- A continuation of last video's theme of affordable full-frame DSLR photography. In this video, I go over the three best low-budget, well performing, general purpose/everyday lenses for full-frame Canon DSLRs. To see my photography, follow my Instagram @JordanPhotoNewYork
For what these three cost, a 24-105 L series is within reach and an excellent walk around lens. Also, if you look hard, a 50mm f/1.4 USM can be had for not much more. I got mine for $145 and it's way better than the 1.8 is in every way. This is a few years after your vid, but I got my 5D Mark ii for $218 and 24-105 L series lens for $300. It's a potent combination.
i find the f1.4 much softer than the 1.8..

Totally agree with your choice of the 40mm 2.8 pancake lens. This lives on my 5Dii almost all the time. If I had to choose just one lens to carry with me then this would be it. It's super sharp and f2.8 is fine for every day use.

I already had a Canon 6D, Tamron 24-70 2.8 G2, Canon 70-200 2.8 IS ii and a Sigma 150-600 C. Last weekend i bought the 40mm to have a little lens for when i go out and photographs are not the main reason why i go out. So when i go for a walk or a bike ride, i put the 6D with 40mm in my pocket and when i see something nice, i don't have to use my phone. Loving the lens!
hii. i started using 5d mark ii to film my new movie project in 2018. believe me so far i have been hugely impressed by its performance. this is built like a tank and does not fail you under any circumstance. i use 50 mm and 40 mm a lot. also i have been using a helios 50 mm lens. the results have been quite good. yet to upload on youtube though.

I picked up the 40MM f2.8 and it works great on the 6D. On a crop sensor body, it still works decently as a walk-around lens. Even though I have some expensive f.2.8 zooms the 40MM is the go-to when I want to use my 6D (or 7D or 20D) without lugging around those heavy, large zooms. The 40MM also works pretty good on extension tubes.
the 40mm 2.8 is one of my favorite lenses. Its compact, I can toss it in my camera bag and it works as a body cap, people are scared of it like a 85 1.4 or something bigger. above all else the lens is super charger. I prefer the images the 40mm gets over the 50 1.4
I own 40mm f/2.8, 50mm f/1.8 STM and 35mm f/2 IS with 5D Classic (and several cropped cameras for movies) and totally agree on everything! Moreover, currently saving up for Mark II to get into FF video! For APS-C users I could also recommend *the 40's cropped twin - 24mm pancake* . Almost as sharp as its FF brother and so convenient for every day use! Overall, nice video! Bring more of these, please =)

@@JordanPhotoAudio I modestly saved up around a year to buy 35 IS and 80D together used =) That's a really good lens, the most expensive of what I have and probably the "one for all" piece either on FF or APS-C. You can shoot absolutely anything with it.
@@JordanPhotoAudio BTW, initially I had Yongnuo 35mm f/2 from China which was practically made in the body copy of Canon 50mm f/1.8 II (Yongnuo have their own 50mm f/1.8 in the same body for cheaper than $50) and it was not so bad! It lacked IS, was made of infamous plastic with noisy AF, but it costed circa $80 new and was just about sharp enough wide open (unlike their 50mm lens which is sharp from f/2.8 on). So, for beginners: you can easily get away with Chinese lens for a while! Then save up for a higher grade stuff.
If you are comfortable with Manual mode in your camera, I'd say get a vintage Pentax SMC 50mm f1.7 lens with a cheapo adapter (Pentax PK to Canon EF). Cut off the lens aperture lug with sidecutters to avoid scratching mirror. You'll have to focus and set exposure manually but this lens is amazing and gives lovely bokeh and more 3D images too. They cost only around $30. I bought mine in 1982 and now I use it on my Canon 5D mk1.
I disagree a bit about the sharpness on zoom lenses. Zoom's made for FF bodies often have a surprising amount of resolution. The Canon 75-300 50-100$ lens gets a horrible rep because it sucks on Crop sensor but is actually sharp on FF.
Even tho sharpness aint the only consideration and primes are fun I jusy thought I would throw in my 2cents

The 50mm STM is better optically (see dxomark measurements ). It's not expensive brand new.
I agree about the 35mm f/2. I have and like the 35mm f2, 40mm f2.8 and 50mm f1.8, but as a kit for your camera, the 40mm is very close to both the 50 and 35. As a minimal kit, I would suggest the 35, the 50, and the 100mm macro. I do like (immensely) your choices and all do offer great bang for the buck.

Great video, thank you! I recently bought a 5d mk ii and loving it. I have a 50mm 1.8 on it but I almost do wish I had the older lens due to the electric focus. I would be curious what zooms you do recommend for the best price for full frame understanding they will be expensive.

Very good question. I certainly wouldn't recommend buying all 3. I just see these as three good options for single lens collections. Once you have one of these, I'd recommend your next lens be something radically different, like a tele-zoom or whatever.
I am thinking of buying a used Canon 5D Mark IV and I wanted to know what affordable lenses there were for a full frame camera. This was very helpful. Is there an affordable wide angle lens out there for a Canon full frame camera?

This is the video I've been looking for. Chasing value & image quality instead of all the newer, fancier frills.
I'm in the same boat, looking to upgrade to a full frame and buy one top quality lens that can match professionals.
But since I've had 18-55mm kit lens and a 50mm prime, I'm tired of the wider angle. I had borrowed a 50-250mm from a friend on and off for years, and I prefer that over wide & standard focal length. I love shooting interesting details and abstracts, so a telephoto is the single lens I'm looking to buy.
Would the quality of 70-200mm f2.8 be as good as a prime or should I go for the 135mm f2?
The issue is, neither of them have image stabilization. The 100mm f/2.8 macro does have IS but I'm looking for 130-250mm sort of focal length.
Weirdly enough, the 200mm prime isn't available anymore. After the 135mm, there's directly 400mm. Is this not a popular range or are people using teleconverters?
Also the old 200, 400mm are all incredibly expensive. Whatever happened to primes being cheaper than zooms due to their simplicity?
Spot on. I own the first two but not the pancake. Those two are fantastic lenses and serve so many purposes. IMO, AF lenses should be used as AF.
When manual focusing is desired; one should try for a complete MF lens. I found a used famous one recently that keeps a hobbyist like me extremely happy. It's a Carl Zeiss Planar 50mm f/1.4 ZE T*. It's not very sharp wide open but starts getting sharper from f2 onwards. The wide open produces a filmy look when used with my Canon 5D Classic. Use it with 5DII and 5DIII as well. Bought this gem for 350 dollars.

I was considering the 35mm 2.0 for my crop body many years back (like in 2010) but decided on the 28mm 1.8 which was perfect on crop. It feels a little loss on my FF because it is too wide vs what I am use to.
Is that a rebel ti/ eos 300?
Can you suggest a great lens for a Canon 6D camera? A lens good for wide lens and could zoom in as well.
i got the 50mm sttm for like $100 dollars new on sale. probably the best buy you can make. if you want to save money too just buy one prime lens or at most one 35mm and one 50mm or only a 40mm your wasting money getting 3 i feel. take one step forward and your 10mm adjusted or something.

I think you make good statements, and you know your stuff for sure, but why did you just bring forward tree lenses in the wider range? I would expect more varity in the recommendations. I would find it interesting if you would make a video for those longer lenses too. How would you consider the 100mm f2.8 macro? The oldest version is not that bad in price? Or what about the 24-105? I guess it's not in the affordable category anymore, but it has the potential to cover the needs for two or tree other lenses, and that should be in the consideration.
Good questions! The reason I didn't discuss the lenses you mentioned ultimately boil down to this; Would they be good for someone who has just enough money for exactly one full frame dslr and one lens. Obviously it's a hypothetical, but it's still a good perspective to look through. In other words, if you were to be stuck with one lens for an indefinite period of time, would you really want it to be a 100mm? If you're a portrait photographer, probably yes lol, but for someone who wants to do a little bit if everything, you'd probably prefer a 50mm. As for the 24-105, you're correct. That lens is as (or more) expensive than most of the cameras I mentioned, so I'm assuming it's out of the budget of this video's intended demographic. Thank you for watching and commenting!
@@JordanPhotoAudio Well, as I understod the head line, you was talking about the afford able lenses. Not only one to buy. I guess I didn't pay enough attention at the start. 😀 As you put it, there's no other lens than the 50mm to buy, as a first lens. The 40mm gives you less bokeh, and the two other gets quickly very wide for many situations.

The first lens that comes to mind is definitely the original Canon 35mm f/2! It's image quality is so great that it even performs better on APSC than some lenses do on fullframe! They're very uncommon, so keep an eye out, but when they pop up on ebay, they typically go for about $300

The single best bang for buck image quality and usability lens for EF is actually a zoom lens and it is not even made by canon.
I am talking about the 24-70 2.8 from Tamron. And if you pair that with a 70-200 2.8 from Tamron you are set for everything you might want to do for under 600€ used.

Yes! If you only need a little wider, then EF 40mm f/2.8 STM (~$150), or for wide angle lenses EF 35mm f/2 (~$350), or EF 24mm f/2.8 (~$200)

Of course the f 1.4 is better but also 3-4 times more expensive.

I stumbled on your channel and you seem really knowledgeable and interactive with your community, I recently bought a lumix g7 with the kit lens for 400 after taxes would you say that was a good purchase for an absolute beginner I've been doing alot of digging but no one really compares it to older used cameras with used lenses, would the canon 5d mark 2 with some of those lenses have been a better purchase? Again I completely understand if this is a bothersome comment anyway either way thank you!

There’s really not that much difference in angle of view between the 40mm and 35mm lenses. I wouldn’t bother carrying both lenses with me.

Significant prolifiration of counterfeit 40mm and 50mm Canon lenses. To the point that buying new one from a canon distributor is your only guarantee to not get the youngnuo disguised as canon.

I heard that about the 50mm f/1.2.. It has something to do with depth of field. I have the 50mm f/1.8, and am trying to get the f/1.4 because of how much brighter it is.

As I specified in the video, the f/2 without image stabilization. The newer one with IS is great, but it's nearly 2x the price

You are wrong there are youngu version which is cheaper than tje older canon and its 48bucks.
And youngu 35mm f2 is the cheapest budget option.not canon. Price same as stm niffty fifty.
How is the image and build quality on those youngu lenses?

The 50 1.8 is crap on 5d mk2... I own one and did this transition, utter garbage lens! For FF you get amazing results from the 50 1.4! That’s the lens to go with if you want full frame.
