  • Today on Dirt Lifestyle we are building some overland gear storage! Organizing your overlanding gear can be a huge pain. This video is intended to give you some ideas and inspiration on how to building something like this yourself. I started out like everyone else, by tossing all my camping gear in the back and hitting the trails but this method drove me nuts! Let's explore some ideas on how to clean up this mess! Enjoy the video! You can build this!

    Killed it Nate. Goes to show you don’t need a major production team to put out a TV worthy show. Editing skills are second to none. Best channel on UA-cam.

    Watch the hot air venting on the fridge/freezer. Trapping the hot air exhaust around it can kill the efficiency.

    • @ernsts
      @ernsts 4 роки тому +2

      Exactly my thoughts when I saw the narrow space the fridge slides in. Wonder if OP has some details about performance in praktice? If it has to work hard you’ll notice a faster batttery drain for example (and hear the compressor running constantly).

    • @silverstake88
      @silverstake88 3 роки тому +1

      Tru-dat. I have a 12-volt compressor setup similar to this one. And, yes... it will build up heat quickly if there is no ventilation.

  • @mygamertag2010X
    @mygamertag2010X 4 роки тому +2

    Super need to add ventilation for your fridge. You'll burn it out in that tight of a cavity. I'd recommend drilling a bunch of holes around where it vents in your wood panels.

    Some of us really appreciate the inclusion of the speaker box!
    Im considering making some sort of modular system with being a dual sub box that that fits behind my 2 door JK backs seat, but then can be removed and storage system installed to same mounting points with a smaller sub and no back seat when i dont have the kids to have max storage to keep tunes going on long trips.

    I believe actual box volume is less than 0.34 cubic feet incorporating the material thickness at 0.75. You might be missing some low end. Also, next time you build a drawer system (and sub box) consider using Baltic Birch. Lighter, superior with water/moisture, attractive resonant frequencies, not to mention way healthier to work with (no urea-formaldehyde release when cutting). Baltic comes in 5x5’ sheets, fyi. Love the channel! Keep up the awesome work!

      I'd love to do my whole build with that but it's hideously expensive here.

    • @leemontgomery72

      Yes, internal volume is .34, too small for the sub.

    • @duceanahalf

    I waited like a week or two before watching this video because I didn’t think I’d be interested in seeing something like this. It’s not something I’ll ever do myself, as I’m not into overland I g nor would I build something like this. But let me tell you, the craftsmanship and just overall confidence you’ve got in building something like this is insane! Being able to just freestyle and come up with the brilliance you always end up creating is just wild to see. Your level of fabrication is out of this world.

    On non-load bearing sections of the storage area, you can cut holes out of the MDF to save weight. Look at airplane and ship building designs for inspiration. In your Roverlander I'm betting there are a few pounds that could be saved. Very neat design, I love watching these videos.

    Quick questions:
    1. Venting\cooling for the fridge?
    2. Latches for the slide and drawer?
    3. Why not do a proper 12v set-up in the wing voids?

    • @MultiDodgedude
      @MultiDodgedude 4 роки тому +1

      My guess would be this was a quick build to accommodate the trip he is currently on with the roverlander. I would assume that he has plans to address the noted issues in future videos. As for the fridge venting my fridge only requires 1/2 inch of air space around it to be fine, and it was ment to be in the back of a truck (63q element arb fridge)

  • @Pike3916
    @Pike3916 4 роки тому

    I would add a small lip to the top storage area to help keep any heavier items out of the window. It's easy to say that you don't plan on putting anything heavy up there, but when you run out of other options...

    Love it! As a former speaker builder, I'd *highly* recommend viewers consider "Baltic Birch" instead of MDF. Pros:: 1) it is lot lighter, 2) it isn't as toxic for your lungs, 3) it is dimensionally stable and there aren't voids in it so you can round over corners and such, 4) should be far better if subjected to moisture but I'd treat either just in case. Cons:: 1) its expensive vs MDF.
    And if anyone wants to build their own sub for their truck/car/jeep. I recommend getting up the learning curve with Unibox for Excel (or equiv). If you are building a sealed sub the 'Q' of the sub is the important target, which is most commonly 0.56 or 0.7 depending on what your acoustic goals are. I have no idea which is better in a car, my guess would be 0.56. And all the models for volume are 'inside volumes' so not including the thickness of the walls which is actually significant in the case of small boxes like these but also subtract the volume of the sub driver itself.

  • @JustAnotherGuyInTheComments

    Haven’t watched the video all the way through yet but I thought I saw you use MDF. You probably know this but if MDF gets wet, it’s game over for the shelves, so don’t hit too many puddles! Hope this helps someone out there.

    Thanks for all the videos, some great ideas on your channel. I must say in terms of the material used in this video (MDF) it's too heavy for use in a Disco (and most wagons)m the weight of the MDF + fridge slide reduces the vehicles load capacity when GVM is taken into consideration. In any case I do appreciate your video. Not sure if you live in a hot part of the US but the fridge will chew through power without proper venting through the "cabinet". Cheers from Oz

    MDF is so damn heavy though. Carpet easily hides the imperfections on the surface of cheap plywood, plus you get a ton of weight savings depending on the type. Either way, absolutely killer setup! Love the channel. Keep pumping out the great content!
