Thanks for checking out this beginner harmonica lesson, Single Notes for Beginners. This lesson is for people who have little or no experience with a harmonica. Maybe you’re thinking about buying one (DO IT!!!!) Or maybe you’re thinking, “Ok, I have a harmonica….now what?”
Well, there is certainly some good fun to be had without having to learn a technique for playing single notes. For some ideas about this, check out my other lesson, Harmonica Chords for Beginners:
• Harmonica Chords for B...
By the way, I learned everything I know about playing single notes on harmonica from JP Allen. If you’re brand new to the harmonica and are serious about wanting to learn, I recommend you check out his awesome course, Breakthrough Blues:

I’m playing a C harmonica for this lesson. Any 10-hole diatonic harmonica in the key of C will work for you to follow along with this lesson.
For Low Rider, I’m playing a C harmonica, in 2nd position, in the key of G. Here are the harmonica tabs in C for Low Rider:

Finally, a harmonica video where you don't just show off in the beginning! 🤣
LOL. Nice.
I forwarded the video... But on seeing your comment, i went back to view the beginning 😂🤣
Yeah agreed
I’ve found like 19 different ones and they flex lol
Thank goodness for that, full stop! I really appreciate this and his other videos. Nicely done.
I have been taking Luke's course for a couple of months. He is an excellent teacher and his lessons are a lot of fun. I took up the harmonica just a few months ago at age 90, so almost anyone can enjoy this wonderful instrument.
That is awesome, George! You're an inspiration to all of us. Thank you so much for the kind words!
I appreciate you are still learning new things at age 90, inspirational!
I bought a harmonica 20 years ago and then didn't learn it. Since Covid 19 the harmonica is my new thing. I practice daily. I appreciate your teaching style. I'm have a lot of fun. Thank you!
Right on guys. I’m so glad you’ve found the harmonica during this time, and hope you stick with it when things open back up…
So I’m not the only one who wants to play Harp during isolation...
I think you should buy another harmonica cause it may be oxidated, just saying..
Me too but only 10 years ago :)
What’s your progress so far?
I really like the way Luke addresses some of the issues beginners have such as putting the harp at a 90 degree position and lowering it until the note is hit. These tips can be really helpful. Low Rider is a good choice for learning notes at the end. It’s easy to follow and a recognizable song for most anyone.
Hey Bill - thanks for the kind words. Happy harpin’ my brother!
Holy crap that tilt up + lower lip thing is MAGICAL. I was trying the straight on lip purse for days and could barely play any single notes, and always with great difficulty. But with your technique I was playing remarkably easy and doing Low Rider in 30 minutes! Thank you!!
Wow, Ivy! That's great news. So glad it helped. Yeah, the tilt was how I got my first single note too!
I watched a bunch of tutorials and this is the one that clicked with me. After 10 minutes of practice i can finally do single notes. It's the semi pucker explanation that helped. Basically I press the harmonica against the top lips and mouth and only adjust the lower lips. Thank you so much.
YES Nick. You got it! Rock on! 😎
Hello Luke!
I m a Swiss guy who just found your channel. And you have no idea how grateful I am for your videos. In only 2 days (this week-end), I learned how to play « what a wonderful world » for my grand dad funeral this monday…
He was a big fan of harmonica and Louis Armstrong… so, thanx a lot for all the good tips and stuff you share. It was a very sweet and Nice moment with my brother at guitare. The last good bye to a good old man!
I thought Maybe u’ll be happy to know that little story!
Wish you the best!
Wow that is amazing and so beautiful, and I'm so honored to have been a part of your journey to honor your grandfather in that way. God bless you! KEEP PLAYING!! 😎
Just bought myself a Lee Oskar Major Diatonic in C.. absolutely love his videos because they're in depth and he actually SHOWS you what he's doing instead of just telling you. Will most likely be purchasing his Beginner to Boss lessons very soon!
Thank you for your kind words. I really appreciate it!
Your lesson is absolutely amazing! I started Harmonica precisely 30 minutes ago and you already taught me a skill and a reward of a little iconic tune! YOU ROCK!
Right on Wade! Glad it helped. Wow, Isolating notes after 30 mins!?! Good for you my man! Just make sure you're using that deep relaxed mouth position.
Rock on,
Luke
It took me years to pickup a harmonica and try isolating notes. By the end of this video I was doing it. THANK YOU x 1000
Woo hoo! Yeah, Daniel! Do it, do it, man!
Thank you so much I was having a hard time, learning anything from all these people doing jazz stuff that it frustrated me. Lowrider is more my kinda music and speed which made it fun to learn and because of how you explained it i got it my first try, I messed up with when to blow in and out a couple of times, but i finally got it! Thanks for the video, and step by step instructions, I can play the harmonica now! Well at least my first song, all thanks to you.
Much Love,
Nicole
I have tried and failed numerous times to start learning harmonica, always giving up because I couldn't isolate single notes. WHY DOES NO ONE ELSE EVER SAY TO TILT THE THING UPWARD?!?!? Finally I have some confidence that I can learn this instrument, thank you so much!
Hahaha! Right on, Craig! Yes, you’ve got this!
OMG!!!! I've looked at other so called instruction vids on how to produce one note and got no where after weeks of trying. After 5 MINUTES watching your vid I can play single notes!!!! THANKS SO MUCH BRO! I'M SOOO HAPPY!!
Woo Hoo! Right on, Geo. So glad I could help!
Great stuff Luke. I've learned so much from your videos. They are very engaging and you keep it simple as well as making it fun to learn with you. Good work and Thank you for your time & effort in putting these things together & helping all.
You’re welcome, Michael. Glad you like it.
I’ve watch a few videos on how to play this tin sandwich, and I can finally hit clear single notes. You da man.
I agree! He is the best teacher I'v found so far!
Thank you
Right on Isaiah. Congrats on getting it man!
Yes ... Chicken Sandwich ... !
Yeah mynega
Wow! I have watched a dozen or two on single notes. All made sense but this had me playing clean single notes in minutes! Great stuff!
AMAZING! Rock on! 😎
I have been playing the harmonica casually for many years (i.e. with no instruction - my apologies to my family) and I’ve seen a lot of “how to” videos. This short tutorial just taught me more in a few minutes than hours of other online videos did combined. Your video is a revelation in it’s ability to really TEACH! You’d think the goal of any instructional video would be to present the material in a clear, concise and friendly manner. Most are the opposite. Teaching is an art and your video is a perfect example for others to follow. Don’t EVER stop! Your help has improved my harmonica tremendously, I (and definitely my family) thank you for it! I’ll watch whatever you produce, Luke!
Thank you so much for your kind words and encouragement. This makes my day! So glad the vids are helping you (and the fam! 🤣) Rock on. 🤘🏼
Thank you so much for the 2 draw tips!! I've just managed to hit my first decent sounding 2 draw thanks to dropping the lower part of my tongue a lot. So excited!! Thanks so much!
Niiiice, Anneli. That’s a great accomplishment! Keep it up!
This is by far the best explanation I've seen and I watched like 20 videos about this!! Thanks dude you rock!
Hey Joe - thanks so much for your kind words. Made my day!
I found my grand fathers old Hohner Chrometta I from the 40s or 50’s and had no idea how to play. Found your video and decides to give it ago. I just managed to get the clean number 4 tone and you should see the smile on my face! 😀 You made me want to learn playing and I will do it with your channel. I’m sure both my father and grand father up in heaven are smiling right now. Thank you! And God bless
God bless you too. Progress over perfection! Love it. Roc on. 🤘🏼
Luke, l'm so pleased that l found you. This lesson is so invaluable, now I knew I was doing it all wrong when single out a note ... you are undeniably a great teacher! Thank you very much!
Oh, right on Eric! Thanks for the kind words, and I'm glad you're progressing. Happy to help!
Dude, I've been watching so many videos trying to isolate notes & this is the first one that actually helped. Definitely subscribing
Right on Marcus! Thanks for subscribing. See you again soon. ;-)
This great! I just found an old harmonica of my dad's. I appreciate a beginner lesson with a familiar tune!♥️
Right on Amy. Never stop playing!
Thank you so much for this video, you are a great teacher. I don’t know how many times I’ve picked up a harmonica and tried to make it sound like something. After watching this today, I finally did! Followed your instructions and I can finally play single notes.
Woo hoo! That’s great news. I hope you never stop!
Watched at least 8 different videos and couldn’t get it, watched this one time and now finally able to!! Thanks a lot man
Sweet. Congrats. You’re welcome.
I have had a Harmonica for 30 years and never learned. Now I have a 2 year old son who loves to blow on it to make his own tunes. Guess I better learn so I can teach him when he is ready. Cannot wait to teach him Low Rider! We are gonna turn heads for sure 😎😁
Love this. You'll turn heads indeed! I've got an 18 month old son myself. He JUST got the hang of blowing and drawing on harmonica, lol.
best harmonic a single note lecture for beginner i had ever seen , now i can play single
notes clearly , thanks for you
That’s what I like to hear, Zanyar. Rock on!!!
I got a harp and sat here all day trying to get the hang of the "pucker" demonstrated in other videos.
3 minutes into this video everything they had failed to explain clicked for me. Thank you!
Ha! Right on Tobor. You made my day. Rock on. 🤘🏼
Great. I have first learned the tongue blocking and then the whistleing, I now feel more confortable and relaxed playing with this technique
Very good GB.
Great teacher man! I am an experienced multi-instrumentist, and just right know I've just started with harmonica. I've have seen milions of youtube lessons of many different instruments, and I have to say you are one of the best! Keep teaching! Thanks you so much!
Wow! Thank you so much!! Yes, much more to come…
Being isolated at home during the pandemic, I decided to try a new hobby and learn the harmonica. I checked out a lot of instructional videos on UA-cam and this guy is the best!!! Keep up the great work Luke and hope to see more of your videos in 2020! Stay safe.
Right on Todd- Thank you! Will do, and you stay safe too! And, yes, definitely more videos coming later on this year.!
Amazing, |'ve had my harmonica for a few days only and because of these amazing tutorials I can already play singles and bend notes! Thank you :) will definitely be checking out your courses!
This is an amazing tutorial. From never picking up a harmonica before, you just taught me how to play this song flawlessly in about 30 min
Seriously? Wow, you're the man Charles! Rock on!!
I finally learned it, after watching nearly every video on YT. Thank you to you and others. BTW, you look like if Val Kilmer had a little brother who became a musician instead of an actor.
Haha! Good one.
After searching so many useless stuff on UA-cam found your video i feel so glad to find your channel coz this video contains everything on a single short video and It's quite understandable and i learnt this thanking you sooooo much 😇❤️💫
Haha! Glad they helped. Thanks for the emoji. :-)
This is awesome advice! Thank you so much for putting it together so clearly. The detail is astounding.
Right on Gina. Thanks for the note
Luke you're such a cool teacher, your videos are always top notch. Plus it's so dang entertaining how you crack up from time to time!
Thanks Jane! I do crack up sometimes, lol. I’m glad you’re liking the vids!
Thank you very much. This is a wonderful lesson
Glad you liked it! You're welcome.
This video is great!!! I recently won a harmonica and figured I need to learn how to play it. Used your video to grasp a little harmonica theory before trying to play for the very first time on a couple of mountain tops (which is the reason why I won the harmonica in the first place). Gave this video credit in my video description 😉
Wonderful Eileen! Congrats, thank you, and rock on my friend.
That was a great lesson, thanks. Definately helped with the single notes and felt more comfortable. Your a good teacher.
Thanks JC! Rock on!
Superb way of teaching, Luke! It is just my second day learning to play the harp by practicing using your Low Rider video tutorial. Thank you very much mate.
Right on Fritz! I’m glad you found it to be helpful. Thanks for your kind words.
this dudes such a cool teacher, "dying duck" its exactly my style at the momento
Ha! Thanks Mateo. No worries, it'll all come together in time my friend!
Dude you're a fantastic teacher, and great hat!
Thanks Mark!
Luke, im new and learning through you videos. i cant say enough how much I appreciate your teaching methods, your well done videos, how slow you go for beginners. For me, your the best instructor on youtube. Your absolutely excellent and really have contributed so much towards raising up new musicians! Thank you!
Right on, Al! Thanks for the kind words. I really appreciate it. You're very welcome.
Rock on,
Luke
God bless you. I have looked for videos for ages. Finally got it. This is way better than any other video for single notes. THANK YOU
You're very welcome! Congrats! And blessings right back atcha. Rock on!
Your a great teacher, I have adhd and this was the first video I have got the concept of, thank you!
Right on. You’re welcome!
This is a much more detailed and more helpful lesson on how to play single notes than any other video I’ve seen. I was struggling with not knowing how I could tell if I was successfully playing single notes. I would’ve never thought to block the holes around them with my finger lol
Probably the best tutorial I've ever seen for begginers
@@danielnewman5230 Thank you so much, Daniel!
Ha! Right on. Yeah, that’s a helpful trick.
I have been playing with my fingers blocking the holes for a really long time. Now I can puck as well. Thank You.
CONGRATS!
Thanks Luke for breaking this down and making it fun. Playing a little riff after always makes me feel like progress.
James - that’s it man. Play, play, and keep on playing!
Harmonica com your a great teacher brotha please upload more frequently love it
Thank you so much. This is the only explanation I've found that made sense and I'm now playing single notes.
Thanks Kristoff, and congrats!
Teaching me is like teaching a rock to high jump, but your technique is encouraging, much appreciated.
Terrence - LOL! That’s how I felt at the beginning too!
I had a pet rock one time and it ran away
My grandmother felt bad for me so she got me another one for my birthday 3 months later that one died
Thanks to this video I realized that my harmonica was not broken I thought I had bought a defective harmonica and was just about to return it for another but thanx to the video I learned the reason why I couldn't make any sound was that I was trying to play it from the wrong side all it would do is make a very faint squeak and slightly vibrate but only one end other end wouldn't do anything thanks now I can make sounds and If I turn the volume up loud enough I can play along perfectly with every song I've tried to play 🤡🤟
Next I'm gonna get a kazoo and then I'd like to master the bag pipes 🆒️
Thank you so much. Haven't been able to do the pukker method to do single notes until your video. Much appreciated!
Right on Boris! Glad to help.
So at the beginning of this video I had absolutely no clue if I was doing any of it right... But by the end I could hear when I was able to isolate a single note! Awesome tips that really did work and explain things in a way that made sense. Thank you!
Nice, Monique! Thanks for your note, and have fun rockin!
Buddy... you are the man!
I've just started learning the harmonica 2 weeks ago and the whole time I just could NOT get single notes. I watched lots of videos but couldn't do it.
After watching your video now I can do it. Consistently.
The bit that did it for me was rotating upwards 30 degrees. I just hadn't realised that.
Thanks you so much.

Right on! Yeah, tilting the harp really helped me isolate notes when I was learning how to play single notes.
This was AMAZING! Thank you, but for some reason when I draw I get a high pinched ringing, any Idea what that was?
Yes, most likely, the high ringing is because the back of your tongue is up near your hard palette like when you say “K.” Try dropping your jaw and making an “awww” vowel shape.
I bought a harp a while ago, meant to learn, even have a mate who teaches, but didn't get around to it. Since lockdown I started watching another UA-cam tutorial. It was OK, learnt a couple of scales, but not much else. Nothing to get excited about. This video was in the suggestions to the side of it. This was a game changer for me. Lots of great tips and to learn a song (that I know) was mind-blowing. I'm not quite there with 'Low Rider', but I'll practice until I am. Such an informative video. Thank you so much!
You’re welcome G!
I like the way Luke explains everything, his tips are really helpful. Thanks Luke!!!
Right on Glenn. I appreciate it!
I wish i could be able to like this video 20 million times!!! Thanks a lot :D
Ha! Thanks so much, Adem! You’re very welcome. Rock on.
👍👍😇
Great ! Been trying to play for yrs.
Your are very clear, exact, instructor. Thanks.
Awesome, Mel. Thanks for your kind words!
I have watched a number of videos and this has been by far the most helpful as a beginner!
Right on, Frank. Glad it was helpful! Rock on.
I want you to know this video helped me immensely. I've been playing for a bit now, but not enough to not watch a video cause it's marked "beginner", lol. Your explanation about tilting the harmonica and pulling down your bottom lip immediately improved my playing! I haven't gotten this info from any video lesson I've seen, or maybe I missed it! Lol, either way thank you so much.
Hey Austin - so glad to hear it. Keep on rockin’ my friend!
Such a helpful video, great detailed explanations and a patient friendly vibe. I love learning from all Luke's vids 🤙
thanks for your kind words. Glad the vids are helping!
Aloha,
Luke
Best teaching, straight forward easy to pick up and quick to learn. I found lessons by others difficult and over complicated. Much appreciated Luke, cheers
Right on! Glad they were helpful!
Luke, you explain things in a way that makes sense the 1st time. You're a great player and teacher. Keep being awesome!
Thanks a bunch Eric. 🙏🏼 Rock on! 😎
I’ve had layoff practice for a while. Getting back into it is easy following your instructions. Good tutorials.
Thanks Mike! Rock on! 😎
Huge breakthrough after a month of sloppy playing after this video today! All the songs I know are so much cleaner and it's a huge confidence booster!!! Now I'm just struggling with finding that sweet spot between too tight and not blowing anything and too loose! Love it!
So cool Grant! Thanks for the note.
Rock on,
Luke
This is awesome! Ordering my E Stop harmonica on Thursday I can't wait! I've always wanted to play harmonica and now I can learn because of these videos Thank you so much 👍
Aw, Donald, that's great to hear man! Easttop makes some solid harps. Rock on, sir!
-Luke
Love the way you actually are demonstrating for people to learn. Nice job!!
I appreciate that! Glad you liked it. Rock on, John!
Aloha,
Luke
Got myself a harmonica and was looking for a teacher online and here what I got. You are an amazing teacher. Hope I will be able to play some decent notes in few months. Thank you for teaching.
Aww thanks for the kind words Deepak. You got this. You'll be rocking before you know it!
I am just trying it again and I like your video. Thanks. Simple no showing off like the others
Glad it was helpful! Rock on! 😎
One of the things I chose from my Grandfathers house after he passed was his Hohner chromonica 280 C harmonica. I have great memories of him playing when I was a kid & I always loved listening to him. I’ve had his harmonica for a few years now and I have always wanted to learn how to play it. However I could never seem to find tutorials that were for the absolute beginner that I was. At any rate, even though this lesson is not for the kind of harmonica I have I found this video lesson to be the best that I have come across, it has been very helpful, Thank you
Hey Right on Lisa - thanks so much for the note! Yes, I would recommend considering purchasing a 10-hole diatonic harmonica as it's a much easier instrument to learn and it could still be a great way of honoring your Grandfather. If you decide to buy one, here's my guide on choosing which one: www.harmonica.com/which-harmonica-to-buy/
Has played harmonica for many years. With my new golden melody, it did not go so well until I saw your video. Now things are going better than ever before, already after a few minutes. Very thankful!
Nice! That’s what I like to hear, Kent! Golden melody is a great harp. I love them!
Excellent presentation. I really needed to start from the very beginning and you are really helping me. Thank you.
Awesome, Charles. You're very welcome!
You are a very good, honest teacher. Your explanation is exceptionally clear word by word. I need only five minutes to master your lesson on isolated notes. Thank you so much !!
Wow, thank you! Congrats on getting single notes so fast!
Wow that trick regarding rotation of the harmonica was so freaking helpful. Nobody else I have listened to and watched made it click like you did. Thanks.
Sweet. Yeah that's how I first got it too. Glad it helped!
Thank's a lot!! Actualy this is the first video I really felt to have some of progress. 🙌🏼
Niiiiiice. You got this!
My harmonica just came today and this is the first song I am learning a part of.
I've been playing ukulele since March last year (2020) and I was practicing Desolation Row a few days ago and loved the harmonica solo while I listened to the original song. I don't know how long it will take me to learn something akin to that but once I do, I will be unstoppable!
Nice! Congrats. You can do it! You could be playing songs like that within a few months. If you're really wanting to turbocharge you growth you might like to check out my Beginner to Boss course:
www.harmonica.com/lessons/
Thanks Luke, this is the shizzle! Feel like have finally taken a huge step on the harmonica by isolating those notes so easily with your wonderful tuition and technique!
My harmonica won't be gathering dust no more! :-)
I have been looking for that song for at least 8 years. 8 friggin' years. I gave it a listen too and i couldnt remember anything from it except the tune you're tutorialing here. God Bless You, really
Wow, what an amazing story. Great song. Lee Oskar is the man. God bless you too my friend!
Aloha,
Luke
Great simple instructions, I needed this bad thanks Luke, I can’t wait to continue learning
Nice, Warren. I recommend really getting comfy with single notes, maintaining deep relaxed mouth position, before starting to work on bending.
These are super nice tips learning harmonica, puckering away on my first day.
This is one of the video's that made me buy my first harmonica and i really like it so far.
Thank you for this video.
Oh WOW Gerard! I'm so honored that one of my videos helped you make the decision to buy one of the best instruments in the world! Thanks for the note. You got this! Rock on! 😎
Luke - your tutorials are fantastic - you make learning very enjoyable - thank you!!
You are most welcome Simon!
Thanks a bunch. Step by step, moving forward. Awesome!
You got this!
Aways a pleasure, Luc. Thank you !!
You’re welcome, Christian. Thanks for the note.
This is a great lesson! It’s packed with goodies!! Thank you 🙏😎🎶🎶🎶🎶
Right on Mary! I’ve got to give a shot out to the great JP Allen for all the goodies!
Thank you for doing this. You have a great way of explaining this to beginners!
Right on Alan! Thanks.
This was really helpful as an absolute beginner. First time I’ve been able to get single notes in and out. Subscribed
Yes, Wade! It’s only just begun, my friend. Rock on!!
Blimey, That's splendid mate! Thank you very much. Fantastic job! Once again hats off to you
Glad you enjoyed it. You're very welcome, and thanks for your kind words.

My pleasure! Rock on! 😎
Thanks for the taking the time and showing how to play single notes and how to breathe too. I am just a beginner and this really helped.
Glad it was helpful! Congrats on your decision to start playing harp. This is the most important foundation for you: www.harmonica.com/how-to-play-the-harmonica/
I have been trying for months to understand how and why I can isolate single notes while playing with relaxed breathing. Your video is great, your explanation clear! I'm glad I didn't give up. Thanks
Wonderful! I'm so glad you didn't give up as well, and I hope that you keep playing for the rest of your life! You are very welcome.
Aloha,
Luke
a hour and a half watching you and i can now play one of my favorite songs. thanks

Glad it was helpful! Thanks for the note. Rock on,
Luke
Thank you! I am loving the lessons.
You're welcome Ron. Glad you like them!
Luke, you are saving my life here... Just a great method... Everything you were mentioning here was on the spot for my problems.. It is obvious you experienced the same issues when you were a beginner.. Thanks so much, Brother...
Bruce - right on, man. Glad it helped. Yeah, I don’t think anyone picks up a harmonica, and just plays single notes without some effort.
Luke, plain and simple...
YOU ROCK! 🎶🎵🎼
Thanks Rob. Right back atcha buddy.
I just want to say thank you, you're such a good teacher.
Right on Dan! THANKS! 🤙🏼
The best instruction, got my first single note within minutes. Thank you.
