Super Mario Bros. 2 (NES) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

- A playthrough of Nintendo's 1988 platformer for the NES, Super Mario Bros. 2.
The video shows the entire game without the use of warp zones.
Super Mario Bros. 2 was amazing game that completely broke away from the conventions established by the first Super Mario Bros. game. The reason it differed so much was that it is the Americanized version of Japanese disk system game that had nothing to do with Mario. Nintendo of America's Howard Phillips deemed the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2 (which was eventually released in the west as "The Lost Levels" in Super Mario All-Stars) likely to be both too difficult and too similar to the first game to appeal to American customers, so the company repurposed and polished up Doki Doki Panic, a disk system game also created by Nintendo's EAD team. This version of Mario 2 did make its way back to Japan years later under the name Super Mario USA, and was also later updated and re-released as part of Super Mario All-Stars on the SNES and as Super Mario Bros. Advance for on the Game Boy Advance.
The puzzle elements, character selection, and the incredibly bright graphics all made this oddity a sheer joy to play when it was new, and the game is still feels great to play these days. As a kid, I loved the exotic settings, the ability to find secrets in Subcon (the shadowy parallel dimension), and the way each level played so differently depending on who you chose to use.
It wasn't really any easier or harder than the first Super Mario Bros., but the challenge felt very different. The gameplay is much less linear, and there are some unique puzzle elements that have been thrown into the mix. I still remember as a kid how satisfied I felt when I finally figured out how to get across the huge gap at the beginning of World 1-2, or when I discovered the warp zone hidden in the whale stage. There was so much to find in Mario 2, and the secrets went far beyond finding hidden blocks in the background.
Mario 2 feels like a much more solid step forward than The Lost Levels was, and it's far more accessible for people of different skill levels. If felt very different from Super Mario Bros., but it was just as well made, and like its predecessor, it was a massive success.
All things said and done, I think Nintendo made the right decision. Given the choice, I'm glad that the US folks went with this instead of the first Super Mario Bros. 2. How about you guys? Which did you prefer?
Happy birthday, Mario!

The music from this game has lived rent free in my head for 35 years. Amazing.

Yep, always loved this one. I remember my dad took me to a big city near where we lived. We would always do this the day after Thanksgiving. My city did not have a Toys R Us or any specialty game stores back in 1988, so we had to drive out of town to experience such things. While exploring the Toys R Us, there was Super Mario Bros. 2 in stock. It was the first time I had ever seen it, aside from reading about it since that past summer in the debut issue of Nintendo Power. My dad saw how excited I was, and led me to another part of the store, telling me he was going to go to the bathroom nearby. Little did I know, he was picking the game up for me for Christmas that year. That Christmas, not only did I get Mario 2, but also Zelda II: The Adventure of Link (I think they ordered this through a JC Penney Christmas catalog), and Bubble Bobble. I even get a Nintendo shirt that year, which I made sure to wear when I went back to school after Christmas Vacation, and was a big hit with my fellow Nintendo-playing friends. To this day, still one of the best Christmas memories I have.
I remember those catalogs. That's actually how I got Blaster Master and my old blue Game Boy.
Just thinking about them alone is a real trip back.
Nice! Those are two great games that were second installments off of legendary hard to rival originals. Is it weird that although I loved the first super mario and the first zelda, I enjoyed Super Mario 2 and Zelda 2 more? Anyway, thanks for sharing a great memory of what seemed like an epic christmas!
This gem is such a vast improvement from SMB 1 its not even funny.
That's cool, man ! Mario 2 was always one of my favorites. I Remember circling the toys I wanted in that big ass JC penny catalog at Christmas time when I was a kid.
I love Bubble Bobble!!!!!!
Mario 2 was such a weird and unexpected change from the original, but I loved it completely, and thirty years later, that hasn't changed one iota. Maybe the Mario madness got to me :)
i agree this game is awesome! as far as i'm concerned its the true sequel always thought a 3d remake could be interesting
Is there a cure for mario madness? Im still suffering from a terrible case of pac-man fever
@@fahriakalin5936 Just play lots of Dr. Mario and you're good.
He's got the madness! Sterilize him before anyone else catches it!
I Completed Mario 2 Twice, It Has Lots To Offer than The Lost Levels, You're Right About Nintendo Making The Right Call!
I loved this game as a kid, the music, the characters, the atmosphere..I loved everything about it. It's so nostalgic to see the intro after all these years
Yes, It was definitively the right call from Nintendo. And despite its odd status, it has become part of the Mario lore by introducing the iconic Shyguys.
Birdo, Ninji, and Bob-omb also were in other Mario games and spin offs.
Pokey
Even Phanto, which reappeared in SMM2
Such a classic. Nintendo built the hype with that first issue of Nintendo Power, and I ate it all up. This is still one of my most favorite endings to a video game.
35 years of Super Mario! Happy birthday.
*well technically its 39 because marios first appearance was in the donkey kong gane from 1981*
@@JulianR2JG In Donkey Kong, Mario's previous name was Mr. Video.
Maverick Hunter Meta ik thats a joke
@@JulianR2JG Mario Bros. isn't considered part of the Super Mario Bros. series, though.

growing up with an older brother, a shared bedroom and 1 nintendo...i had to wait my turn to play any games. ive come to enjoy watching my brother play games as he would always get 1st to play. this was 1 of his favorites. we could sit there for hours, not even saying a word to each other, while he played and i watched. hearing this music hits me right in the feels. i miss those times.

I remember getting this for Christmas when I was 5. The princess was always my favorite because she could fly.
That ending man. One of the best ending music of all time, so melodic.
look up jeff holzem on sound cloud- he made an old school fruity loops version

of all the Mario games NES, SNES, and N64, this was the only one I couldn't finish
these games are so iconic omg they bring back a certain feeling omg i feel so old.
Omg
The biggest letdown, it was only a dream.....
True but it's a wild dream
It was all a dream, I used to read birdo magazine.
This slightly retooled Doki Doki Panic was a sure-fire hit back in the day. Mario Mania was palpable! But it's pretty fun in its own right, lifting stuff over your head and throwing them at foes, it's all rather innovative. I love the ending.
When I first seen how the princess could glide, no one could convince me to use any other character 😂

Thank you, Miyamoto.
One of my favorite games as kid growing up in the 1990s being born in 1986. Would play the original and Super Mario Bros, Turtles games, Double Dragon 2 and 3 etc quite a bit. Nostalgia kicks in when watching the clips of games.
I loved this, Zelda 2, and Castlevania 2
nice list of games
56:18 peach starts dancing to the music
Such a classic we will never again see Mario 1 2 and 3 and super Mario world those games had too much soul
Hey if you like watching someone play video games on UA-cam watch Dan Vasc he is a gamer and also a metal singer!
I think that Peach's appearance in this game could have been the cause of Daisy's obscurity to the west because Daisy used to have the Peach-like hair when Daisy first appeared in Super Mario Land. Anyways, I'm happy we got a different Super Mario Bros. 2. The Japanese Mario 2 looked like a romhack of the original Super Mario Bros., so we got this one instead. Although the Japanese Mario 2 was a real game, it looked like a romhack of the original Super Mario Bros. so we got a Mario 2 that was a Mario skin of Doki Doki Panic. Fun Fact: Doki Doki Panic was intended to be a Mario game, but their dream came true when Doki Doki Panic was changed to a Mario game outside of Japan.
That couldn't be possible because Super Mario Bros. 2 came out a year before Super Mario Land
This is such a fun game. Toad is my favorite to play as.
I love this game. Only beat it once back in the day and I can see why it wasn't as popular as one or three but it definitely has charm.
It should have been an original, so it would have the same storyline of all Super Mario games. But it’s still pretty cool
I've forgotten so much of this. The game still looks great.
Hey if you like watching someone play video games on UA-cam watch Dan Vasc he is a gamer and also a metal singer!
Jeez, I remember playing this game 8-9 years ago. It feels so nastolgical to see this gameplay.
I need to try this game again...
Nostalgic
I still remember trying this out when I was younger, since my parents had all three games along with their old NES still intact.
Once it started up, I was like "Wait, why's there a character select screen? And why can't I jump on enemies?!" Probably the same reaction everyone had back when this came out, lol
When I first rented this, I figured out how to pick up and throw enemies, but knew nothing about picking Birdo's eggs out of the air to throw at him (or her as the manual for the NES game states, he thinks he's a girl according to that manual).
@@Bloodreign1 birdos a boy? I thought he was a girl?
@@Bloodreign1 trans birdo??? im so confused
@@ivycantthinkofaname4303Nowadays Nintendo made Birdo a girl, but in this game she was pretty much trans
Oh yes! My favourite Super Mario Brothers game of all time. I had all 3 Super Mario Brothers games. I was always the princess 👸 when I played this one.
one of my favorites. I wish Nintendo would revisit subcon. First time playing Mario 2 I was blown away how different it was, but enjoyed the hell out of it. The different characters was my favorite aspect. I'd cheese my way w/ Princess
30 years later i realized that i have never even come close to finishing any of these games 😢 thank god for the ps1 and memory cards
I remembered my Dad bring this stuff to me with several game cassettes include this one in the morning. That is my special childhood memory.
Game of the Year BABY!
I love that underwater theme variation at the beginning of the game.👍
Ayyyyyy game of the year still the King!!111!

My favorite Mario!!!!! I love this game . I beat this game 2-3 times a year just to see how many extra lives I can earn in slot game. I dont warp, game is the best.
I beat this game at least 15-20 times within the last year. It never gets old!
I have always choosen princess for every stage than other three players ❤ Awesome golden childhood memories ❤
I have passed All the levels of Super Mario Bros 2 on 12/26/2020. It was fun, exhausting at times 😩 and so cool. 😎😎😎
Congrats! Such a great game.
I absolutely loved this when I was little.
Memories. My classmate sort of loved playing it. I myself remember the music and stuff. So different from part 1... I miss the '90s.
Lots of people claim this is just a reskin of Doki Doki Panic!, but in actuality, Super Mario Bros. 2 is an enhanced version of the game with several improvements to the gameplay and graphics as well. Try looking at any of the waterfalls in Doki Doki Panic! without your eyes burning, for example.
But it has the same level design and enemies as the FDS, thus making it a reskin.
@@Dorian_Scott Like I said, there were improvements to the gameplay as well. You can hold B to run in Super Mario Bros. 2 for example, something that wasn't possible in Doki Doki Panic!
rcblazer makes sense as doki doki panic was originally a Mario prototype game before it got retooled as doki doki panic and retooled in the us as super Mario brothers 2
They added Clawgrip in the SMB2 USA
Oh, *_yeah_* . I *completely* forgot about that! I think in the FDS version, you fought _Mouser_ again instead of Clawgrip.
Feeling old yet??? Gotta love the classics
Thank goodness Nintendo released these games on the Switch so we could relive the childhood memories again! 😁🔥
Managed to defeat the first Super Mario Bros after so many tries! 😂 for the NES now I’m doing the 2nd one here and following the tutorial as well while playing :D
Nice! I just did a video of SMB 2 a few weeks ago, although not nearly as complete. This Mario really stands out for being different. Much love from Indonesia!
Glad they put all three games on the NES classic myself!!!
For real. It's just not the NES without the holy trifecta
@@NintendoComplete You can't have the NES classic without GOTY
God I remember sitting around Christmas of 1988 playing this for hours and hours during Christmas break....
Unlike Karate Kid, Double Dragon II, Ghosts N Goblins,or Karnov...You know those games that were just way too damned hard.....
Mario 2 was a relaxing game. You could just play for hours without getting frustrated
Mario 2 (the us version) is definitely not only a perfect sequel (just like sonic 2 street fighter 2 mega man 2 etc) but it also changed the game by providing more world building in the Mario universe (although I feel that the whole thing is a dream ending didn’t need to exist since this definitely feels like another world in the Mario universe) I wouldn’t say the game is underrated since it is respected by fans recently but it definitely deserves more credit then it got
This Dude loves his stars lol.. thanks for sharing your mario 2 walkthrough.. i mean, run, walk and hop float-through ☮️👍⭕
God does watching this being back memories. I always liked this one when I was a kid
Liked the skill you showed catching bombs in midair as my boy Luigi
Legit came here just to hear the game music and enjoy the nostalgia as I work. You wouldn't believe how calming this was for me. 😂

Omg these were the good old days I remember when the Nintendo first came out the Mario Set was a blast good times
I loved this one! Quite a change from the original but very imaginative. Loved the music as well!
I mean was it a really a change though? When this came out the Mario cannon did not exist. At this this point there was one platform game. And prior to that he was climbing scaffolds to punch an ape.
9 Days until _Super Mario 3D All-Stars_ releases, and I can't freaking wait. After 2020 it's nice to think about and be excited for something positive for once. Keep up the awesome Mario celebration and Happy 35th from this gamer to you, NintendoComplete!
It's not positive at all. You can play those games on PC and they added nothing to be something special. What a fanboy, geesh
@@mep6302 19,999,999 other people and I disagree with your bait. Go be miserable someplace else.
Fun fact this game is actually a retool of an original game called Doki Doki panic that was based in Japan.
The original SMB 2 wasn't released on NES because they deemed it too difficult and to similar to SMB. However, when SNES and All Stars came out, the "original" SMB2 appeared as "Lost Levels" along with this game.
I like how you pick all the characters for this game
I still remember the first time beaten this game at 12 yrs old 1988
This is the best Super Mario game ever. ❤
Agreed... So left field in comparion to the first one, and it works on every level. Literally.
SMB2 by far was my favorite. Best 🎼 music too, especially when going 'invincible' 1:39. Doesn't last long enough 😇😂
I didn't like this game when I got it as a kid. It seemed too radically different than the first game. It took awhile to appreciate It, but it's a great game.
Watched my older cousin beat this game on a couple occasions when I was only 6 years old. That green frog boss and Mario sleeping at the end will forever be in my mind.
Hey if you like watching someone play video games on UA-cam watch Dan Vasc he is a gamer and also a metal singer!
Its amazing how its the same console as SMB1 game which is just a simple game, they make so much more with SMB2. Its more amazing when they make SMB3 after this.
By the time this game came out in 1988, NES game Mappers and ROM chips were more advanced, and around this time is when games on the NES, and even the arcade, took off graphically. Before 1988 many games on the NES and arcades were a bit more simpler, but by 1988 and beyond, both took a nice leap for the better.
So many memories!
Omg this takes me back 😍😍
Game of the Year Every Year Baby.
your videos helped me a lot
Gotdamn man... feel like I'm in 1989 again... That completely seems like 100 years ago...
Just made my day again.. ❤❤
Such an underrated game
Yes although I prefer the doki doki panic version a bit more in some aspects
I remember , my brother is also stuck on stages 4, because you'll lose all progress once power cut
9:17 those two enemies were like "Nope!"
god this game is a such a vibe, is there any game like it? gonna go back to play it as i never finished as a kid.
When i played this as a kid i thought this game is pure chaos and not realy a mario game. I rather played 1, 3 and yoshis island. But its a good game actually.
Thank you! Haven’t seen this since I was 10!!!
My favorite Mario game... Always chose toad (speed) and princess (floating)
Just got a copy complete in box loved this game as a kid.
Amazing. In 6-2 (night level with birds) I once saw someone playing with Luigi going forward by giving big jumps and even falling onto the faster green birds.
I wish Nintendo still made the original Nintendo as well as the other upgrades, like cube,64 and switch.i love the Super Mario Bros. sequels.and continue the sequel on this Nintendo original.i miss the game console and these kind of cartridges.i am old school.i never gave up the feeling of loving the original Nintendo.
I first played this game when it was a new release in the late '80s; my cousin Mike rented it for the weekend. We didn't have the manual for it so I made up names for some of the enemies. I called that egg-spitting boss "Orlo." Decades later I found out that his name is actually "Birdo." Quite a coincidence that his real name ends in "o" like the name I made up. I still think "Orlo" is a better name for him.
I thought his name was Eglon. No idea why!
We may not have gotten SMB2 on Super mario maker 2, but at least we got a power up based on the mechanics of the game.
Although he was not a real Mario, it was very good and even influenced subsequent marios. being able to carry objects did not exist before but will be preserved in mario 3 and all the following ones. sorry if my english is not good
I love this videogame, greetings from Guaranda, Ecuador.
😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Like many, I absolutely love SMB2. To me it is one of the perfect examples of how a platform game should be done.
Since I'm an adult, I was kinda shocked to discover some people dislike it. Sorry but, this is head and shoulders better than the Japanese one. Is not even a contest. The controls alone leave the other in the dust, let alone graphics, music and the gameplay.
did you know Doki Doki Panic started as a Mario game in development, it explains why certain elements like the POW Block and Super Star were shown.
This 2D Mario game wins in having the best Mario sprite.
I love that game!
8:15 well that super jump explains everything... thank you
I hope they make a sequel of the Mario 3D series featuring Subcon again with Mario and the gang confronting Wart and his minions once more!
- No Level Timers
- No Brick Blocks
- '?' Blocks replaced by Grass to obtain 'Power-Ups'
- Power-Ups replaced by Vegetables and other objects you can throw around (they can spice things up by giving vegetables unique effects when held and/or thrown).
- Conjuring Red Doors by smashing Potions to temporarily enter the alternate reality Subspace where Mushrooms to increase max HP can be found.
- Phanto chasing the player carrying the key he guards.
- Basically all the SMB2 mechanics but evolved.
I just love the otherworldly atmosphere of this game!
GAME OF THE YEAR EVERY YEAR BABYYY
The Mario game (even though it's a re-skin of a different Famicom game) that got featured on the front cover of Nintendo Power volume 1.
Happy 35th Anniversary to Super Mario.
This guy makes it look SO easy.
Not my favorite but still enjoyed it happy 35th mario
I still love the old NES❤
Bought this for our kids ended up playing it more than them . Great game
Esse é um Joguinho muito gostoso de se jogar, não consigo passar da terceira fase
If you get more than 10 coins in a level, the bonos chance will turn to letters instead of numbers
Same if you get more than 100 lives
Great video! Are you planning to do a playthrough of Mario and Warriors on the Super Famicom?
Do you mean mario and wario? Thats my fav game.
Mario & Wario really deserves more attention. Being from *_Game Freak_* , who before Pokémon made quality games like Mendal Palace (🇯🇵 Quinty) on NES and Pulseman on the Genesis.
This is my favorite Nes game
YES ALL DAY I LOVVVVVVEEEEE THIS GAMEEEE 💯✊🏽
The second Mario game I played, though on the GBA.
The irritating voice overs weren't really needed in that version, not sure why Mario needed a voice period.
The US sequel became so successful that Japan re-released the game as Super Mario USA.
So...what's the lore behind Peach's floating ability? Has Nintendo ever bothered to explain it?
always preferred this to the original- gameplay, animation even the music is on point
It was so much better than the first mario.
i love this game.. ❤
