One may disagree with some of the policies he stood for, but there is no denying his humbleness in defeat when he asked all those who supported him to come together and at least try to support Obama's administration. Rest in peace Senator John McCain, tonight I remember your love of this country. Your speech brings tears to my eyes. There is so much integrity, honor, and respect in your words. America was blessed to have you. I pray that the United States will never loose what makes it a great country.
McCain knew from the start of the race that it would take a miracle to win, and he consciously decided to run the race in a dignified and honorable way. It got ugly at times, and that's fine, but he refused to sink to the depths to which so many in his party tried to drag him. His arguments with Obama were over policy, not character. Though I did not agree with his positions, I know that McCain genuinely believed that he was working to improve the US.
It never should have been. The gop was moving in a good direction after the loss against obama (reaching out to minorities, etc) but this movement in the party got highjacked by trump. I really do believe that when he’s gone, america will become that shining city on a hill again which ronald reagan dreamed of. There is no reason for hate. There is no reason for division. United we are strong, divided we shall fall.
I'm a staunch left winger, but ALL democracies need effective representation across the political spectrum. The US needs an effective Republican Party, and I worry that Trump may have dealt them an almost mortal blow. I remember dropping everything and rushing to watch this live on TV on election night of 2008. I remember being moved by this concession speech as I watched it, which I though showed the good character and personality of John McCain. This is one of my best memories from election night 2008, and I'm watching it now for the first time in twelve years. I see I remembered this all very accurately. This concessions speech shows us what our country used to be, especially when individuals like John McCain were around. I saw John McCain fall ill, publish his last memoir which he wrote knowing his time was limited, and ultimately pass away. In his last TV interview McCain was optimistic, saying that he was an "an 81 year old man who was blessed to have had such a great and fortunate life." It doesn't get any more humble and admirable than that, especially considering the hell he went through for 7 years as a POW in the infamous "Hanoi Hilton." His conduct as a POW was astonishingly courageous and admirable, especially when he rejected an offer to be released in a POW exchange, standing by the old military saying, "first one in, first one out." McCain was a true gentleman all throughout his fascinating and historically significant life, and his passing was a loss to our country regardless of your political opinions. I was saddened and insulted as an American that Trump did not visit John McCain's casket, though I'm sad to say, I wasn't surprised. But what I found most impressive and reflective of McCain's personality was the fact that he asked his former political opponent in the 2000 Presidential election primary, President George W. Bush, and his former opponent in the 2008 Presidential election, President Barack Obama, to read his eulogy. May you rest in peace, John Sidney McCain III.
A man of character, presence, leadership, incredible sense of patriotism, valor, courage and sheer determination to cross the aisle and work for what he believed was best for his country. A man who bore the scars of battle and define what a true American public servant should be. I’m a democrat, and had the honor to share a few words with Senator McCain on a Southwest flight. We were sitting in the same row. They don’t make them like this anymore. A real patriot, hero, and great man.
Doesn't matter which side you're on: this man is an America HERO. Indisputable strength, grace, class, and decency. Thank you, sir, for all that you have done for this country.

One may disagree with some of the policies he stood for, but there is no denying his humbleness in defeat when he asked all those who supported him to come together and at least try to support Obama's administration. This call for bipartisanship and cooperation towards the greater good is something sorely missed and needed in today's political environment, not just in the U.S. but abroad as well.
Unfortunately nowadays the act of compromise is regarded as weakness. Compromise is how things get done when people don't agree. We need to support compromise.
I disagreed with McCain's positions but he has never been anything other than a principled and decent politician.

McCain knew from the start of the race that it would take a miracle to win, and he consciously decided to run the race in a dignified and honorable way. It got ugly at times, and that's fine, but he refused to sink to the depths to which so many in his party tried to drag him. His arguments with Obama were over policy, not character. Though I did not agree with his positions, I know that McCain genuinely believed that he was working to improve the US.

This was the beginning of that fall. A black man winning the presidency triggered the racists to start to come out and further became empowered and enabled b/c of Trump. McCain had the class to calm them down, but the boos say everything. This was the actual beginning of Trumpist ideology.
@@sharpasnails7601 If it was about him being black then Obama wouldn't have won the second term. He is a wonderful orator but is terrible at getting things done in administration level. That's how the House and Senate turned red in 2014 and an out of establishment business mogul like Trump became populist among ordinary Americans and won the presidency in 2016.
Even in 2020 election, he won above 70 million votes and statistically he made gain among Hispanics by 15% and 6% among African Americans despite the constant effort of mainstream medias, hollywood and elite to tame him as a "racist".
How he stopped his voters from booing and at the same time gave a very amazing reason to why he(Obama) deserved to win. And to remind people what America is. A land of opportunity and land of the free.
I remember dropping everything and rushing to watch this live on TV on election night of 2008. I remember being moved by this concession speech as I watched it, which I though showed the good character and personality of John McCain. This is one of my best memories from election night 2008, and I'm watching it now for the first time in twelve years. I see I remembered this all very accurately.
This concessions speech shows us what our country used to be, especially when individuals like John McCain were around. I saw John McCain fall ill, publish his last memoir which he wrote knowing his time was limited, and ultimately pass away. In his last TV interview McCain was optimistic, saying that he was an "an 81 year old man who was blessed to have had such a great and fortunate life." It doesn't get any more humble and admirable than that, especially considering the hell he went through for 7 years as a POW in the infamous "Hanoi Hilton." His conduct as a POW was astonishingly courageous and admirable, especially when he rejected an offer to be released in a POW exchange, standing by the old military saying, "first one in, first one out." McCain was a true gentleman all throughout his fascinating and historically significant life, and his passing was a loss to our country regardless of your political opinions. I was saddened and insulted as an American that Trump did not visit John McCain's casket, though I'm sad to say, I wasn't surprised. But what I found most impressive and reflective of McCain's personality was the fact that he asked his former political opponent in the 2000 Presidential election primary, President George W. Bush, and his former opponent in the 2008 Presidential election, President Barack Obama, to read his eulogy. May you rest in peace, John Sidney McCain III.

A man of character, presence, leadership, incredible sense of patriotism, valor, courage and sheer determination to cross the aisle and work for what he believed was best for his country. A man who bore the scars of battle and define what a true American public servant should be. May God bless his family and friends all the respect of the world to a man who's legacy will live on forever.

Of all republicans present and past, McCain may be my absolute favorite. He never believed in hatred. He knew what respect was and he held it very high. I praise him very much for his service as a veteran, POW, and Presidential Candidate. Thank you for everything you've done John!
A speech that I believe that every American and none American that had heard this speech had been pricked in their hearts by his words a man who fought and stood for all that he believed in for God for his country and for his family never wavering once in what he believed in. Thank you good sir to you and the rest of the brave men and women who have sacrificed so much for our freedom.
