1. US President George W. Bush walks to podium
2. SOUNDBITE: (English) George W. Bush, US President:
"Good morning. Last night I had a warm conversation with president-elect Barack Obama. I congratulated him and Senator Biden on their impressive victory. I told the president-elect he could count on complete cooperation from my administration as he makes the transition to the White House. I also spoke to Senator John McCain. I congratulated him on a determined campaign that he and Governor Palin ran. The American people will always be grateful for the lifetime of service John McCain has devoted to this nation, and I know he will continue to make tremendous contributions to our country. No matter how they cast their ballots, all Americans can be proud of the history that was made yesterday. Across the country citizens voted in large numbers. They showed a watching world the vitality of American democracy and the stride we have made toward a more perfect union. They chose a president whose journey represents a triumph of the American story. A testament to hard work, optimism and faith in the enduring promise of our nation. Many of our citizens thought they would never live to see that day. This moment is especially uplifting for a generation of Americans who witnessed the struggles of civil rights with their own eyes; four decades later, see a dream fulfilled. A long campaign is ended and we move forward as a nation. Embarking on a period of change in Washington, yet there are some things that will not change. The United States government will remain vigilant in meeting its most important responsibility: protecting the American people. And the world can be certain this commitment will remain steadfast under our next commander in chief. There is important work to do in the months ahead and I will continue to conduct the people's business as long as this office remains in my trust. During this time of transition I will keep the president-elect fully informed on important decisions. When the time comes on January 20 Laura and I will return home to Texas with treasured memories of our time here, with profound gratitude for the honour of serving this amazing country. It will be a stirring sight to watch President Obama, his wife, Michelle, and their beautiful girls step through the doors of the White House. I know millions of Americans will be overcome with pride at this inspiring moment that so many have waited so long. I know Senator Obama's beloved mother and grandparents would have been thrilled to watch the child they raised ascend the steps of the Capitol and take his oath to uphold the constitution of the greatest nation on the face of the earth. Last night I extended an invitation to the president-elect and Mrs Obama to come to the White House and Laura and I are looking forward to welcoming them as soon as possible. Thank you very much."
3. Bush walks away
STORYLINE:
US President George W. Bush fully embraced the election of Democrat Barack Obama as his successor on Wednesday, paying stirring tribute to the election of the first U.S. black president-elect and hailing the campaign of change that led Obama to victory.
Bush promised Obama his "complete cooperation" during the Democrat's 76-day transition to the White House.
The president said he would keep Obama informed on all his decisions between now and January 20, and said he looked forward to the day - soon, he hopes - that Obama and his family would take him up on his offer of pre-inauguration White House visit.

“Mexico will pay for the wall.”
“Take this unproven drug.”
“I got a letter from Kim a few days ago...” - then we find out Kim is hospitalized and possibly brain dead.
Trump will not go down as a great president. In 30-40 years history will not look back on him fondly.
This is how a leader is supposed to act when his party loses an election.
Exactly.
Bush and Obama are part of the same monoparty. The policies were virtually the same, especially geopolitical ones. Trump is an outsider, hence why he is attacked.
Well yeah but the truth is John Mccain was barely a republican and he ran a shitty lazy campaign against Obama and Bush and McCain didn't like each other
Yeah because it's not like he didnt accept losing Florida in 2000... oh wait!
He didn't like john McCain and McCain was barely a Republican. I doubt bush was that broken up about it. McCain ran a lazy shitty campaign against obama
This is what a peaceful transition of power looks like and should continue to look like in our great nation.
Agreed. The next transfer of power (whenever that maybe) should look exactly like it did in 2008 and 2016.
He sounds like a poet compared to Obama. Obama speaks so naturally he doesn’t even need notes. This guy reads straight from his speech.

Adam Brynes....yes good ole days....
Man, I had so many gripes with Bush's policies, but nobody can deny he was a class act in the way he carried himself. This is a great speech showing phenomenal leadership. As much as I didn't like this man's presidency, I was always confident he cared about America and Americans and that, even if we disagreed, he had a lot of love in his heart. I miss this era of politics. I miss the people we were then.
I long for those days brother
I agree. For all his faults and bad decisions, this was one of the times he stood up and showed how a president should act. In addition, kudos to both Senator John McCain and then Governor (now senator) Mitt Romney for how they handled defeat in an honorable fashion. It is difficult to imagine the nation going back to the way things ought to be.
Totally agree, what a leader
I was completely against most of Bush's policy and may never forgive his administration for Iraq. But even though partisanship was quite virulent in this period, it was nothing like the destructive forces US democracy faces today. How low things have sunk that this is the case.
Unfortunately you can't change others. But you can act like this yourself. I've been doing politics for over ten years now and the least I can tell you is that there is still a _significant_ number of people, both inside the parliaments of the world and outside on the streets, who have great respect for this. And they will pay it back in their own ways. Not everyone, of course, especially not today. But being a class act will never not resonate with people. And if it inspires some of them to follow your example, you've already made the world a better place and established your own tiny, little legacy. More to come, or maybe not, doesn't matter. At that point it was already worth it.

That is how it should be done. Graciously, respectfully.
It says a lot about Trump that people are pointing to George Bush as an example of how a president should act.
I remember how I felt when he was re-elected and how it wasn't right after all that had gone on. Easier times.
It says a lot about people indeed. You know that in 2000 Al Gore was called president elect by the media (as Biden is today) and that after multiple recounts, the results were flipped and Bush won (as Trump may do now).
Bush didn't accept the result that appeared incorrect. His legal team called for recounts, as Trump's team is doing right now. When there have been 100+ affidavits submitted claiming they witnessed both intentional fraud and negligence, videos of poll watchers being denied entry(illegal) and the Supreme Court of a State overruling the legislature (against the constitution) then there is obvious cause for investigation. If people are so certain nothing went wrong with the mail-in ballots then what do people have to lose?
People have very poor memory it seems.
People that oppose the supervised counting of all legal votes and the discarding of illegal votes...it really says something about how much they actually support democracy.
Gee GWB was a god awful president, he really messed up America and weaseled us into multiple pointless wars. Oh well he seems cool though I’d drink a beer with him.

The image that has been shared of the Washington Post was doctored - they never ran a story of President Elect Gore. I cant find any that actually did.
I believe Bush was always ahead in Florida but that one state would determine the presidency. The margin of victory was minimal - less than 2k out of 6million voters.
The recount for small margins of victory is widely mandated to protect the integrity.
Big difference between Gore/Bush and Trump.
@@iangarratt5715 Not really. Not all states haven't been called. The same situation as you proposed for 2000. So, very similar besides the fact that now there are a lot of irregularities that point to intentional or unintentional counting of illegal votes.
