Episode 16
Super Mario Brothers 2 is the 4th best selling game for the NES, which is a pretty big deal considering this didn't even start out as a Mario game!
Originally titled Yume Kojo: Doki Doki Panic, Nintendo just replaced the old characters with Mario, Luigi, Toad and Princess Peach. They did make some other changes, and a few of them alter the game dramatically.
So what happened to the real Super Mario Brothers 2, and how did Nintendo decide to create this game? We'll explore all of that in today's episode!
We'll also go deep on the strategies for beating the game! In this video we'll learn:
* How to beat ALL 20 levels, from 1-1 all the way to 7-2!
* Where to find all of the game's SECRET Warp Zones! Get to the end FAST!
* SHORTCUTS for finishing many of the levels - some of these were intentionally built into the game, and some of them definitely weren't!
* TRICKS for finding TONS of hidden coins, mushrooms and 1-Ups!
* Which character is the BEST for each different level!
* How to defeat EVERY boss, even the final boss, Wart... AND MORE!
Thanks for watching!

This channel is like the modern equivalent of an improved version of the "The Official Nintendo Player's Guide"
1st time I saw someone say this you are so right thank you
I used to have a book called how to beat nes games and it was seriously just like this a legit paperback novel of just walkthroughs with comments and quotes from "experts".
My new favorite channel
The official Nintendo players guide digital version
Or "Nintendo Power" 😀
I've suffered and been in the grasp of addiction, for years the last few days I've been coming off subutex. I still have to have my xanax. But your videos help me though the withdrawal. Thank you I've even started playing my hard nes games. Thank you my doggo friend.
Please friends if you have a drug problem. You can get clean dont substitute what you taking with sub. Its amazing drug but take it no longer than 3 weeks. And never take xanax unless you have crippling anxiety. I do but drugs arent the answer. Ive wasted close to 100k. In 8 years.. i love you all, and your not alone
I hope you are still doing good!!
Beat Mario 2 for the first time today, thanks to this guide. 33 years was too long for that to sit in the backlog!
Yeah, I just completed this last night! 30 plus years of regret just ended. Happily
I did too guys! Personally, I like it better than SB3. I’m gonna get hate for it but I like being able to play 4 different characters with different special jumps.
Congratulations. I'm glad you finally did it. 🙂
I’m on 7-2… by using UA-cam to figure out where all the mushrooms are in 7-2 I found out that this is the finale and I was like holy shit I’ve never been here before😂
I do the whole game with Princess Peach. I was so excited as a kid to be able to play as her. I really enjoy this channel 🤩
Her float was awesome. I used her a lot too.
Yes she was great that floating came in handy.
Nah, Toad is the way to go, hands down. He may not jump high but his speed makes the game literally a breeze.
Toad is
The best character at the beginning and princess at the end because she can float. Luigi is too tough to control, Mario doesn’t do anything well but he isn’t bad at anything either.
@@wjb4578 for sure! Toad nearly 99% of the game. He picks stuff up the fastesr and the princess for one or 2 levels.
But yeah Toad for pros!
Luigis jump is so sloppy and slow!
I'm glad this became Mario 2. It made Nintendo's library more diverse and combined with Zelda 2 shows that sequels can be good without being identical to the games before them.
Same. Mario 3, SMWorld are basically remakes of of what came before with better technology. This is at least an original story with a different boss.
@@davidm4566 yeah original story rofl
Got this game when it first came out and it was the first game I beat. This is one of my favorite games,so much nostalgia for me. Thanks for showing this game the respect it deserves.
Love this game!! So many good memories!
@@UCanBeatVideoGames:
*Fun Fact:* The sound Birdo makes when spitting eggs or fire?? The same sound is heard in The Legend of Zelda (1986 NES) when Wizzrobes fire at Link!
This is my new favorite channel. Thanks a lot for making these, they’re a lot of fun to watch.
I concur..
You’re welcome a lot
At first i thought it was so stupid because i doubt anyone really comes here for the “strategy”. But there is so much passion and love behind these that it reminds me of how I felt about all of these games when they were new. This channel proves that it’s not the content that matters, it’s the heart of the creator. There are a millions other channels but not many with the same amount of heart.

Birdo has the dreamiest eyelashes.
We always knew there was something very weird about SMB2 as kids but never knew why until years later
I would luv to see such an in-depth playthrough of Super Mario Bros. 3 (with all secrets, all items, all hidden blocks, etc.). :)
The evolution of Mario games never disappointed and always added something new. I am glad they chose this to be Mario 2, The Lost Levels seems too much like an extension of the Super Mario Bros. game. I feel Mario 2 set the bar for future Mario games having different mechanics, level design, and possibilities of what a Mario game could be. This game helped shape this franchise into my favorite franchise in gaming.
This is tied with Super Mario Odyssey as my favorite Mario. People today discount it but SMB2 was THE game that propelled Nintendo into the stratosphere in the USA. It totally expanded the idea of what the Mario games could be in a way the series hasn’t seen since Odyssey, imo.
Level 4-2 when you dodge the beezos, we used to call that “the slick n’ chick” when we were kids.
much like the zigzag digging should be called the digzag
Jeff Bezzos is in SMB2 😱 😯
started watching your vids since i got recommended the TMNT one, and been binge watching since. your voice reminds me of hirumaredx/TheDuelLogs
Thanks, Moonie! Glad you're enjoying it!
I also thought of Hirumardex. I started too with the TMNT video.
lol i watch at 1.25 speed to make his voice more like a normal human XD
Another man of culture, I see.
Your walkthroughs are epic, your corny jokes just make it all the better! Thanks so much!
i've just noticed that you're the human version of a player's guide that was popular back in the '80s '90s and early 2000s. keep up the great work :)
This was the game my family got with the NES. It was a pack in title and boy oh boy did i spend hours and hours of my childhood playing this awesome game. I dont care if it is “a real mario game” it was the 1st game i ever played with the name mario attached to it and it will always be my favourite mario game
Watched almost all your videos. We really need to hit the like on these and get you more subs. Great channel. It’s strangely calming and addictive.
Thanks a lot!!
59:16 to the left. ^^
I'm some kind of addicted to your videos... Thank you so much for your work and all the effort.
That 'phanto' mask scared the shit out of me when I was a kid! The idea of some kind of ghost-like monster that can phase through matter relentlessly hunting you down for taking something that didn't belong to you was just terrifying!
These are awesome videos! I love that it's not just a bunch of speedrunning strategies, just how to beat the game. Keep them coming, and as a request I would love to see Faxanadu played
I'm 46 now but as a kid when I beat this game it felt like such a HUGE accomplishment 🤘💯 I beat it again recently on my nes classic mini and it has save states so I have it saved at the boss gauntlet and various castle parts so I can just jump right in and do it again whenever I'm feeling nostalgic 😁
Can’t wait for link to the past 😊
I was terrible at jumping in this game so I always used Princess Peach. The ability to float slower if need be was priceless. LoL 🙂👍
Clawgrip? No I think you mean Clawglip 😂
Gotta love the credits. They even swap Ostro and Birdo...
I had a neighbor who had Mario 2 and the booklet. I was so happy to play it back then. Eventually, I had to return it... despite really not wanting to. Lol.
Had your channel recommended a couple of days ago. I love when channels cover the game history. Star tropics is my favorite game ever. Yes, even more than Mario and Zelda. 😁 I see you did part 1. Will you be doing star tropics 2? I think it is underrated.
Thanks, Starla! StarTropics is one of my favorite games, too, and I'm very excited to cover StarTropics 2. Not sure when, but I expect within the next month or two!
@@UCanBeatVideoGames loved the star tropics 2 vieo! Watched it twice. 😁
If I remember correctly if you take a magic carpet and position yourself at the bottom of the screen so you only see half your body, you move faster.
I should that and record it. Could probably figure out if its faster pretty easily on video, just count the frames.
They ought to make a sequel to this and just call it Luigi's Panic.
🤣🤣🤣 Seriously!
The Donatello of this game 😂
He's like the veteran mode character: hardest to use well but can pull off the most fancy tricks if you master him. Ironically Mario's probably the worst character: a slower Toad that can jump about 1 pixel higher.
Would that not be Luigi's Mansion?
Just found your channel yesterday it's great to see this kind of gameplays now days it brings such good old memories love your videos keep up the good work saludos Desde 🇲🇽 👏👌
Thank you!! Glad you're enjoying it! This was one of my games, I still can't believe how many secrets this decades old game has.
SMB 2 is my FAVORITE Mario release.
My too
I always wondered how well received 'Doki Doki Panic' was in Japan, before it was ever considered to become a Mario Title.
I played the Arabian theme one. It felt amazing I loved it. Didn't know it's called super Mario 2 until today.
My new fav channel. This game was no where to be found for like 6 months after X-mas when it came out but i eventually got it. One of my favs.
Another one beat finally after all these years, never new how close I actually was this whole time lol, another great video!!!!
Congratulations!!
Binge watching these, you cover my favorite games ever.
super mario bros 2 is my favorite mario game. loved it when it came out. and still do.
I've used the jump-off-the-chain trick, but one problem is it means you skip long and interesting parts of some levels. Also, it means you end up fighting Wart with only two health units.
Another trick not used here is that mushroom blocks can rest on background graphics elements like clouds, which can be used in places to create alternate shortcuts, like using the one in 3-1 with characters that don't have a long jump.
I love this game and your guide to go through it. Luigi is so broken here!
He really is! Love Luigi in this one
I really love SMB2, I got it on the NES when I was a kid.
I would love to see another SMB game with Subcon as a setting up.
I know it's not going to happen, but I can dream.
Super Mario 1 really happened, Super Mario 2 was just 1 big Mushroom trip, and Super Mario 3 was just 1 big stage play and reimagining of Super Mario 1 lol 😂
19:41 Toad is the fastest digger.
Panser... Imagine soldiers in WWII:
Lieutenant! Kraut tanks!
Quickly men use your turnips!
I can relate to someone in middle age who played this as a child (this is a game for children), for a few minutes of relaxation, watches a few minutes of this video.
If you think about it this is kind of a miracle of happenstance. Think about all the games that never were released outside of Japan but we got super lucky with this one and it's incredible. We even got the real sequel a few years later on the All Stars cartridge so we're not even missing out on the real Mario 2 at that point.
It opened them up to bring a third NES Mario game to the next level. All three games unique and great in their own right.
Pro points for continued use of Luigi - i love an underdog story
Love the Luigi damage boost. Everyone can get a little boost by sacrificing a hit but Luigi's mechanics make him the best at it.
I beat SMB 1 & 3 with little difficulty back in the day but could never beat 2. 1st time I've seen the end.
Thats interesting I could beat 2 not 1 or 3. In 1 world 8-3 always kills me.
I've played and beaten this game many times, and never caught that cheese on the Wart battle. And the ricochet technique on Clawgrip is pure genius.
While i enjoy the DDP mod, The Lost Levels presented an interesting challenge too.
The Poison Mushroom that i had first seen in the early Mario Party series was a surprise to see, the wind definitely still catches me off guard when i occasionally play it, and then there's the warps to locations further from the goal, nevermind the method required to unlock certain worlds...
There's a lot of replay value in both games, and i love how so many enemies appeared later in the series from this one.
TLL is definitely not a "casual playthrough" game, so i'm grateful this game exists as well.
Hi. Remember that strat where you pushed the key up in Desert Land & Phanto never bothered you??
Yeah. How about throwing the key - Anywhere you can pick it back up - as you go down that area you go left/right off screen & reappear on the other side in World 3-3??
When I was a kid I thought most of the enemies like Ninji and Porcupo were just too adorable to kill so I tried to let them live wherever possible 😅
This was the first NES game i ever beat. After beating Wart and opening that last jar i freaked out at first and thought i had just released a bunch of beezos : D But since my character just kept jumping and happy music was playing i knew i finally beat it and was yelling out to my family that i won and we were all cheering haha. The princess was my favorite character because her float ability made platforming so much easier for me. If i knew how to use luigi properly like you did though i would have liked him best. I used to be really good at getting cherries in the slot machine game. Lost that trick though over the years.
I love the design of this Super Mario. I wish there will be sequel to it.
The ending was one of the best endings in any game i have ever played. Lol u dicover it was all a dream
Highly underrated Mario game. Nintendo Snobs seem to look down on it for it being a reskin, but to me it never mattered.
I've actually heard people dislike the ending of the game just because of the adventure turning out to be a dream, which is ironic because the same thing was also able to happen in "The Legend Of Zelda: Link's Awakening" on the Game Boy as well as "The Magical Quest: Starring Mickey Mouse" on the SNES.
Wart is in Links Awakening. Is he in magical quest too?! It could all be connected!
Great format and aesthetic. I absolutely love this content.
Thank you!!
Thank you for helping me beat Super Mario Bros 2.
Even though I was a little boy Princess Toadstool was my favourite character in this when I played it back in the NES days.
@37:50 When fighting the 2nd Mouser, I find it easier to just wait until a bomb takes out the spark before bombing Mouser.
In "The Legend Of Zelda: Link's Awakening," we see Wart again as Mamu the frog. Mamu teaches Link the "Song Of Soul."
I think I would get my butt kicked on it now. I never knew you could do the door twice. This just made me happy watching
Awesome channel. Very entertaining and informative, keep the videos coming!
Thanks!!
You can watch the spinning pictures and time when a cherry will appear in the first slot, it's definitely not random. As a kid, i got very good at getting tons of extra lives at the end of most levels. Spamming the button won't get you three in a row, theres a tapping pattern to it.
Yup. I could see the cherries as well. I got loads of free guys.
UCBVG: * uses Luigi *
Me: Ah, a cultured man, I see.
I knew that Super Mario 2 was just a retooled version of Doki Doki Panic but wasn't aware of the whole backstory behind it
I want to give the retriever a biscuit. He’s beaten more NES games than me.
Great channel here man. We gotsta get you moar subs
Thanks a lot! I'm still a pretty new channel, and we're getting bigger everyday, but yeah, definitely need more subs! Tell your friends, lol
@@UCanBeatVideoGames I'm spreading the word far and wide
Thank you!!
In 1-2. You can also get on top of the high ledge by putting the lower half of your body under the bottom of the screen as you travel on the flying carpet section at the beginning and it will simulate a run.
Just found your channel. Awesome stuff sir. I thought I was a master at this game but you showed me a couple tricks I didn't know. Two things I've found playing this game. In world 5-1 at your 44:56 mark while you're collecting all the coins in sub space, if you collect a bunch of coins and then die by going off the cliff while still in sub space you can continue to collect coins for as many times as you have lives to burn. It will go well passed numbers and the alphabet into some symbols or whatever with the amount of tries at the slot machine. Also if you're quick enough while playing the slot and hit the button as soon as you hear the music you can almost always guarantee a cherry. I find this only works if playing the actual Nintendo machine. If you're playing on an emulator or any of the newer Nintendo mini's, with the usb controller, I find this doesn't work as well due to the usb lag. Subscribed.
That's a good tip, and interesting about the music cue that guarantees a cherry. The NES Classic and really ANY emulator seems to have a tiny amount of input lag. It's mostly unnoticeable, except where you need extreme precision, like in Punch Out or this little trick.
Thanks for the sub!
According to the "female characters wiki" there are 76 NES games with female playable characters, and a total of 1391 games on the NES, so games with female playable characters comes out to about 5%. If you were curious lol
Yes we all know you like playing the pretty princess. You ain't gotta brag about it.
Just beat this game for the first time today, all thanks to this video!
I love this game and I just learned some new tricks, thanks a lot UCBV :D
Dang dude. I’m now watching and playing. Guide me through. Ty for sharing
now that I'm an adult and watching this video is this really a Mario game without Bowser ? lol
TIP
There is a trick to get as many coin tries as possible. Depending on how many lives you have. Collect coins and jump off cliff before dark world music ends to die. Repeat over and over till you have no lives left or how many you think you need to finish level, the slot machine number will be high letters counting down. (R, Q, P, O, N, ETC.)
Depending on which player you use.
It's like Bob Ross of playing video games, I love it
take me back to my child hood everytime i watch his videos
Watching these videos are like watching revenge or payback videos. Growing up spending hours going different directions but wanting to see all the levey areas drove me crazy. I knew this game was off. I didn't know it was a made from another game.
It all makes so much sense once you know. Thanks for watching!!
I like to try to use every character 5 times for the 5/5/5/5 ending
1:04:49 - You beat Wart with the happy tomato!!! :)
I find it strange that here, in Pokey's original appearance, you could jump on top of his head but doing so will damage you in all his subsequent appearances. Except Snow Pokey.
So many things I didn't know about this game.
Schon witzig, ich konnte nie gut mit Luigi spielen. Die Prinzessin fand ich aufgrund ihrer Segelfähigkeiten am Besten.
One thing I remember specifically about this game is that there is exactly one Snifit in the entire game that doesn't just hop in place or walk back and forth. Level 5, maybe? He's the single red Snifit who actually wanders. Always thought that was a little strange.
3-3! If you go into the door to the right of the first key door, you'll find him, wandering around, looking for a friend, the single, lonely red Snifit.
This was when I was working at NOA in Washington. What you know sounds like the game play counselors I heard there. I still have my 1st copy of Power magazine too.
The game with the best Mario sprite of all time.
"What if I told you how to get through all 20 of the games difficult levels?
Toad. Then answer is to always choose Toad.
The more I watch this channel, the more I think, that dog has a smooth sounding voice.
Yeah, it's a pretty cool ending for an NES game... Except my cousin flipped out when she first beat the game and saw that.
No one knew this game was a reskin when I was growing up. I found out decades laters.
16:40 😅😅🤗🤗 scared me half to deAth!!! Love this channel!👍
ha ha, that is a big jump!
I find it refreshing to see you playing as Luigi over that showboating Mario lol.
It was difficult to listen to the first ten minutes, but once you started speaking normally again it was much better. Excellent tips too
First game I've ever saw beaten. Also first game I ever beat myself.
I could swear that the booklet (At least the French part here in Canada) also mixed up Ostro and Birdo. Technically, an ostrich is a bird, so it COULD have been Birdo... But in the "Ostro" description, it claimed that he liked to be known as Birdetta. HMMM.... lol
3-2: Key can be skipped
Enter the door at the bottom, use Luigi to through a Ninji against the wall, then use a super jump
Clawglip and clawgrip….another example of the Japanese R to L translation like Clash Man and Crash Man from MM2
