I'm Puerto Rican but I still appreciate this reaction because I've been told by many that my hair "looks like black girl hair" even by professional stylists, but my hair tends to shock people when they actually touch it (yes, even the pros). I honestly had a salon visit where every single stylist in the place came over to me to touch my hair because my natural 3C/3B mixed hair looks very coarse but is actually baby fine and soft when touched so it shocks everyone. I never understood why when I was younger until I ended up styling a friend's hair for her and noticed just how different it felt despite looking fairly similar to mine.
Honestly, despite the difference in softness, I would honestly prefer if my hair had the same "grip" that "typical black girl hair" has. I've worn many traditionally "black" styles, such as box braids, cornrows, twists, bantu knots, etc. Because of my hair texture, it isn't quite as "easy" to produce the styles on my hair but I do love the look. I've also styled my hair via blowouts and flat irons (such as in my profile pic) to the point that my hair almost looks Asian. In that way, I appreciate all styles and types of hair and enjoy seeing others appreciate them as well. 😁
As someone who has the privilege of having 3 black women as some of my best friends, I’ve seen first hand how much work goes into maintaining their hair. The patience they have w their hair and how much time, effort and *money* that goes into it is honestly amazing and I think that it’s super interesting to watch and learn about. As an Asian woman, the most I ever have to worry about when it comes to my hair is a flaky scalp and oily roots. Even though I don’t use braids or protective hairstyles, I’ve seen what my friends have endured to not only maintain their hair but ensure it was deemed acceptable by society as well. If you want to learn and if you want to understand just a fraction of what they have to go through, just surround yourself w black women and they are more than happy to teach. I even learned how to braid a bit bc of them and I’ve definitely learned to appreciate what they have to do bc my god is it hard. I’m sooooo happy that different hair styles and textures are becoming normalized. Videos like these spread so much awareness and in these times, we need more of it!
Edit: that person in the comments literally exposing themselves out here, admitting to cultural appropriation and downplaying the how race has influenced the lives of POC people 😭🤷🏻♀️ This isn’t the 80-90’s my dude, this is 2022. What is socially acceptable has changed, social etiquette has changed. You don’t have to wear a white cloak with eye holes in it to be racist or have racial bias, it is literally engrained in American culture and history whether you like it or not. Now, whether you choose to believe racism is a problem or if it even exists is up to you but there’s only 1 right answer. I fr don’t have time or patience for ppl like you and I couldn’t be bothered w someone clearly stuck in their ways and who is resistant to change.
Either way, I’m soooo hopeful for our future, guys. The majority will be in our favor as younger generations eventually move into positions of influence and power. There are so many people who are not only trying to learn and understand beyond themselves but, also reevaluating their own inherent biases that we’ve been taught throughout our lives. Having that many people self-driven to become better is an amazing feat in itself. I love you all and I hope that in our lifetime, we are able to move towards a society based on empathy and kindness.
These styles have been normalised for centuries. Have you seen for yourself any evidence that it isnt accepted by society? What hairstyles do you see in shops or on tv or on professional programs? Growing up during the 80s-2010 these styles were so normal nobody ever spoke about them. Now social media doesnt shut up about it. It's all fake news.

@@DarkAngel2512 just because you haven’t experienced it first hand ( or maybe you have idk) doesn’t mean it’s “fake news”. In many areas in the US having braids,locs,twist etc is deemed unprofessional…and is HIGHLY discriminated against. The further we go back the less technology we had ,so of course it wouldn’t be as broadcasted or out in the open like it is when you go through first hand and when you have more people talking about/ posting about it today.If it wasn’t still present the CROWN act wouldn’t exist.

I’ve sat for 10hrs to get my hair braided. If possible I get two braiders. Braid style and length can contribute to how long it takes. Crochet braids are also another protective style that’s fun. I like it because it’s a way for me to have colorful hair without having to dye my hair.
How long do they last for?? I know they take a longgg time to actually put in but I’m unsure of how long they last once in!! :)

For me it usually takes like 2-4 hours and the pay is like 100$ so that’s pretty cheap. So it depends on who braids your hair.
@@bituinl but doesn't it also depend on where you live? If there's an abundance of people in your area who know how to do it, it's cheaper, right? (I remember a friend who, when we lived in WI, had trouble finding something affordable. That went away once she moved to Chicago, then NYC).
@@LindaC616 I honestly have no idea sorry 😅. So far I live in a big city and a lot of diversity so it’s expensive now. For the other one it was a small town which is Hanford and it was cheaper, but not much diversity. Although my mother already knew someone there as for the other one she didn’t know her, but now their friends. So I don’t know if this information tells you anything since I moved back and forth.
Glad that you're back!! If you're braiding your hair yourself it usually takes around that amount of time to finish but if you have someone do it for you it only takes 4-5 hours. Twists take less time to do! Please react to more black hairstyles, there are so many!

It also depends on the amount of hair my sister gets her hair braided but it takes such a long time even when starting in the morning. It can be late into the afternoon when it is completely finished.

I braided my hair today, it took me 8 packs and 12 hours. My hands, arms, scalp all hurt, my crazy fast braider could do it in 4 hours max, I should’ve paid her 🥲 loved your reactions to this talented woman
Omg, I hadn’t even thought about how sore your arms must be after this! Occasionally I’ll put my hair in a French braid or something; my hair is a little past shoulder length but very fine, and even that will leave me sore sometimes! I salute all you beautiful women and the dedication you put into your gorgeous hair!
I will always pay someone else to do it. Lol I don't have the stamina or strength.

The first time I did my own box braids it took me 3 freaking days!!! I spend the first one doing the sectioning of my entire head using lil hair bands, and the two others doing the braids... At the end I was sooo proud of myself but, HELL NO NEVER AGAIN! 😵😵

Just did mine. Took 2 days to unbraid, wash, condition, detangle and dry. Then 2.5 days to braid thin 5 colour ombré twists to waist length 😭

This is why I let other people braid my hair I could never deal with the time. Plus I don't know how to do box braids, but I do know how to fix them slightly. Having long thick hair and trying to do it is a chore all on its own.
It's worth maybe just doing the root part first and braiding a small amount down so you get all the roots out of the way on the first day. Then if you need to go out the house you can without your hair looking weird. Then over the course of the next day you can braid another third of the hair and the third day do the rest. And you can do this all whilst doing other stuff like teaching TV for example. So you arent sat in front if a mirror all day for three days.

i’m black and i do my own box braids pretty often. the good thing about doing it myself is that i can decide to take breaks whenever i want and however long i want because it does take a long time. usually it takes me about 10-12 hours split up into 2 different days (i usually go to sleep with a little over half of my hair done and do the rest in the morning)

When I canerow my hair I usually take my time..I could do it in an hour but I chill and spread dit over 2.5 hours and just eat as I go and rest when I get bored.
I usually pick a show to binge watch on Netflix.

important note: these types of protective styles are made for Black hair! specifically very curly or coily hair, and trying to do these hairstyles on non-Black hair will result in your hair falling out or breaking! also, people can lose their job for having protective hairstyles bc they are seen as "unprofessional" due to Eurocentric beauty standards
They’re great for Jewish hair too since it’s also very curly, thick and coarse. Too bad it’d be insensitive for us to use it now 😅

@@Remember_the_Time you can be ethnically Jewish yes. The 12 tribes and Ashkenazi are different ethnicities. Judaism is the faith. In English the word “Jewish” is used interchangeably between the religion Judaism and an ethnic background, but they are definitely two different things.
And yes. Quite a few Jewish people have type 4 hair.
I get my hair braided about once a year mostly during the winter. And I don't have the patience to do it at home. Most people go to a professional to do it. There's usually a local salon that has someone who specializes in braiding. One thing is you have to be careful not to get it to tight.
Also you can choose your sizes, I usually get mine medium so a little smaller then hers' with more braids and of course there are micro-braids. I love the look but I will say removing them can be really annoying.
This is such a beautiful style! The time and dedication put into it, whether you’re doing it yourself or going somewhere, is just incredible! Just curious, how long would you say they take to remove? As long as they take to braid, or longer?
@@sarahallegra6239 It depends. It usually takes me about a day to remove since I like to take breaks. I usually cut them short in order to speed up the process. But of course you have to be careful because your hair will have grown in that time.
I get my sister to do it for me 🤣 But she’s got work and school, and no off days so I haven’t gotten it done since September or so.
@@itz.amariyah I'm very lucky to live in an area where there are several salons with women who can do it for me. I recently took mine out for the spring. I usually do medium because I can't sit through micro.

Oh I've had my box braids for almost two months and I'm sad for the day I have to take them out...
I couldn't do a braid to save my life, but I have taken box braids and cornrows out of my niece's hair a couple times when she was younger. Just her natural hair too. It was awesomely poofy and cute when we got done. It took me at least an hour and a half to two hours each time, and she just sat there patiently. I love the woman she's grown into, but I miss the kid sometimes!
She's moisturizing not just for "fuzziness" but mainly so her hair strands will not *break off*. East Asian hair follicles tend to be very circular, which makes each hair's thickness very even and strong. However, southern African/southern African diaspora/black hair has a tendency to oval follicles, or sometimes even kidney bean shaped, which gives it a lot of body, but each individual hair can be almost ribbon shaped, which makes it quite delicate. There is still a lot of variety in hair type, but moisture is very, very often the key to not having one's African hair snap and break!
(I haven't had box braids since the 80s, I had no idea these hair extensions were coated in so many chemicals!)
Glad to see you guys are back! You should definitely check out more videos on black hairstyles and braiding culture. Its a super interesting part of our culture that the rest of the world doesnt get to see much of! There are so many intricate patterns and designs you can do with black hair-braiding, the possibilities are endless. Also, undoing the hair can take just as long as braiding the hair. It takes a long time, but for a lot of people who don't have time every morning to take care of their high-maintenance curly natural hair, taking a day or two to get a protective style like box braids can be a more convenient alternative. Many of us grew up bonding (or not 😬) with family members while getting our hair done in these styles.
I've watched the videos on UA-cam and it's totally mesmerizing!! I love how the hair looks after they are done.
And the patience of the little girls getting them just wows me! ❤️❤️❤️

It’s usually quicker if someone else is doing your hair. It’s usually 1-2 people and will often take around 5-7 hours (that’s how long it usually takes me)

Yeah she did hers really long and about the thinnest they could be and still considered box braids. Thicker bob length box braids can be done in a couple hours.

in Africa, we have sooo many different type of hairstyles. Box braids is one of them but there are so many braided hairstyles. like fulani, cornrows, locs, butterfly locs etc and many different depending on tribe, country/culture. Also people don't usually do their own hair, unless they really know how to, most people get it done and it usually takes 2-6 hrs depending on the hairstyle and how fast the braider is, sometimes in african hair shops, more than one person braids the hair
I'm so I'm love with you ladies. Thank you for being open-minded and wanting to learn about all people. The work we put into our hair is a lot but it all comes from our roots and history, it tells a story and served as a communication tool. Not just fashion. It warms my heart when others can see the beauty in our hair.

I’ve been braiding my own hair for more than 20 years. I used to do small braids but I no longer have the patience for that…lol

12-18 hours is usually how long it takes me to do my entire head,, agonizing sometimes tbh lol
edit: also to take it out, i just cut the bottom portion of the braid off (the part without my real hair in it) and then you can use your fingers or a comb depending on the size and just open the braid. I also hate the process of removing them lol
Question: if you didn’t cut the braids off, could you reuse the hair again? (Sorry, if she mentioned it in the video, I missed it.) I completely get why you’d cut them out to make the removal process quicker and easier, I was just curious!

Box braids are especially sacred to us in many ways same as corn rolls and many other styles. It’s something no one should do unless they are black. It’s like stealing something from your culture that means the most to you. Thank you!

I got knotless box braids last year as a birthday hairstyle. The only difference between knotless box braids and normal box braids is there’s no “knot” at the top with the first style. It took 2 days to get it done and I had two braiders but they were students working under a teacher we knew. The first night they accidentally braided down to like my knees and we had to shorten it the second day. I had hip length box braids and I need them in my life again.
I love that you guys took the time to watch and react to this Box Braid video. What is really interesting is that the majority of the synthetic hair used for braiding is manufactured in South Korea. Has been for several decades as SK has cornered the market on mass production of synthetic and human hair. So Zoey and Yumi, you are cultural connected to "black" hair braiding more than you know.

The time it takes depends on the length and thickness of the braid. I watched about 60 or so UA-cam braiding videos to learn the how tos before I tried to do it. Took about 4 months of watching til I got the confidence to do it.
The first time I attempted box braids it took me 4 days! Chilllle, I was determined though. I was still having to go to work everyday so I was doing a little bit when I had the time, that’s why it took so long lol. But when I finished…I felt so accomplished. Everyone complimented me. Now with it being my first time doing them, I had some fattys and skinny’s cuz I wasn’t measuring out, I was eyeballing it lol, but it still looked decent.
Here we are 5 yrs later and I can do medium size box braids, same width and length, in 4 hrs. It just takes practice. I refuse to pay $180-$200 for something I could learn to do with determination. Now a head full of braids only costs me the hair ( no more than $35-$40). And if I do crochet braids, it only takes about an hour to an hour and a half. It was a fun skill to learn.

As a black Canadian, here’s why some box braids look good on different hair.
#1 - people with straight or thin hair, I mean white people, generally when you get the braids they can make you look bald sometimes. Depending if your naturally hair will fluff up and fill in the space between the braids.
#2 - for black hair it’s more kinky and has more volume so it will look better.
I personally love seeing anyone do box braids but always do your research before getting them done.🥰🥰

The effort black women put in their hair truly is mind blowing. There are sooo many styles and they are all stunning, as is a natural fro!
The first time I got box braids I did it at some girls house who was the daughter of my moms friend and she kept stopping and doing random stuff in between and It took basically the whole afternoon, I was so annoyed. But the braids came out well so that’s good.
Disclaimer: I am African. So for all my diaspora women I feel you. I can’t imagine doing my own hair! I tell people I undo my hair and they look at me weird, and that takes an hour. I count my blessings that I can cheaply do my hair here
Honestly being a little black girl getting box braids done is a core memory for me. It would be my mother sitting on the porch braiding my hair and my aunt (a close family friend) would sometimes help or other little girls got their hair braided too, and the other kids would just be playing outside while I sat with a sore neck. I grew to love the smell of burning hair from when my mother would take her lighter and seal them. As an adult I miss it, but I’m trying to learn to braid as it feels culturally significant to me. I’ve only done box braids on myself twice. Once last year when I turned 21, and right now watching this video. So far it takes me 2 days to finish bc I’m lazy. Thanks for reacting to box braids

I would like to see you guys react to the documentary "Good Hair". I loved it. It dove into the styling industry directed at black women, and what was being said was acceptable and desirable. The film was supposedly inspired by Chris Rock's daughter buying into the notion that naturally curly and wiry hair, common among African descendents, is bad hair.

Keep in mind this woman did her braids by herself. When I get someone else to do my braids it takes half the time it took for her to do it alone, about 6-7 hours (4-5 if my braider has help). I wish I could braid my own hair but I do not have the time, energy or skill lmao.

Yeah I've definitely sat for 8-10 hours for some braids. But its so worth it because I have nothing to do with my hair for the next 2 months! 10 hours / 60 days is only 10 minutes a day. Worth it!

Watching this video, while amazing, gave me horror style flashbacks to when I had to get box braids a kid and how everytime I would always end up leaving with tear tracks on my face and an extra sensitive scalp afterwards (I was really tender headed as a child so any harsh tug to my scalp, specifically the back of my neck, always elicited tears 😭). Glad you guys are back tho :D

mine honestly don’t take that long. i guess my braider is just really fast lol but i normally get small braids that are lower back/butt length and it takes about 6 hours x

@@louisejohnson6057 definitely bc it usually takes me 12-18 hours to do it myself but my aunt can do my head in about 8 hours. getting the parts straight and also coordinating your hand and finger movements when you do the back by yourself is rly hard sometimes

@@aliciajohnson8367 Bless your soul, I can't even do multiple braids with my natural hair without being ready to cry about my arms being tired and my sections not being perfectly symmetrical just 2 braids in, if I ever attempted a head full of box braids I'd probably have a full on mental breakdown 😭💀 My mom has arthritis and can't cornrow my hair that well anymore and I'm already stressed about having to learn to do those 😭
Oh, man - when I use to do this style - it would take me at least 2 days. I had to make sure they were my days off and I would have time to to take it easy in between sections... Now, I have dreads and the most time consuming is the drying and root re-twisting... Which takes all of 2 hours (except the drying) that can take up to two days in the winter months and 1 day if I sit in the sun on summer months...

I don't do box braids, but since my hair ir curly, I feel the need to section it so I can get the best results
So I braid it a lot, usually 3 to 4 braids every time I wash my hair

I use to braid my own hair but got tired of doing it so I go to a salon which usually cuts down the time . For me, it takes about 4-5 hrs .. plus , the back of my head is shaved lol
Black women and their hair are absolutely amazing. I do a decent french or plain braid, but this is really next level. I will say that most black women literally grow up doing this and become absolute pros at it. I am completely in love with the bold and beautiful looks they achieve. Honestly, I am a little jealous of just how many colours look good on black women. They can rock colours that my white skin just turns tomato next to.

I get my hair braided often and often I get many compliments and the most often asked question is how long it took. It mostly depends on the length of the braids and the size, but most of all the stylist doing the braids. The longest I have sat have been 7 hours, but in the end the braids are pretty, neat, and manageable for quite some time. Thanks for making this video ,it was really cool to watch.
Can you guys do a reaction to a "wash day routine" for curley hair because even the washing and deep conditioning processes are are important but fun and satisfying to watch.

It takes hours but it’s so worth it they are so beautiful and convenient especially if you’re busy and don’t always have time to do your hair. 😩
I'd like to add that box braids and pretty much all black/african protective styles are meant for CURLY AND KINKY hair. if you have straight or slightly curly hair you can get traction alopecia and your hair WILL fall out. dont do it if you arent black/african its not meant for your hair.

This hairstyle is for thick curly hair. If your hair is to thin then your hair would mostly come out. The hair style is mainly created for black women. That video is impressive. I do my own. Sometimes I just braid to the end of my hair & put a rubber band on. (The small black ones blend into the hair. )
One day (well, 3 days) back in college I did such tiny ones it took 36 hours so I watched the drama Dong Yi. This brings back such memories 😂 I don't do that any more because I swim
