  • Finally, we’re talking about the canon 5DII in 2022! I personally own the 5DC, which is an all time favorite camera of mine, so I wanted to see why the 5DII still is getting so much praise (even in 2022). This camera was a workhorse when it first came out but can it still hold up with all the new mirrorless cameras of today? Let’s review!

I just got a 5D MkII with 29k shutter count for $220 from MPB. Just for stills. Buy a $200 full frame and spend all the rest of your money on high quality glass.

I consider it a special purpose camera. It is great for portraits and very good for landscapes. It provides RAW footage as long as manual focus is not an issue.

Hello and congratulations for this video and for you channel! I have to started to learn professional photography on this camera in 2017 and I still own one that just over 100.000 shutter count and it works great. I want to share some of my experience with this camera. The camera is great, the RAW files are gorgeous and a pleasure to post process them, the JPEG files if you want to shoot JPEG are just fine and you can use them straight out of the camera. I am using this camera for outdoor photo sessions with my prime lenses Canon 24mm 1.4L MK II, Canon 35mm 1.4L MKII, Canon 85mm 1.4L IS and Canon 135mm f/2L lenses for weddings or fashion or corporate photography and I just love it.
It is not my main camera but backup or secondary camera but I still use it professionally and I use it personally when travelling all the time in my backpack. My main camera is Canon 1DX (first version) which is out of this world superb (but I wont get into describing that camera here) but I wouldn't shy to take only the 5D MKII with the prime "L" lenses to a professional contract.
The one major thing I don't like about this camera in this day and age is that it has only ONE card slot and I want always redundancy for my photographs in case something bad happens to a card or to a card slot. I have also started to film some small footage 2K with MagicLantern software and its amazing how much quality you can get from it.
In my personal experience I believe that the highlight recuperation is not that terrible nor the dark area recuperation but you have to keep working with a low ISO. I am not using this camera handheld professionally at night for example, at the restaurant during the wedding party ceremony I would use it only by day professionally at an event. I wouldn't go pass ISO 1600 maybe 2000. The focus points in low light on moving subjects such as for a party or during wedding at the restaurant are not great, the center point works well but you have to be careful. The central focus point I find it great and workable.
My obvious choice of upgrade and more logical would be Canon R6 in the future because of the more advanced autofocus system and it has that small 20 Mpx file which can be easily be processed and delivered to the customer. Personally I find the 18Mpx of the 1DX and the 21 Mpx of the 5D MKII ideal for my workflow.
However I have fined tuned the camera at a Canon authorized service and once they clean it and calibrate it professionally you can start working with at the maximum apertures. That being said I highly recommend this camera in 2022 but I would use it with Canon "L" lenses, in my vacations I am travelling with Canon 17-40 f/4L and maybe also add a 85mm 1.8 USM or 70-200 f/L USM and the pictures are out of this world.

    Thank you for the video.
I own both 5D Classic and 5DII. Simply love them deeply. Use them all the time. Yes, they give the filmic look I'm after. Pictures look like pictures to give a cool feeling to the eyes. Extra sharp images produced by R5 are great but, my DSLR images look better to me.
As a hobbyist, I shoot landscape, street photos and wildlife using 5D, 5DII, 1DIV and 7D. I'm convinced I'll never need the R5 or R3 for my purposes.

Can't believe you didn't mention the total lack of any auto focus function in video mode as part of your review. Love my D5 mk2 by the way. Use it with Tamron 28-80 f3.5-4.5 and 80-210 f4.5-5.6 AF lenses with superb results. Lenses cost £40 for the pair and body was £229 for near mint, little used example with 6 months dealer warranty, 3 batteries (showing max health) and a fast Canon charger and wide Canon 5D mk2 dedicated neck strap. Also have Nikon AI-EOS adapter with aperture control lever for fitting my Nikon 20mm f2.8 and Adaptall 2 lenses.. like my wonderful mint Tamron SP 23A 60-300 f3.8-5.4 (£20), Can't wait to try it with my Pentax SMC 70-210 f4 too (£34) which produces stunning results on the Pentax K-m with 10MP CCD sensor. These later manual lenses allow for distance scale focusing while shooting on the 5D when tripod mounted.

I did buy one but bought the cheapest available and was not happy with the physical properties and fit.. returned it for refund. So, my advice would be, don't buy the cheapest. May need to use 8GB or 16GB SD as a maximum capacity.
