Hi, kids💚 Hope you enjoyed today’s video!
While making this episode, I had a lot of conversation with grandma Ok about how accepting we are as Koreans to people from different background. I found out she had some personal memory she is not too proud of, and she was afraid to share. I believe sharing our past mistakes with others can make us all learn and grow, and I thought her story with a black soldier needed to be shared.
Because she is my grandma, I am concerned the fact that she used the N word as a teen might show her in a bad light. I hope I have put together this video well enough to show how much she regrets such behavior and how much she had learned since then. Please be kind to my sweet grandma😊
Isaac, the guy with a great laugh, owns a UA-cam channel! Please go and show support for him and his twin brother @가나쌍둥이
Stay tuned for the second part! Love you all!

I can say the video does a great job showing grandma OK in a way to see her regret and progression to an even more accepting person. I believe everyone should see how open and loving she is to everyone now. We all make mistakes in the past but we we learn, ang change.

I don’t see the positive man being born in Korea. Actually people of color or who are black must have immigrant parents from another country who never migrated to a new country, and as it will be a cultural shock to them, so it’s important to learn the culture, language, and everything. It’s still impressive he learned Korean at his own pace, so he can learn the culture and things he’s interested in.

As a black person usually I’m skeptical about these videos, or their titles “Korean meets a black person” because I’ve seen so many videos where ignorance was STILL being portrayed instead of enlightenment, and I felt like black people in those videos were still being talked about as if we are objects sometimes so usually I’m thrown off by videos and titles like this. But I really enjoyed this, what made me happy is this black man actually got to speak about his experiences without anything/anyone shaming him and no one is in the comment section (right now) telling him he shouldn’t be surprised or basically condoning racism and discrimination (this comment section is peaceful so far). And even though grandma has that racist past as a child, I can only comment on how she has reflected on that now. It goes to show that it is one thing to be unaware of why certain things are racist like she may have been and it’s another to choose to continue to be ignorant, so I like that grandma was so genuine in explaining how what she did was wrong as a kid without feeling sorry for herself. It’s hard for some people to own up to that, and sometimes as they get older they’ll just give up and stick to a racist mindset. Grandma educated herself so that’s good on her ❣️
It was nice to see as well because sometimes you think of older people as “stuck in their ways” but grandma isn’t! I can only hope the comment section is just as respectful as this video because again, sometimes I’ll watch videos like this and the comment section would be praising someone for not being racist anymore or downplaying the black persons issues and scenarios in the video. Lastly as a black person enjoying a multitude of different asian cultures, I hope the somewhat tension and even racism between both communities can heal more and more. Ignorance comes from both communities sometimes and it’ll never be fully healed but it takes making your own choice to do your research, learn why certain things are racist, or at least question why you’re saying certain discriminatory things that obviously doesn’t even FEEL right whatsoever if you’ve had no mature or educated role models to teach you etc. this is why explaining that people from other countries don’t know why something may be racist is FINE but when you keep making that excuse and decide not to educate yourself or ask questions after learning that something is wrong, that is a CHOICE. This goes for anyone everywhere.
Sorry for the run-on sentences but I had a lot to say and still do, I’ll leave it at this tho 😭
Edit: I literally came to check this comment bc I had wondered if anyone would read it since it’s been a few days and holy shit I didn’t expect so many ppl to say something and like it 😭 these positive comments really outrule the like 2 negative responses I’ve received. I tried to be kind and fair writing this but some people will always be angry. Much love ❣️❣️

To even educate herself and reflect on her actions was more than enough but to go as far as to bow several times in order to right a wrong really blew me away. No human being should have to earn being treated like a human being with respect 💯. I was stationed in Korea for over a year in 2000-2001, and came back to visit friends a few times over the last twenty years. Some of what he described with taxis, subway etc were my experiences each time. I resorted to standing on the street and holding 20,000 WON in my hand to get taxis to stop a lot of times and would end up giving it to them as tips just for stopping. People would talk about me on the subway sometimes, and then when I got annoyed I'd respond in Korean and they'd always apologize.
Nearly every Ajumma I ever encountered was the kindest, friendliest, and most helpful whenever I seemed lost, or needed help and my favorite Mrs. Oh, who ran the PC Bong even tried to introduce us to older daughter haha; she was like 25 and wanted her married but that meant a lot because of a lot of the stigmas. I remember going clubbing many times in Gangnam or Apujang and getting turned away because the bookers thought I was African. My Korean friends would scream at them and say I was American, and with them and a lot of times that would get me into the clubs and have a good time.
I was a musician in the Army Band in Korea so I got a lot of opportunities to play at Lotte World, did weekly concerts at the Korean War Memorial, and did a few concerts at the Sejong Cultural Center, Seocho City Hall, UN Cemetary in Pusan, the Pusan Jazz Festival, and loads of clubs like All That Jazz in Itaewon, Once in a Blue Moon in Gangnam and more. I did some gigs in Panmunjon, and in the tunnels at the DMZ oddly. Being a musician opened a lot of doors, and people generally treated me better than the normal soldiers because they respected that I was a skilled artist.
South Korea is one of my favorite places to visit and I would live there again in a heartbeat given the chance. Time for another visit with my friends!

There’s some turmoil in many African countries so I guess they figure the next best thing is to leave. I know some channels do interviews of African families living in Korea and they give you a better idea of their own personal situation. In the US the government still interferes with Native American life in so many ways. One of the ways is that if someone who is not a member commits a crime on a reservation and leaves the reservation police can not arrest them off of the reservation grounds but if a Native American commits a crime off of the reservation then the local police can arrest them on the reservation. It shows how unequal the Native Americans still are in the eyes of the government. How they are still considered lesser than.

This video is a example of being treated differently, it doesn’t have to just be hate. What was the point of this video? It’s like saying that black people aren’t humans, what’s so special about meeting a black person? This is just making a barrier between the races.

    • @DarkAngel2512

@@pastelcotton7286 not necessarily. Its good to hear others expriences. And to see others reactions. To hear if he exprienced racism and to hear how a Korean said something racist and regrets it. It helps for those wanting to move there and for those who may harbour some racist views they might change how they look at black people or asians. All races have racist people and all races have people who have experienced racism. The only time I see division caused is when people are actively being racist or claiming others cant experience racism due to their race.

why dont you ask the albino africans that get discriminated against far worse in Africa? And that one is ACTUALLY discrimination based on skin because they are still african with african genes but other africans discriminate on them. Unlike here where its not "skin colour" but completely different genes and heritage altogether

it has nothing to do with "colour of skin" Koreans dont like other asians or white people either. Its natural tribalism. Africans are also tribal too. If people are not tribal over race, they would be tribal over other things, like religion or politics. Like America which is incredibly divided over political tribalism.

THIS WILL BE LONG, BUT MEANINGFUL...
I've been a fan of this channel, and especially the videos with Grandma OK for a while now. And with this series of "Korean Grandma Meets...", I was always intrigued to see her take on something about people who are different from what would be considered the norm for her culture and generation, and she handled each with love, grace, and humility. This channel truly brings joy to my life and I give props to Zoe, Yum, and definitely Grandma OK for giving positive energy to this subscriber! Immediately with this video, I must say though, I took personal interest as a Black man, myself. I could see Grandma OK was very remorseful for her past ignorance and wanted to at least apologize to someone who was the closest thing to that man who eventually left her village, to absolve herself of 70 years of guilt, which I can appreciate her for, though she really didn't have to apologize (but it was sweet and sad at the same time). However, I felt way more empathy for Isaac (even if I wasn't a Black man, myself) because the world has continually shown hatred against people of African descent, helped in large part by White-owned mainstream media that dominates communication around the globe, thus they are able to manipulate the narrative with social propaganda of how they portray Black people (especially to those around the world who have little to no contact with us, so only make assumptions about us through unfair media portrayal) and help to reinforce negative, racial stereotypes of people of the African Diaspora, whether it's the highly offensive idea of Black people being "primitive", ape-like people if they were born and come from the continent (NOT country) of Africa, or as violent criminals and degenerates as depicted in US TV and movie culture, and of course the sexual stereotypes as well.
As a Black man who has traveled across the world to simply learn, connect with, and appreciate cultures different from my own (and I'm not stereotypically a soldier, a rapper, athlete, etc), I have had and sadly will continue to have my share of racial experiences simply because I am Black person in this world, pre-judged before I say a word or move a muscle. Isaac is only 22 (half my age) but I already can see how much pain was behind his smile (his smile is genuine but also his shield to protect against verbal blows from racists); his resilience is what many of us have who wish to rise above the hate, but the pain still resides, still cuts deep, though we just don't let it get the best of us because we will not let ugly people like that bring us down to their level. If only people truly understood what it feels like to be hated in one sense, yet our music, arts, culture, style, slang, ideas and so much more are so heavily copied and appropriated by so many around the world. As the saying goes, "they love our Rhythm but don't want our Blues"-how hypocritical and insulting to be so disrespected and yet so deeply imitated/envied at the same time. I hope Isaac stops trying to prove himself to those unworthy of him to even do so. He owes no explanation and should exert no extra effort to prove something that he should never have to...that he is a HUMAN BEING worthy of respect and is inferior to NO ONE!
I know I'm writing an essay, but hopefully at least one person who fully reads this will be able to gain something positive & useful from this. It caught me by surprise with Grandma OK saying she would not be happy if her granddaughter said she wanted to be with a Black man, especially considering how open-minded she has been about everything and everyone different from her experiences through all the reaction and "Meets" videos thus far, including saying she had no problem if one of her grandchildren came out as gay, which is also taboo in Korean culture. My only guess is, aside from it serving as clickbait for Part 2, that she is concerned about how her granddaughter would be treated by other Koreans because of their racial prejudices and that it might cause major problems in some way...although I'm still puzzled because her usual go-to feeling is as long as her granddaughter (or anyone) is happy, she should do and be with whomever makes her feel that way...but I will wait and see what the full context of this will be.
I, myself, am dating an Asian woman (whom I genuinely fell in love with and don't fetishize Asian women nor would tolerate her doing the same with me as a Black man) and live in East Asia, so I am very well aware of the stares, some curious and some not friendly, have met some wonderful people who are genuinely good people and kind, and those who are ignorant and hateful. Unlike my Ghanaian brother in this video, I'm definitely less forgiving if they cross the line and dare call me a "nigger" or even the colloquial "nigga", or whatever version it translates to in their local language, because I do not consider absorbing verbal abuse as rising above it; that is literally internalizing continuous mental & emotional trauma and I will not tolerate disrespect and will speak up and correct any fool stupid enough to try me, though I will always seek the peaceful approach, first and foremost. There are certainly examples of negativity that can come from either side, as no "race" of people are innocent, as I know for a fact that not all Black expats I meet in other countries are doing things that are morally and ethically right. Nonetheless, the type of racism we receive is still life-altering and at times can be life-threatening, so this is a good video to try to address some of these issues for Korean audiences in particular, as I've visited South Korea a few times and have experienced some of this first hand.
In closing, I just will say that to truly have a human experience is not really about the people you tolerate whom you encounter, but the person that you see yourself become when you encounter different people and what you do about your own faults in order to change your ignorant ways to become a better version of yourself...that's when you are truly becoming the "human" in "humanity". And now I wait for the video's conclusion...

There is a sentiment that goes "don't judge people on their actions when they were ignorant, but do judge them on how they act after becoming informed."
Besides that I don't think I would be so light on a 13 year old now adays, but i imagine grandma had literally never been told EVER how hurtful that word could be and further still have known any way of seeking that information at all. There was no option in Korea at the time to learn that besides from that man himself, and he was to polite to say anything.
