used - the AT LP120 usb. For what I got it for, I love it. Then my buddy in Seattle bought a brand new one. It sounds great too. But after a while he got the bug to get another TT and he wanted a belt drive. So, we talked about the stuff that's been made available over the last decade or so. I told him he really wants to keep the replaceable headshell feature and why.
So, what did he get? The same Fluance you chose. and he loves the frosted platter. He loves it. He can even swap cartridges between turntables easily because they take the same headshell mount. Interestingly, we're both 66 (we've been friends since high school) and our ears are not top notch. Being in a dozen bands as a bass player didn't help mine. I bring this up because we pretty much consider his Ortofon Blue and the AT 95 green to be "close enough for government work", That is, they both sound fine because we don't do any critical listening of the cartridges. We just do critical listening of the MUSIC. And they all sound great.
And because the AT turntable has a built in pre-amp, he runs the fluance into the phono pre-amp of his Marantz 2230 and runs the AT into the aux input. So he gets to play "DJ" as we listen to his favorites (mostly blues live albums) and sip our Glenfiddich 12.
Listening to vinyl is an experience that surpasses the mere music on which it's based.

Some records are actually cut at varying angles to others. Height adjust can be used as well to compensate for this. “ Level “ is not the best spot for height adjustment. As all pressing cutting lathes use a slight angle on the groove, for technical reasons for groove tracking , frequency distribution etc. you can slightly tiny amounts less or more on the tracking force. Tracking force can vary a tiny bit from Specs depending on the table and arm you have. Great vid on setup though excellent info.

Very detailed, nice! But one question. After getting aligning the cartridge with the screws, wouldn't it be better to do the tracking force test again? Cause maybe you changed it by pulling the cartridge a bit further out or pushing it more into so it changes the weight.
    Or am I wrong?

Have done it hundred times but God bless you for a such detailed explanation. Maybe you should mention protractor as well. And anti-skate is not that simple as well (you'd better to have calibration disc).
    But overall great video

Hey Jared, what about acrylic platter mats? I love them and they are static free and easy to clean. I would much rather have the acrylic mat than the felt mats that gather lots of dust and various debris. I love your channel and all of your content. So this re-edit tutorial b/c you combined all the elements into one, is more universal in terms of all the brands and style of TT's out there? Kind of helps that the AT looks very similar to the Technics in design and function. I bought Technics TT, tho it has sat in my room b/c I am wanting to set it up properly do doing research on how. I also bought a calibration mat for it, specific to the Technics line, it has all kinds of lines and measuring guides on it. I have yet to sit down and do all of this. I am about to, but what is your opinion on the calibration mats made available out there?

You should adjusr the height first before the tracking force. It does change when the height is wrong

Hey, I have a question for you. I own an AT-LP120X and I just read in the Audio Technica site that the stock AT-VMN95e elliptical stylus wears out and should be replaced after 300 hours of playback. What's your take on that? To me, it seems that 300 hours is too soon for the stylus to get ruined... I've probably used it for about 400 and it still sounds good to me, but I'm worried I might be hurting my records.

I have a crosley t150 and it came with a pair of speakers. Do I need an amplifier for it? It plays just fine and is a way better improvement over their all in one record players.

Can you play 10 inch vinyl on a 1210 turntable, as you mentioned the stylus is only good for 7" and 12" ?
