thank you for putting your knowledge of the harmonica on the internet; for all to access the ability to master the harmonica (the greatest tool known to man kind), but unfortunately I am busy saving the lives of American citizens across the globe. Perhaps one day in my long never ending cycle of immortality I will be able to settle down and play "i want candy" on my harmonica. I hope to see you again some day.
@@Harmonicacom Thank you Luke! I just happened to stumble across your video and it's obvious you have a passion for the harmonica and teaching. Thank you for what you do!

Thank you for being here to get me moving along. Didn't know if I would like it, but here I am a month later eeking out time wherever to practice. Again, Thank you for sharing your expertise.
I watched this quite a while back and am thrilled I came back to it. Though very basic, it's the basics which seem to build the best foundation. Thanks Luke!
Thanks Man! I've been learning guitar on UA-cam since 2015 and Harmonica just from a couple of days, but with this video I finally understood how chords and chord progression work! and plus, now I can play "I want Candy"!
Great videos man. Bought a Lee Oskar harmonica a few months ago and i am having a blast playing it and learning with these videos. Keep up the awesome work!
I am so blessed to visit your site. You are a very good teacher. Keep up your good work. I play the ukulele, this is helpful. I love the Blue too. I m in Singapore, Asia, very few or nobody teach blue harmonica.
The big advantage from numbering the notes 1-7 and roman numerals for chords is that you can then pick up any diatonic instrument in any key and then play the same song in same mouth positions as original key you first played it in. I even notate all my songs using this notation. I play irish flute with the same system. Although can't play chords on a flute. Harp is extra special in that sense. Hence the name Harmonica. The other huge advantage is you can learn the distinctive sounds of the seven note numbers and chords (99% of all songs use just these 7 notes). To then transcribe almost any song into any other key you want.
man, I got a harmonica for birthday 5 years ago, started a few times but never continued. your lessons are so great and finally gave me the motivation boost I needed! Thanks for that!

Hi, Where in a video do you talk about how to jump from the four hole to the eight hole, back to six, then to a two accurately? How do you know where you are on the harmonica close enough to hit a whole cleanly moving from several holes over? Thanks sooo much 😊
Hey Joseph - yeah this is a great question. The trick I use it store slide slowly counting until you land on the right note, and then work on increasing the speed. Blow to blow or draw to draw is easy. If you're doing a jump AND a change in air direction I think usually change air direction before starting the slide. You'll find that in addition to helping you find the hole, a slide on the harmonica often sounds very musical. Hope that helps. Rock on.

The owner flex track looks comfortable. I haven't tried it yet… The Seydel gecko is pretty nice. I'm not crazy about the magnet, but I definitely like it better than the run-of-the-mill holder.
Hey Luke... You have answered me on here before to day, and so i'm hoping you can maybe help me this 'once more' ?....When playing 12 bar blues there seems to be two conflicting thoughts on what chords are to be played. I know the chord progression, but some say it's the 1,3 and 5. Others telling me 1, 4, and 5. would you, if you have a minute tell me where i'm getting confused.... Thanks, and thanks for all the videos you've shared on here. They've certainly helped ME !
Right on, I'm so glad the videos are helping, and, yes I can clarify this for you for sure! So a chord is a group of 3 or more notes played at the same time. The simplest chord is a triad, a 3-note chord. The notes within the chord are the root note, plus a 3rd and a 5th above that. So EACH chord is CREATED by playing Root, Third, and Fifth (1-3-5.) Now the root of each chord in the 12 bar blues is numbered from the major scale. So the ROOTS of each chord in the 12-Bar blues are either the 1st, 4th, or 5th note in the major scale of the same key that the blues is in. Does that make sense? Hey it seems like you're getting pretty deep into this stuff, you might enjoy checking out my Beginner to Boss course. Module 9 is a music theory appendix. You can see the course lessons overview here: www.harmonica.com/lessons/
Hey Luke, How do you breathe while playing the riff? We inhale 4 times and exhale 1 time. Any advice at this stage to not turn blue 🤓? Thank you for the awesome job. 🙏🏾
Yeah, when you blow "out-gas" through your nose at the same time to get more air out. And when you're drawing, make sure you're not letting air come in through the nose! (You can pinch your nose to confirm.)
I'm just beginning to "pick up" playing the harmonica. So, I need to ask you how you do the "Ta Ka" bit while playing it. I hope you can explain it for us. Thank you for sharing your talent with us all. Keep the videos coming, please.
Hey Curtrice - thanks for the note! the first key is to have the deep relaxed mouth position taught here: www.harmonica.com/how-to-play-the-harmonica-714.html Once you’ve got that, simply say the consonants in time.

Brian - yeah, man, you got the right idea! I call it “learning by immersion.” Just keep on listening, relax, and don’t worry. The concepts you’re seeking to understand are going to come together for you soon. Also, part of the fun of the musical journey is that there is always more to learn!
FYI: My upcoming videos will address the 12-Bar Blues and Keys and Positions. Also, have you seen Scales for Beginners? ua-cam.com/video/nkUAbVIcMSw/v-deo.html Some of the building blocks in this Chords for Beginners lesson are concepts that I introduced and explained in Scales for Beginners.
1 4 and 5 just refer to the key playing in ! Example if you playing in c major the c note is the 1 chord and the second note on the c scale is d so D would be the 2 chord and same works with every other chord just different sequence of notes
Helpful video. Just had a question. When you were explaining the 5 chord in 1st position, I got a little lost as to how that chord works for drawing on any hole between 1 and 5. Could you explain that a bit?
Sure thing. 1st position key of C, the V chord is a G7 spelled G-B-D-F (1-3-5-b7.) On the C harmonica: -1 = D -2 = G -3 = B -4 = D -5 = F So, you see all of those notes are in the G7 Chord. From -1 to -5, it's 5th, Root, 3rd, 5th, b7th. So if you play any 3 of those notes, you will be playing some part of the G7 chord. Does that make sense? LMK. Aloha, Luke
Right on Wade. Glad the lessons are helping. Good question! The trick is out-gassing, meaning when you're blowing through the harp you allow air to go out through your nose at the same time so that you can get twice as much air out in the same amount of time. And on the flip side, make sure you are NOT accidentally allowing air to come IN through your nose when you are drawing. You can confirm this by pinching your nose with one hand while you're playing. Hope that helps! Rock on, Luke
where I can find the left and aspirated hole tablature of the 7 main harmonica positions, tablature (blown and asepid from the 7 positions) (1st, 2nd, 3rd ... straight harp, cross harp etc) 7 correct positions including bends,
Can play ii: -456 Can only play 2 notes of iii chord: 23, and 56 Can only play 2 notes of IV chord: -56 Cannot play vi chord Hope that helps! Aloha, Luke
I just run it under the tap, hottest water that my hands can handle, both ways several times, as strong a flow as possible, and then tap against palm and blow/draw to dry. Leave it out of the case for a couple hours to make sure it dries thoroughly before putting back.
I feel like I already knew this, coming from a pretty deep background in music theory. But I'm a beginner on the harmonica. I'd like to learn how to play the rest of the diatonic chords, but I'm not seeing anything about harmony on a diatonic harp besides this :(

Great lessons. Thank you.
Glad you like it. You’re very welcome
Helped me alot.,..thanks... CHI-TOWN HERE 👑 AMOR ⏳⌛😎

Sweet. Rock on!
Is there a video somewhere on what positions mean? I'm lost there already.
Yeah, it's confusing at the beginning. This might help: ua-cam.com/video/V2aokP8GriI/v-deo.html
Thank you so much for your help👍👍👍👍👍💪💪💪💪👏👏👏👏👏💖😘
You’re welcome. Aloha!
Helpful video. Just had a question. When you were explaining the 5 chord in 1st position, I got a little lost as to how that chord works for drawing on any hole between 1 and 5. Could you explain that a bit?
Sure thing. 1st position key of C, the V chord is a G7 spelled G-B-D-F (1-3-5-b7.)
On the C harmonica:
-1 = D
-2 = G
-3 = B
-4 = D
-5 = F
So, you see all of those notes are in the G7 Chord. From -1 to -5, it's 5th, Root, 3rd, 5th, b7th.
So if you play any 3 of those notes, you will be playing some part of the G7 chord.
Does that make sense?
LMK.

Luke
More awesomeness!! Question, How do you avoid accumulating air? Whenever I get a good rhythm going on this tune I end up with full lungs ,:)
Rock on,
Luke
thank you for the help
Happy to help Bob!
where I can find the left and aspirated hole tablature of the 7 main harmonica positions, tablature (blown and asepid from the 7 positions) (1st, 2nd, 3rd ... straight harp, cross harp etc) 7 correct positions including bends,
Joao - I’m not sure. I’d recommend focusing on positions 1-3 though.
I have an harmonica in G and my question is: are there different chords for G and C harmonica’s? Or can I play the same chords on both?
Same chord relationships. I-V
Blowing C harmonica is C, drawing is G
Blowing G harmonica is G, drawing is D
Does that make sense?
@@Harmonicacomyes! Thank you very much!!

I, in first position, can we play to the ii, iii, IV and VI chords?
Can play ii: -456
Can only play 2 notes of iii chord: 23, and 56
Can only play 2 notes of IV chord: -56
Cannot play vi chord
Hope that helps!
Aloha,
Luke
I learn much here. Looks so easy
Yay! Easy it is!
Like like like , thanks for the video !
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
What is the easy way to clean a Harmonica without pulling it apart? I got Fender Blues Deluxe 10 hole.
I just run it under the tap, hottest water that my hands can handle, both ways several times, as strong a flow as possible, and then tap against palm and blow/draw to dry. Leave it out of the case for a couple hours to make sure it dries thoroughly before putting back.
@@Harmonicacom Thank you so much! That really helps!
I feel like I already knew this, coming from a pretty deep background in music theory. But I'm a beginner on the harmonica. I'd like to learn how to play the rest of the diatonic chords, but I'm not seeing anything about harmony on a diatonic harp besides this :(
Yep, there's not much more you can do on diatonic than this!!
Wow thank you .
You are so welcome!
