Looking back to 2008, I remember wanting Obama to win so bad. And he did. But now looking back, after everything I know about John McCain now, it's comforting to know if he had won he would have been a good president. One I would have disagreements with, but not one I would worry doesn't have the best interests in our country and democracy in his heart.

Wasn't a fan of McCain until he defended Obama and ultimately, his concession speech. He won my respect and never lost it. When McCain lied to Letterman about why he had canceled his appearance when he could so easily be found out about it, I felt sorry for McCain that he was out of his depth and presumably rather exhausted. But he had a lot of good points and refusing to milk existing racism (etc.) against Obama for all it was worth was VERY presidential.

I'm a progressive and my coworker is a republican. Although we don't agree a lot politically we have mutual respect for each others ideals and enjoy our time together. Now, all these years later, it's astonishing to think such a thing could actually exist given the past five years, yet there it is in plain view for all to see. Deepest respect to them both. I think John McCain was a great man, a true hero! I love Barack and John’s friendship. I’m a democrat, who’s a Grandma watching them joking with each other is what I’m used to in politics. I know a lot of of great Republicans who were also great men like Jeff Flake, Paul Ryan, Adam Kinzinger, Liz Cheney and others who were run out of the party just because they had a different opinion than Trump. I'm a naturalized American - I made a choice to be American. I'm a Democrat. I always had great respect for John McCain, for his honor, courage and dignity. He would have made a great president. It's a tough job, no one get's it 100% right, but when you see where these two were coming from, it was something that America could be proud of. We still have respectable, responsible statesmen in the house and senate - they are our elected representatives. It's way past time that both side got some spine and decorum and stamped out the vile, small minded minority that has coalesced around trump and return to a time where both sides get credit for the good they do, both sides call out injustice and bigotry and both sides have some common decency and respect for the other side who are all collectively trying to do their best at a COMMON job they have. Wasn't a fan of McCain until he defended Obama and ultimately, his concession speech. He won my respect and never lost it. When McCain lied to Letterman about why he had canceled his appearance when he could so easily be found out about it, I felt sorry for McCain that he was out of his depth and presumably rather exhausted. But he had a lot of good points and refusing to milk existing racism (etc.) against Obama for all it was worth was VERY presidential.

Obama was subpar and yet everyone loves him because he’s black and “cool”.
It brings a lump to your throat watching these two now. Despite being opponents, those two guys had one hell of a lot of respect for each other, and a camaraderie and rapport that some Presidents don't even have with people in their own party. I guess it could be because they both had the same values, morals and love and want to make their country the best it could be, and that's what tied them together - they were more the same than different. Now, all these years later, it's astonishing to think such a thing could actually exist given the past five years, yet there it is in plain view for all to see. Deepest respect to them both. How so very proud America must have been to have people like that looking out for them and lets be honest, you couldn't go wrong having either of them leading the country - you would be in good hands whoever won that election . Back then as a outsider it could even make you want to be American just to be a part of that. Now, not so much. Hopefully that will change again
McCain and Obama respected each other so much it’s admirable. It all seems like a different timeline now
At this point McCains loss was virtually 100% guaranteed and he still went up there with a smile

I MISS the days when political rivals could set aside their partisanship to entertain a crowd, and could rib each other without it devolving into nastiness. Hard to believe that 4 excruciating years have soiled the political landscape so deeply.
And I'm afraid it might be permanent soiling. Even if Trump gets kicked out of office this January, the damage is already done. We'll still be heavily divided.

I watched Barack Obama and John McCain in this video, and it made me cry. The sheer honesty of their respect for each other was so profound and endearing. I think John McCain was a great man, a true hero! I love Barack and John’s friendship. I’m a democrat, who’s a Grandma watching them joking with each other is what I’m used to in politics. I know a lot of of great Republicans who were also great men like Jeff Flake, Paul Ryan, Adam Kinzinger, Liz Cheney and others who were run out of the party just because they had a different opinion than Trump. We had good people on both sides, now those people are gone. Barack and John are what we need in our politics today. President Joe Biden is a good man and a great President! I just want our country to come together and be united again!! I love Barack and John, seeing them gives me hope for our future. God bless America and God bless John McCain a true legend!

I'm a naturalized American - I made a choice to be American. I'm a Democrat. I always had great respect for John McCain, for his honor, courage and dignity. He would have made a great president. It's a tough job, no one get's it 100% right, but when you see where these two were coming from, it was something that America could be proud of. We still have respectable, responsible statesmen in the house and senate - they are our elected representatives. It's way past time that both side got some spine and decorum and stamped out the vile, small minded minority that has coalesced around trump and return to a time where both sides get credit for the good they do, both sides call out injustice and bigotry and both sides have some common decency and respect for the other side who are all collectively trying to do their best at a COMMON job they have. Please, please, please - Make America Great Again.
