One of my favorite things I’ve heard about Jimi Hendrix was how much he practiced. He always had the guitar on him. People who toured with him said it was common to find him in the morning, on the bed, still dressed, bed still made, asleep with the guitar still in his hands. I’ve done that a couple times and remember being so proud the first time I did it. That’s pure passion and dedication. Growing up, whenever I got into something new, if I wasn’t able to do it right off the bat, I would get frustrated and quit. Until high school when I realized that I loved guitar and skating so much, that I have to get good at them no matter what. It wasn’t even a choice. It’s like my soul was telling me this is something I absolutely have to do, something I can’t live without. Those two things taught me how to learn, and that nothing is out of your reach if your willing to make an effort, and put in the time and the work.
@Internet User i do play guitar everyday and risk my teeth everytime I step on a skateboard haha ! my question was meant for the original poster tho, but thanks ! keep on rocking
That 12 string sounds incredible. It has a sort of dissonant jangle to it and when he hits that open c chord at the end of the first clip it just resonates so nicely.
A few of the strings are very slightly out of tune and the guitar has a warble to it. It almost makes it sound old timey like the old pianos that sound like they're part underwater? I know there's probably better vocabulary for these acoustics but I'm trying to deal with the slight out of tune-ness. Jimi loves me though. 🙂
Clapton almost quit playing. Then he became a huge racist yelling slurs after concerts if he had a few too many lol. So you could say that. When Jimi came to England all the white boy blues guys shat their pants. Some went for envy other simply absorbed everything and became better players themselves.
Clapton became good friends with Jimi. I don't know where you got the racist bs from, but it is a straight up lie. Every musician that played with Jimi loved him, they all got famous from stealing his licks and using them in there music. If you can call that stealing, because there is very little actual "new" music. Ritchie Blackmore tells how everyone in the period were influenced (stole) from Jimi's music. It's pretty incredible when you here it explained by one of the best guitarists of the time.

@@glennjames7107 I remember reading he was playing at a club, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton and others were there. They looked at him, he said they were all crying because they knew they had been surpassed as guitar players.
We're lucky that they had high quality film like this even back then, of course this is probably touched up but the rare times we get of classic rock stars in this quality, it feels like they're still with us, or still in their prime. Just for a moment. Forever immortalized not just through music.
Its funny because footage from the 80s when everything was filmed on digital tapes looks soooo much worse and gets worse by the day. These old film reels are priceless.
Film is always better than digital. Just more pixels and more to work with when footage is shot on film. They probably worked to get grain out (of this reel wasn’t kept properly) but other than that, no big touch up needed.
12 string guitar ain't easy to play, that deserves extra points 😄 Everyone should hear the album "Jimi Hendrix Blues" if they haven't already. These recordings are on it, and many more.

that's the truth though, Jimi was on a talk show and the host said 'you're one of the greatest guitar players in the world' and he looked embarrassed and he said 'how about the best guitar player sitting in this chair'
I'm 60 and I first heard Jimi in the late 1960s. I can still vividly remember the force of his impact on rock music just as I can still remember hearing Purple Haze and Foxy Lady on the radio for the first time. He was the first rock guitarist I heard who played rhythm and lead seamlessly and fluidly without having to stop doing one to begin the other. What he did on guitar said "natural born talent" but how he combined that facility with his wonder touched imagination forged a kind of intimate magic that has to my way of thinking never been equalled, and probably never will be.
People need to see his Killing Floor performance @ Monterey 67. He rocked the stage just as well as Mercury did - one reason people think Mercury was the best frontman was because the audience were able to join in the songs.. I'd rather experience Jimi in all his glory

I suppose another way of looking at it, is if he had lived, Jimi might have slowly faded into obscurity and ended up writing less original ideas etc. His sudden death immortalized his music, because he died at the height of his creativity, a living legend. That caused people to hold very near and dear all his great work. I always had a feeling Jimi's time on earth was to give the world a great catalog of highly original music and once he did that, it was time to 'leave'
He was probably even higher then usual when this private recording was shoot. Even if his music isn't my favorite of all, being a guitar player for more than 30 years, I never saw anybody being as naturally gifted as Jimmy Hendrix.
He messes up and then gives a totally different, unique approach and flawless take Jd the same song. Every time he played a song, he played it differently. That’s the wildest part about Hendrix. He was living liquidity, able to dance around the core patterns of his songs effortlessly in a way the presented differently but similarly in each iteration. He was a once in a millennium type of dude.

It's said that he was a perfectionist. He didn't want to release things that he deemed not good enough, though by our standards im sure we've missed out on some absolute gems
Once in an interview Jimi said that his music was still evolving and he believed that in 10 years he will be thrice as good as he was at that time but sadly two years later he passed away. Imagine if he would have lived till 80 or more what would have been his level of music.
I think his reach would have been profoundly wide. He was excited by everything. All the stuff he was doing with Buddy Miles could have led anywhere. I can easily see him having done 70s stuff that might be sold as jazz albums. It would have been fascinating to see what a slightly older Jimi made of 70s America and 70s Britain - two increasingly different places. I can easily imagine him travelling and settling for periods all over the world, listening and playing as he went. At 78, he'd probably have orchestral works under his belt as well as collaborations with people like Fela Kuti, maybe some percussive Mediterranean based musical culture whether Arabic or otherwise, lots of concerts. But he would still be a blues guitarist. That would always be there. There's no doubt about that for me.
He wrote 1983 on acoustic guitar. You tube used to have a recording of him in his NYC apartment playing it but its long gone now. It was great to hear the evolution of that great song. Plus Hendrix on acoustic.
I read a story about that he wanted to cut the filming and save what little bit the camera man had left in the camera you see Jimi was aware of the fact that the film was just about gone and he was trying to conserve what little film was left I can totally relate to what that was about he wanted to make sure it would make it till the end of the little ditty he was hammering out that blows me away he would care so much about getting on the tiny amount of film left cool right yeah Jimi was cool like that

Stephen Stills talked about that. Jimi's hands were bigger than everyone's. Stills said he only saw one other guitar player physically built like that - SRV.
As a guitar player having long, straight, strong, slender fingers like Jimi's makes the instrument much less of a physical challenge, so you can focus on the music - Robert Johnson had similar hands which is a little eerie
@@limeplasterer2766 Absolutely true but its worth noting that Billy Gibbons has tiny hands and did not move around a lot of the fret board yet made of the most memorial blue riffs and music ever. And he was a personal favorite of Hendrix. Something I have reminded myself of a lot over the years since I do not have those giant hands either, but players like Billy prove you don't have to have them to make memorable music. the reason Jimi said he was "scared to death" was only because Peter Neal (who was making the documentary) told him before they started shooting this section, they only had a few minutes of film left in the camera. (film was expensive even then, people were making films with not much money) The guys were shooting a different film for the band. they asked Jimi if they use the end of the roll of film on him playing an acoustic, which would be different. He had no acoustic guitar with him so one of the guys ran back to his house to get his Zemaitis 12 string acoustic (which at the time were made in London by Tony Zemaitis) just so Jimi could play this piece, he never used this guitar again as it wasn't his. they also had to re-string it because of Jimi being left handed.
@@antoinettedresser6446 Yes, he played a right-handed Fender restrung for him. I'm left handed so I checked out what that means. There's a great article with laymen explanations of the significance. If I remember, the strings are reversed so the lengths are different and the tension is different which results in a unique sound. Also, the heights of the magnets in the pickups are reversed so again a unique sound. He adapted and overcame the obstacle of being left-handed.
Jimi did of course play a right handed guitar re strung upside down, left hand Strats were non existent. But he did occasionally for show play a right handed guitar upside down without being restrung with friends. This twelve string is restrung left handed. But here's the thing that no one ever mentions, Jimi was actually right handed, so it wasn't that tricky for him. He wrote right handed and did everything else like throw right handed. He's bending the strings because this guitar is tuned down two whole steps to C from standard E.
Such a humble guy, worrying about the camera crew "wasting" their film when he doesn't play perfectly. What a time. These days that's of no concern! Such a shame Hendrix died. He was a legend.

I would imagine that for a left handed guitar player that this would not be that strange a thing to as they'd constantly be running into right handed guitarists with their way of stringing their guitars. Check out the UA-cam video titled: Ronnie Wood and Jimi Hendrix shared an Apartment Together.
Key is to drop the tuning which he mostly did. He also did that because he used a hybrid set of strings and to maintain the tension ; an important part of his unique sound which most people ignore.

Anybody who has played them knows. An acoustic 12 string has a much heavier/stiffer feel under the fretting hand than a Fender Tele/Strat. Jimi needed, what, all of 5 minutes to warm up on it (in an alternate tuning, mind you) and then he played and sang like it was business as usual. That’s the mark of a true pro player, right there
@@wand_ERRer I would assume either regular low E tuned to D or “double drop D” (aka the Joni Mitchell/Stephen Stills tuning) both high and low E strings (courses, in the case of a 12 string guitar) tuned down to D

Hey Joe was released as a single on December 16, 1966, marking his first solo release. Hendrix died on September 18, 1970.
@Internet User Barely. I still follow what’s going on the skating world but rarely do anything beyond cruising around my neighborhood.

That guitar is a rare Zemaitis twelve string, built in 1960. Look up Tony Zemaitis. He built some fantastic guitars for the stars.

It would have been fascinating to see what a slightly older Jimi made of 70s America and 70s Britain - two increasingly different places.
Great story
what a save! thank god the cameraman didnt listen to jimi cause we would never have been able to see him perform like this.
You seem to know quite a lot about jimi so, Is it true that because he was left handed, didn't he play the guitar upside down
@@antoinettedresser6446 Yes, he played a right-handed Fender restrung for him.

@@j.bradleyheck1589 That said he lived a brief time with Ron Wood of the Rolling Stones when he arrived in England and Wood said Jimi was always playing and it was frustrating to seem him grab my, turn it over and that he still played .well. I think if he grabbed Wood's guitar and flipped it then the strings would be so called upside down. I've read other players who knew Jimi who made the same comment. I would imagine that for a left handed guitar player that this would not be that strange a thing to as they'd constantly be running into right handed guitarists with their way of stringing their guitars. Check out the UA-cam video titled: Ronnie Wood and Jimi Hendrix shared an Apartment Together.
Dude says he was scared to death, continues to play one of the most soulful pieces of blues music I’ve ever heard.
Man you gotta have strong fingers to bend double strings on the 1st and 2nd fret!
Definitely! This was tuned to C standard so its somewhat easier though.
Key is to drop the tuning which he mostly did. He also did that because he used a hybrid set of strings and to maintain the tension ; an important part of his unique sound which most people ignore.
It's actually not that hard. He's was tuned down 2-3 whole steps so the strings are very loose.
@Mr. Majora He had it for all his Strats for sure. That really made a difference
@@skyent9513 It's 2 steps down in the first song.
Jimi was from Seattle, but he was, in the real sense of the term, a BLUESMAN. ...He was a voracious listener, and took in anything and everything that had a guitar in it...He absorbed the Blues like a sponge, and became one of the genre's most innovative artists...

That’s the mark of a true pro player, right there
tuning? dropped D?
@@wand_ERRer I would assume either regular low E tuned to D or “double drop D” (aka the Joni Mitchell/Stephen Stills tuning) both high and low E strings (courses, in the case of a 12 string guitar) tuned down to D

the amount of film used on filming his films is astronomical, not even including digital media.

Jimi was cool on-stsge but not so much off-stage. He was addicted to amphetamines and when he mixed drugs and alcohol (almost daily), he was obnoxious and violent, especially with women. Alcohol, amphetemines, and LSD is a bad mixture. He would skip songs on the song list when he forgot the lyrics.
